Georgia has released a statement regarding the health of the Bulldogs’ legendary play-by-play voice Larry Munson.
From UGA spokesman Claude Felton:
“The family has asked me to convey that Larry Munson is recovering from a respiratory infection and is in stable condition.”
Munson, 89, permanently retired from calling Georgia games two games into the 2008 season due to declining health. He had stopped traveling to road games in the 2007 season. He was behind the mic for the Bulldogs for more than 40 years.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Munson’s gravelly voice and game action descriptions could make you feel like you were there beside him at the game. He is a true treasure for all college football fans.

Despite our “power ranger” uniforms worn only for the money, our lack of discipline, and our unique inability to outcoach most teams anymore, Larry Munson will always be the voice of the Dawgs. Get well and God Bless Larry!

Larry Munson is Georgia football; I developed my love of the Dawgs in large part from Munson calling the games when I was a kid listening on the radio and I am now 55. Get well soon.
Nobody can call a game like Munson.

When I lived in Ala I was a Dawg fan. Once I moved to Georgia I became a Bama fan. Much more fun that way. Still wishing Larry a speedy recover to a classy guy and a terrific announcer.

The days of sitting next to your radio and listening to the legends bring us happiness or broken hearts through their eyes and voices are gone like the wind. We were truly blessed to hear the great Larry Munson, John Forney etc., in their youth. What great Saturdays they were.

Larry and Ed Theilenius (sp?) were the greatest. Ed started each game by “imagine the right side of your radio is the west endzone where the Dawgs are kicking from…toe meets leather…” too bad we don’t have characters like them anymore; however, I’ll be listening to my radio tomorrow around 1:00.

all you Richt haters read this.
Tammy Eunice wrote on Facebook after last weekend:
I am stunned and completely amazed at the kindness and generosity of Coach Mark Richt. …We felt he had done so much for us and honestly if that had not happened we would have understood. True to his word though, 2 weeks ago we got a package in the mail with tickets to sit in his box and a letter stating that he wanted to honor James with the number 23 on all the helmets. I was stunned! James was a young man who never practiced one time with the Bulldogs … wasn’t being actively recruited by the Bulldogs . ..and was not promised a slot on the team. Did Coach Richt have to do this? Absolutely not. Did he do this to garner praise for himself? No way. The reason I believe he did this was again to honor the life of our boy.”

I graduated from Georgia in 1964 and was living in Asheville, N.C. in 1974 and we couldn’t get him up there. My son and I went up on the Blue Ridge Parkway and finally got him. We stayed up there in, pulled off the road and listened to the entire game. We would do that over and over until the season was over. My son was two years old.

Well, it looks like old lady luck needs to get in there and help Larry and the Dawgs.
Pick ol’ Larry up off the mat and kick that infection in the fanny, and while you’re at it, bring the Dawgs back into the fray and smash every opponent’s face. Just crush their face!!
I’m paraphrasing here, but you see where I’m coming from, right?

Larry Munson is one of a kind. He was the greatest ever at expressing the drama and excitement of the game. Every Georgia game I watched, except the ones against Ga. Tech, I watched with that sound turned off and Larry on the radio. The Auburn “look at the sugar falling from the sky” call is one of the greatest memories I have of college football. I go all the way back to Ed Thelenius, by the way for the Bulldogs and the Atlanta Crackers.
