Coastal Carolina coach goes viral on YouTube with ‘dogs vs. kitty-cats’ rant

Most Georgia fans know that the Bulldogs are playing Coastal Carolina this Saturday, but they might not know that the Chanticleers (2-0) are coached by YouTube’s latest Internet sensation.

More than a half-million people — including Georgia coach Mark Richt — have viewed coach David Bennett’s YouTube clip from a press conference in Conway, S.C., earlier this month. In it, the down-home-style coach explains the inherent differences in dogs and cats and why he wants his team and his players to be more like dogs and less like cats.

The hilarious soliloquy was picked up and played on several ESPN shows and has since gone viral online.

I got to spend a few minutes on the phone with Bennett, whose 2-0 Chanticleers visit Athens on Saturday, and asked him what he thought about all the attention he was getting.

“It’s just a true story I shared with the team on a Monday and I shared it at a press conference and it took off like wildfire,” he said with his Deep South drawl. “Must’ve been a slow media day.”

Asked what was the general motivation of his message, Bennett said: “I just told our kids on the field you need to be more like Dogs. Don’t worry how you look. Do you have a special type of cleats on? Do you have the extra sweat bands? Is your hair looking just right? So, moral of the story, we’re going to play some real Dogs this week that I think will finish Top 10 in the country when it’s all said and done.”

Is it his general style to tell such stories to make a point?

“I guess. I told our kids and they laughed about it. They said, ‘Coach, that ain’t nothing special.’ We talk like that around here every day. So, again, it must’ve been a slow day that they wanted to take that thing and put it on PTI and ‘Round the Horn and ESPN. Again, I’m just glad that thing’s about done.”

Has he gotten much feedback about it on campus?

“I haven’t gotten much feedback on our own campus except from our own players. We don’t do much but watch film, go to practice, go eat, go to bed. But you want positive coverage and attention for our university. If they want to take a little cat-and-dog story and turn it into something that the local sportscasters said 97 percent of the people liked, fine.

“People that really love cats didn’t like it. But I ain’t out to disrespect cats. There’s a couple of cats in the world I like. A couple of our friends got cats. But, on the field we need to be more like a dog than a cat. That’s just what we meant by that. But bottom line, we’re always telling stories here all the time. That’s just one of them stories that got out there. I guess it’s good exposure, as long as it isn’t anything negative.”

A little about Bennett:

He is a native of Cheraw, S.C., who has been at Coastal Carolina since it began its football program nine years ago. He was a former graduate assistant under Danny Ford at Clemson who grew up listening to the stories of former Clemson coach Frank Howard. So he gets it honestly.

“When I was a lilttle boy I watched the Bear Bryant, Vince Dooley and Frank Howard shows,” he said. “Couldn’t wait to watch them and see what they had to say. You always took the good that you wanted to use and the bad that you didn’t want to use.

“But the best stories you hear are from preachers, preachers that preached on Sundays through your life. I’ve learned more stories from preachers than anybody else.”

His thoughts on Georgia (0-2):

“I’m sitting here watching film right now as we speak of Georgia and Boise and Georgia and South Carolina,” Bennett said. “They are massive, they are very talented and I predict they’ll finish top 10 in the nation when the season’s done. I’ll tell you what, they’ve got a freshman tailback, Crowell, goodness, gracious, he might be one of the finest I’ve ever seen on film.

“So it will be a great challenge for our team to go down to Athens, Ga., Sanford Stadium, between the hedges. I think they’re mighty darn good.”

So that’s a glimpse of the coach the Bulldogs will be competing against this Saturday. What do you think?

Sounds like Vince Dooley. Realizing the power of his opponent and preparing his team use their strengths to overcome the other teams weaknesses. Boy could we use that type of leadership again.

