Q&A: Vince Dooley says Mark Richt will be at Georgia ‘for a long time’

Vince Dooley

Q&A WITH VINCE DOOLEY

With an 0-2 start on the heels of 6-7 season, UGA President Michael Adams and Athletic Director Greg McGarity have found themselves having to answer questions lately about Mark Richt’s long-term security as the Bulldogs’ football coach. Of course, they’re both very non-committal on the issue, considering there are 10 games remaining in the regular season. President Adams was asked about it again on Thursday at UGA’s cabinet meeting. “I think this is the time for all of us to come together and get behind this group of guys who played a heck of a game last Saturday and deserve our support,” he said. “I’ve never folded on anything 15 or 20 percent into it. That’s what we would be doing. . . . It’s time for us as a community to get behind this team.” Earlier this week, McGarity told me, “I’m not going to do a weekly scorecard on our football coach. We’ve got 10 more games to play.”

Vince Dooley is uniquely qualified to talk about the situation since he’s a former AD and head football coach at Georgia and actually was the man responsible for hiring Richt. Dooley was at both of the Bulldogs’ games this season and will be there Saturday as his 1971 team is honored on the 40th anniversary of its 11-1 season. So here’s what he had to say when I asked him Thursday to share his thoughts on Richt’s situation:

Q: Coach Richt has endured a lot of criticism lately in the wake of the Bulldogs’ 0-2 start and declining win totals the last three seasons. What are your thoughts on the job he’s doing?

A: “If you stay in this business long enough, you’re going to go through some down times. Joe Paterno had about four losing seasons in five years before he went on his run. Bear Bryant, in 1969 and ‘70, had some struggling times. He got beat by Vanderbilt up in Nashville. I remember his athletic director saying he was going to look for a new coach. At the end of the season he said, ‘I looked all over the country and can’t find one better than the one I got right now.’ I’ve been through it myself. In fact, we’re celebrating the ‘71 team reunion this week. That was an 11-1 team that finished sixth or seventh in the county. But the two years before that were down years. We won the SEC championship in ‘66 and ‘68 prior to that. So you have to be able to weather those down years and go forward. Every coach has to go through it. And usually you come out a better coach by having gone through it. So I’m confident Coach Richt is going to address it.”

Q: What were your impressions of the first two games this season and what do you think about the 2011 team?

A: “That first team we played this year, Boise State, is really good. They’re great, in fact. They’re great because of that defensive line and that quarterback. They can play with anybody. We played good enough to win that ballgame against South Carolina. They out-played them. But you have these turnovers – and they’re all bad – but these were disastrous because they resulted in touchdowns. They were touchdown turnovers. They weren’t turnovers that just gave them an opportunity to score touchdowns; they were touchdowns. So this team probably should have won that game and is very capable of ending up with a very strong year. You can look to the example of Virginia Tech last year. That was a lot worse than this. After they got beat by Boise they lost to James Madison. I think South Carolina is a little better than James Madison. So, anyway, it’s just what you have to go through.

“Coach Richt is a proven coach. He’s the type of guy you want at Georgia, the way he conducts himself, his character and the way he represents the university. I think he has the support of the greatest majority of people because they believe in him. I believe in him, too. So I think he’ll come out of it as other coaches have gone through it and have come out of it. He’ll be fine. He’ll be here a long time.”

Q: So what happened? How do you explain the downturn of late?

A: “I don’t think we’ve gotten quite the production from our players. Maybe we haven’t recruited quite as well. We haven’t been fortunate with some of these athletes. You can go back to that as well. And other teams have come on strong. It’s hard to think that other teams may have caused this but other teams are good. They’re trying to win, too. You’ve got new blood coming in every year and competitors each and every year that are all striving to make it. So everybody can’t be on top all the time.”

Q: Do you think giving up total control of the offense was a mistake for Richt?

A: “I don’t think so. The offensive production has actually been better. And I did the same thing after five years. As you take on more and more responsibilities as the head coach, the quarterbacks and offensive still demand more and more time and you’re not able to give it to them. I did the same thing and I think he made the right decision. He’s certainly still involved. You have to remain involved, but you can’t be totally involved. Even Steve Spurrier, as much as he’s involved, he’s got a guy who is coordinating and working with the quarterbacks. He still runs it from the sideline. So, no, I don’t think that’s the reason things haven’t gone as well. But people feel like they have to point to something when we’re not doing as well and that’s just one variant they point to based on the fact that it’s a change from what we’d been doing.”

Q: Let me ask you to put on your AD’s hat for a minute. Coach Richt will have only two years remaining on his contract heading into next season. So the decision is not just whether to keep him, but whether to extend his contract as well. So what has to happen for Richt for that to happen?

A: “My thoughts are we just started the season. People are talking about things we ought to be thinking about after the season. You just started. Yeah, there are some concerns. Coach Richt is concerned; we’re all concerned. But he’s got to be able to address the issues and he’s just getting started. At the end of the season, we’ll see where we are. The assumption is it’s going to be bad. Let’s wait and see. I think we’ve got a chance to have a good football season. I really do.”

How do Dooley and Adams get along these days?

Dooley giving this interview is real interesting.

He is clearly in Richt’s corner.

If we go 7-5, i wonder if Adams would boot Richt just to upset Dooley?

