Coastal Carolina coach goes viral on YouTube with ‘dogs vs. kitty-cats’ rant

Most Georgia fans know that the Bulldogs are playing Coastal Carolina this Saturday, but they might not know that the Chanticleers (2-0) are coached by YouTube’s latest Internet sensation.

More than a half-million people — including Georgia coach Mark Richt — have viewed coach David Bennett’s YouTube clip from a press conference in Conway, S.C., earlier this month. In it, the down-home-style coach explains the inherent differences in dogs and cats and why he wants his team and his players to be more like dogs and less like cats.

The hilarious soliloquy was picked up and played on several ESPN shows and has since gone viral online.

I got to spend a few minutes on the phone with Bennett, whose 2-0 Chanticleers visit Athens on Saturday, and asked him what he thought about all the attention he was getting.

“It’s just a true story I shared with the team on a Monday and I shared it at a press conference and it took off like wildfire,” he said with his Deep South drawl. “Must’ve been a slow media day.”

Asked what was the general motivation of his message, Bennett said: “I just told our kids on the field you need to be more like Dogs. Don’t worry how you look. Do you have a special type of cleats on? Do you have the extra sweat bands? Is your hair looking just right? So, moral of the story, we’re going to play some real Dogs this week that I think will finish Top 10 in the country when it’s all said and done.”

Is it his general style to tell such stories to make a point?

“I guess. I told our kids and they laughed about it. They said, ‘Coach, that ain’t nothing special.’ We talk like that around here every day. So, again, it must’ve been a slow day that they wanted to take that thing and put it on PTI and ‘Round the Horn and ESPN. Again, I’m just glad that thing’s about done.”

Has he gotten much feedback about it on campus?

“I haven’t gotten much feedback on our own campus except from our own players. We don’t do much but watch film, go to practice, go eat, go to bed. But you want positive coverage and attention for our university. If they want to take a little cat-and-dog story and turn it into something that the local sportscasters said 97 percent of the people liked, fine.

“People that really love cats didn’t like it. But I ain’t out to disrespect cats. There’s a couple of cats in the world I like. A couple of our friends got cats. But, on the field we need to be more like a dog than a cat. That’s just what we meant by that. But bottom line, we’re always telling stories here all the time. That’s just one of them stories that got out there. I guess it’s good exposure, as long as it isn’t anything negative.”

A little about Bennett:

He is a native of Cheraw, S.C., who has been at Coastal Carolina since it began its football program nine years ago. He was a former graduate assistant under Danny Ford at Clemson who grew up listening to the stories of former Clemson coach Frank Howard. So he gets it honestly.

“When I was a lilttle boy I watched the Bear Bryant, Vince Dooley and Frank Howard shows,” he said. “Couldn’t wait to watch them and see what they had to say. You always took the good that you wanted to use and the bad that you didn’t want to use.

“But the best stories you hear are from preachers, preachers that preached on Sundays through your life. I’ve learned more stories from preachers than anybody else.”

His thoughts on Georgia (0-2):

“I’m sitting here watching film right now as we speak of Georgia and Boise and Georgia and South Carolina,” Bennett said. “They are massive, they are very talented and I predict they’ll finish top 10 in the nation when the season’s done. I’ll tell you what, they’ve got a freshman tailback, Crowell, goodness, gracious, he might be one of the finest I’ve ever seen on film.

“So it will be a great challenge for our team to go down to Athens, Ga., Sanford Stadium, between the hedges. I think they’re mighty darn good.”

So that’s a glimpse of the coach the Bulldogs will be competing against this Saturday. What do you think?

Coastal Carolina has some massive players, too; a couple of 330 lb. linemen among several well over 300. The DL needs to keep them off the inside linebackers’ legs.

Yeah Delbert they do have big players but unlike us they aren’t as quick or agile. You can be big as you wanna be, but in football you have to have certain skills especially when carrying over 300 lbs to be effective. I don’t think Coastal Carolina will be able to keep up with us at all. We obviously win but I’m going to say we win 51-10.

I’m really worried about our inside LB situation. We don’t have Ogletree and now we won’t have Robinson until we travel to Tennessee. I think the loss of Robinson is much bigger than losing Ogletree. Sure Ogletree is a great player, but Robinson is the leader of our defense; the one that calls the plays; the one that makes sure everyone is where they are supposed to be. Not having him will hurt us big time. Thank God our next two games are against teams we should beat in Coastal Carolina and Ole Miss. By the time Miss. State comes to Athens, our starters at ILB now will have had time to get used to playing.

Athens Dawg – “Yeah Delbert they do have big players but unlike us they aren’t as quick or agile.”

