UGA linebacker Robinson out ‘at least’ two weeks, plus other updates

Another week, another injury to a key Georgia linebacker.

Christian Robinson will miss “at least a couple” of games with a foot injury sustained in Saturday’s loss to South Carolina, UGA coach Mark Richt said Sunday.

The injury, coming one week after Alec Ogletree suffered a broken foot in the season opener, leaves Georgia (0-2, 0-1 SEC) without both of its starting inside linebackers.

Compounding the problem, inside linebacker was probably the thinnest position area on Georgia’s defense and the one at which the team was least equipped to withstand injuries.

“We’ve definitely got a challenge at the linebacker position right now,” Richt said.

Ogletree, who underwent surgery last week, is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks. Richt did not have medical details on Robinson’s injury — he suggested it might involve a hairline fracture — but said it is not as severe as Ogletree’s.

The first names Richt mentioned as candidates to fill in for Robinson in the next two games — Saturday at home against Coastal Carolina and Sept. 24 at Ole Miss — are from the same trio that competed last week for Ogletree’s spot: junior Michael Gilliard, freshman Amarlo Herrera and senior walk-on Jeremy Sulek. Herrera started against South Carolina, but all three played.

Richt suggested that freshman Ramik Wilson or perhaps Chase Vasser might shift from outside linebacker to get some work at the depleted inside position. Moving Richard Samuel back from tailback to linebacker, or moving Jarvis Jones from outside linebacker to inside, are not wise options at this point, Richt said.

“You might weaken two spots if you take Jarvis away from what he’s doing and put him inside,” Richt said.

Robinson’s position is the on-field leader of Georgia’s defense, and “somebody is going to have to really get in there and be able to handle a lot of the communication issues,” Richt said.

Robinson, a junior, had a team-leading eight tackles Saturday before being injured late in the game. He was unable to play on the Bulldogs’ final defensive series. He was in the locker room afterward with a bag of ice on his left foot.

Among other topics Richt discussed Sunday:

  • Although left guard Kenarious Gates is expected to play this week after missing the South Carolina game with an injured ankle, he “is going to have to compete to get back in the starting lineup,” Richt said. That’s because of a strong performance by Dallas Lee in his first collegiate start Saturday. Right guard Chris Burnette also played well against the Gamecocks after he “quite frankly didn’t play all that well in the first game,” Richt said.
  • After reviewing film of Isaiah Crowell’s costly third-quarter fumble, which led to a South Carolina touchdown, Richt indicated the freshman tailback might have taken too much responsibility when he said after the game the botched handoff was entirely his fault. Quarterback Aaron Murray was “hobbling” from a hit on the preceding play and “didn’t bring the ball as deep as he normally would,” Richt said. “Isaiah should have been more patient, but certainly the timing in my opinion was different because of Murray hobbling back there instead of really sprinting.”
  • Although tight end Orson Charles did not catch a pass Saturday, he “had his very best game as a blocker,” according to Richt. “Run blocking, pass protecting –- I don’t think I’ve seen him play with that kind of intensity.”
  • Richt liked what he saw from the wide receivers. “You see Malcolm [Mitchell] coming on and Michael Bennett having a big day and making some plays. I think we have at least six guys who can make plays out there. I’m encouraged, definitely.”

Much better effort, there were a lot of positives coming from Saturday. The most promising was a much more diverse, improved offensive game plan. The worst was the fake punt. We continue to get burned on those types of plays on a pretty consistent basis. Let’s hope we continue seeing improvement, our wounded heal quickly, and we clean up the mistakes leading to turnovers.

The fact that the coaches keep mentioning all of the alignment calls that Robinson has to make during each play, is probably the leading reason why the defense can’t stop anybody. This Grantham guy seems to be trying to be so complex (ala NFL) and seems only to be confusing himself and his own players. Certainly didn’t confuse Boise or S.C. or anybody we played last year for that matter. Just let em line up and go get the ball. Damn! Pay these coaches all this money and they start trying to prove they are smarter than Lombardi.

that smell in your nose is CMR’s fanny on fire. He just better hope is starters have their gamefaces on this weekend and don’t come out flat again. This team needs every stupid nickel and dime win it can get, even if they are playing a high school team on steroids. Coach, call a spade a spade, run these kids in practice this week til their tongues hang out and their knuckles are dragging. Show ‘em a little bit of what hell looks like in practice. Trust me, you won’t have to get them up for game day.