Coach Richt does deserve the opportunity to turn this team around. IMO I think he already has after watching how well those kids responded against SC. They played their hearts out in that game. Every coach no matter how good has a down cycle. Mark Richt knows how to win. He knows how to develope these kids too. He has been doing it the better part of the past 20 years at FSU & UGA. He had problems with the D in 2007 & 2008. A QB in 2009 that didn’t have much playing time and last year with a new D and Frosh QB. Things are coming together form and the program. Stop complaining and support these kids and the coach. You might be suprised at how much confidence that can give a team. If you have a hard time doing that then just keep quiet till the end of the year. GO Dawgs!

Well said Vince! Give the man the season and see where we are then. We lost to two Top 10 teams, both very good. The guys played their hearts out last week and we were not out coached, turnovers lost that game. People need to shut up and let the players play and coaches coach.

Interesting story Chip–great idea to interview Coach Dooley.

I’m glad to hear the sound of wisdom from Coach Dooley in his support for Richt. Coach Richt is an A+ coach as well as his staff in everything that is off field. Of course we are all disappointed in the last few years for on field losses, but every long term coach has them. The bloggers who think they went from good coaches to bad coaches in the last few years obviously don’t know much about coaching. As Dooley points out, the production from the players is the main change from a few years ago…..but that is changing beginning this year.

I go back and think about a similar situation up here at Kentucky.

rich brooks inherited a depleted mess in 2003 after Guy morriss left

Kentucky got blown out in several games during the 2005 season and were about to play Vandy in Nashville.

AD Mitch Barnhart gave Brooks a contact extension the week leading up to the game.

The team went on to win that game and then went to 4 straight bowl games before Brooks retired after the 2009 season

He never had SEC title success but he got a public vote of support from his AD and his kids went out and played great.

He also beat # 1 LSU in 2007.

Something to think about.

This is like the night mare that re-occurs. The 800lb gorilla in the room that nobody notices. Dooley must have very low standard. Im tired or watching. Nothing can take away this negative feeling the last 4 years of underachieving has given Georgia. This program is not a 2nd perhaps 3rd tier program. Judging by the number of responses nobody cares any more.

I’m hoping for a good season going forward for UGA.

Baring the turnovers against SC, if we can play as well on offense and defense as we did against them, we should be in every game this year.

Yes, they did play good enough to have won that game. With better focus on special teams, those mistakes won’t happen again.

And if we have have any luck, we’ll have a good enough winning season that Coach Richt will be able to sit down with AD McGarity at the end of the season, and assess where changes might have to be made and make them; be it position coaches, OC play calling whatever.

I’m behind Coach Richt and this team for the balance of this season and know that Georgia football is in good hands with the assessments / decisions that will have to be made. .. Go Dawgs!

Coach Dooley is right. Everyone get off of coach Richt’s back. Compare these stats:
Bobby Bowden
1981 6-5
1982 9-3
1983 8-4
1984 7-3
1985 9-3
1986 7-4-1

Did all the FSU fans whine and cry and wanted him fired? I don’t know but it was a good thing they stuck with him because the next 14 years he was no worse that 10-2 and most of the time he was 11-1 and won two National Championships. It took Bobby Bowden 18 years to win a NC. It took Joe Paterno 14 years an he had some down years too. All of the fickle fair weather fans need to shut it and watch whats about to happen because I was pretty impresses with the way this young team played and held together through some adversity. How many times do you give up 28 points in an SEC game and lose by only 3. This team is going to get better every week because it has some great young talent.

My point was that the UK fanbase was furious with Brooks. Many were calling for his head.

His AD stuck his neck out and gave him the contract.

It could have gotten him fired but instead got the AD a get out of jail free card that he needed to play when he hired the drunk b-ball coach Gillispie.

This interview does say a lot as to where CMR is with the decision makers at Georgia. If we win at least 8 games nothing will happen except a 4 year extension for Richt. If that happens I hope McGarity will realize that we need help with play calling and if CMR can’t do it we need a new offensive coordinator. We also need help with evaluating recruit’s . That means you hire a co- recruiting coordinator or you get a new recruiting coordinator. That only thing left is for Richt to accept that Murray isn’t getting the job done. Would any coach in America not give someone else a try if their QB was 2-9 against ranked opponents.

IF the team plays like they did against SC the rest of the way out – they can win them all and win many in convincing fashion. There is some special talent on this team that is just beginning to show. The problem has been the inconsistency from week to week over the last couple of years but also even some unexplained losses in years that we were really good – see 05 and 07 to SC for one. I hope we are creative and man enough to do something about it the rest of the way or it will be time for a change.

He’s a great guy and he has the capability of being a great coach (as we’ve seen), but I don’t think his heart and mind are in it anymore. Emotionally and mentally, he’s with his wife…as it should be…but you can’t be emotionally and mentally absent as the head coach in this conference and experience success. Saturday’s opponent has also faced top-10 competition. Florida, Miss St and possibly Auburn will face us in must-win games for their programs. GT always sees us as a must-win game, and Johnson has figured out Richt’s soft spots.

So, while a 10 win streak and a great bowl to finish out the season is possible given the team’s talent and coaches, and I’ll cheer for such a result, I don’t think it’s likely. I think the likely result is 3-4 more losses, including some to hated rivals, and UGA’s leadership wondering whether or not this is the time to hire someone who isn’t distracted.

