Notes: More touches ahead for Crowell, safety Williams gets look at LB

ATHENS — Freshman tailback Isaiah Crowell will get his first career start on Saturday against Coastal Carolina. Asked how many times he might like to get the ball in Crowell’s hands, Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo deadpanned, “45!”

He laughed, but Bobo was only half-kidding.

“I’d say he’s 20-25-carries-a-game guy and certain games it might be more,” Bobo said. “And then you’ve got about 15 or so for the other guy. You’d like to run it around 40 times a game, the way I see things. He might be able get 30 of them.”

The true freshman from Columbus got 18 touches in the Bulldogs’ 45-42 loss to South Carolina this past Saturday. He finished with 158 total yards – including 118 rushing – which works out to 8.8 yards per touch. He also scored two touchdowns.

Bobo feels like there’s a lot more production to be tapped. It’s a big reason the Bulldogs are giving Crowell his first career start this Saturday against Coastal Carolina.

“He’s a guy that has gotten better every week that we’ve had him on the practice field and in every opportunity he’s competed, whether it’s a scrimmage or a game,” Bobo said. “Like I said in the preseason, I think he’s going to be a very special player for us. When it happens, you don’t know. But I believe he’s going to be a special player if he continues to work and stay healthy.”

Crowell had started every game of his life since he was 6 years old before sitting behind Richard Samuel in Georgia’s first two games of the season. The 5-foot-11-215-pound athlete took Tuesday’s news in stride.

“Well, it’s not really a big deal to me,” he said of starting. “It’s just another game to go out there and help my team win.”

If Crowell is going to get more work, he’ll need to build up his stamina. Though head coach Mark Richt blamed some of it on a rib injury suffered early in the second quarter, Crowell was asking to come out of the game often against South Carolina.

“When a guy does that, you could say stay in there but you don’t know why a guy wants to come out when he’s asking to come out,” Richt said. “So he came out. I think he’ll stay in a little bit more than a couple of runs. Although there were a couple of relatively long runs, I think his endurance will build as we go, too, as he prepares and as the weather cools as the season goes on.”

Crowell said he recognizes that he needs to get into better shape and “make a better pocket” after a costly fumble against the Gamecocks. But he said he feels more confident than ever that he can make a difference for the Bulldogs.

“My performance in the game boosted my confidence, I guess,” he said. “It takes the pressure off a little bit. I feel better. My confidence is up.”

Shawn Williams works at linebacker

Safety Shawn Williams was observed working with the inside linebackers during Tuesday’s practice and could play there some on Saturday. The Bulldogs lost their starters at both inside positions – Alec Ogletree and Christian Robinson – to foot injuries the first two weeks of the season.

“We’re looking at quite a few guys in there,” defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said. “You’ve got to wait and see what happens. We’ll see, but anybody who has played the down safety can play inside.”

Williams, a 6-1, 220-pound junior from Damascus, started the first two games at strong safety. He’s third on the team with 10 tackles.

Blair Walsh: ‘That was on me’

Senior place-kicker Blair Walsh took full blame for the 33-yard field goal attempt he missed in the first half against South Carolina.

“That was my fault,” he said. “That was on me. I just came in way too close to the ball and just missed it completely. That was a one-and-only-time thing.”

The Bulldogs ended up losing by three points. But Walsh said it’s important not to dwell on that.

“Obviously it would’ve helped, but you don’t think about that,” he said. “You just move on.”

Walsh did say that, after watching game tape, he’s convinced Bacarri Rambo wasn’t offsides on the onsides kick Georgia executed late in the game.

“It didn’t look like it to me,” he said. “It was close but I think the angle the ref was at made it look worse than it was. It was too close to call, if you ask me.”

Compliance director leaving

Eric Baumgartner, Georgia’s compliance director for the past six years, is leaving to take the same post at the University of Virginia.

“He’s from Blacksburg, Va., so he gets to go back home,” said Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity, who said Baumgartner turned in his notice last weekend. “It’s an opportunity for him to go to a great institution that actually doesn’t have a compliance director right now, so he gets to build his own staff. Eric did a great job here. He came in at a really important time for our athletic association where we needed some strong enforcement.”

McGarity now has to make two compliance hires. Baumgartner’s assistant Michelle Francis recently left to join her husband at Ohio University. McGarity said he would hire a director first.

Etc. . . .

Nine true freshmen had seen action for the Bulldogs so far this season. They are: Crowell, defensive back Quintavious Harrow, linebacker Amarlo Herrera, defensive back Nick Marshall, wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, defensive back Corey Moore, defensive back Chris Sanders, cornerback Damian Swann and linebacker Ramik Wilson. There’s a good chance that number could go up this week with outside linebacker Ray Drew, offensive tackle Watts Dantzler and center David Andrews in position to get their first playing time of the season. . . . Coastal Carolina features 19 players from the state of Georgia, including starting center Pat Williams, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound junior out of Atlanta’s Westlake High School.

Please move Samuel back to LB and move Boykin and B.Smith to offense full time.

Our starting CBs cannot tackle and get blown out by WRs blocking them off the field.

Maybe all of the sad sack poor mouthers will realize they are doing far more harm than good. I hear Tech always has plenty of seats available for them. Hey Dawg fans, it’s time to step up and take responsibility for the only aspect of Georgia football we have control of – our fandom.

The quality of our fan base needs to improve as much as Bobo’s play calling did this past week. We need to be a consistent, strong, and supportive fan base. Do it for the players. They are dedicated and work hard. They are our boys.

Let’s go BullDawg Nation!

I’d LOVE to see Crowell get 30 touches a game. That would take so much pressure off Murray and allow the play-action to be that much more lethal. Linebackers and safeties have to respect the run, so they creep up, bite on the play-action, receivers and tight ends get behind them, and then there you go. First down. I love it.

No bowl berth for SEC schools absolutely does not mean no post-season monies for the school. Vandie gets a cut of all our bowl berths. If I need to explain revenue-sharing let me know. This is just an incorrect statement.

He has mismanaged the players.

He has played Favorites.

He has lost to the good teams.

He has lost to the sorry teams.

He has lied to his fan base.

He has lied to his players.

He has lied to his recruits.

Yes, he is 13-13 vs SEC East teams these last 6 consecutive seasons now.

