Read all about it: South Carolina 45, Georgia 42

A roundup of the AJC’s extensive coverage of Georgia’s 45-42 loss to South Carolina:

Chip Towers’ game story, which notes the Bulldogs are 0-2 for the first time in 15 years:

. . . Georgia lost to South Carolina 45-42 in a roller-coaster of a game that featured seven lead changes and big plays galore. More often than not it was the 12th-ranked Gamecocks who were executing the spectacular, usually at precisely the right moment.

With the victory, the Gamecocks (2-0, 1-0 SEC) get a leg up in the SEC East. The Bulldogs fall to 0-2 for the first time since 1996.

The Bulldogs’ more inspired play — they were lackluster in a 35-21 loss to Boise State in the opener — is unlikely to get the critics off the back of coach Mark Richt.

Mark Bradley’s column, which notes how much things have changed for the Bulldogs since 70-X-Takeoff:

It was there for Georgia, the second-biggest game of Mark Richt’s stewardship, same as the biggest game this coach has worked had been there that cold day at Auburn nine years ago. His Bulldogs needed one drive to win. On Nov. 16, 2002, the prize had been Georgia’s first SEC East title. On this warm and frenzied Saturday, the prize was ….

A sliver of job security? Yes. A hushing, even if only a temporary one, of a roiled Bulldog Nation? Sure. A leg up on another SEC East title? Absolutely.

One drive to win. At Auburn, it had come down to fourth-and-14, to 70-X-Takeoff, to David Greene throwing and Michael Johnson leaping over Horace Willis. That was the victory that made us believe Richt’s Bulldogs could win any game, degree of difficulty be hanged.

But that was then, and this, sorry to say, is now. And now we can say of the same coach — the same but different — that his team can manage to lose almost any game, the excellence of its effort notwithstanding.

Tim Tucker’s story on Isaiah Crowell’s Sanford Stadium debut:

. . . On his first play between the hedges, the celebrated freshman tailback ran for 15 yards. On his second, he ran for 28 yards, breaking two tackles in the process and substantially raising the decibel level in the stadium.

So that’s what the recruiting analysts were talking about when they ranked Crowell the nation’s No. 1 tailback prospect in the 2011 signing class.

It was the start of an ultra-eventful Sanford Stadium debut for Crowell, who in Georgia’s 45-42 loss to South Carolina on Saturday had 158 yards offense (118 rushing and 40 receiving), his first and second collegiate touchdowns (one rushing and one receiving) and his first collegiate fumble (costly).

“I loved it,” Crowell said of playing between the hedges for the first time. “It was a good experience.”

Tucker’s story on four plays that lost the game for Georgia (and what Aaron Murray had to say about them):

Aaron Murray threw four touchdown passes, but those were not the four plays on his mind in the aftermath of Georgia’s 45-42 loss to South Carolina on Saturday.

“We pretty much gave them 28 points on a fake punt, a fumble, a pick and another fumble,” Murray said. “Those four plays really killed us.”

Towers’ notebook, including items on Georgia’s late-game onside kick strategy, Amarlo Herrera’s start at inside linebacker and this quote from Richt about throwing his head phones and play cards at one point during the game:

“I guess I just wanted to show people I could get mad. I threw them pretty far, too.”

A compilation of post-game reaction, including this from South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier:

“I’ve never won a game like this that I can remember. Georgia outplayed us. Give them credit, they outplayed us, but somehow or another we won the game. Sometimes it happens like that. Somebody was looking out for us tonight.”

And Brant Sanderlin’s photo gallery, including this postgame meeting between Richt and Spurrier:

It seems to me that South Carolina has some real problems with their defense. I still don’t understand how Walsh missed that chip shot field goal. After seeing South Carolina luck out two weeks in a row I am voting them down from #12 to #18. Boise is my pick for one of the BCS championship teams. The other being LSU.

This one falls squarely on Murray, no doubt about it. He should know by now to 1) get rid of the ball and not hang out back there like he plays in the ACC, 2) tuck the darn ball and fall down on such a critical play when a 6′6″ giant is running downhill at you and 3) don’t try to do too much….. and always know where Boykin is at on the field if you are going to play him on O (could have had a TD or a least 15-20 yds when he failed to get it over to him…he instead throws it down field for an incomplete pass and only needed 3 yds). The coaches put the players in position to win and a few players made bone head mistakes. This team played hard and made major improvements….and I will say that Bobo and CMR also made improvements to the play calling (not perfect but better). And the D was awesome!