I continue to be amazed at the number of fans who are screaming moral victory in the loss at home to South Carolina. UGA lost at HOME to SOUTH CAROLINA and the pollyanna richt lovers are happy because we looked better than we did in the Boise loss. This is incredulous. All I heard before the season started by players, media, coaches, etc was how important these first two games of the season were. Now we sit at 0-2 and the rationalizing has began in full force. South Carolina is way overrated and reality will sit in when we play UT, UF, MISS ST, Auburn, etc. This team is not much better than last years squad and it barely crack .500 if that. We need change at seasons end.

I guess you also forget that in 2007 that team that Stafford and Moreno was on WAS the best team in the country that didn’t get the opportunity to play for a NC. That team would have killed LSU that year if they would have played in the SEC title game. You also forget that the defense on the 2008 team was totally decimated by injuries. We could score points on teams but couldn’t stop anyone. All of that wasn’t coach Richt’s fault. It just happens.

I love the comments like, “fire him and get the Boise coach”. Does anyone really believe he would leave a school where they play 1-2 games a year to come to a conference where you better be ready every week? Fire CMR and go back to the merry-go-round before he came with one poor excuse of a coach after another. CMR has proven he is a very good coach, and like coach Dooley said once he gets through this he will be better for it.

Dooley: “We haven’t been fortunate with some of these athletes.”

That’s the understatement of the year, especially coming from the man who invented “remedial studies,” the scam whereby athletes could stay in college for four years and complete their playing eligibility without even being close to graduating. Fortunately, Jan Kemp exposed Dooley as a cheating fraud. Dooley was going to run for Congress, but the shocking revelations in Kemp’s lawsuit against Dooley and UGA derailed his political aspirations, for which we’re all eternally grateful.

Dooley would like to maintain an image of this wise old sage who put UGA on the map, but the truth is a bit different, isn’t it.

Mark Richt is just following the same trail that Dooley blazed years ago, but with much less success on the playing field.

Coach Richt is a great person and good coach (not quite as bad as Chan Gailey, but looking more and more like Chan). Something is missing. Great teams win these close games. UGA has been losing them for last several years. Some of the fans say lack of discipline or play calling or conditioning. Whatever, ultimately, it is Richt’s responsibility and I dont see how the AD can keep him. Especially as top recruits pick other programs because they believe Richt is gone. Even Papa Joe would be fired in today’s college football world if he had 4 straight losing seasons and losing recruits. If not for Hershel, Dooley would have been gone sooner too.

All of you complete idiots that are calling for change, who is out there with experience as a head coach that would be proven enough to coach in the SEC would you pick? Don’t say the guy at TCU or Boise because you may win one game against an SEC team but it doesn’t mean you can do it on a continuous basis. You may win against teams in the MWC conference but that doesn’t mean you can in the SEC every week. Who else? Michigan had to get a guy from a lower conference and Miami had to settle for the Temple coach. Don’t say some coordinator like Smart because obviously you want to win now and that’s not going to happen. With a new coach and new system we will lose 4-5 games for the next two years. Every coach that is at a program long enough is going to go through some tough times. Coach Richt’s fault is that he won too many games and 2 SEC titles in a short period of time and you got spoiled and expect that every year. Well, that’s just not reality. From what I saw on Saturday the ship is about to turn around and then all of you fleas will be jumping right back on the dog acting like you never doubted coach Richt.

I love coach Dooley and I agree with what he said. Give CMR the rest of the season and then evaluate. Its possible UGA will run the table. If so, hallelujah! Give CMR an extension. But I’m afraid UGA is going go about 7-5. More disappointment to come. If that’s the case then we get another coach.

@Columbus…I’ve been a rabid Dawg fan since 1971 and that magical ‘71 team. I’m not a kid. Yes, every coach goes through a down time. Richt’s is going on 3+ years. Time for him to turn it around. He’s got until the end of this year. If he can’t turn it around this year, then he will be going on 4+ years next year. At that time, it will be obvious that this stretch is more than a little rough patch and is systemic. Most of the coaches mentioned in the article had their down period at the start of their career at that particular school. The ones that were in the middle of their stint didn’t have a 4 year down turn (Bryant-2 yrs; Dooley-3 yrs.) and didn’t have a losing record during their down turn. They also turned it around…with a lot of pressure (remember “Dump Dooley”?). Richt has had his down period. Its time for him to turn it around.

Same people saying the same things. Give him next year, give him the rest of this season. This has been going on for several years now. How many more seasons are enough.
1. He can not correct the same errors year over year
2. Offensive playing calling: same calls over and over again that do not work
3. He can not beat Fla. and lost to UCF.
We need a change, someone who has the attitude we can win. I honestly think he goes into a game thinking we are going to lose. He has also not had a team that is a team player. He has kids who think they are superstars and only care about themselves.
If you want a player perspective, look at the articles from former players. The majority of them say the same thing. So take it from the actual players who played for him, he does not have the ability to coach a winning team anymore.

@Tobias Funke… I see you fail to mention the 8-5 year. Nevertheless, its not about the record, its about performing up to your potential. 2008-coming off a #2 national ranking and bringing everybody back for the most part. Preseason #1 with THREE #1 NFL draft choices on offense and lost to EVERY team on their schedule that had similar talent…by a LARGE margin. They were lucky to win against some mediocre teams. Not only that, but it signaled a trend that has continued. As a matter of fact, the astute observer noticed the beginning of this trend in the Sugar Bowl against WVU. At first it came in dribs and drabs (the dam doesn’t burst overnight). WVU, then even in the great 2007, a 35-14 loss to poor Tenn. team . Richt got the first taste of pressure that season and it spurred him to finish strong. Then there was the mediocre 8-5 year, followed with a 6-7 losing season. Now 0-2. So, yes. 3+ years of a down swing. And that’s not all. My biggest fear is he will turn it around, because he’s desperate. Get his extension and then relax again as we all watch the Dawgs underachieve again and people like you point to the great 2011 season and say CMR deserves a lifetime contract.