Yes, he is 14-14 vs all teams these last 28 games, too.

But, he has NEVER beat the top teams when he was considered great and he has ALWAYS lost to the lousy teams, no matter how great our team was that season.

At least the haters can’t diss the dream team calling them busts. Crowell will be no bust, Mitchell will be no bust, and in time, the rest of the dream team recruiting class will make their mark. But the ones we expected to this season are doing just that. Crowell just might be SEC Freshman of the year if he keeps playing like he did last Saturday and if given the right amount of carries, this guy should have no problem going over 1,000 yards for the season.

Head-scratching Losses these 11 years of Mark Richt’s coaching staff :
(All these losses were either to teams who did not end up in the Top 25 that season, or would not have had we not lost these games to them that year.)

2001 LOST to Boston College who was not ranked before bowl, after # 21
2001 LOST to 5-Loss Auburn, not ranked AP Poll Top 25
2002 LOST to 5-Loss Florida not ranked in either Poll, Lost to 6-Loss two 5-Loss
2003 LOST to 5-Loss Florida ended up # 24 in 2003 fired coach but beat us 2003
2006 LOST to 5-Loss Kentucky unranked in any Top 25 Poll obviously
2006 LOST to 4-win Vandie, the 4 wins included their win over Mark Richt
2007 LOST to 6-Loss South Carolina 2007 not even in a bowl game South Carolina
entire season was OVER after losing early to So Car & vols, out of SEC Champ, over
2008 LOST to sorry Ga tek who would not be ranked without the win # 22
They lost to 7-Loss Virginia losing record, but Georgia tek beat us same year 2008
2009 LOST to 6-Loss Kentucky who lost to 5, two 6, and a 7 loss team but beat us
2009 LOST to Okie State who ended up not ranked in the AP Poll Top 25 even
2010 LOST to 7-Loss Colorado, losing record, and they beat us
2010 LOST to Florida a 5-Loss unranked Florida but they too beat Mark Richt again
2010 LOST to Central Florida who would not have been ranked without the win # 22
Southern Mississippi, NC State and Kansas State (7-6) all 3 beat Central Fl, not us

Tally : There are some other glaring losses in the Mark Richt 11-year era, but I leave you with these highlighted games to (1) try to ignore (2) say each of were just 1 game (3) figure out who he had suspended for the game that after the game he said it was the execution of the players we did have to play in the game that cost us the losses and (4) for you to squirm in your chair and come up with some hogwash excuse that you then think explains all these losses to sorry teams, way more than 1 a season for 11 years and counting, while at the same time, having beat no team who ended the season in the AP Poll Top 10 – except 3 years and all 3 of those years lost 4 games, lost 3 games and lost 4 games.

And if you get there, anything can happen that one afternoon when we face a team from the West (LSU). Mettenberger vs. Murray. That’s great. Last week was ONE game people. ONE game. I say we beat SC tomorrow off of hunger and intensity alone. Our goals are still right there. Beat SC and look at the rest of our schedule, we could be 6-1 heading into the Florida to get Ogletree back ready to go vs. Florida. Who knows what could happen? What if we go 11-1 win the SEC title? Based on what they inherited and really only having one recruiting class so far, I think our defensive staff is doing a great job making strides. We’re not back to the early 2000s yet, but anyone who expected it to happen overnight was not being realistic. Let’s face it- when you look at the lack of depth at LB and lack of playmakers on defense, the guys before them did an even worse job recruiting than we gave them credit for.

Well – UGA’s schedule the remainder of the season – along with the schools he will face being down this year (TN, FL, and likely AU – look what Utah State nearly did to AU) and UGA could very likely win the remainder of their games – save MS. There are no LSU’s, Arkansas, or Alabama’s this year. Besides them – the rest of the SEC that UGA has to play basically sucks. And Tech?? Forget them – Tech will play a close game, but then find a way to lose it at the end (as usual).

Here are the losses to the great teams who actually ended the season in the Top 10 :

2001 LOST to Florida # 3 by two touchdowns
2003 LOST to # 2 AP Poll LSU Biblical proportion blow-out & LOST to LSU twice
2004 LOST to # 2 Auburn in a blow-out
2005 LOST to West Virginia # 5
2008 LOST by a blow-out again to # 1 Florida, again
2008 LOST losing by 31-0 at half us # 1 to Alabama who ended up # 6 after Utah loss, we ended up # 13 AP Poll
2009 LOST by blow-out again to # 3 Florida, again
2010 LOST by blow-out to # 1 Auburn
2011 LOST in blow-out to a team who obviously will end up Top 10 since they play no one who is a ranked team all season long, not 1, unless # 25 TCU can stay there with their 1 sympathy votes after Baylor bears beat them.

Tally : Mark Richt has lost to the Top teams all 11 seasons, and this season is no different. By the way, if you find a season listed above in which Mark Richt did not lose to a team who finished that season in the AP Poll Top 10, it is because he did not even PLAY a team who finished that season in the AP Poll Top 10.

I have no idea what this is all about the defense has had 1 recruiting class only to work with. Mark Richt has been here 11 years, and this is not about Todd Grantham, other than Mark Richt hired him.

1976 beat # 11 Final AP Poll Alabama & was 10-2 ranked # 10, Mark Richt has not done either

4 Losses 2001. Including 2 losses to teams who either did not end up in the Top 25 or would not have without their win over us. Mark Richt bragged that he had knocked the lid off the # 11 all-time 1-A win football program by beating # 4 vols, but he lost 4 games.

2002 The SEC was DOWN, way DOWN. Proof ? In the final Coaches’ Poll, there was only 1 other SEC team ranked in the Top 25, # 14 Auburn. We played one team, Florida, whom our offense – which has averaged the # 52 Total Offense all 10 years and is # 52 again for 2011 – our lousy offense made 0 of 11 on 3rd Down Conversions for the whole entire game. Notice if you will please that that lousy team did not even make it into the final Coaches’ Poll Top 25, even with their win over us.

2003 was a most disappointing season. We lost 3 games. LSU beat us. UAB had us beat. Florida beat us, again and then fired their head coach for it. And, we were humiliated in the Georgia Dome 34-13. I am sorry, that is not pretty good.