That was a great game, but much too close. I was hoping that the dawgs would lose by at least three touchdowns, but it didn’t happen. The main positive point is that the rude dawg fans have been put in their place yet again, and will assume a condition which should last at least until next June. Usually it takes a good two games to bring 99% of them to reality. Next week the dawgs take on a more appropriate foe in undefeated Coastal Carolina. It will be a “TUFF” game, but I think that Richt will find a way to win and record the first solid bulldog victory for 2011. Good Luck Coach Richt.

It was a real telling image on national television watching the Georgia fans flee the stands early. A true example of poor sportsmanship and lack of respect for your own boys. Why come to the game? Just sit at your tailgate until you know a game is won and then come in to the stadium. Oh… then you would have missed the first two games this year.

I’m so sick of hearing our fans complain about every little thing. I’m proud of our dawgs. They played their hearts out. They made some mental errors yes, but they left everything they had on that field. Don’t ya’ll think you complaining so much is not exactly helping the players? They’ve all been saying how they won’t get on twitter because so called “UGA fans’ are on there attacking them!! THESE ARE KIDS!!!! I think this season will be a great one, I’m proud of us. We proved to be a lot better than the country gave us credit. We lost to the SEC east champion by a very small margin. And substantionally improved. GO DAWGS!!! GATA!!!!

Dawgster….disagree. I have replayed the play several times. Walsh just plain missed it. Snap was perfect…Hold has excellent. I have noticed several misses in practices….almost all miss left (just like Boise). He had an up and down Frosh yr, and nice soph and jr yrs. However he is 2 for 4 to start this yr. Both misses badly to left. No one needs to defend that the Boise miss was from 54 yds…it was left as soon as it left his foot and would have missed at XP range. As additional info, watch his XP’s this yr…he has had several slicing left. Thought he missed 2 that barely stayed in. They would have been missed FG attempts from 25+ yds
I am not down on him, but we need to see that he is simply not kicking like he has. Not timing, not the hold. He is just leaving the ball left. Hurt us last night. Unless he understands it is his mechanics, and fixes, I think it might hurt us again.

Richt may or may not be a problem for the program time will tell on that. But I can say as a casual observer that my bothers as well as many other UGA fans I know, seem to have a common thread of unrealistic expectations when a new year begins. Every September I hear the rumblings of what UGA has to do to get to the SEC CG. In their opinion to win the SEC is to without fail go to the NC game all they have to do is beat Fla, South Carolina, Tennessee and Auburn. Now I’m not sure how long it’s been since they have actually accomplished that in the same year but, suffice as to say, it’s been a long time. Too long in fact to consider it so obtainable that it comes up EVERY year. One game at a time, that’s what Georgia fans should watch and pay attention to and then maybe you’ll be less disappointed. It was a great game. Exciting, suspenseful and will be talked about for years in both Georgia and South Carolina. Those are the kind of games that make the SEC as great as it is.

There were a lot of things to be encouraged by. The mistakes totally changed the game to a loss from what could have been a solid win. Georgia will be an impressive team by the end of the year.

Regarding the missed field goal, I didn’t see anything wrong with the hold. He just yanked it left. That’s okay, he will get other chances.

Same as the UCF game CMR loves kicking or trying to kick field goals. The three we kicked should have been touch downs all of those we drives stopped by pass plays when runs had been working during the drives. We got 6 points of three field goal attempts. Had we gone for it don’y you think we would have scored 7 at least once! I do. Spurrier would have gone for it everytime. If Spurrier was our coach he would have won the game. YESSSS WE were outcoached again!!!

This won does not fall squarely on Murray. When our running game is working why force Murray to do it all? Had we been more aggressive early and not been so willing to kick field goals we would have never been in the situation late in the game where Murray is supposed to pass on every play, take the entire team on his back and win it. That is not neccessay but that is the way Bobo and Richt like it. All we had to do during the game was run it on 1st and 2nd done then usually run it on 3rd and an “ocational pass” on 3rd down when the D is not expecting it. That would have controlled the game and won it, but Richt and Bobo have their pre determined run pass ratio that they follow no matter what.

Dawg Reality Check

September 11th, 2011
8:45 am

Chip — You believe we kept Marcus Lattimore “in check?” What game were you watching? 176 yards rushing. Time and time again they gave him the ball and he delivered. Garcia was not having a good game and everyone in the stadium knew he was getting the ball and we still couldn’t stop him. No fumbles, no mistakes. A lot of big plays, but in the end he was the difference.

tc

September 11th, 2011

another thing. ever notice how CMR treats the first 2 or three games of the season as NFL preseason where he figures out how to improve while starting in an uneccessary huge whole that ruins our ranking and championship hopes. this has happened fairly often. We screw our season and then run the table and everyone says wait til next year and we start the same way

Take heart, just as soon as the schedule gets easier the DAWGS will be okay. Soon Dawg fans will be able to claim things have been turned around. The excuses are already being put forward. The same guys that three weeks ago were going to win the SEC East are now too young but will get better. Blah, blah, we have heard it all before.