Having said all that, my fervent wish is CMR does turn it around. I want UGA to succeed. I’m just tired of the mediocre masses castigating the Dawg fans who want UGA to live up to their potential.

Dear Tobias Funke:
Please take your medicine 2009 a good season?
We lost to Oklahoma State, LSU, Tenn., Fla as usual, Kentucky. It is not about beating some teams, it is about the same issues over and over again. And by the way, if you didn’t realize, Tenn Tech is not a team to consider as a good win. Mark Richt can not beat Fla. even in a bad season for them. It’s time to get a coach that thinks we can win, and can bring a team together. I don’t mind losing, but I hate losing to the same team over and over and over again. Fla fans think of us as we do when we play a no name college team. They probably pay us to come there to play.

He had his shot when the league didn’t have the coaches it does now. His window to win one has closed.

Cheer up though. Maybe once he’s fired it won’t take another 31 years to win one!

I think we go 9-1 with a loss to either Tennessee or Florida. If the loss is close to Tenn, Richt stays. If the loss is to FL, and it keeps us from winning the division, Richt will be gone.

That said, there are some REALLY good football players on this team: Tyson, J. Jones, ‘Tree, Robinson, Rambo, Commings and Smith (even though he tackles like a p*$$y). Murray, Mitchell, Bennett, Figgins, IC, OC, Aron White, B. Jones, Dallas Lee.

I’m behind you, Mark. Show me you’ve still got balls to go with that Bible, brother.

Championship, man you sure are digging pretty hard. Have you ever played sports before? Are you Mark Richt? I bet you are. Did you go to UGA? Do you donate to the program? Probably all no. What men did he develop, can you give me some names of players he developed? I can give you numerous names of players kicked off the team and suspended. DawginLex,

Another gem of a comparison. Now comparing UGA football with UGA football! If you would have used UK Basketball with UGA football you might have been a little closer to the importance of each sport at their respective schools.

Rich Brooks had not been at UK for 9,10 or 11 years when he started to regress or progress. You are allowed to have one or two underperforming seasons, but being pre season ranked no.1 and falling flat on your face while losing to your conference rival year after year is more to the point.

The fact that Rich Brooks was rebuilding was the most valid point while Mark Richt should never have to rebuild, he should be reloading with all the talent in this state. One other point. How many first, second and third round NFL draft picks did Rich Brooks have during that time? Now how many has CMR had?

Poor argument, but at least you are trying to defend the dawgs, no matter how flawed.

You know why people, fans, and media are beating down on Mark Richt? Because all of our blowhard fans spouting off at the mouth all winter long about “Dream Team” and the changes CMR were making was going to make us an automatic leader for the SEC East. When in reality our fans should have been keeping their mouths shut while privately hoping and praying we could come out an stay competitive with Boise and USC. But we have too many fans who know little about collegiate sports to make a rational decisions while losing good or great players to the NFL, players being kicked off the team and others giving up football all together. Sometimes it is just better and watch than have your bragging mouth overload what can really happen.

I-DOG

September 15th, 2011
3:50 pm

As I have posted many times, I think waiting until the end of the season to “evaluate things” is a mistake. Just like I said scheduling Boise State was a mistake.

There were RARE instances MANY MANY years ago when coaches had 3-4 down years and come back and went on to have legendary careers (like Paterno and Bear Bryant). Most of the time putting off the tough but correct decision just delays the healing.

In my humble opinion all waiting does is hurt recruiting and hurt our chances of getting the best possible coaching staff. If we do something now/soon and name an interim coach from the current staff, we tell every potential coach in the country that the job is open and the hiring will be in Dec/Jan. There might be a a couple of big names that might seek Georgia out, knowing that the job is open. The interim staff will also be able to play the younger players a little more because they will be DIRECTED to and because they will understand that winning one extra game and going 7-4 instead of 6-5 isn’t the primary goal this season…

The primary goal should be to play some of the young players so that we aren’t so thin at OL and ILB next season when we lose some folks to graduation/NFL, to get the best possible coaching staff to Athens, and to minimize the impact that the poor play the coaching change have on this recruiting season.

Dooley’s teams usually played better than expected and that started his first year. He was also willing to change as needed. Remember the Wide Tackle 6 and the Veer? Am I missing something? I just seems very very wrong when a Georgia team scores 40 points or more and barely wins or loses a game. It just seems like such a long time ago when 21 points pretty much guaranteed a win. I really would like to see CMR succeed, but the last 3+ years just appear to be a spiral down into sloppy football.

It ain’t the defense, it’s the offense. It’s nice to be able to score quick on a whiz-bang trick play, but you have to play ball control football on offense if you’re going to win with a shut-down defense. Keep your defense on the field too long and they get winded — I don’t care who the S&C coach is.

What is lacking in this coaching staff is a holistic strategy and rational game-planning. That, and a lack of fundamentals being coached on a day-today basis. Too many missed blocks and tackles. Too many turnovers.

Were it not for all of those things, we’d be winning some ball games. Pray harder!!!