2004 was David Greene’s senior season. In his 4 years he beat 1 team who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 and lost 4 games that season. Before the Florida game, South Carolina and Marshall both had us on the ropes. After that, with the DISNEYdawgs.com posting how great we were squeaking past Marshall and South Carolina, we go out the next week and lose to another coach who got fired for it, the vols, again at HOME. Our season was over; we were already eliminated from The SEC Championship. In his 4th try, he finally beat Florida one time. Then, we squeaked by Arkansas, squeaked by Florida, and before we squeaked by a lousy Georgia tek, we got BLOWN OUT by Auburn 6-24. If you think that was pretty good, you must not have liked my posts that season in here.

2005 we beat # 6 LSU in The SEC Championship Game. Great stuff. Only, like Boise State, we went to the Sugar Bowl and before I could sit down and stop booing Michael F. Adam$, the score was 28-0 in route to our loss at the Dome. The only difference in that and Boise State at the Dome, is I got a $20 T-Shirt that reads Bust Boise, with their 28 consecutive points too. Problem with the win over # 6 LSU in The SEC Championship Game is that both LSU and Alabama finished ranked higher than Mark Richt in the final AP Poll. Mark Richt ended up the # 3 ranked team in The SEC 2005. Oh, did I mention the lies of how great Joe Tereshinski III would be in Jacksonville, and our loss there, again ? Then, we followed that showing up with having to put DJ back in vs Auburn where he wasn’t 100 percent and we LOST to Auburn too. Pretty good ? For DJ, yes. For Mark Richt ? Absolutely not pretty good.

Where are we up to now ? Let’s see 2006.

2006 make Matthew Stafford # 3 QB on the depth chart behind both Joe Tereshinski III and Joe Cox. Lose to 4-win Vandie Lose to Colorado – excuse me yanked Matthew Stafford and squeaked out that win. Squeak past Ole Miss. This is where our football program is nowadays, trying to make it how great Mark Richt is in wins, without discussing the losses and nobodies he has beat. vols BLOW US OUT. Squeak by Missy State. Lose to Florida, again. Lose to Kentucky again. Pretty good ? Well, we beat # 9 Auburn. Hey look what a great coach Mark Richt is he beat # 9 Auburn. Is this really a pretty good season ? Absolutely NOT.

Thomas Brown

2007. Beat by a 6-6 South Carolina team not even in a bowl game. BLOWN OUT by vols who were at best an average team, which is more than can be said for South Carolina. The season OVER. Before it even started. Knocked out of The SEC Championship by nobodies. Soft Schedule. Beat not 1 single team who finished in the AP Poll Top 10, while LSU beat 2 teams who finished in the Top 10 in 2007; but according to RICHT-0-FILES Mark Richt got screwed by the BCS. Who did we beat ? Who did LSU beat ? Who did we lose to ? Don’t try to tell me that UGA should have played for the MNC and not LSU; you will not get anywhere in that discussion with this HOMER dawg fan.

2008. Ranked # 1 by every single poll for the 1st time ever in our entire history. That night, 22 players go out on the town celebrating it. We lose to all 3 teams we play. We beat no one. Again. All 3 losses, we give up 29, 31, and 42 consecutive points and end up # 13 in the AP Poll. Had we started out # 13, we would have finished not in the Top 25, where we should have been ranked. Did I mention a lousy Georgia tek beat us ?

2009. Joe Cox throws the deep ball better than any QB, with his chronic shoulder unable to practice 1 day every single week of the season. Gets the flu flies to Stillwater in a private charter. Still the only QB to play, when we know we have injured Aaron Murray and clearly should have played Zach Mettenberger for at least 1 snap to separate him from Aaron Murray. I’ll not even go into all the games we lost 2009. Okie State who did not end up in the AP Poll Top 25. LSU. BLOW OUT by the vols again. BLOW OUT by Florida again. Kentucky beat us again.

2010. Have to go back all the way to 1953, fifty eight years ago to find an UGA team who lost more than we lost last year.

2011. Dream Team. Addition by Subtraction of 26 scholarship players who got kicked off this team in the last year alone. 0-1. If Mark Richt loses Saturday will not have a winning record vs SEC East teams the last 6 seasons, standing at 13-12 over the last entire 5 seasons, as it is.

PRETTY GOOD ?

SEC Championship ? DOWN SEC 2002 is not Mark Richt’s fault but is it GREAT that the only other SEC team to finish being ranked in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 for all of 2002 is # 14 Auburn – a 4-Loss team ?

Problem with the win over # 6 LSU in The SEC Championship Game is that both LSU and Alabama finished ranked higher than Mark Richt in the final AP Poll. Mark Richt ended up the # 3 ranked team in The SEC 2005 in the Final AP Poll. SEC Championship ?

These are his ONLY SEC Championships ?

drbasic, sir, these are not STATISTICS – they are called instead our record, our won/lost record; who we in fact LOST to and who we in fact beat. Wins and Losses are not Statistics. Statistics are that little Aaron Murray averages 1 yard per carry for his entire career.

As for hater, we submit you are the hater, with porous, poorly thought out name-calling, begging that Mark Richt stay through the end of the year so that he can now play the 10 CUPCAKES that fill our schedule the entire rest of the season, including – but not limited to – the lousy bowl game opponent we get as a result, for the year # 11 in a row.

I love how the delusional Richt lovers keep spewing stats over how overwhelmingly the fan support for him is – young, old, whatever. I’ve been to almost every game since 1971, and the people I know from all ages and backgrounds can’t wait for a regime change. The media didn’t do this to Richt, he did it to himself. I’m a loyal fan and always will be. I love Athens and everything that is UGA. That’s why I can’t stand watching an inept (and stubborn) coaching staff pound this great team into oblivion.

Dogs will be alright. Slowly but surely Richt is righting the ship. It may not look it but the tide has turned. Give Richt and the team the rest of the year. Support them for two more months. If the wins don’t come then jump off the ship. Next year will be the year. Richt deserves the chance. It’s his team, he made his bed, let him lie in it. On another note, put Ray Drew at OLB and move Chase Vasser inside.

You know folks, all this negativity is not fun.
You folks are sucking the wind out of the sails of the players on the team.
They didn’t sign up for this crap.
Let Mr McGarity do his job.
Enjoy the season.

All the negativity, (media induced) is almost as much fun as a Republican sleep-over.

