The most significant change in the last four years has been Mark Richt's decision to relinquish offensive game-planning and play-calling duties. (AP photo)
I’m not sure how many people were watching College GameDay this past Saturday morning and saw the piece they aired on the Georgia football program. It was titled, “Discontent in Georgia” and I was among the individuals interviewed for it. Here’s A LINK to the video clip if you haven’t seen it.
But the real fireworks, I thought, came in the ensuing debate among the College GameDay panel, including regulars Lee Corso, Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit and a new castmember named David Pollack, who some of you may have heard of.
In any case, it didn’t paint a very pretty picture of the direction of the Bulldogs’ football program, and that was before they went out and lost to South Carolina 45-42 on national TV. I thought it could have been a little more balanced — surely they could have found some folks that would have defended head coach Mark Richt — but the general theme was that Georgia fans are unhappy with the way things are going and want a coaching change. That’s what set off the debate among the GameDay guys.
The problem when you do television interviews for something like this is, typically, they ask you questions for 15-20 minutes and they may use 30 seconds of what you say. That was the case here and that’s fine. I knew that going in.
But one of the things they asked me about that didn’t make the airwaves was what I thought had taken place that precipitated Georgia’s downturn. It was a tough question and, honestly, one that I kind of struggled with. But after rattling it around in my brain for awhile, I came up with the best answer I could at the moment.
The only thing I could think of that changed from 2007, when the Bulldogs won 11 games, to 2008-10, when they won 10 then 8 then 6, was Richt relinquishing control of offensive game-planning and play-calling responsibilities.
If you recall, it was after the Georgia Tech game at the end of the 2006 regular season that we found out that Richt discreetly turned over those duties to quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo for that contest. Bobo also handled the responsibility in the bowl game and, after being bestowed the title of offensive coordinator in 2007, has been in charge of the offense ever since.
Now this is not to say I think Bobo’s offensive strategies have been the reason for Georgia’s demise. That was not and is not my point. In fact, Bobo’s offenses on average have actually out-gained (387.21-377.76 ypg) and out-scored (31.28-28.13 ppg) Richt’s. It has more to do with the resulting fundamental change in the way Richt directed the program as head coach.
Think about that for a minute. For 11 years before Richt came to Georgia, he was quarterbacks coach and/or offensive coordinator at Florida State, which happened to finish in the Top 5 nationally every one of those years. For the majority of that time, he was game-planning and play-calling for the Seminoles. Then he comes to Georgia in December of 2000 and, after doing calling the national championship game with FSU, he hits the recruiting trail for the Bulldogs and assumes the same offensive responsibilities at UGA in addition to being head coach.
That goes on through the 2006 season, when he finally entrusts the Xs and Os to somebody else. It was an exhausting run, I’m sure.
But again, more than not calling all the offensive shots, this represented a profound change in how Richt went about his business, both on a weekly and daily basis all the way down to game management. That must have had some sort of effect on the way things have gone.
Anyway, I’m not sharing all this to say I’ve figured anything out. This is much more of an observation than it is a hypothesis. But it’s something I’ll continue to look into going forward. And, of course, there are so many other aspects that go into running a college football program. Evaluation, recruiting, coaching, training, injuries, academics, luck, they all have something to do with it.
But that’s what I’m asking you guys today. Here is the cold reality: Georgia is off to an 0-2 start this season. It is 14-14 overall (12-14 vs. FBS) and 7-10 in the SEC since the 2009. So, what do you think happened?
UPDATE: I asked Coach Richt at his presser Tuesday what he would point to as the main reason for the recent downturn. Here’s what he said:
“Last year we went through all that, and we talked about things that are a year old. Those are old. This season is the only thing I’m really concerned about, and obviously, we turned the ball over. Not only were they turnovers, they were turnovers for points. I guess there was five yards they had to track one time. Our defense basically gave up 17 points to a pretty darn good football team. They had no responsibility for the fake punt, the pick six or the fumble for a touchdown. They could have stopped them on the five yard line going in. Sudden change – that’s their job to turn it into a field goal. We just gave that one away.”

