The most significant change in the last four years has been Mark Richt's decision to relinquish offensive game-planning and play-calling duties. (AP photo)
I’m not sure how many people were watching College GameDay this past Saturday morning and saw the piece they aired on the Georgia football program. It was titled, “Discontent in Georgia” and I was among the individuals interviewed for it. Here’s A LINK to the video clip if you haven’t seen it.
But the real fireworks, I thought, came in the ensuing debate among the College GameDay panel, including regulars Lee Corso, Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit and a new castmember named David Pollack, who some of you may have heard of.
In any case, it didn’t paint a very pretty picture of the direction of the Bulldogs’ football program, and that was before they went out and lost to South Carolina 45-42 on national TV. I thought it could have been a little more balanced — surely they could have found some folks that would have defended head coach Mark Richt — but the general theme was that Georgia fans are unhappy with the way things are going and want a coaching change. That’s what set off the debate among the GameDay guys.
The problem when you do television interviews for something like this is, typically, they ask you questions for 15-20 minutes and they may use 30 seconds of what you say. That was the case here and that’s fine. I knew that going in.
But one of the things they asked me about that didn’t make the airwaves was what I thought had taken place that precipitated Georgia’s downturn. It was a tough question and, honestly, one that I kind of struggled with. But after rattling it around in my brain for awhile, I came up with the best answer I could at the moment.
The only thing I could think of that changed from 2007, when the Bulldogs won 11 games, to 2008-10, when they won 10 then 8 then 6, was Richt relinquishing control of offensive game-planning and play-calling responsibilities.
If you recall, it was after the Georgia Tech game at the end of the 2006 regular season that we found out that Richt discreetly turned over those duties to quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo for that contest. Bobo also handled the responsibility in the bowl game and, after being bestowed the title of offensive coordinator in 2007, has been in charge of the offense ever since.
Now this is not to say I think Bobo’s offensive strategies have been the reason for Georgia’s demise. That was not and is not my point. In fact, Bobo’s offenses on average have actually out-gained (387.21-377.76 ypg) and out-scored (31.28-28.13 ppg) Richt’s. It has more to do with the resulting fundamental change in the way Richt directed the program as head coach.
Think about that for a minute. For 11 years before Richt came to Georgia, he was quarterbacks coach and/or offensive coordinator at Florida State, which happened to finish in the Top 5 nationally every one of those years. For the majority of that time, he was game-planning and play-calling for the Seminoles. Then he comes to Georgia in December of 2000 and, after doing calling the national championship game with FSU, he hits the recruiting trail for the Bulldogs and assumes the same offensive responsibilities at UGA in addition to being head coach.
That goes on through the 2006 season, when he finally entrusts the Xs and Os to somebody else. It was an exhausting run, I’m sure.
But again, more than not calling all the offensive shots, this represented a profound change in how Richt went about his business, both on a weekly and daily basis all the way down to game management. That must have had some sort of effect on the way things have gone.
Anyway, I’m not sharing all this to say I’ve figured anything out. This is much more of an observation than it is a hypothesis. But it’s something I’ll continue to look into going forward. And, of course, there are so many other aspects that go into running a college football program. Evaluation, recruiting, coaching, training, injuries, academics, luck, they all have something to do with it.
But that’s what I’m asking you guys today. Here is the cold reality: Georgia is off to an 0-2 start this season. It is 14-14 overall (12-14 vs. FBS) and 7-10 in the SEC since the 2009. So, what do you think happened?
UPDATE: I asked Coach Richt at his presser Tuesday what he would point to as the main reason for the recent downturn. Here’s what he said:
“Last year we went through all that, and we talked about things that are a year old. Those are old. This season is the only thing I’m really concerned about, and obviously, we turned the ball over. Not only were they turnovers, they were turnovers for points. I guess there was five yards they had to track one time. Our defense basically gave up 17 points to a pretty darn good football team. They had no responsibility for the fake punt, the pick six or the fumble for a touchdown. They could have stopped them on the five yard line going in. Sudden change – that’s their job to turn it into a field goal. We just gave that one away.”