I don’t know what that mean’t either, but it was funny.

The poll asked the question :

Q: In your opinion, what should be the status of University of Georgia Head Football Coach Mark Richt?

Should remain the UGA football coach: 65 percent Should be replaced as UGA football coach: 20 percent No opinion: 15 percent

Obviously, one week ago exactly, when the poll was conducted the majority in fact supported that Mark Richt should not replaced a week ago now, not that day – thus, the poll is BOGUS. We as a fan base, do not feel that we are doing well. This is the question. I didn’t actually support firing Mark Richt on 9/6/11 either. That would make no sense, just as it would make no sense to not have already hired a consulting firm to start finding his replacement. We should be the 1st, not the last program to fire their head coach, this season. That should happen about 2 minutes after the Georgia tek game. The NFL will still be going on. The bowl games will still be ahead of us, although for year 11 in a row, our opponent will be no stinking good again. If the NFL team is not long in the play-offs, we could have a coach from the NFL; and if it is a bowl team coach with experience, then we can announce he is coming here right then. I do not believe we are a fanbase out of control, that we expect too much from a program which is no good because if we were no good as a football program, what are all of us doing ? Well, what we are doing is expecting more than not even in the Top 25 in won/loss record over these last entire 6 seasons now including this one – for a football program which instead is # 11 all-time in 1-A wins.

The question should have been

Q. In your opinion, is University of Georgia Head Football Coach Mark Richt getting the job done now ?

That answer is an emphatic no. So, the poll question was from 3 days prior to South Carolina game and it asked the wrong question. Now, is not when a coach in college is fired – unless he does something that we have to fire him; it never is done for overall performance of the entire last 6 seasons, in September. There is no purpose in it. You cannot get a new coach in September, and if we wanted to do that now today or actually a week ago, we would have done it prior to this season.

Poll Question is therefore BOGUS.

BOISE STATE went on 3 years NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL among other sports.

Boise State does not have a blog where anyone can write that, do they NICK ?

But, since you are in here, in this blog, we can say it here. You could try to give us your EXCUSES about it, like Georgia tek does, which is NOT to reply to it at all, but to pick on the poster – the messenger – he discusses it. That is I.

3 Lost Scholarships per season in Football, each of the next 3 Seasons Boise State.

If a football team is on probation, they are not supposed to be eligible for the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 rankings, and if that were applied to THIS SEASON, then Boise State would have no chance – despite the fact that they play no one all season long. Beating the # 7 team in The SEC, although argument could be made that over the last 3 years, we are # 11 team in The SEC, is so great Boise State.

South Carolina is obviously no good. If you cannot see that, you don’t understand the game. There are many people who have played the game, and do not understand the game. I played the game, and there are those on this blog right here who say that I do not understand the game. I certainly don’t think Mark Richt knows what the blazes he is doing – especially with mismanagement of the talent, and especially too with hiring and firing of his “coaching staff.”

And we, we get to play 10 cupcakes including the cupcake in the bowl game 11 years in a row, the rest of this season.

NCAA PROBATION BOISE STATE

How many carries did Latimore have last year against Georgia early in the season. The kid showed up at South Carolina in shape. Georgia’s ball control is why Richt is losing games. Are these Columbus high school jocks ever in shape when they show up at Georgia. You try to overcome these guys with a pass offense that every defense in the conference knows how to stop. Your defense stays on the field too long, even when you score on offense you do it too quick and the defense is back on the field. Eight in the box fourth quarter and Latimore still ran over a tired defense. With Georgia it is always about the refs calling something wrong. Walker ain’t coming back to Georgia. Stop worshiping every other running back in the name of Walker and make these guys work for their living.

Facts are clear: UGA wins them all in the SEC and SC loses two, UGA can go to the Dome. UGA could lose one more SEC game BUT SC would then have to lose three with the head to head thing.

Let’s see what happens.

UGA will re emerge in future years and possibly, this year, as the kids develop. Time will tell.

Ideally, UGA could have the luxury of moving richard Samuel back to LB and replace him at # 2 with Boo Ken Malcom. I really wanted to see him playing by now. He is a bruiser and could add new dimension to UGA’s running game by being that man that can pound it up the middle. Carlton Thomas and his cousin Hartley( correct name?) can be the scat backs and they could be supplemented by that Wesely Scott kid and others that have ball skills and can fly.

I also would develop Christian LeMay in certain formations at QB, to either to run or throw on the run. Why red shirt him?

You must really be in need of typing words. Must be therapeutic. I hope it is.

If you listen to our AD amd if you have ever been in a position where you have to carefully choose your words, you will see his obvious plan.

I’m not going to give anyone a history lesson.

I am going to tell you my opinion as to what is going on.

1.)Schedule Boise State-Gives Richt the opportunity to make sure the focus is there over the summer. Also gives McGarity the ammo to say to Coach Richt-”We had the opportunity and you didn’t get it done”.

2.)Week to week evaluation-This is his smartest plan. He will not fire the Coach during the season unless we lose this week. He has a plan to announce once the season results warrant it. He very well may have been in discussions with coaches and their reps behind the scenes.

If we win out, Richt is back. If we lose more than 1 game including Florida, McGarity will make the announcement of Richt finishing out the year and that he won’t return.

All this is my opinion. If you have supervised anyone, you can see GM is giving his employee every chance to succeed and change UNDER HIS WATCH.