van gorder left at the end of 04. his influence fades over the next 2 years. cwm puts his stamp on the defensive philosophy/evaluations/management, etc. we all saw the result. the offense was putting up 40+ points a game and we are losing more, particularly the big games.
a mentality creeps in that “something will happen late in the game and we will lose”. snakebit.
strength coach becomes the spiritual coach, no workout/no problem. everyone loses the intensity richt had when he came into the program, including richt. what has become important is quality of life issues, i.e., everybody feel good, mission trips, etc. players feel entitled to playing time. how many times have we heard that someone should start because “he is a 5th year guy and put in his time” or this guy needs to be redshirted so he can be better prepared and learn the system.
the program ceased to be about who works hard and performs.
richt recruits well, but the top 10 recruiting classes under perform.
uga is now a great place to come and play and be seen and feel good for 3 years til you can go pro.
the reason you have to run a 2 back system (and other positions as well) is because no one is in good enough condition to play the whole game.
the only relevant question that the bulldog nation, coaches, and players need to answer and come to agreement on is what kind of program do you want? is it about winning and championship competition or about feeling good about ourselves as a person? one answer says change and stay in the sec, the other answer says remain the same and join the acc.

ColDawg, you make a great point with those average scores of Alabama, Florida and UGA, but Offense and ball control is an important part. Do you have states on time of possession and # first downs?
I know we have had a lot of big play scores under Bobo. It almost seems more of a focus than ball control. Unfortunately, that gets the ball back in your opponents hand quicker and tires your D.

Here’s what I think! Florida State has not been the same since Richt left as their OC. With that said, I have always said that things have not been the same at UGA since the Florida game when he allowed the whole team to run on the field. Think about it, every since that one particular event, things started happening………discipline wise. That was the change in the program. Before, you never really heard of UGA players getting into things(not saying they didn’t happen) but it was brought to the fore-front more. To his defense, two other things come to mind, injuries to key players and losing VanGorder as DC have led to his demise. Richt is a very solid coach, I hate to see him going through this. Guess what Dog fans……….if you fire him, he’ll definitely get another job if he wants it.

I think the wheels began to officially fall off when we played “The Alabama Blackout” game in 2008. The Dawgs had College Gameday in Athens for the first time since the early 90s ??? The entire country watched the Dawgs get slapped around on PRIME TIME television by a much more physical, disciplined, and hungrier Crimson Tide football team.
That game was flat out EMBARRASSING to the Bulldog nation. I was shocked at how awful the Dawgs looked and were just outmatched.

1-Callaway supplied coaching and discipline…not the HC
2-Van Gorder supplied coaching and discipline…not the HC
3-Mark Richt is burnout but he doesn’t know it yet but he’s starting to see that is possible.
4-His wife will help him understand his burnout and that it’s ok like Tommy Bowden to understand just where he is in life. There is more to life than football and that can be a good thing for all.
5-Mark will work with the UGA folks and seek a buyout that will help UGA (long term payout) and he will take years away from the game and perhaps return way down the road.
6-UGA just suck it up and get tuff this year. Show some class and support for the problem will be solved in months.
7-Now the real problem has to be addressed and that is selecting the right coach!! Both Alabama and Nortre Dame hold the record for selecting the worse collection of coaches in all of college football. Nobody and I mean nobody can match the failure of these two great football programs. Bill (where is my sunglasses Curry), Mike (it’s rolling baby) Price, Coach Fran(you guys hold the rope while I get out of town) and Mike (we’re close) Shula! Actually I think it was the Football Gods deciding that they’d had enough of the fairweather fans at Georgia and wanted to expose them to the world – and any recruits and their parents that may be paying attention – for the sniveling varmints that we’ve come to be. If we’d just stand together and spit in the eyes of the media wonder-boys whose only goal, including David Pollack, is to get the fights started and to continue to roil the lunatic fringe…and that includes whoever wrote this piece – Chip Towers I guess – all in the name of ratings and ‘hits’, we might just see how much more productive an ‘appreciated’ group of athletes and coaches can be. Chip,
The stats about Bobo does not mean anything. the real stats is how many teams in the top 25 did Bobo beat. his stats out of the chart when they play Charleston southern but when it comes to games that count he is TERRIBLE. and also our D was terrible since 2006 and that push our offense to score more, when you have Moreno, Stafford, green and Massiqua in the same team and you dont win the sec, you are fraud and should be fired. Georgia is the joke of the SEC and they only rely on the talent of their roster to be slightly competitive