To all you idiots out there calling for Richt’s head….It finely occurred to me that the real issue with you guys isn’t to do the right thing but you absolutely refuse to admit you are wrong. So to be right the only option is to continue this nonsense about firing one of UGA’s most successful coaches as a kneejerk reaction to recent subpar performance. Key work there being “SUBPAR”…meaning par for UGA is a lot higher than it was when he arrived.

WHY GEORGIA SHOULD BE CONSIDERING A COACHING CHANGE.
1-Georgia is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 and 2011
2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams. (2-10 record)
2- GEORGIA is now 14-14 in his last 28 games
3-GEORGIA is 6-10 in the past 16 SEC games.
4- REMAINING SCHEDULE. Games they will probably lose: 1- Miss St. 2- Tenn 3-Florida 4-Auburn. Games we should win (if we don’t have an off week): 1- Costal Carolina, 2-Miss, 3- Kentucky, 4- New Mexico, 5-Tech, 6-Vandy.
LOOKS LIKE A 50/50 CHANCE OF ANOTHER LOSING SEASON.
5- Its been 30 yrs since our last national championship…. Can Richt get us there? Are we trending in the right direction?

UGA will run away with this game and then CMR, Bradley and Belue will declare all is well again

Then the state of Mississippi will rip UGA a new one after which the latest Coach Dooley will prove that he was paying attention to Dad all those years back and the slide continues.

People have to understand it is the mindset.
This team was not beaten by SC this team found a way to lose.

SPOKESMAN—-If you look through a microscope at CMR’s body of work you would fire him. Hell that would have happened to DOOLEY, BRYANT, BUTTS, BOWDEN, ETC. In fact, name a college football coach that didn’t go through a few down years. The year before UGA went on a tear (1979) UGA was 6-5. Using the “get rid of em logic” someone else would have either screwed up the National Championship Team or won with them and gotten all the credit. Either way it should be noted that when Dooley “WAS” fired as athletic director in 2004 that’s really when the program started going south. Now that McGarity is on-line, Richt is back to coaching and UGA is without a doubt getting much better with every game. In other words the problems that caused the effect of the last few years were the DRUNK PHILANDERING ATHLETIC DIRECTOR who I might add is the one that hired WILLIE MARTINEZ and that cancer is gone.

The evil genius at SC is right. UGA recruits the same talent the AU FLA ALA ect recuit. It is all coaching. Time to upgrade some of the position coaches. Mentally, I think coach Richt has checked out of Athens. He appears to be distracted and would benefit from a change of scene. I think he is a good and great man away from football, but he is not paid 3 mil a year to be a good and great man.

Mark Richt. Gonna be a black cloud hovering for years to come
if folks don’t realize it sooner than later. UGa lost to two Top 12
schools and was within 2 scores of the number 5 team. A 9-3,
or an 8-4 mark are easily attained. Game one and two were both
wars. Folks better wise up. Lots of teams would like to have him.
Now that this is said, it’ll be interesting watching the media trying

Well, since we’re playing 2 high school teams this year (the Chandeliers and the Aggies of N.M. State) we’ll end up no worse than 2-10.

I’m guessing we’ll eek out wins against Vandy and Kentucky, too.

If we can win at Ole Miss, and somehow win against Miss St. – we’ll be Shreveport eligible.

This is where Mark Richt needs to get on a run. The toughest part of his schedule is over. Dawg fans expecting a 2-0 start were delusional to begin with. The team did look better last week. And since our administration refuses to make any change until the end of the season, there is no sense in the ” Fire Mark Richt” chants. If he goes below 8-4 this year he’ll be gone believe me. So all that being said, let me state a few ways this team can be successful.