Everyone on here knows where I stand. But, I have had some time for reflection. It does not matter whether we keep CMR or start over with someone new. Why? #1, this is CMR’s first job, and therefore, this is the first time he has seen trouble. I mean geez, he has had ONE losing season in 10 years. And yes there has been, roughly a 3-4 year slide. But good or great teams don’t go 12-1 one season and 6-7 the next. There will be a few slips here or there as you hit bottom. But this is not ROCK BOTTOM, right? If CMR, goes to another school, he will no doubt reflect on his mistakes here, correct them, and go on to coach another team to great heights. At present, however, he simply got caught with his pants down. He never changed the way he coached or how UGA went about his business. He dd not incorporate new ideas, methods, and techniques into the program in a timely manner. When times got rough, he went back to the same well, instead of taking heed to the innovations happening around the college football game. It’s foolish for us fans to think, that after a 6-7 season, and the coach admitting he has been out of the loop, that we could clean up this mess in 8 months. And definately not against Boise St. and USCe. I know, UGA should NEVER be surpassed by Boise St., but in some years, like the present, it’s reasonable. CMR has mismanaged the roster, trusted some players too much off the field, doesn’t trust his young players on the field, has not updated or expanded the offensive playbook, failed to establish a consistent defensive identity, and plays too finesse in the SEC. The #1 thing he needs to do is demote BoBo to QB coach and hire an OC from outside the program to revamp the offense. Unfortunately, after spending 2.25 mil on CTG, a new DC is needed. Regardless of whether the players can execute a 3-4 to perfection, the tackling, toughness, aggressiveness and intelligence of the defense is poor. It’s sad, but the entire defensive staff needs revamping, again. The next set of defensive coaches need to be great teachers of the game, not fulfillers of NFL dreams. College players need to be TOLD where to go and what to do, not given a “defensive assignment”, like in the pro game. Rodney Garner needs to go. He has been around too long and he his message, whatever it is, is getting stale. Besides, he is losing TOO many recruiting battles to Auburn and Tennessee, two schools who wanted him badly. I know I just called for a complete house cleaning and to keep the HC. It may seem as if I’m trying to make them scapegoats. But I’m not; CMR is completely responsible. But he has learned from these mistakes and moved on. He has to correct what went bad, all while being under fire. He doesn’t get to hunker down in the lab, go for a practice round, or take time off to reflect. The football program or any other football program he coaches, will be in good hands. Just remember, we have all did something for the first time, screwed it completely up, but we became better at what we do and became better people for it because we never gave up. We can spout off list after list of coaches, but NONE OF THEM FIT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, BUT CMR DOES.

And to further clarify my short essay above, my point is this: Whether he stays or goes, there will be a 1-2 “down” years before we see the team at the level the fans feel they “should” be. The only way another coach comes in here and catches “lightning” in a bottle, is if he has head coaching experience, and some great play callers as OC and DC. I personally would like for UGA to hire Herm Edwards as DC, he loves kids, is a great teacher, coach, and motivator. And being on TV every other day would not hurt. And we all know Herm “plays to win the damn game”….lmao

Flat tire, so booing the program is ok, huh? In no post did I mention that “the leak in the ship is nothing to worry about.” While I am concerned for my Dawgs, I will always show support. Negativity only breeds more negativity. If you think that your negative opinions (what is it they say about opinions?) will help the program, then maybe you should take a look in the mirror when pointing the finger. Really, do you actually believe it helps? The interesting thing is that other school’s so-called fans are following the goings-on of our team. Let me guess, are you a Tech or Gator or something else?

Crowell deserves as many carries as we can give him! Keep up the good work IC!

Also this is m response to Bill King’s blog, from which, I am still inexplicably banned:

Respectfully, Mr. Maisel is looking at only 2 data points: the Boise State and USC games. Well, many of us UGA fans have been fans for many many years. We remember Richts 10+ years, The Donnan years, Glen Mason’s 15 minutes, The Goff Debacle, and The Dooley Era.

While I will agree that you can’t compare teams of different years to each other as the players come and go…when you look at the past 5 years worth of data points during Richt’s tenure, you see a program in decline.

Gone are the days when the dawgs are behind but we just knew the defense was going to make a huge play to turn the game. Gone are the days when when 1:45 on the clock was an eternity for our offense.

More recently, when the game is going well for the dawgs, we are waiting for something bad to happen. And when that bad inevitably does happen, the team goes in the tank. Once it starts going bad, it stays bad and for 4+ years the team and the coaching staff has given us absolutely no reason to think that they can turn the game back around.

We have been conditioned by the team and the coaches not to expect a come back. We are conditioned to expect disappointment. The Florida game is a perfect example. Do any UGA fans truly believe we will beat Florida–this year or ANY year?

Until Mr. Maisel has donated to the Hartman Fund, purchased season tickets, and experienced the same level disappointment we UGA fans have for the last 5 years…He can not shame any of us for leaving a game early.

GREAT points slydog .. and I do think Herm would be good here. Saw him in Tampa obviously. Think Tony Dungy would come out of retirement?

Eh, probably not. I know many don’t think that Petersen from BSU would come down here to coach should CMR not be retained after the season is over, but what about his OC? I think we need to find either a hot College HC from an up and coming program or an innovative OC from a school with a high powered Offense. Not many quality NFL head coaches are looking to dive in to a college program and there are some that we really wouldn’t want here at UGA.

Mr. Maisel is a REPORTER who is forced to stay at the game, write stories on a deadline, and interview as many coaches, players, administrators, and fans after the game. Fans, unlike Mr. Maisel, have to drive and be stuck in alot of game day traffic, which can be a dangerous situation. Fans are getting beat up, stabbed, shot, and tased by other crazy fans at games. Fans have their kids at the games. Fans have to go get something to eat cause they probably starved their a%$es off at the game. It’s not about support or disgust, but simply, the show is over. Have fan’s missed some great moments, lie comebacks? Sure. But getting back to their “regular” lives are far more important than being entertained. It his HIS job to stay at games, not the fans. Therefore, that makes him a snobbish jerk, or at worse, a lack of perspective.

Hey Towers, either you do something about the Thomas Browns on this site, or we’re gonna do something about you. It’s time…it’s time…for the fairweather, caterwauling, naysayers, including TB, to be stuffed in a box and thrown in the Oconee or something…and those, like here, that give them unlimited access to attacking the coaches and players, need to become a part of the process of ‘Richt(ing) The Ship’, or we’re gonna find ourselves another blog.

As for whoever wrote the piece talking about how excited young Mr. Mettenberger (if it’s spelled wrong, I don’t care) was about getting to throw touchdown passes against an over-matched, and already hopelessly out of it, directional team last Saturday,..I noted that the litany of transgressions they listed about why he was kicked out of Georgia didn’t include the main things that got his a$$ run off. Namely the two sexual assaults on the young Valdosta State coed and then the lying to his coaches and the Georgia Athletic department (hell, maybe even his momma who worked there) about it. Yeah, let’s don’t include those little items. Point is, the Mettenbergers and the Newtons of this world will, forever, continue to pull crap until they find out that there are consequences for breaking the law. They both should have been banned from any other SEC school for, at least, two years for what they did. But instead all they had to do is, basically, sit out a season – it’s just like they transferred for God’s sake – and return to ‘the most powerful, highest profile, conference in the nation’ with the opportunity to go on to bigger and better things without having to pay any price at all.