All in a division that has been in a round-robin between Tennessee, UGA and Florida. We are the third winningest SEC program (behind ALA and Tenn)since the inception of the official AP poll. Only Auburn boasts a better bowl winning percentage. We have two consensus National Titles (’42 and ‘80) and three shared titles (’27, ‘46, ‘68). Our program will be just fine. I know I’m gonna get blasted for this… but anyways, here goes. I’m an Auburn fan who loved – LOVED – Tommy Tubberville. Much like UGA fans think Richt is a class guy who truly loves UGA, many Auburn fans felt the same way about Tubberville. At the time, I was indifferent on the firing of Tommy. Obviously now, I think it was the right move. Sometimes its about injecting new blood at the top to revive a program and its fan base. In Chiziks first year when we went 5-7, every home game was more electrifying than the last. People felt a new sense of hope, even when we lost.

I’ll always think highly of Tubberville and will be glad he coached for Auburn. But I’m also glad that our athletic department made the change when they saw the program starting to stagnate. UGA is a top notch program that could get an amazing coach. And, UGA is certainly more talented than Auburn was when Chizik first came. Which means success would come very fast. I hope, for Auburn’s sake that Richt stays. For yall’s sake, the entire UGA fan base needs someone new to lead the way.

The “what” (wins, compete for conference/national championships) is certainly very important and it is understandable that a program could have downturns. But what Dooley seems to miss completely is the “how”. Is it not generally understood/accepted that any non-cupcake team that faces UGA will have fewer penalties, fewer missed tackles and waste fewer timeouts due to confusion or fatigue… and I’m nearly certain that at the end of the game, no one will say the UGA staff outcoached their opponents. That’s more the point than the losses. But those certainly lead to the losses.

No disrespect to Coach Dooley but a only a delusional person or someone suffering from acute dementia could agree with his comment stating Richt will be at UGa indefinately despite his losing trend. Blood is thicker than water and Dooley’s allegiance and passion for UGA fooball isn’t nearly what it was from 1964 to 1988 when his job was on the line each year as head coach. Dooley was ousted by UGA CEO Adams and the current mediocrity of the football program under Adams is accepted, understood and accepted even by Dooley himself. UGA will never will a national title while Adams run Georgia, thus Dooley’ s legacy will remain intact at least while he remains alive. The worse Georgia gets the better it makes Dooley era look. Of course he’ll never say it but several times in this article Dooley drew attention to when his teams even outside the Herschel era fought to win SEC titles. Back then what Dooley did and said was for the glory of ole Georgia, but now what Dooley says is for the glory of old Vince Dooley. Besides another factor is Derek Dooley, his son, is head coach at Tennessee, and the recent national title celebrated by his alma mater, Auburn, along with his resentment of Michael Adams has totally dilluted all of Dooley’s passion for the woes of UGA football under beleaguered Mark Richt. Vince is truly indifferent to the mediocrity, but knows his must say what the delusional big money boosters want to hear him say. Thus the mediocrity in the atmosphere at UGA will just continue to float down to the field surface. Little wonder over the course of the last 28 to 29 games of SEC teams no team other than hapless Vandy has won less and lost more other than mediocre Georgia.

War Dang Dawg

September 15th, 2011
5:06 pm

The secret to Dooley’s success was that he was always able to bounce back from a down year or two with a great season, often an SEC Championship season. Winning the SEC in ‘66 and ‘68 bought him goodwill in ‘69 and ‘70, then going 11-1 in ‘71 sealed the deal. A down ‘74 was followed by a good ‘75 and a great ‘76. Bad seasons in ‘77 and ‘79 were followed by a good season in ‘78 and a historic run from ‘80-’83.

Richt has been pretty mediocre since winning the SEC in ‘05, except for the last 6 games of ‘07. Even the 10-3 ‘08 season has to considered in light of the talent we had (a ton) and the relative ease of the schedule. Fact is, we got the crap beat out of us by the only two teams that were supposed to be an even match for us, then choked away the Tech game.

This was supposed to be the “bounce-back” season (actually more like the second one), but it looks like more of the same. Unless this team goes on an amazing run, Richt is toast. And Dooley darn well knows it.

One other thing, people like to compare Dooley and Richt’s winning percentages. In 25 years Dooley might have had a handful of joke games – I remember VMI one year, and we played Temple a few times as a homecoming opponent. Richt has played more automatic W games in 3 years than Dooley had in his entire career. If you are going to compare winning percentages, take out the two freebies Richt gets every year and substitute teams like Clemson, Michigan, BYU, TCU, Texas A&M, UCLA, Pitt, Houston, and other nonconference games that Dooley had to coach against over the years. Still think Richt would be on top?

And Dooley rarely embarrassed us, win or lose. There was an ugly game against Nebraska in ‘69, a blowout loss to Virginia sometime in the 70s, and a shutout loss to UF in ‘84 that was actually competitive for most of the game. Richt has had quite a few ugly beatdowns in recent years, starting with the Tennessee game in ‘07. I bet he’s had more from ‘07-’09 than Dooley had in his entire career. That’s the real reason Richt’s on the hot seat, it looks like the wheels have come off.

I hope he is here for a long time. He will win at least a couple of NC befor he’s gone. It took Bowden 18 years and Paterno 14 years to do it. The ONLY people that come on blogs calling for Richt to be fired are not even UGA fans.

Joey, I don’t think it had anything to do with not studying football and being lazy. Head coaches are CEO’s of teams. They have the whole team to worry about not just spending time researching the new trend in football. They leave studying football to their coordinators. I think the OC has had trouble studying it but he called a lot better game Saturday.