The problem is Adams and the lack of Hargraves to gray shirt talent. When we were winning we could stockpile talent at Hargraves to keep reloading and cut loose players that turns out bad. Then we get restrictions from admin of Adams on recruiting only so many each year, reduced or no gray shirts, and limits to using Hargraves. Check the rosters. We used to be loaded with Hargraves on roster and in 2 deep. Now we have few if any Hargraves. Bammers still do it the old way and Bammer winning.

“UGA has lost their swagger and confidence…”
************************************
No, Mike Mobley, swagger is the one thing we haven’t lost. Our players strut around like roosters whenever they think they’ve made a play, whether they actually have or not. Not picking on IC, because I think he played a good, tough game vs SC, but he made a 4 yd run in the first half, was a yard SHORT of the 1st down, jumped up and began talking trash, gesturing, nodding his head, as if he had run for a long TD.
We’ve still got swagger.
I’m no fan of Bobo, but I think his game-planning and play-calling were the best I’ve seen since he got the OC job. The plays we so skillfully mixed and kept SC’s D off-balance almost all game, I wondered if aliens had kidnapped Bobo and a grad-assistant took his place . . .

There really is no difference between 28 and 31 ppg. What matters is how you score them and how you manage the clock. Bobo does not know how to manage a game. Your offense directly affects the defense. Vice Versa. Your D won’t do squat if you have them out there all the time. Clock management is one of the most important keys of the game. A rested D is a good D. I thought they did a good job of it last Saturday. Kind of got away from the run in the 4th quarter. Aaron Murray needs to get rid of the ball (throw it away!!!!).

The first part of your post is very classy. Yes, CMR is a Christian Man, Husband and Father FIRST! And regardless of me being a UGA fan since I knew what a football looked like, I respect that. All I have said through this whole thing is this. Let him finish the season and see what the complete year looks like. After only one losing season and one 8-5 season (that was enough to have won the SEC East last year), I think we owe it to him to let him finish it out to see what can be made of the year .. especially after pulling this team from the dungeon of mediocrity created by Goff and Donnan.

Recruiting, Recruiting, Recruiting.
We need to stop looking at the recruiting rankings and recruit guys for the system that Richt runs. Instead we go after the flash and end up with highly ranked classes that can’t perform.
We have not recruited the super motivated 2 star David Pollacks. We recruit based on measurables–and not heart.
We have a ton of kids drafted because the NFL looks at the same measurables we do! We are blinded by the # of stars and height and weight…and don’t look at the player–See also recruiting Cam Newton as a TE.
We also have not recruited the numbers neccessary on either line. No way a single injury should wreck a whole season. Every team has injuries…but it only seems to wreck a whole season for UGA. Owens goes down, Sturdivant goes down 3 times–and that is 1 season gone per injury.
Maybe our coaches make too many excuses and the players buy into those excuses. This season…look at our inside LBs!! “We can’t afford injuries at ILB because the dropoff is too steep.” Well coach couldn’t we have recruited an extra LB or two and one less TE!?
If you are thin at one position, you must be over someplace else–and these are coaching decisions. We are thin on both lines…thin at ILB; but don’t worry–we have 5, that’s right 5, guys on scholly that can play TE. Seems like 2 at most will see the field at any one time. That seem like a good use of a scholarship. I know we are thin at RB after the losses…but we could save a whole scholarship by not offering these 5′6″ RBs that never see the field–Richt has had at least one of these every single year. And how many heralded WRs have we signed that never see the field? Sweet lord…let’s get one or two less WR and some extra linemen.
We recruit the wrong numbers at the wron positions…and don’t look for guys to fill roles. We get as good as we can and try and force them into Richt’s system. We get beat consistently by teams who take the opposite approach.