What if we go 10-0 the rest of the year? Will you still want Kirby Smart? Saying we need a “proven” HC is one thing, getting one is another. In many ways CMR is a “proven” HC. Yes, the last couple years have been really bad. Let’s see if he rights the ship. I think he will. BTW, the writers keep bringing up CMR being on the hot seat; that’s because they read these blog comments. Then the national media pick up on what the local writers write…and fall for it. I agree with you William@202am…the Dawgs need our support. If we lose 2 or more games the rest of the way, then it’s time for a change; at the end of the season, not now.

Not sure this kid is built for 25-30 ‘carries’ a game – maybe ‘touches’, cause getting him the ball on screens and drags will really open it up and avoid a lot of the ‘hits’ from just taking handoffs.

Cam did a couple of dumb college kid things at Florida. In the two plus years since, he has done nothing but keep clean, stay positive through all the racial bias thrown his way and succeed. Mettenburger has not, to date, straightened out ANYTHING. If he could have beaten out Murray, then he should have no problem beating out Jefferson and Jarrett Lee. He hasn’t done it yet. I graduated from UGA, did you? While my support of UGA isn’t important to you, the players should be if you are the fan you claim to be… You once stated that you don’t bash the players, but the coaches – which is something you do on a regular basis. Now, do you think the players do not hear those things? Negativity breeds negativity, no matter where it is directed, especially the third game into a young season. Honestly, do you think your negativity makes a difference in the scheme of things? But I digress, whatever direction in which the program is moving is irrelevant to my support. Get ready: the most likely candidate and probably the best one out of the small pool of HC with big program experience is….. Mike Gundy of Oklahoma St. After that, Charlie Strong and Dan Mullen. Urbam Meyer isn’t welcome here. And before anyone slams Gundy, look at what he did AFTER Les Miles left for LSU. And we certainly don’t have to worry about emotion or fire. Bud Foster and Tom O’Brien of Penn State are next up, but may be too comfortable where they are at currently. The next hottest asst. coach is Brett Venebles of Oklahoma. That’s it folks. Not much left out there. My suggestion to CMR is to hire Mike Leach or Rich Rodriguez as OC and Herm Edwards as DC.

The D played well enough to win the USCe game. The problem was turnovers, which happens to all teams. Coaches can correct that and kids learn. The O put enough points on the board to win the USCe game. Take away the mistakes and UGA wins. That is also coachable. I for one was pleased to see that this years team continued to play even being down 10 points with 3 minutes left in the game. And, given just a little more time, I think that UGA would have won this game. And, according to his comments, I think that even Spurrier agrees with that statement.

So all of the hate and spew on this blog is not helpful to the program nor does it represent the reality that this year’s team is different from last years team after having lost how many players from last year? (I am sure that one of you statisticians can tell me the number). I see a different attitude and I am as happy about it as I was unhappy about last years attitude.

Let McGarrity do his due diligence. I suspect that 2nd place in the East with a win over my Gators will keep Richt his job. But all of this griping after losses to 2 top 10 teams is crazy. The man has earned this season without the fans after his job. I am sure that McGarrity already has a short list and will be on it if UF wins again in Jax which would almost assure UGA of no better than 3rd in the East. Until then support the team AND Richt.

Kool-aid drinkers .. wow, that’s still the only real card you play Flat Tire. As for the Bama comment, you forgot to mention the Mike DuBose, Dennis Franchione, Mike Shula “experiments” I guess. They got lucky in catching Saban at a time when he didn’t want to be in the NFL any more after a couple of seasons. Even then, he started 7-6 his first year, then a nice second year only to lose to UF in the SEC title game and freaking Utah in the Sugar Bowl.

Let me state this one more time for you though. I am not saying a move may not be in order. But even Bama isn’t dumb enough to do it midseason. Oh, and that great list of coaches mentioned prior to finding Saban led them to multiple NCAA penalties from two separate seasons.

Let the season play out. If it ends as difficult as it has started, then yes, we move on to someone else.

Seriously flat tire you and thomas need to find another team, what;s the rest of the SEC records vs top 10 teams , do you know? Again all the negative stats and none of the positive, Florida has won 2 SEC championships, since Richt has been at UGA has won 2, bama has won 1, Auburn has won 2, Lsu has won 3. you continually mention richt didn’t win with Moreno , stafford etc, 2008 18 season ending injuries to scholarship players , 24 season ending injuries total, not an excuse but a fact. bama in 2010 was preseason #1 finished 10-3 , just like UGA in 2008.

Get that man as many carries as he can handle, because he is going to be very good. He is good for t5his team and he will be a team player andleader like we need. I think Murray, although he needs to cut down on mistakes, is also an effective leader so the future looks bright for the offense. The OL I thin was 100 percent improved from week one, but I sure wish we had some more bodies to back it up. Oh well, perhaps recruiting will take care of that this year for next at least.
thomas b.
Are you by chance trying to get a job as a statistician. Why stop at the 11 seasons CMR has been the head coach. Why not go back since UGA started playing football and compare every coach UGA has ever had to his record. Maybe you can get a job as a stats. man for the AJC. What the hell, you write more on the blogs than they write in their columns. Their editors don’t allow them to use that much space.
If CMR can show the fire I saw last weekend on the sidelines, he can come out with a solid record for this year, but more importantly, his young kids will be a force in 2012. These young man, although the record is 0-2, have shown they want to play and are standing behind their coach and team 100%. This is a definite improvement over last years team and bodes well for the future of UGA football. Go hard at recruiting some big uglies and this team, although a project, will be a force to dealt with next year, and no light weight for any of the remaining teams on this schedule this year. The offensive game calling last week, leads me to believe that CMR had a little more input than in previous games as they actaully had a fairly good game plan and kept SC on it’s toes. Their offense scored 17 points. Our mistakes killed us or we would have had a W. The OL line was much improved and until the defensive line wore down late in the game,Lattimore wasn’t a world beater either. Of course, everybody knew how Garcia reacts to pressure and he did not disapoint last week, once again. That is why SC will not win the SEC and hopes to maybe win the East.
It would behoove us all, myself included, to wait until the season is over before passing judgement on CMR and a need for change. I do believe though, that Bobo is not DIV. I material at OC, and if I am correct, and CMR did have a lot more input into the offense last week, CMR will find another OC, but that will depend on the season.