1. I’ve come to grips with the fact that UGA is not going to have a dominant defense because that is clearly not a priority to Coach Richt. However, there is a difference between in having a bad defense and having a non-existent one. Our defense needs to at LEAST have the ability to tighten up in the last few minutes of a game. Giving up a 15 yard pass for a first down during a 2 min. drill is one thing. Giving up a 40 yard play is another. A team picking up a first down on 2nd or 3rd and short is one thing. Giving up a 60 yard run is another. Our defense gives up WAY too many big plays, the kind that are back breakers in games. Our defense needs to give opponents SOME kind of resistance. 42 points is enough to win most games you play, but if the defense doesn’t stop ANYONE then it doesn’t matter.
2. One thing I’ve noticed about Aaron Murray, is that he does pretty well in the hurry up/shot gun offense. I think part of his problem is he thinks too much. In the hurry up he can make decisions quicker, pick up 7-8 yards per pass, which in turn helps the running game because the down and distance is more manageable. It also helps our O-line because they don’t have to hold their blocks as long. I just think completing those short passes earlier in the game will get him in a rhythm, and when Murray is in a rhythm he’s pretty tough QB.
3. Murray really needs to be more precise in his short passing game. With AJ last year, he didn’t have to be that accurate because you just had to throw the ball in his general vicinity and he’d make the play. But this year, he’s got to make a living on the quick slants, because he hasn’t developed the trust and timing with his receivers yet. Again the hurray up offense should help with this.
4. We really need to run more off tackle plays. Crowell and even Samuel got nice gains when we did that. I also have found that when we have success running the ball early, the O-Line seems to do a better job with pass protection. Not sure why that is, but it is.
5. 2-4 are all contingent on Mike Bobo being able to assess his team’s strength’s and implementing them into the game plan. That is a 50/50 proposition at best. But this offense should be able to outscore most of the teams they play the rest of the way. If we ever have another 10-6 loss like we did to Central Florida, then Bobo has got to be fired immediately. This offense should average 4 TD’s a game at least!

DR. LUKE THOUGHTS

Well I learned alot more about my favorite teams and some that I hate. UGA played better BUT still lost. Some dawg fans and Richt think they can win out. He was happy with the way his team played. I never see Nick Saban or Les Miles happy when they play well but lose. Recent history says they will lose at least 4 more games and settle for another Liberty Bowl and a “dream team” that was actually just a dream…Alabama played lights out aganist Penn St. Hats off to Joe Pa but the crimson tide were too much to handle.Well coached, strong defense, no mistake and no turnover football has Nick Saban eyeing another SEC championship…The “Luck of the Irish” has officially run out. Im not sure which seat is hotter, Richts or Kellys both have alot of talent and are 0-2 to start the season. The Irish lost in a nail bitter in the Big House. Coach Hoke for the wolverines looked like he knew what he was doing all along. Kirk Herbsterit advised from the booth to kick the field goal to go into overtime but thats why he is in the booth calling games. Coach Hoke decided to take a shot in the endzone with 8 seconds left and well the rest is history…Lastly, I had a great weekend spending time with my buddy Coach Lee down at the swamp. Even though UAB did not play well on this particular night it was a enjoyable. I witnessed more mullets and jorts (blue jean shorts) than I care to ever see again. For this reason I will NOT be returning to the swamp and I understand now why Ga plays UF in Jacksonville.

Predictions:

Thursday Night Football 8:00 ET PM

LSU travels to Miss St- Dan Mullen needs this win and needs it bad. After coming off a heartbreaking loss to Auburn he would love nothing more than to get his team back on track in the SEC West. I have to say Im pulling for Miss St but the Mad Hatter Les Miles always finds a way to win..LSU 38 Miss St 35

12:00 PM ET No. 21 Auburn at Clemson- SEC is always picked over lower tier ACC teams. War Eagle.

1:00 PM ET Coastal Carolina at UGA-Coastal Carolinas Coach had some funny commentary after last weeks game about cats and dogs. If you have not seen it check this video out!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EChnZTJicw..You will not regret it..
Please win this one ga…Be more like dogs…Go Dawgs

3:30 PM ET Michigan St at ND- For some reason since I was living near South Bend my hate for ND has grown exponentially so that means I have to follow how many games they lose every season. Remember last year Michigan St beat ND with a fake field goal. Im taking the Spartans..ND should consider moving down to Division II next year.

