South Carolina sure feels like a must-win game for Bulldogs

ATHENS — I’m here at Sanford Stadium on an absolutely gorgeous day in Athens. Right now it’s 81 degrees and there literally is not a cloud in the sky. Campus was already packed with tail-gaters four hours before today’s 4:30 p.m. kickoff between Georgia and No. 12 South Carolina.

My game advance previewing today’s game was not posted in the blog, so HERE’S A LINK TO IT in case you missed it.

Obviously the theme of the week has been whether or not this is a “must-win game” for Georgia coach Mark Richt. I don’t think anybody in the world believes he’d be fired next week if the Bulldogs lose today. At the very least there will be 10 more games in which they could turn things around. But statements such as the one UGA Athletic Association board member Tommy Lawhorne offered unsolicited at yesterday’s quarterly meeting underscore that this season quite clearly is a referendum for Richt.

Said Lawhorne: “There are many of us who are really concerned about the status of the football program,” said Tommy Lawhorne, a football letterman (1965-67) and defensive captain. “Yet we have confidence in [athletic director] Greg McGarity to get us to where we want to be.”

“I’ll echo that,” added Bob Bishop, a longtime executive board member from Athens.

In case you missed Tim Tucker’s coverage of yesterday’s board meeting, here’s what McGarity and Pres. Michael Adams had to say regarding the feedback they’re getting from fans on the football program:

  • Adams: “You know what my life is like. I get multiple opinions on every side of every issue.”
  • McGarity: “You get a lot of comments both ways. It runs the gamut on good, bad, we’re-with-you, we’re-pulling-out. I think it’s the normal emotions that people have.”

So that’s the backdrop for today’s game. Regardless of the ramifications, it should be a perfect day for football. Let’s enjoy it.

It’s not close to a must win game. We play 8 unranked teams, we’ll win 7 or 8 of those. Win the Bowl game, we finish 8-5, 33% more wins than 2010. Beat either MSU/UF/SC and we finish 9-4, 50% more wins than 2010.

The Dogs might take this one, I’d say 86% chance based on Phil Steele’s 86% accuracy in 2010.

Steele’s picking UGA. Steele’s 67-11 in 2011.

McGarity messed up by replacing a W against unranked Louisville with an L aginast 4th ranked Boise State. So that loss is 100% on Greg McGarity.

Lawhorne & Bishop need to wise up, Richt ain’t the issue here, Richt’s won 96 games in 10 years. Richt’s only had 1 losing season in 25 years.

Yet Richt goes 6-7, just happens to have his worst season in 25 years, under McGarity’s leadership? I think AD is the problem, just poor leadership. If Richt has a 6-7 year, my bet is McGarity might have 2 on the board that want to keep him, and they’ll flip when the others say AD must go.

Richt’s won more games % than Nick Saban.

The question of if this is a “must win” should be followed by a resounding “he!! yes”. 8-4 is not the accepted outcome of a season. Hopefully, we will not run 78% of our plays out of the shotgun with very quick, ineffective passes/runs.

Or since Bobo said earlier he was going to stay with the no huddle, nah, we are going to gas our defense again. And continue to not hear the word “special” in our special teams by not hiring a coach or taking it seriously. Which is really bad cause that is the deepest talent pool we have.

Shotgun draw, here I come!!!

McGarity had our boys working out of trailers last year. They were out of shape and lost all 7 game sin the 4th quarter. This year, McGarity scheduled Boise instead of LVille, and Ogletree gets injured which might cost us the SC game. McGarity also lost his negotiation to move UF/UGA games to state of Georgia or at least rotate them.

I think it’s more about HOW we play than the final score. I’m tired of seeing the Dawgs look weak against the better teams on our schedule. The Boise game looked like a repeat of the frustrating games of the past 2 years — inconsistent offense, a tired defense that can not make big plays, and dull, predictable play-calling from Coach Bobo (with a lack of in-game adjustments).

If we play hard but come up a bit short, that’s OK. We obviously have some weaknesses that one week might not correct. If we falter, stumble and barf AGAIN on the gloriously green lawn of Sanford Stadium, that is unacceptable. GO DAWGS!!!

Sounds like it was a test from McGarity and Richt couldn’t pass it.

Here is a modest proposal: enjoy your friends and family and the game and cheer for the Dawgs, regardless of the circumstances and outcome. Support the coaching staff and let them do their best, both on the field and in recruiting tomorrow’s Dawgs. Be thankful your happiness in life isn’t dependent on the outcome of a football game, but having shredded chicken for supper would be delightful! Take stock at the end of this year and assess whether changes need to be made, then voice your opinion in an appropriate manner. Show some class, and be a supportive fan, and a good sport to the opposing team. Be thankful for the awful things that didn’t happen to you or your loved ones this week! Go Dawgs!

Gosh the two are so stupid as Coaches. They allow time to run off the clock nullifying chances to have a decent chance to get the ball back and try to score. Much better effort, but still too many mental breakdowns at crucial points in the game. That last fumble by Murray and TD by Ingram belongs on # 71 who didn’t even touch Clowney on that little slip screen. By the way # 83 should be on the bench, I can’t even count the # of plays he took himself out of plays. Still just too many mental mistakes, maybe as the season goes along they will get better I certainly hope so. The bright spot is that Crowell, Michael Bennet, Malcolm Mitchell, Boykin, Rambo had really good games overall.

The Richard Samuel experiment should be over. Start Crowell and be done with the RB insanity. Next start Mitchell, it’s patently clear he’s our most talented WR. Next, bench Cornelius Washington and put Chase Vasser in his place. Then move Jarvis Jones to the middle and put Ray Drew in his place.

Richt is going to spend many years in his retirement trying to figure how UGA couldn’t stop teams on 3rd down. The next thing he’s going to try and figure out is why he could never find a great offensive line coach. After spends six or seven years chewing on that he can move on to his recruiting strategy. One day he’ll eat some corn on the cob and say, “You know I should of recruited a few more guys with an I.Q. over room temperature.”

Look how far we have fallen when our fans are taking a moral victory from a loss at home to a program that has won ten games only twice in their history. It’s loser mentality. Richt has trained our fan base well…win ten games and get to the Outback Bowl once in a while and our fans are happy. It’s just so sad.

ASU fan, Georgia football has been good to you? I think not. I wish you guys were on our schedule at least that would be one win we would get this year. Remember #24? I think he’s still running.

I don’t see how this team rebounding after an 0-2 start, no matter how positive some fans try to make it.

Hairy – we really shouldn’t pull up the past or I might pull up 6 games last year including one from a Brand X school in Central Florida – ASU currently sits at 2 and 0 having beaten # 21 Missouri – UGA however sits at 0 and 2 with bloody feet that have been self inflicted.

Man I sure hope the Falcons dont start out 0-2? They play da Chicago Bears who played in the NFC Championship last season and then #7 and the Eagles roll into town who have owned the Falcons by winning 8 of the last 9!! Whew…..

Mark Richt is a good coach and a great recruiter but I think it is evident he does not get TEAM players!!! It takes a TEAM to WIN!!! I think someone said it best when they said Boise State gets 2 and 3 star recruits and they sit out a year then when they get their chance to play they are equal to 4 and 5 star recruits.

Harry – Me thinks you didn’t kick ass at leat when I remember Athens 2009 it took a last minute field goal to beat us – in a driving rain storm – ASU held their own – UGA however seems he77 bent on handling other things except the game ball.

“We need everybody to support us,” Richt said. “We need everybody to just watch and see what happens, because things will turn around. The future is still very bright, I know that.”