Joey, Just like Richt, Dooley won 2 SEC titles in his first 5 years. He didn’t win another one for 8 years. Were the fans ready to show him the door during that stretch? Dooley had 23 years to win those titles. Like Paterno and Bowden he didn’t win a NC until his 16th year but everyone is ready to show Richt the door now.

People that say its not coaching are drinking too much kool-aid. The lack of discipline, being surprised by trick plays(again), the lack of time management, the neaderthal play calling are all coaching. What did you expect Dooley to say “Yes I think he should be fired”. Dooley was very guarded in his statements and was trying to defer to later in the season. He knows that Georgia is not teaching fundamentals. If we were just talking about this year it would be disappointing but different. If you don’t extend the contract it hurts recruiting. So what do you do , extend the contract with a pay cut? I hope plans are being made to stop the slow painful slide and bring a modern coaching staff to what should be the premier team of the SEC.

Bobo called the best game of his career vs SC, no doubt, kerryb and I have sung his praises all week. But Richt, himself, bizzarely said in Jan he was going to start studying football, cutting-edge football.

Dooley had more years, but having more years doesn’t necessarily mean more titles, right? Look, I hope Richt somehow gets back on track, but hoping it hasn’t made it happen, yet.

Facts are facts. He has lost 3 games in a row. He hasn’t lead UGA to a meaningful (against a ranked team) win but once since 2008. (I bet Dooley didn’t have a streak like that.)

He’ll break one streak Saturday (3 in a row). I just hope he can break the other streak a couple of weeks later.

kerryb, that’s just a matter of opinion, right? Well, my opinion is that there are probably a dozen college coaches that would have run the table in ‘07 or ‘08 with the talent UGA had. But that’s just a guess.

What I do KNOW for fact is, Richt has gotten beat in half of his last 28 games. 14 Losses. How many of those losses were to teams with more talent than UGA’s?

Probably only the ‘09 UF game, and the ‘10 AU (Cam). So either he has had a LOT of bad luck in the other 12 losses, or he (and his staff) are getting out-coached.

Joey, that 07 team at the end of the year WAS the best team in the country and should have played for a NC which they would have won but they were denied the opportunity. The 08 team was totally decimated by injuries. We lost Sturdivant the first time and Figgins early in the year they were having to patch the O-line together and moved Kiante Tripp to TE. The defense was really hit hard. The injuries is what happened to the 08 team. The 09 team had a 5th year senior QB that in the end showed why he should not have been a starter. The 2010 team had a new defense and a Redshirt Freshman at QB. They also were not counting on losing their superstar WR for four games. There are reason’s why UGA has struggled the last few years and it was not all coaching.

Much as I respect Dooley, the comparison to programs 40 years ago don’t seem relevant. Look at how the competition has excelled and maintained their success – that is what UGA should be compared itself with. And I can’t believe his statement about recruiting. We get the players. They are studs that end up playing on Sundays. But what happens while they are here? Yeah I hope Richt can do something amazing this year and get this program winning, but I’ll throw out this question: What do you think Peterson and his staff would accomplish with the talent here?

Well, I don’t claim to be an expert on Boise State football, I just go by what I’ve seen them accomplish since they were in Athens a few years ago. What I saw in the Dome was a Boise team that looked like they knew exactly where to be and what to do on every play, and they did it. I saw a Boise coaching staff that figured out what worked against us and stuck with it and we had no answer. I think if Peterson can take those players, who Spurrier said looked like Furman trotting out on the field, and play at that level, he would have UGA playing smart, tough, disciplined football and contend for SEC and National Championships.

Nice touch with the Vince Q&A Chip, still a class act and a Georgia man though he would have every right to be somewhat embittered the way he was unceremoniously shown the door by Adams. Sure, I’m disappointed, as are my friends and family. To tell you the truth I thought we would beat Boise and lose to SC, but definitely was looking for the split we almost got. The play calling was much more creative last week and this group of young receivers is starting to find an identity. Crowell is so smooth when he runs and has that extra gear come daylight. In other words, this is kind of a fun team to watch if you can stand the growing pains by Murray et al. Can you imagine how good these guys could be in a year if they all hang together and continue to improve? I sometimes have questioned whether Richt wants to be doing this, but I’m willing to stick with him certainly through this season. Worst case scenario: A loss to one of these upcoming cupcakes — already penciled in as Ws — and the mood around these parts will be as ugly as those hot-pink Nike unis. Best case: Dawgs continue to gel as a team, finishing strong and beating UF, then draw a tough bowl opponent and win. That would seem to be enough to recoup considerable enthusiam among coaches, players and fans. Though much has been taken, much abides.

Though I played the game I would never presume to judge the coaching decisions Coach Dooly or Coach Rich, but I do believe my own eyes and what i have seen over the past several years is reason enough for me to question what has happened to this program. Even in a terrible year like 1977 it was evident what was wrong and by the end of the 1979 season Coach Dooly had taken the steps necessary to turn it around, and look at 1080. My eyes tell me that other than last week, we keep on making the same mistakes, year after year. I am not for firing our coach in the middle of the season, but I still see a long standing problem, and it will not go away by playing like everything is great and that the fans are nuts…

WHY GEORGIA SHOULD BE CONSIDERING A COACHING CHANGE.
1-Georgia is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 and 2011
2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams. (2-10 record)
2- GEORGIA is now 14-14 in his last 28 games
3-GEORGIA is 6-10 in the past 16 SEC games.
4- REMAINING SCHEDULE. Games they will probably lose: 1- Miss St. 2- Tenn 3-Florida 4-Auburn. Games we should win (if we don’t have an off week): 1- Costal Carolina, 2-Miss, 3- Kentucky, 4- New Mexico, 5-Tech, 6-Vandy.