Right, everyone plays cupcakes. But only GT Joe tries to take stats racked up against cupcakes and compares them to a guy who has played two top 25 teams with two of the top front sevens in all of college football. That was the point, not “my team only plays 12 top 25 teams every year and your team plays half of your games against Div 1-AA teams”.

CMR missed a great chance when he hired DC Grantham instead of young wonder Manny Diaz. You watch Miss. State and they won’t be as effective without Diaz. CMR had his chance I understand it was more attrective to hire a PRO guy but I’m not so sure PRO guys and 3-4 works as well in college. Did anyone see UTAH STATE offense disect Auburn? Whos is their OC it was very impressive. Mike Bobo will do well maybe after the season CMR can add someone to help BoBo, UGA still have OL woes. But this will be turned around this week, mark my words. GOD will never let the RIGHTEOUS FAIL!

Success has to be sustained by change, redesign, and improvement. That true of nations, businesses and organizations of all types including football programs. I find the question of when things started this decline to be the wrong question. It started with remarkable success that was not accompaned by clear commitment and steps to sustain success. Bobo is only one question as to how that fits in. The real question is have, and are steps to achieve success again taking place and planned.
A football program is a system. A new experienced, aggressvive and capable AD is now in place. I think he is key person to make the judgment–not fans and reporters. It is clear to me that he is doing his job. Mark Richt is receiving much more guidance, measurement and accountability. I believe March Richt has responded to the situation and his own values with new efforts. The dream team and daily indications of sustaining exceptional recruits is clear. Yesterday, I heard an “expert” complain of the number of people who have left the program. I see those deaprtures as largely positive due to many examples of lack of commitment to the program. The willingness to play Boise State was another example of commitment to the future, although you could question it based on the outcome. I think the two games showed how far we have slipped but also the talent and evidence of commitment to play superior football.
Mark Richt has a great record. I won’t be able to tell until after this season whether he can get back to the top. I suspect that the AD feels the same. If I had to guess, I think he’s got a chance because of the coaching changes, recruiting advances, more commitment to the team success, stength and conditioning etc. His character, nature and values as a person and values beg for that chance. Calls to fire him to meet feelings of indivuals have the risk and effect of throwing bricks in our
life boat.

It has been so painfully obvious that Mike Bobo is incompetent as the Georgia OC. What has been become more obvious is that Mark Richt will not save his job and do what should have been done 3 years ago, move Bobo back to QB coach or fire him out right!
Now it is too late for both of them! Richt has cross the line and has sealed his fate. He is just palying out the string now, and the players and fans have to suffer through another year of Conference USA type football from our beloved team!!!!!

Mark Richt is not the problem. We are a young team. Young teams make mistakes. National Championship teams are loaded with Seniors. That means lots of Senior leaders. We have been young since 2007. If there is something Mark Richt needs to do better is get the talent to stick around for a senior year. Why would we fire the winningest coach in the last decade whom whould have put us in 2 national championships had the voters not screwed us. Use your heads folks. Give it some time!

Play calling by Bobo is so predictable. UGA had a drive in 3rd Q where Crowell had a 17-yd pass, then there was another play, then 17-yd TD to Crowell (pass, I believe). Next time we got the ball, we could have set up that same play to Crowell, but instead of throwing to him, had Malcom Mitchell go deep. Pump fake to Crowell, Mitchell would have gotten a step on his guy who’d have thought it was going to Crowell, and we’d have had another score. His lack of creativity is stunning; its almost like he’s not even watching the game.