3:30 PM ET Tennessee at UF- This one is a tough call. Both teams have coaches that have UGA connections. Coach Muschamp played at UGA, coached at Valdosta State University (my alma mater), moved to Auburn to be the defense coordinator then went to Texas to be the DC. Coach Dooley graduated law school from UGA and well you may of heard of his dad, Vince Dooley (Wikipedia him if not)… I think both teams are going to play well but Florida is too much in the 4th. Close game but Fl wins.

4:00 PM ET Tulane at UAB–the Green Wave lost to Tulsa last week 31-3. Ouch…They must play better if they can beat the mighty Blazers at Legion Field. UAB wins..Go Blazers!

07:30 PM ET No 17 Ohio St at Miami Fl–Not sure what to say about this one. Both programs are struggling and both programs are a bunch of cheaters. I feel sorry for Ohio St having to make that long trip to Miami this weekend. Ohio St players will likely make a tatoo parlor stop, lease some cars, and maybe hit up a few strip clubs on Friday night before the game…They will both find a way to cheat this weekend …Hurricane cancels the game and they both lose

08:00 PM ET No 1 OU at No 4 Florida State–This is going to be a great game! Josh and I have decided to make the trek to Tallahassee and Bobby Bowden Field to witness this game first hand. OU looks as good as ever with Coach Stoops trying to lead his players to another National Title game. It’s been 53 weeks since Oklahoma whipped the Seminoles 47-17 on Sept.
11, 2010 in what was just Coach Fisher’s second game as a head coach…But “not so fast my friend”, the Noles will be ready. They have the speed that kills and a great coach..Noles win in a close one after Chief Osceola claims his land back from the Sooners…GO NOLES!!!!!..(if that didnt make since refer below)

Sooners is the name given to settlers in the midwest of the United States who entered the Unassigned Lands in what is now the state of Oklahoma before President Grover Cleveland officially proclaimed them open to settlement on March 2, 1889 with the Indian Appropriations Act of 1889.

If UGA goes 9-3, is that automatically a good thing? I mean, sure, they will have won 9 games…but they will have lost the only 3 meaningful games of the season.

If you accept losses every year to the teams that Vegas declares “should” win, then get used to being 8-4 or 9-3 every year.

Dave Bennett made Catawba a D-II contender and has built the Coastal program from the beach up. He’s a phenomenal motivator and doesn’t do it diving off the high dive. I personally hopes he kicks Mark Richt’s hypocritical ass all the way back down to Miami where he played. You don’t recruit boys like UGA does and live like a saint yourself. Don’t be fooled by the “gosh golly” show Richt puts on.

I agree that there were some aspects of the YouTube video that subtly hinted that this guy is interested in Mark Richt’s job. I mean, what SEC coach would tell his team “Be a gator!” before traveling to the Swamp? This dude has a 121-52 record (69.94%) after 16 seasons as a college head coach. He is in his ninth season at Costal Carolina, where he has gone 58-35 (62.36%). He is definitely no slouch as a coach. I, for one, would like to see injected into UGA football the kind of fire in the belly he seems to have.

Coach Richt is definitely a fine man and excellent role model for his players. However, ever since he started that “I’m going to be the team CEO” crap years ago, the team has really never been the same. He has had top level talent on his teams year after year, but his players consistently underperform. His idea of inspiring the players is to have them wear black-out uniforms and other weird getups. Gimmicks don’t win ballgames. Conditioning, preparation, confidence, intensity and execution do. Frankly, I do not see those elements coming together under Richt. Regretably, I agree that it is time for him to make a fresh start elsewhere.

I like what I saw in Dave Bennett. At the two schools where he has had the head coaching position, he has almost certainly had to do more with less. I wonder what he could do with the resources and players Richt has had. At the very least, he would be very entertaining to watch on Saturday and Sunday.