I’m a Tech guy so my comment my surprise some people but I think panic is premature – yes, you’re 0-2 but you’ve played #5 & #12 and your defense gave up 11 fewer points than #12’s (you aren’t going to win many games your offense give up 14). I’m no dawg fan (in fact I despise them) but I will say I’ve been impressed that they played 60 min in both games – they easily could have rolled over against Boise where they were obviously overmatched (yes, there are good teams outside SEC) and/or given up after the 14 pt burst by SC (especially after the fumble) but they fought the full 60 in both. now the schedule softens up a little so if they keep their heads up & don’t get distracted by the torch-weilding mob I think 8-3 is still very possible which going into this year I think people would have been happy with…

Truthfully Mark Richt is in over his head, IMO. He doesn’t have the skill set and toughness to manage all aspects of the program. McGarity can help him with decisions, and Leadership issues, but can’t give Mark Richt a backbone. With McGarity’s help Richt can be more successful, but will never be a “championship caliber” Head Coach in today’s environment. I honestly don’t think CMR has the “self confidence” to be a winner on the football field. In the game of life, he’s a Champion. Look at the most successful people around you in sports, business, don’t most of them have some sort of a chip on their shoulder, daring people to knock it off.

It was the Florida “celebration” game. Go back and look. The Players knew that Richt was soft and would let them do whatever they wanted. It helped them win that year but hurt them the next and IMO made the program all about the players and not about winning football.

You are right on! I have been saying for two years that Richt lost his game management when he gave up his forte, offensive play calling. When he called plays, he was deeply immersed in the game. He had a great sense for the right play at the right time; ala the full back delay pass up the middle against Tennessee. Now he just walks up and down the sideline as if he is removed from the whole process. Some coaches are able to delegate effectively and get their subordinates to emulate the desired style and approach. Richt is not one of them. 2 Dawn Dad

Chip, I agree totally. The offense may look better on paper, but it is also a very undisciplined group. Lets not forget, Bobo had Stafford, Moreno, Massoqoui, and Green to help those numbers in 2007 and 2008. Since then, The Offensive line has nearly disintegrated, the RBs routinely fumble costing games, and the stupid penalties in the worst times keep mounting. Look at how the Boise game started? With False Start penalties. I’m not even touching his game plans. Bobo shows little or no ability to realize what works and stick with it, or make proper adjustments and stick with those.
Just like the defense under Martinez after Van Gorder’s recruits left UGA, the offense has become totally undisciplined and a general mess. Richt’s problem is the same as Tommy Tuberville at Auburn…he won’t let go of Bobo even though the signs are there that he is just not ready to be an OC. He is not qualified for the position.

Personally I believe the slide started the day Damon Evans took the athletic directors job. He saddled Coach Richt down with administrative duties and his coaches were pretty much out on their own without a leader. The first item on McGarity’s list of thing to do was to take the administrative duties away from Richt so he could concentrate on coaching. Boise was a fluke game. We did’nt have a game plan because we did’nt want to show Spurrier what we were all about. The same was true for SC, they looked really bad in their first game because they put in a limited game plan so we would’nt know what they were all about. Boise ended up being a much better football team than anybody knew. Coach Richt will be fine, the ship is on course, and we actually have a football team that is going to beat some people.

The reality is we have had poor coaching since 2007 on both sides of the ball. While Bobo has had occasionally good games as the play caller he isn’t consistent nor inventive. Other coaches know exactly what Georgia will do and when they will do it. It makes it easy for the opposing teams to defend against us. At the same time, we lost an excellent defensive coach and our defensive swagger. Our D has been inconsistent, soft and easy to move against. I ask you, how can a team win consistently with both a declining Defense and a predictable Offense? Unfortunately, Coach Richt has waited too long to address the issues. He hung his hat on Martinez and Bobo and has defended both too long. That’s a crucial mistake by the CEO of a premier program and one that he now has to live with. He’s a great guy and as honorable as they come but he’s demonstrated poor leadership by letting sub-par leaders guide the Dawgs program into mediocrity!
