UPDATED: ILB Shawn Williams highlights 4 new starters on Georgia’s defense

ATHENS – Georgia’s Shawn Williams, who started the first two games of the season at strong safety, got the start at inside linebacker Saturday against Coast Carolina

Williams, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound junior from Damascus, got the nod at the “Mo” linebacker position where regular starter Alec Ogletree was lost to a foot injury in the season opener. Ogletree is expected to be out at least two more weeks. Freshman Amarlo Herrera started the South Carolina game at Mo.

Georgia also had a new starter at the “Mike” inside linebacker position on Saturday. Junior Mike Gilliard filled in for Christian Robinson, who went down late in the South Carolina game with an ankle injury.

Williams’ switch from safety to linebacker created a domino effect on Georgia’s defense. Sanders Commings, who normally starts at cornerback, slid back to Williams’ strong safety spot. That meant that nickelback Branden Smith got the start at cornerback.

Also, John Jenkins was slated to get the first start of his young Georgia career at defensive end for the injured DeAngelo Tyson. But at the last second the Bulldogs subbed for Jenkins before the first snap and sent in cornerback Damian Swann as a nickelback.

Jenkins, a 6-4, 350-pound junior college transfer from Meriden, Conn., is primarily a nose guard but was filling in during the game at Tyson’s defensive end position. Tyson had started 11 consecutive games on Georgia’s defense but did not play Saturday because of an unknown injury. UGA officials said head coach Mark Richt will discuss Tyson’s situation after the game.

Other notable players to sit out Saturday’s game included tailback Richard Samuel (leg) and wide receiver Marlon Brown (ankle).

Why not start Corey Moore or Chris Sanders at either safety spot today? Chances are, they are better than the current placeholders. What’s there to lose at this point?

Just get healthy for the next game, and, stay healthy during today’s game. We can still have an outstanding season if we get back to full strength.

Honestly, I’m surprised we beat Coastal Carolina so badly. We beat them like a top 25 team should. On another note, Muschamp has proven to be a smart coach out of the gate. Putting Rainey on the punt block makes so much sense. No one on any punt team offense can block him. And yes, losing Da’Rick Rogers in recruiting is starting to hurt.

And when that day arrives, it will be sustained for as long as there is college football. When the super conferences form, Boise State’s days as a mid major powerhouse will have downs than ups. You can believe that.

Anyone who downplays today’s win IS AN IDIOT. 1.) Georgia had not won a game since last November. 2.) Georgia got to play a lot of kids. 3.) IT WAS THE NEXT GAME ON THE SCHEDULE YOU MORONS.

Georgia had to play this game. Much like so many SEC schools and ACC schools had already played one or two cupcakes. So, since it was on the schedule, there were two options. Win the game. Lose the game. Georgia chose the former rather than the latter. Enjoy it today. Get back to work on Monday. Move forward and don’t look back. I don’t think it was that big of a deal. Our guys knew it wasn’t going to be about all that. It was going to be about taking care of business.”Want hear something funny? The fans are getting it. UGA didn’t even sell out the game, first time in years. Here’s what Marjoe Markt Wrecked had to say about that:

Don’t you folks get it? This guy is a world class chump. Once again, he’s passing out the koolaid as his team beat a NCAA 1-AA team between the hedges.

Actually this was an unfair fight. In school, the coach wouldn’t let a heavyweight whip up on a welterweight. But ole Marjoe Richt’s passing out the koolaid, expert at the sleight of hand.

Bottom line is that this is pitiful, a scandal. We’ve been ripped off by this imposter and his conniving staff and their parsitic friends and family.

They have utterly destroyed our football program and belittled our great Football Tradition.

Hey Boise,

If you’re counting on us to win games for you then you are in trouble. Boise will never make it to the National Championship game with their schedule. To think we are the toughest game on your schedule is a complete joke because we aren’t anything special. Time for a dose of reality, Snoop.

You mentioned UGA’s “great Football Tradition”.

* Dooley won 201 games in 25 years, but 43 of those came during the first 4 years of the 80’s. So he won 168 games over the other 21 years. That’s about 8 games per season.

* Dooley leaves and we get Goff. Enough said.

* Goff is gone and we get Donnan who averages, you got it, about 8 wins per season.

* After Donnan comes Richt. So how far back do you go to boast about the “great Football Tradition”?

Now to Spurrier. I used to have very good contacts with a couple of people working in the athletic’s department. It appears Spurrier wanted the HC job at UGA but the braintrusts in Athens went with Goff. And the rest is history…..

Snoop,

I owe you a big apology. At first, I thought you were just an a$$ but the more I read of your blogs I came to realize that Richt really needs to exit stage left. Thanks for putting it all in perspective for me.

Marjoe Markt Wrecked is really the Three Dollar man. Why is UGA paying him three million dollars a year to lead us into the SEC cellar with all the creepy crawlers?

This is for all you sh–heads that are harping on Walsh, Coach Richt and the rest of the ball team have got to have come from a loooong line of inbreeding generation after generation. You people are so damn stupid it is pathetic. I feel sorry for the people that have to put up with you idiots.

Thanks Chip for the article on Hutson… he deserved the recognition. He played very well yesterday and provides us all with a sense of confidence that if called upon, he can get the job done. If Crowell goes down – well that’s entirely different story.

Congrats Power Rangers on your only victory of the season, Big team party at Bulldogs in midtown Atlanta. Offensive line to sing show tunes at midnight. So, who got suspended for drinking too many appletinis last night?

You whiners should schedule Notre Dame each year.

Dawgs also played 14 of last years signing class. Lot of talent for the next 2-3 years with 2 more great recruiting classes coming in. Future looking good for Dawgs.

I’m thinking the Dawgs may win the rest. It all comes down to Jacksonville. Mush-Champ acts like a complete idiot on the sidelines. The boy loves the camera and loves to act. He is perfect for the Gators. Just perfect. South Carolina is going to fold like a deck of cards like they always do. They start out strong and then fold. The Dawgs will win the East.

The dogs won in a manner that they should and by a score that was also anticipated by many dog fans. Beat Ole Miss and we are headed in the right direction.
