Georgia has released a statement regarding the health of the Bulldogs’ legendary play-by-play voice Larry Munson.

From UGA spokesman Claude Felton:

“The family has asked me to convey that Larry Munson is recovering from a respiratory infection and is in stable condition.”

Munson, 89, permanently retired from calling Georgia games two games into the 2008 season due to declining health. He had stopped traveling to road games in the 2007 season. He was behind the mic for the Bulldogs for more than 40 years.

I have always loved Munson. For the past 40 years his voice on the radio made Saturday afternoons in the fall a special time of year. I always turned the TV sound down and listened to Larry call the game. Since he retired, I just can’t listen to the guys we have calling the game now.

Best wishes and our prayers are with you. Georgia football will never be the same without you. You will always be the voice of the Dawgs to me and my family.

I miss the Munson days, truly the essence of a fall Saturday, I catch myself at times during games making comments in as gruff a Munson voice as I can saying “look at the clock, look at the clock,, 3rd down and a mile,, thats your up to date scores around the SEC from the Dixie Crystal Score Board,. Get well and Prayers have been said. Get back on the lake and catch on for me.

Guess I’m just a sentimental ol’ fool reading all these comments and getting misty eyed. As everyone has said, he is one of a kind. I ran into him once in a grocery store. I called out, “Hey, Larry( should have said Mr. Munson, I guess, but he was Larry to me…just like everyone I felt like I knew him personally). You don’t know me but I love you…” I still do and wish him a speedy recovery.

To the Tech fan who compared Ciraldo to Munson…you are right. I remember 20 years ago
when you could go from a Dawg game to a Tech game on the radio and get a feel for the
games in just a few seconds. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to both of them.

I’m glad that Larry is feeling better. I grew up listening to his legendary calls over the years. I want to offer his family good wishes and I will pray for him.

Larry, hope you step on this infection with a hobnailed boot and break its nose.