Do you really think Vince is going to say anything negative about Richt? He’s a true Southern gentleman. I kind of take what he says with a grain of salt.

Accept mediocrity and that’s what we’ll get and that’s what we’ve gotten. This season is just a tiny part of Richt’s recent body of work that is not acceptable. How many time have we started out the season or a bowl game completely unprepared or overwhelmed (remember the 2006 Sugar Bowl, the beginning of the 2006, 2007 and 2010 seasons, the Boise State game and of course my favorite, the mailed-in performance at the Libery Bowl?) The decision to start over should be made now, but not carried out until the end of the season. As I’ve posted many times before, the simple fact that this coaching staff has fractured the fan base speaks volumes.

Dooley was a great coach in a different era. That does not mean that he does not have some good insight on certain things. But for him to compare himself to Richt is not relevant or valid here. He had only one losing season and really never stayed down for a long time. For whatever reason, the Georgia program is not experiencing the same success as it did in his first 6 years. Donnan never had a losing season and lost his job due to mediocre results for a few years. When Richt arrived it was a breath of fresh air for the program. And sometimes a new perspective and rejuvenation is needed. I think the same is true now. One thing I thought to be humorous were his references to Joe Paterno. Paterno should have been shown the door 10 years ago even if he is the entire reason for their programs success over the years. And the same was true for Bowden after so many years of mediocrity. The truth is that the athletic program at a university is bigger than any one person and actually a lot of people depend on its success. It is sort of like the Brett Favre syndrome for coaches. While once among the greatest of all time, they just don’t know when it is time to quit.

Just remember one thing knuckleheads….change doesnt’t guarantee success. That’s the platform Obama ran on and look how this country has flourished since his election. One thing can absolutely be said about Richt. He has brought discipline back to this team and that’s the first step in succeeding. I don’t think we have to worry about UGA being handed any Major NCAA violations like other schools with coaches under the same level of pressure Richt is being put under. He has integrity and that dam hard to find these days. If you don’t think UGA is winning your blind. Stop looking at the score board for a second and look at what’s going on, on this TEAM. .

I keep hearing that this team is going to get better every week because “it has some great young talent”. We’ve had great young talent the last several years, but our winning opponents didn’t seem to be paying much attention to talent levels. From 2007 through 2010, the University of Central Florida finished with an average recruiting class of 60th in the country according to Scout.com. Boise State averaged 69th. Georgia averaged 16th during that 4 year period, including 2 TOP 5 CLASSES (2008 and 2009). If you are going to talk about beating people because you have more talent than them, you might need to find another reason if you want to remain optimistic.

Dooley. Adams and McGarity, say it ain’t so. You’re kidding right? At issue is not character. Mark Richt is a very good man from everything I have read about him.

But he is paid $3.2 million dollars to put on the field a team that blocks, tackles, throws carefully, etc. More so than his record as of late his team has looked and played awful.
if you fail regularly you are fair game for criticism. Every year cannot be about excuses for failure and rebuilding. In the SEC if a coach recruits finesse players, hires finesse coaches and attempts finesse play, he will get popped right in the mouth and be a loser.

You get slide off tackling, no blocking for your backs, too many dropped passes, too many fumbles, players are overpowered by the other teams personnel, and the head coach looks like he doesn’t know what the heck he is doing.

Look at Dan Mullen. He’s not coming through like the media and fans think he should. Watch him start catching hell. Dooley hits the nail on the head. Not everybody can be on top. If Mullen has two dismal years, he’s gone and no longer the media darling as up-and-coming coaches go. Let Rich have this season and then evaluate him.

I understand Dooley’s thoughts but doesn’t make me feel any better when you see Alabama, LSU, Auburn and SC flourish.
Miss State has lost 2 games but does anyone here really think MS is not progressing?
Mullen has them going in the right direction and their playing hard for him.
Our players are playing hard for Richt (except 1st game) but we are really talking about the past 2-3 years…years..not just two games.
Saban’s performance is no accident.

Tom, Resident Georgia Fan

MissSt doesn’t have the talent base, doesn’t have the talent on that MissSt team that FLA & UGA do… In other words, he’s not ‘expected’ to win more than 7 games anually, so when he wins 8 or 9 games & beats much more talented teams such as FLA & GA, he gets his credit.

I agree. I know now’s not the time to fire a coach, so I say let the season play out & see where we are at in November. If we don’t have AT LEAST 8 wins, I would be surprised if Richt stays — and those loses cannot include FLA & TECH.

@joe well thanks for bringing that up…if the UGA fans had that same bunch all we would have heard for the last month was that CMR has “lost control” of the program because of a bar fight.well the trolls would have said that and they make up the bulk of most of the blogs. And if you were paying attention LSU gave a roadmap on the way to beat them..you have to plan to score from 30+ yards out…you can move the ball on them between the 20’s but like Bama’s D they will not give it up inside the 20..