This is 2011, not 1951. And yes, I threw color in there cause the mud was already on the wall. Why? Am I missing something. ” Crowell recognizes he needs to be in better shape”. What are the summers for? Georgia looked gased in the 4th quarter of both games. I am not sold on the new strength and conditioning program. The first thing noticable with Saban was the change in conditioning during year 1 which took off in year two. I will say, if CMR can get the right conditioning program Georgia will be a beast to deal with. My takeway from first two games. Georgia is as talented as anyone with first unit. Depth lacking an as stated conditioning still needs work as well as discipline, too many seperate parties going on from the sideline during games. Does not appear everyone is ready should their number called. Right head coach will inherit a gold mine.

As far as Crowell needing to get in better shape…hhhmmm let’s see. If you HAVE NOT PLAYED live, in game football for about 9-10 months, like Crowell, then getting pounded by the biggest, fastest, players you have ever played, two top 10 teams none the less, is going to smoke your butt silly at first. All players, be it fottball, basketball, or baseball, are a little fatigued to start a season, then their bodies adjust to it after a couple of weeks. Look at the Falcons. Yeah they got whipped, but not too many teams in the NFL are in great, physical condition right now. The tackling and the timing is poor across the board, at all levels of football. Give the kid a break; And it’s not the 100% responsibility of the coaching staff to get any kid in shape. Even the Army isn’t responsible for each soldier being in shape. It’s up to you.

WHY GEORGIA SHOULD BE CONSIDERING A COACHING CHANGE.
1-Georgia is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 and 2011
2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams. (2-10 record)
2- GEORGIA is now 14-14 in his last 28 games
3-GEORGIA is 6-10 in the past 16 SEC games.
4- REMAINING SCHEDULE. Games they will probably lose: 1- Miss St. 2- Tenn 3-Florida 4-Auburn. Games we should win (if we don’t have an off week): 1- Costal Carolina, 2-Miss, 3- Kentucky, 4- New Mexico, 5-Tech, 6-Vandy.
LOOKS LIKE A 50/50 CHANCE OF ANOTHER LOSING SEASON.

THE ABOVE SAYS……. NO!

Your points are good squacher but that’s about a 2 year evaluation. If it continues through the rest of this year as you predict, yes, we need to make a change and as good of a man as Mark Richt is, he will land on his feet and come out MUCH stronger. And I think we all have our very own shortlist of who we think should run the team next.

All that being said, I don’t think they lose to UT, and the team that played USCe could win 2 of 3 against Miss St, Auburn and Florida. Again, we should let the season play out. Beat Miss St, UT and UF and you have a 9-3 record and possibly win the SEC East depending on what SC does the rest of their schedule. If not, the axe will fall.

The Fulmer cup crap was started by such classy individuals as yourself flat tire. Fulmer cup refers to a lot of things, not just arrests. Like the fact that Fulmer teams were loaded with arrested players who stayed on the team while Richt teams saw guys like possible future start QB Zach Mettenberger kicked out of UGA. To put Phil Fulmer and Mark Richt in the same sentence when it comes to clean programs is laughable at best. The other SEC coaches respect the program Richt has run with UGA. Same could NEVER be said about Phil Fulmer. They had a going away party for him AFTER he was gone.

You bonehead, I acknowledged both of your childish little names. What part don’t you get? Is freaking 5th grade still to tough for you? You’re quick to mention 30 arrests, but like all of your other posts on here, you don’t mention the results of those (player suspensions, players removed from team) and you don’t dare try to compare UGA to any other school. No offense to my buddy UF fans on here but please, take most 3 year spans and compare what their players have done. You want a championship but don’t want the kids that will get it for you? Because not recruiting these kids is the only way you will reduce 30 arrests. Coaches can’t have complete control over any kid’s life.

But have you seen major scholarship costing, post-season costing NCAA violations at UGA since Richt has been there (unlike current BSU)? Nope. Have you seen Richt getting into heated exchanges with other SEC coaches because he ratted them out for the same thing he was doing (like Fulmer did)? Nope. AJ Green got accused of the same thing that the OSU players did that ultimately cost Jim Tressel his job and OSU a lot of violations. UGA and CMR handled the AJ Green thing WITH the NCAA and nothing else happened. But look at OSU.

ACE,

Crowell doesn’t have the power backs body to run over anyone. That doesn’t make him any less a successful back, just another type of back. If he can avoid contact and juke his way to 100+ yards a game against, supposedly a great defense like SC is supposed to have, I’ll take it. Less contact means less injuries.

There is nothing in the U.S. or GA. constitution that says you have to graduate from a school to be a fan. I never played for the Braves or Falcons but I’m a fan of them too.

The only thing one needs to do to be a fan is buy a ticket or listen on the radio and watch the team on the television. Does anyone think the ESPN advertisers care whether or not you personally attended the school or gave generously? A clue to that question is “no” they do not

It’s more fun picking on the idiots! Bottom line is the season will play itself out and McGarity will make determination about CMR’s future then. Nobody should be calling for CMR’s head in the middle of the season – will only make a bad situation worse.

Again, compare it to other schools though. Does UF have a lot of arrests? Believe me, down here and in Orlando, and you can bet in Gainesville, those numbers are big news. But do they still win? Yup. It’s not sugar coating. Sugar coating would be me justifying it by saying well this many of them are for failure to appear in court for a traffic stop or some crap like that. It’s just the truth. Players in other schools get arrested often also. Coaches from the SEC meet every year just to discuss what to do about stuff like that because they don’t want the NCAA (another communist organization) involved in it.

New Kid said “Bottom line is the season will play itself out and McGarity will make determination about CMR’s future then. Nobody should be calling for CMR’s head in the middle of the season – will only make a bad situation worse.” .. and I couldn’t agree more. First off, McGarity doesn’t need our help in firing a coach. He will do what he feels he needs to do and that’s that. But doing it in the middle of the season is just dumb.

