Georgia has released a statement regarding the health of the Bulldogs’ legendary play-by-play voice Larry Munson.

From UGA spokesman Claude Felton:

“The family has asked me to convey that Larry Munson is recovering from a respiratory infection and is in stable condition.”

Munson, 89, permanently retired from calling Georgia games two games into the 2008 season due to declining health. He had stopped traveling to road games in the 2007 season. He was behind the mic for the Bulldogs for more than 40 years.

I would always turn the TV volume down and the radio on so I could listen to Mr. Munson (but now I just listen to the TV announcers). The second or two delay between the cable TV and radio was somewhat annoying, but, the drunker I got the less noticable the delay was. “Back up to you, Larry.”

Not a Dawg fan in any way, but Mr. Munson was always a pleasure to listen to. May God be with him and his family.

Get well soon Larry. When I got to Georgia, you were already an icon. You brought the games to life with your annoucing. My wife and I tear up when we hear your taped voice on Saturday’s leading into the game.

Times change, its a fact of life, but true Dawg Fans miss you. My God look over you and guide you back to health.

It seems as though the heart of the Dawgs left the stadium left with Larry. Here’s hoping something can bring back that drive to win that we used to have.

As an Auburn Graduate – I love Larry Munson and can’t imagine growing up in the state of GA and not hearing him call a football game. One of the greatest announcers of all time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Munson family.

I wish you the best for a speedy recovery, Larry Munson.

May the years ahead of you be as golden as was your voice over the airways.

In my opinion, you’re the best play-by-play announcer of any college team in the nation – ever!

And, whether I was in the stadium listening to you on my earphones, or as I was so often in my youth, sitting on a dove field listening to your telecast on a portable radio, win or lose, you made Georgia football a real joy to follow.

A true dang good Dawg! All the best to you, Larry. .. Go Dawgs!

UGA Alummy…I’m sure your evil little comment was just to get a reaction.
Just remember you will have to stand in front of God one of these days and
give an account.
Also, I doubt you ever spent a day at UGA.
Larry, we’re praying for your quick recovery. God bless.

As a non Georgia fan, I can see how Dawg fans loved him. One of the classic broadcasters of the SEC like John Ward at UT and Jim Fyffe at Auburn. He is the only announcer though that I ever heard quote half yard lines… “dawgs are on their own 35 and a half yard line!”.

One of the greatest play by play guys for any sport. When looking over a putt one of my usual comments is “Loran, whadda got?, Well Larry it’s a left/right breaker and its’ all about the speed”. Just an example of how Larry goes with me to the golf course. Best wishes and hoping for you a speedy recovery.