Mark Richt is a quality person and a good coach. Things do not look rosy right now but I believe that things will turn. The worst thing you could do for the team and for the University of Georgia is fire Richt now. I think the worst problem we have is a bunch of fans with nothing between their ears except maybe some beer soaked sawdust. True fans support their team and their school. Some of you who maybe played high school football 30 to 50 years ago and don’t have a life, need to get one. You ARE NOT football experts. Say something constructive or shut up!

Now, just think about that long enough to realize that you are dealing with people that are insane. My God, what are those coaches on over there in Athens? And hey just for fun, let another quarterback play please——- just to hand the ball off on a series of about 90 running plays ok—thanks yall.

Let Saban, Miles, Petrino and Evil Genius win all the ball games; who cares, but they will all probably go to hell. Mark Richt will not go to hell because as I mentioned before, he’s religious.

What with all this conference expansion, maybe somebody will form the “South Religious Conference” (SRC) and UGA can join it. Maybe get together with Notre Dame and Holy Cross and Belmont Abbey. We’d be big in that conference.

Y’all quit whinin’ and look at the bright side. We’re 1-0 against Notre Dame, but I’m not sure we ever played Holy Cross…

I too believe that Richt deserves more time (another season) to turn his team around. The man has done a lot to get to where he needs to be, BUT still has a way to go. If he hasn’t already, Mark may benefit by hiring an outside group to critique game film, practice film, and coaching. He needs an outside view with a critical eye to help turn the ship.

There is no way these headlines, fit the words in the story thereafter. All we do around here is to beat cupcakes (and not all of them) and run up stats vs just the cupcakes.

If they know what needs to be addressed why don’t they do it instead of losing every game vs good teams and sprinkling in losses to sorry teams too ?

No, I think the fans who try to make out that after the 2005 season, for these last six (6) seasons then, that they arrests and transfers out off the field and on the field # 30 in won / lost record are somehow the greatest we have ever experienced, are the problems with this program altogether by themselves.

What coach wouldn’t want to come here, where fans try to say we’re great just staring at all this off the field bad press yet again this 2011 season with the great exodus of our talent just leaving the program all of 2011 and on the field having once again not beat the good teams.

Now, we can go run up our stats vs cupcakes and tell everyone that we’re simply the best and better than we ever have been. What are we to measure ourselves by that which has been done after 1983 through today, or want to do more – and feel disappointed in the product actually provided ?

Vince Dooley and Mark Richt are just the same. Did some thing for the program for a couple of years, then ran the program into the dirt. When Dooley left, it was YEARS TOO LATE. Dooley, Richt and Adams can all go for all I care. And no matter what they say, Richt is going. UGA grad 90;on you truly need to shut your piehole about things with which you do not know. I and many others have been around much longer than you and have seen things that your young sensibilties can not comprehend. Coach Dooley is one of the most iconic people in college football history. He did not get that honor by being stupid. It never ceases to amaze me the way that you younger dawgs think you have the experience or knowledge to make a judgement on anything related to the state of the program. You are a UGA grad so that makes you damn good but calm yourself a little bit. Once you have seen 50 to 60 years of Georgia football your perspective might just change. Both Dooely and Richt have the same thing, class. Son you might understand what it means to have your school represented by class once you had enough time under your belt to see what it is like when you do not. I think that the downward trend is a blip on the overall radar. But, at least let the man finish this season and make a call then. Until that time comes get behind your team and support your coach no matter what. That is what it means to be a damn good dawg.

The bulk of thee kids are fresh out of high school when they come to UGA. All freshmen are generally poor at the college football level becuase of lack of experience. Well…that is why coaching is so important. Funny how 1 of our very best players right now is that LB kid that transferred from Southern Cal. I guess the coaching is better there……you think?

28 of Scar’s 45 pts were basically cheapie style points. Thats coaching folks. What kind of formation was Ga in when Scar took the fake punt for a TD? Thats coaching.

Murray’s inability to have the awareness to prevent that sack…fumble and TD….thats coaching.

The fumble by Crowell and then our offense cannot tackle and they take it to our 5 yd line? Thats coaching.

The pick 6 was Murray’s fault but….maybe if the coaches recruited better O lineman…Murray would feel more comfortable with his protection. Again…coaching.

5 losses….count them….five. IMO….as soon as Richt picks up his 5th loss…..and believe me…he will. The very next Monday….he should be fired.

9-4 Richt…that is what its going to take sir.

Coach Dooley hired Mark Richt. What else do you expect him to say? He’s not going to throw him under the bus. And saying that we haven’t recruited well? Georgia is 3rd in the past 12 years in NFL starters. And IF we hadn’t turned it over against SC? Newsflash…….the Dawgs did turn it over, and those turnovers count. Unfortunately, this is not something that has suddenly appeared. Richt has a losing record against Florida (2-8). That’s a decade of losing, not some overnight
problem or blip on the radar. Everyone on here wants Georgia to win, but Mark Richt had better step it up. Beating Coastal Carolina and playing tough against SC will never save him. Nor should it. If those are the high points of a season, God help us all.

Why want anyone talk about facts. Why does Ga. always shot themselves in the foot with mental mistakes. Why does Ga. always have a FG kicker with High Average of Scoring points in the SEC(signs of an offense that cant score in the redzone except for FG. Why does Ga. always have all there great players that cant make the Big Play(dropped interceptions, dropped passes, fumbles after interceptions) I see none performance from a lot of highly recruited players. Put there butts on the bench and play the ones that want to WIN…..GO BOISE STATE!!!!
Know go watch the first half of the SC game and tell me Im wrong. There should have been a minimum of 24 points on the board for GA at the half.