I think BoBo is the problem, Richts fault for keeping him so long. BoBo knws how to gain yardage except when the preasure is on. We’ve had to kick far to many field goals when in the red zone and you don’t win in the SEC swapping fieldgoals for touchdowns. The other Defensive Coordinators’ out think BoBo when the crunch is on.

gt joe,
Oh wow, you average 34 points against UGA, but still you somehow manager to lost the great majority of the time. If you are losing when averaging 34 points a game, then your defense must be pretty poor, right? Now you have beaten two semi college programs and you suddenly think you have a passing game. You don’t get a lot of competition in the ACC, but let’s see how that passing game works against a quality team. It is too bad you do not play FSU and try that great pasaing game on them. Of course, you will get a chance to play at least one team, (UGA), that will shut your passing game down and give you a chance to see what passing really means. Tech. blogs need all the help they can get so you would do well, to go support your own team, and leave the big boy football, to supporters of the team that owns your school. When you actually accomplish something significant at your school and beat UGA more than once every ten years, come on back then. Until then, you are making yourself look like a fool, coming onto a blog concerning UGA and setting yourself up for ridicule and childish banter. By the way, wanna make a bet on your undefeated Tech. football season? I think I could find about 50,000 or so fans that would love to take your money.

I cannot believe we are having this discussion. It should be clear to anyone who sees Richt in action or even watches those dreadful Ford truck commercials, Richt is a dud. The guy is clearly not a leader and he is definitely not the alpha male in any room. That is why his players take advantage of him, goof off, and don’t learn how to play.
And yes, I know they beat Tech every year but that is because the superior UGA players are doing it for their own pride.

Bad scheduling – Damon Evans wanting UGA to be a national brand by playing ASU and OSU rather than by being Top 10 every year.
Think about it. Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss etc. can play 1 premium out of Conference game, and still schedule 3 weak sisters of the poor. Since we play Tech every year, if we play a BCS team out of Conference, we only get 2 weak sisters of the poor.
Scheduling matters at this level.
And for any Tide, Tiger fan etc. who scoffs at this, just schedule another BCS team on your schedule and you can talk. If not, shut up.
But that’s not the only reason we’re down. The SEC got better. Urban, Sabin, Petrino, Mullen, Spurrier and the likes came calling. And we were near the top, and became the target for many of these teams. You can’t be most everybody’s team they want to beat, and stay on top for very long. GT – War
Auburn – War
UF – Thermonuclear war
UT – War
SC – War
About half our schedule on a yearly basis is war.
Lastly, but most importantly is two Coache’s – Neil Callaway and Willie Martinez.
Callaway – What a great OL Coach. But he was a lousy recruiter, and felt like we didn’t need depth on the OL. When he left, we had no OL to protect Stafford or open holes for Moreno.
Coach Richt should have done a better job with oversight in this dept.
Martinez – A terrible replacement for Van Gorder. And he wasn’t a good recruiter for the secondary either. So when he left, after hurting the team for years, he left very little quality depth in the secondary.
Now as an addendum, Mike Bobo has been horrid against good teams. He’s been on the job for so long now, you’d think he’d learn.
I think we could have overcome Damon Evans boneheaded scheduling. But you can’t overcome bad coordinators and bad recruiters at their positions. Not now in the SEC.
So Richt failed as a Coach because he didn’t hire the correct coordinators – End of story really.
And I like Callaway, and he’s done a decent job with very little at UAB. But I don’t think enough is written about how he really singlehandidly cost us 2 years at UGA after he left, because he left us starting OL with no experience, and not enough strength in the SEC because they were starting as true FR., and were not elite for the most part.

I think that someone hit it on the head earlier…..the attitude and “swagger” that Brian VanGorder brought to the team made for a great atmosphere. Some of the Richt gameplanning and play calling may have some bearing, but the mental toughness that van Gorder brought was definitely an intangible element that many have forgotten. I can still see him on the sideline giving the Thumbs-up sign to his Defense.

I’ve said for a long time that Richt placing Bobo in charge of the offense is the reason for the downfall. Richt has placed people in charge of the things he was doing –he WAS digging in & getting his hands dirty –he was recruiting the guys he wanted running HIS offense; Now, he has let other people do those things for him, and it shows.