“Take away the Turnovers and what do you have”

Hey, great idea…even better lets take away the points that the other team scores and just imagine how great UGA could be??

Three of the “mistakes” when the UGA beaners are soothing their hurt pride were actually solid plays by SC.

The faked punt was a perfectly executed play and an incredible run by a 270 lb DT.

The pick 6 was an excellent bait and move play on Murray and the last was that Clowney kid tossing Murray around like ragdoll.

Yet UGA fans want to pretend like UGA players just walked out on the field and placed the ball neatly on the field for SC players to pick up.

Frustrated, frustrated, frustrated!!!! Here I am approaching 73, and have been a Dawg fan 64 of those years….Love Mark Richt as a man, father, and especially as a good Christian…..but the man doesn’t have the balls to coach in this day and time….He is more interested in kicking field goals than giving the “rock” to his #1 recruit when it’s early in the game with 4th and 1 or 2 to go, and letting him get that first down….did it in the Liberty Bowl, and continues to do it every game…..apparently no confidence in his offense….or OC……Hope I live long enough to see us back on top!!!!

Just a little education for those that don’t know, but in a 3-4 defense the LB’s are actually supposed to be making most of the plays. How can you be running a 3-4 as a coach and talking about being thin at LB. These guys (coaches) are lost. Fire Grantham, put Washington back on the ground and let your DL start trying to make plays rather than tying up blockers, which is the philosophy of the 3-4 defense. I’m telling ya’ll Grantham is a fraud, do a little research into his background. Dude was barely the LB coach for Dallas, not the DC.

Sounds like Mark Richt is tiring of Murray’s turnovers, finally. I remember the game against Florida, Murray just kept making mental mistakes. Didi it again in the Bowl game after several weeks of film study on UCF. And now, after 8 months of film study, committed 3 to’s against a div rival.

I like LSU’s approach to QB’s. Just manage the game. Rely on defense, run game, and special teams. It’s a formula we can use to win.

I think Richt has to make the change at QB. Murray’s to’s and lack of poise, is just undoing the team.

If we had hammered a cupcake in game 1 and then just lost like we did yesterday, noone would be hitting the panic button, or calling for anyones dismissal. This team is much better than last years team.

Some observations:

I hope Isaiah does not develop fumbleitis.
Thank God we play CC this week.
Thank God we play Ole Miss after that.
Why the heck can’t Brandon hang onto the dang ball on punt/kickoff return?

I want to see this team be successful, for the benefit of Brandon Boykin. Can that kid play, or what?

Murray’s size does come into play when he gets hit (see yesterday’s game and AU last year).

These are 3 statements by Mark Richt post-game, which are indications of a problem with the head coach :

(1) “We had a slip screen called and their five technique [tackle] went inside and I don’t think Cordy [Glenn] got a hand on him. If you’re gonna get sacked, you get sacked. But Murray had to hold onto the ball there.”

ITEM : Jadeveon Clowney split 2 OL from his right side, picked up little Aaron Murray and slammed him the turf like a RAG DOLL, and then followed Melvin Ingram in for his 2nd touchdown on the day, who is a defensive lineman also. Mark Richt makes it sound as if Aaron Murray cannot check down at the line of scrimmage, saying he had a slip screen called. And, again, it is not ok for anyone to blame the loss on a player but here the coach is blaming 2 different players for the play that cost us a 2 score lead we gave up on this play at the end of the game when the other fans left.

(2) “I guess I wanted to show people that I could get mad. I threw them pretty far, too. If I had a visor on I would have slammed it down.”

