Georgia has released a statement regarding the health of the Bulldogs’ legendary play-by-play voice Larry Munson.

From UGA spokesman Claude Felton:

“The family has asked me to convey that Larry Munson is recovering from a respiratory infection and is in stable condition.”

Munson, 89, permanently retired from calling Georgia games two games into the 2008 season due to declining health. He had stopped traveling to road games in the 2007 season. He was behind the mic for the Bulldogs for more than 40 years.

Too bad he has to see Georgia football in the decline it is in; Larry deserves better than that. That makes me cry.

It’s easy, we all love Larry because he is one of us. He lived and died with those of us in the stands and on the radio. I hate that one day I will have grandchildren that will never get the chance to share the same feeling as I had listening to him. It almost seemed that He was like my grandfather telling me about the game. I could truely see the game in my head as I listened to him, no matter where I was.

Best to Larry for a full recovery….I could only imagine how he would make a matchup with Coastal Carolina seem like a very crucial game.

I’m doing the play-by-play on Cable 12 in SW Virginia and use as many “Munson-isms” as possible– because Larry is the greatest play-by-play man of all time. Hunker down one more time Larry!

Larry was and still is the gold standard for college football announcers. I listened to him for many years, and can truthfully say that the games were far more interesting while listening to him on the radio than by being in the stadium watching the game live. Often I would mute the TV and listen to Larry. I believe he hated TV games. One time I heard him say on the air (to paraphrase), “We’ll be back after the break for or lord and master, television. Thanks, Larry, for the memories.

No one could build tension like Munson. If the Dawgs had the ball 3rd and a half a yard it was, “Third down and a mile to go.” If the other team had the ball and it was 3rd and two yards it was, “These guys are inches away from just killing us again.” Growing up a Tech fan his calls, especially with Herschel, just killed me. Since 83, my freshman year, the guy captured everything I felt about Georgia football. Always worried about the worst and relieved when we won. That call against Auburn, “Look at the sugar falling out of the sky,” is still the greatest piece of announcing I have ever heard. And for you Tech guys, I agree that Ciraldo was great too. “The looong three pointer…good.”

Get well Larry…….and no sarcasm intended. i do think this is partly CMR’s fault. He would spend less time at Sunday school and the tanning bed and more time watching film then Larry wouldn’t have to stress over these losses.

Anything other than accolades and well wishing is unacceptable! Tech trolls and hanger on’s need to google Larry Munson at least! Learn about a great man with a knack for calling exciting games and not so exciting games. He bleeds red and black (with the silver britches) but respected each team Georgia faced over the years. I MISS HIM! How did it go… “Lindsey Scott…30,40 50 yard line, run Lindsey run! 40, 30, 20 yard line…touchdown Lindsey Scott! Sorry it’s a paraphase but it’s close! Best damn announcing in college sports history! Go You Damn Good DAWG!!! Thinking about you Larry, God Bless You and yours!!

Larry, I miss you on the radio, our prayers are for your quick and complete recovery!!! My son’s birthday is Sept 28th, same as Larry’s. We took him to the game on his 1st birthday and late in the 4th quarter we tried to get to the radio booth so we could have his picture made with Larry on their birthday (Larry was turning 80) When we finally got through the crowd the security people told us he had just left. That has been such a regret for me. How I wish I could have given that picture to my son (he’s a HUGE dawg fan). I think of that everytime I see something about Larry. Hope youre well soon.!!!!!

Larry, I “saw” all the Georgia games from 1966 until your retirement. Your god given ability to make me “get the picture” ensured that anyone listening to you could see every play in their mind. We owe you so much for all those Saturdays spent tuning in to your broadcasts. Hope this condition has nothing to do with those big old cigars you and Brad Nessler used to enjoy with each other! God speed and football fans everywhere who have ever heard you call a game love you, not just the Bulldog Nation. You will always be the greatest.