That’s my point. One of those guys may fall on somebody and roll up on their legs. Hopefully, not one of the LBs.

Why Georgia should be thinking about a coaching change…..
1-Georgia is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 and 2011 and has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams.
2- richt is now 14-14 in his last 28 games
3- Lets look at the remaining schedule. Games they will probably lose: 1- Miss St. 2- Tenn 3-Florida 4-Auburn. Games we should win (if we don’t have an off week): 1- Costal Carolina, 2-Miss, 3- Kentucky, 4- New Mexico, 5-Tech, 6-Vandy. LOOKS LIKE A 50/50 CHANCE OF ANOTHER LOSING SEASON.

That clip doesn’t make any sense. Cats are smarter, quicker and more agile. Of course they are not as docile and easily coached as dogs so from his point of view I guess I can see why he would want more dogs. Meeeoooooowwwwwww!!!

As a UGA fan growing up and still today and a Coastal Carolina grad, Coach Bennett has done a HELL of a job for only being a 9 year program….he has hlep put 6 or 7 players into the NFL! Bennett is defiently on the rise as a Coach, and man he is a class act….nicest person ever but when it comes to football he will call a player out or get in there face unlike Richt. CCU will put up some points no doubt Hilary has been playing good lately (used to be SC 3 string QB then transfered last year). But CCU got some athletes can’t wait to see the Chants play against my childhood team!! GO CHANTS!

That’s pretty cool.I wonder if he might be our next coach.I hope we don’t lose to carolina,if we do Richt needs to go after the game. The other blog about the fans that guy must be on crack. The coaches recruit, and get the guys ready for games not the fans.I guess we don’t have road games either then, because there’s more noise for the other team.To me the story is a way to sell more tickets, and if fans don’t want to go support Richt then that’s fine with me.It dosen’t mean your not a fan,it means you care about UGA and you want a change in the right direction.Maybe if people didn’t show up ,and there weren’t sell outs then our AD would doing something.Money talks.

A serious question for you dawg fans – who will be your next coach, IF, and I said IF, Richt gets the heave-ho? I think Derek Dooley, Muschamp, Mullen, and obviously Miles, Chizak, and Saban are out of reach – so who you gonna call? Petrino? One of the Stoops boys? Jimbo Fisher?

Like what the coach told his players about what I call the “look at me factor”….desire to get on TV and get attention. Their antics after a mediocre play and swan dives over the goal line are irrating. Yes, I known they are just kids having a good time and they are playing on the “Play Ground” and not a football field. Save it for the sidelines or locker room.

Looks like from this interview he’s trying to take Richt’s job. By saying that UGA should be a Top 10 team means that if they’re not by the end of this season, he’s telling the athletic dept. “this is what I can do”, especially if Coastal Carolina holds their own at Sanford. Here’s another question, why so many chicken mascots in South Carolina???

TDOG CCU used to be apart of College of Charleston way back in the day then became apart of USC call USC Coastal…just like a USC Aiken, etc. But then branched off becoming a Chanticleer(french rooster) they just thought it would be respect even though we broke away from USC that we find something different but remain close. CCU playing big names every year (last year West Virginia, year before Clemson, year before Penn State) so CCU knows what it is like to be on the big stage. Coastal will come out playing, because they have nothing to lose! For CCU you will see two QB’s one running in Jamie Childers and other in Aramis Hilary (balenced qb). GO CHANTS, rocking that TEAL on saturday!

Like in the above post Coastal Caroilina used to be apart of USC then broke away from the university becoming there own. Even though they made a complete split from USC they wanted to remember where they came from and have respect for USC therefore keeping the closely related mascot aka the Chanticleer. Chanticleer is a fierce, witty, and proud rooster who dominates the barnyard, or a witty and crafty rooster who uses his smarts agaisnt his enemy to win the fight). Bennett is a very impressive coach….he has built CCU ground up and done a hell of a job for only being a 9 year old program, wining conference championships….putting 6 players into the NFL. You couldnt ask much more out of the guy except to continue to grow which he has, and has the WHOLE backing of the AD and administration! proud to be a CHANT! Then what? Rebuild for a couple years…or more…adjust to a new offensive scheme…good idea. CMR can turn it around before some new guy. Nobody will come in and make an immediate change in the number of wins and losses (maybe SABAN could). TN is a good example of what will/could happen. Upgrade the support staff….yes, good idea. Everybody, look up CVD’s record and compare to CMR’s, factor out HW and compare again. UGA showed much improvement from wk 1. They put up a lot of offense. SC had some “lucky” breaks,” which put them over the top. The season is not over…shut your pie holes until saturday…