Lets have some clarity about what I want

#1 How about beating FL 2 yrs in a row or every other year
#2 How about an SEC EAST Championship every 2 or 3 years
#3 How about beating top 10 teams again even if you go 8-4
#4 How about an SEC championship once every 4 or 5 yrs
#5 How about UGA fans shut their mouths during the pre-season talking trash about this is the year
#6 How about having an upset like Dooley used to do instead of losing to teams that are ranked higher than UGA

I really am not asking too much from a staff that is paid $5 million a year
Oh and notice I said nothing about a NC even though that would be nice

Ok Flat Tire, this is stuff we can work with.

1. Agreed, I love to beat Florida and would like to go back to the Dooley years when it was like playing GT, you assumed the win and every loss was considered an upset.

2. He has won the East outright twice and tied for it 2 other years.

3. 2006 and 2007 were great years for this example. 2007 they finished the year with 7 straight wins including 4 ranked teams, one being a Tim Tebow led UF team. 2006 they finished the season 9-4 but that included three wins at the end of the season all against ranked teams, one was AT #5 Auburn. 2005 included wins over #3 LSU, #7 UT, and #24 GT.

4. 2 SEC Titles, yes, I agree, we are due for another one already according to your every 4-5 years, but it’s not like it has never happened under this group.

5. Never going to happen here or at any other school. I mean try to tell OSU fans that losing their head coach and several players as a result of NCAA scandal will cause their season to be abysmal and you will get hit with a barrage of unrealistic stuff.

6. I too would like to see them upset a few teams again. Some of the previously mentioned wins were upsets but I would like to see it this year since several of the game on this years schedule will see us as the underdog.

Yes, a NC would be nice and no, you didn’t mention it here but in previous posts, you made it seem as NOTHING else mattered.

“Again AL 2 National Champions UGA 0 in that time span”

“After Stallings couldnt find a coach until they got Saban and won a NC”

I would LOVE to get even back to the NC hunt. But other teams won’t just roll over and die for us so it will be a battle. Again, like I have said before, firing CMR mid-season is NOT the answer. So let’s just let it play out and get past the look for a new coach until we see how everything ends. By that time, if a move is warranted, you can bet that McGarity has already been shopping around.

What a crock. Bobo and Richt are a joke. Always a day late and a dollar short. We drove into Carolina territory 3 times early in the game. Twice we failed to gain a first down on 3rd and 2 and 3rd and 3 because those crackpots called a pass play. We came away with 6 points. Field Goals are for Losers. I will always go back to Tubberville’s advise to Richt in Richt’s 1st year…”Richt will learn you have to be able to run the ball in this league”. Hey slydog…how can I compare Mettenberger and Newton? Easy. Both broke the law. You say Cam only engaged in some ’student’ pranks, or mistakes, or whatever…frankly getting caught cheating on academic assignments (several times), stealing a laptop (the same thing that got that QB from Oregon kicked out – then Ole Miss signed him) and an array – I’m talking dozens – of un-paid and un-resolved (unless having ‘em ‘fixed’ counts) traffic-related violations in the year or two he was in Gainesville…if that’s just student-stuff then Dean William Tate tossed a bunch of guys unnecessarily. As for his having been ‘clean’ for the last year or two, we’ll see. The truth will out on his signing at AU one day and Jerry Richardson will have to decide if he wants the next Reggie Bush representing his program – I don’t care how many 400-yard games he has, Richardson’s a hard-nosed guy and I suspect he never would have drafted Newton without getting a promise from him that neither he, his Daddy, or his Uncle, or his Momma, or anybody he knows took money to play at Auburn. If he’s lied to Jerry his a$$ won’t be able to get outta Charlotte fast enough.

Why do so many people feel as if they need to prove they are a fan and that all that disagree with them are not? This seems to describe those fans supporting CMR. Go to Philly, NYC, or just hop across the state line over into Alabama and they likely would be understanding of the sourness of UGA fans. One of my good friends who is from Jersey is as loyal of a fan as one can be. He even adopted the Dawgs as his college team after the military moved him down south (before it is said or asked college ball is not too big up East). The main reason was UGA fans were like those he grew up with. We understood misery and absolute hate wallowing in it. We have the all or nothing approach to our fanaticism.

Is nothing so bad when you’ve cover to ‘and, an’ leave an’ likin’ to shout;
But to stand an’ be still to the Birken’ead drill

An’ they done it, the Jollies — ‘Er Majesty’s Jollies —
Mark Richt and his Loyalists too!
Their work was done when it ‘adn’t begun; they was younger nor me an’ you;
Their choice it was plain between drownin’ in ‘eaps

So they stood an’ was still to the Birken’ead drill, Mark Richt and his Loyalists too!

If UGA goes 9-3 this year, what will that prove? I mean, I know 9 wins is ok, but it will basically mean that UGA lost the 3 games that really matter.

If UGA fans become ok with losing every game that the Vegas folks say they should, then get ready to finish 8-4 or 9-3 every year.

It’s about friggin time. It’s been obvious Crowell is our best RB since Day 1 and there’s no excuse for him not starting or getting more touches. Samuel needs to move back to LB and Boykin/Smith/Thomas can spilt the other 10 or so carries to give Crowell a breather when needed.

RedandBlackDAWG

September 15th, 2011
10:43 am

I think the starting of Crowell was handled very well. They let him ease into the college game, by limiting his carries in game one and gr4adually letting him loose in game 2. Sure it would be nice if he had the impact Lattimore had for Sc last year, but by the end of the year, who was hurtng and had limited playing time for them. Did SC look like a SEC division winner last year at the end? The answer is no. Lattimore started out being their only reliaible weapon and Garcia only looked half servicable because Lattimore gathered most of the attention of the opposing teams defense. As anyone could see, based on Saturdays game, you pressure Garcia and he gets happy feet and an arm, most coaches would disdain. Considering SC’s options at QB, it is sad but he is their only choice. And yes, SC did beat UGA but we have to be a little realistic here. SC’s defense forced UGA into some mistakes and beat them. The offense amounted to 17 points and even though Lattimore got his yards in, he did most of his damage later in the game when the defense wore down. We can not afford to have Crowell have that happen to him. He is going to be a terrific RB and he has shown he has all the tools to be a great one. Let’s not get him beat to death though, and let him become a great one at a proper pace.

GO DAWGS and GATA