ITEM : Steve Spurrier slams down his visor because he IS mad, not because he wants to show everyone that he could get mad. Mark Richt did this on the whiffed tackle by Brandon Boykin, who last week, along with Aaron Murray, tweeted pre-game on their public Twitter account about the football game, and Aaron Murray’s tweet still sits on his Twitter Account for all to see.

Not a bad game; we deserved to win. I hope left tackle (puss) and Murray (dumb) have apologized to the team for losing the game (sorry, boys; I assume you can man up to your mistakes — I’ll call you ‘men’ when I know that has occured). No excuses; those two sucked and cost us this game. I do believe they will redeem themselves over the next several weeks, though. 42 points and 20-something first downs against an Ellis Johnson defense does not support the hypothesis that UGA’s offense was the problem in the loss to South Carolina. Let’s call a spade a spade: the game plan showed more variation and innovativeness than I’ve see for some time. As Spurrier noted “Georgia outplayed us” and some times the team that plays more poorly wins anyway! Yes, UGA made a few critical plays and suffered one bad call that was critical (Rambo’s offsides call), but what decided the game was the effectiveness (partially luck?) of SC in converting UGA’s mistakes into points. From my perspective (and I’ve watched the telecast twice) UGA did indeed outplay SC; however, it is what it is–a loss. BUT NO NEED TO RISE UP IN ARMS IN ANGER TOWARDS THE COACHES AND THE PROGRAM. I, for one, am encouraged and even with the recent injuries at ILB look for the dogs to win against Costal Carolina and Ole Miss. If we play like we did against SC, we’ll beat Mississippi State too. Let’s hope the Bulldog Nation relaxes until gameday and then yells up a storm in support of our players.

Hey Huey, here’s the news:

Georgia will lose to Tennessee, Florida, and GT this year. Bank on it.

Richt is a dead man walking. Actually, he’s a very rich dead man walking.

UGA’s recruiting will be better off firing him now and getting and interim coach.

UGA is the second most profitable football program in the NCAA, only behind Texas. We need to lay out the cash to buy the very best proven head coach in the country. That alone will send recruiting through the roof. Current Dawgs will also stay put.

Until Richt is gone, we are doing a disservice to the players.

“UGA’s recruiting class for 2012 is ranking 31st and that just won’t cut it”

Of course it will! A ranking in recruiting of 31st is pretty damn high. Boise State is currently 40th with their 2012 recruiting class.

And for the record here are the Boise rankings for the current 2011 team:
(per Scout.com)
2011…67th in nation
2010…97th in nation
2009…60th in nation
2008…64th in nation
2007…57th in nation

As long as you are ranked about where they are, you should have a great team. Wouldn’t you think?

I totally agree that Murray lost the game for us and has not proven to be much of a leader, yet. Because his leadership is definitely in question I think even though Murray should play the most, LeMay should get a quarter now and then to see what he can do.
CMR has put his future in the hands of Bobo and now Murray without even considering that those two are the main problem. I hate that degree of stubbornness. I may turn out to be wrong but it not to even be considered as the problem, is the problem.

“we deserved to win.”

NO UGA didn’t deserve to win. Kevin Butler had it right. You have to take every play in the game into account not pick and choose the plays on which UGA performed better at and then say we should have one.

The team who “deserved” to win was the one who executed a fake punt for a 70yd TD, baited Aaron Murray into a pick 6 and then had a freshmen DT blow up a play late in the 4Q for the winning margin.

The result in a game is the result of every play of the game.

Here’s a tip from a fan of a team that actually runs the ball…

YOU CAN’T MOVE SAMUEL TO LB AND RELY SOLELY ON CROWELL BECAUSE CROWELL CAN’T HANDLE THAT!!!!

I know UGA fans like to think because of a couple of nice runs that he is the next Lattimore, but here’s a hint…he’s not. Lattimore proved that again on Saturday. When Crowell was tapping his helmet to get off the field, Lattimore was too busy getting the yards the hard way and amassed appox. a buck fifty.

Crowell is considerably smaller than Lattimore. Crowell needs Samuel to catch breaks, otherwise, UGA is really screwed. I don’t care how good Crowell is at catching a screen pass.