DISCIPLINE…DISCIPLINE…DISCIPLINE… It all starts with that. I am bothered by a team that comes out ‘BEFORE’ the game (Boise State)and goes to the stands and starts whooping and hollering to the fans. That is an emotion saved and earned for the winners. I believe before the game is the ‘quiet before the storm’ philosophy. Not the time for cheerleading, leave that to the cheerleaders! You’ve got a job to do and it’s not cheerleading. Then they go out and have penelaties in the first series. Frustrating. And Richt’s teams seem to have less disipline now than ever. Exactly why they lose players to suspensions, traffic problems, flunking out of school. Discipline runs deep and Richt has lost the displine the Dawgs were built on all the way back to Dooley.

Interesting argument about if Richt’s record would be better if he also called the plays or acted as the OC. The point is irrelevant, however, because Richt makes the decision each and every day about who calls the plays. An ordinary reasonable person would have concluded long ago that Bobo isn’t getting it done and would have made changes–either to return to calling the plays or to hire a better OC. Instead, Richt seems intent on riding down with the Titanic all the way to the bottome where the whale $hit lies.
So, come on folks. Let’s agree that Richt’s judgement is questionable at best, and destructive at worst.
Let him go now along with the entire coaching staff. Clean sweep!

Richt is a great Coach, and we will not get a better Coach if and when we fire him.
But we may hire someone who is not afraid to demote or fire a Coach who is failing, and who is not fixated on hiring from within as Rich used to be.
Make no mistake, Richt has grown as a Head Coach. He learned quickly you need depth at OL to win consistently in the SEC. This is not the ACC he was used to, winning on sheer playmakers alone like he did at FSU.
But Richt has failed because he didn’t manage his staff well, and didn’t hire well. He is now. Grantham, Olivadotti, Lakatos are studs. But he didn’t fire Bobo in time, and it will probably cost him his job.
He even kept his strength and conditioning coach to long, so LSU and ‘Bama were coming in here just physically dominating us.

The downturn, while the timing certainly coincides with the promotion of Bobo, is really more about a severe drop in the intensity level of the program. With leaders like Pollack and Greene, the team always played hard the whole game. The downturn really started with players like Stafford and Moreno who did not seem to be quality leaders at the college level. No one has stepped up to lead. Discipline on and off the field has been poor. That lack of discipline reveals itself in many ways: penalties, turnoevers, lack of effort on every play, suspensions, etc. The urgency is gone. At this level, any “let-down” is a recipe for absolute disaster.

When Brian Van Gorder left, we lost our edge on defense and that may have affected the other side of the ball as well. There were many times at the end of the game when the defense had to win it and we had guys who had heart, talent, and were coached up to make the plays. You can call it talent, coaching, or whatever you want, but we just do not make those plays anymore. On the offense side of the ball, Bobo is an average OC. We do not have enough big boys up front to win the battle that it takes to be a Top 5 or 10 team. Bobo’s stats may be good but his play calling is simply too inconsistent at key moments.

OK, you want directional changes, here they are:
1) When was the last time you heard of a player being arrested, for any reason, since the changes?
2) What happened to Washaun Ealey, Marcus Dowtin, Nick Williams, Demetre Baker, Brent Benedict? I’ll tell you, WE=Prima Donna, MD=Locker Room Cancer, NW=Didn’t like the playin time situation and was BFF’s with Dowtin, so he joined em, DB=Last alchohol related arrest-kicked off team-’09, BB=Although Benedict was not in the same breath as these other goofs, he didn’t agree with the way the TEAM was training, so he opted out, and CMR gladly let him for the sake of the TEAM.
3) AJ Harmon, Caleb King – Academic Casuelties
CMR IS going to get this program in the right direction. We are thin at 3 positions right now and it’s mainly because of what is listed above, MLB, RB, and O-Line. Recruiting since ‘06 has been wretched, until this ‘10 class comes in. You can not rely solely on freshmen to get it done. The ‘10 class may prove to be the best one yet under CMR. Just sit back, relax and wait for this thing to unfold and let the man do his job.
Go ask Tennessee what happens when you fire a proven, faithful coach who has and knows how to win, but just ran into a down period, and then hires a young name coach who gives you the stiff arm walking out the door.