The game was an improvement form the first game but not good enough. I am not looking for slight improvement from week to week. Why should slight improvement be sufficient? Why do Georgia fans always get up and leave when the team gets behind late in a game? when the team needs fan support most? I have never seen another team whose fans have that mentality. And then they sometimes have to rush back in when Georgia makes a quick score to make it interesting. Is parking at all the stadiums Georgia plays in really that bad? Perhaps Georgia’s team just takes on the character of its fans, that of a Quitter.

UGA lost the game in the first quarter due to bad third down calls by Bobo. Third and nine he calls a run play. What percentage of runs get nine yards? Then another drive on third and three he calls a pass play. Wouldn’t the odds be much better with Crowell running? Both drives fail because of lack of basic play calling intelligence. In these close games it’s the little things that make the difference and Bobo costs us another one.

A lot of fans think Mark Richt is intelligent, but I think he’s a moron who doesn’t understand how to manage a game. Almost all of UGA’s losses during the past couple of years can be attributed to poor game management by the head coach, as well as soft zone defenses by both Grantham and Martinez before him. At least they played tighter defense against SC, but really, a 68-yard fake punt? Whether or not Richt is, or thinks he is, a good Christian might make him a nice guy, but has no bearing on whether or not he’s a good coach. The top-tier SEC schools, LSU, Auburn, Florida, would have canned him long ago. Richt’s more on a par with Houson Nutt.

Yesterday’s effort may have won the game or at least have let Boise know they were in a game last week. I appreciate the effort and the much improved play selection, which of course is due to Oline play. The D at times looked like a 34 D. Nonetheless still a loss, and losing should be unacceptable. To not subscribe to that way of thinking is to be receptive to mediocrity.

Say what? Brilliant analysis Chip. You should join the UGA football staff given your keen insight to the game.

Yesterday’s effort would have at least let Boise know they were in a game last Saturday. The 4 T/O’s killed us but not being nable to hold Lattimore below the 100 yd mark hurt as much or more in losing effort. Once he broke it outside he broke containment as no one was in position to stop him. Thats the DC’s fault for not putting a LB on the strong side to prevent him from turning the corner as often as he did especially late in the game w/6 minutes to play.

On the fake punt, w/SC you have to assume all punts might be fake and be prepared for it. Boykin missed the tackle but the other 10 guys were on the ground or just caught flat footed. Special teams coach doesn’t impress at all. Our on sides kick was too close to call off sides and we got screwed on that deal.

GA should have come away w/at least one TD out of the 3 FG attempts, better two, but poor play calling cost us a score early on. Bobo finally woke up in the 2d half and either ran wide or screened it out to the RB’s instead of Samual up the middle. I feel for Samual, with few exceptions he still has trouble staying on his feet and finding the hole unless its right in front of him. He’s a down hill runner when he’s not on the ground. Again Bobo, too little too late.

We have some good young players. Bennett and Mitchell will be stars. Both are good receivers. IC is a few lbs short of being a better back. He’s best we have but what the heck is w/Boo malcome??

I feel bad for CMR. He’s just being out coached. While other SEC HC’s find a way to win these games he’s been on the losing end more often then he used to be. GA’s football team is the type of team where victory can hinge on a few critical play calling decisions on either side of the ball. Over the past 3 seasons and now going on 4, it seems this coaching staff is not making the correct decisions to win the close games or be able to put the opposition away. Hate to say it but its time for a change.

Gosh.. It seems even ESPN knows the problem with CMR. Earlier today they showed a graphic between when CMR was calling the offensive plays and when CMR announced he was becoming a CEO type head coach which will take some getting used to… The learning curve has meant to the Bulldog nation a slow descent into loserville… CMR has lost his edge.. The edge that made him and the Bulldog nation national title contenders in CMR’s second year coaching… I never wanted to see a great coach destroy himself, but CMR has pretty much done that… He has got a QB in Murray that was recruited out of high school with a broken leg (gets hurt in high school is a sign he is definitely not durable enough for the SEC), he always throws interceptions or fumbles that cost the team games, and he looks like a rag doll in headlights when he sees a big SEC defensive lineman coming his way…. The kid just isn’t an SEC caliber QB… Yea.. he can look good from time to time… yea he piles up yards and passing TD’s… but he is the reason for the 28 points given to South Carolina on a platter last night… Where are the days when a player makes 1 mistake in a critical game and is taken out of the game??? I see Crowell was taken out for his fumble (when on closer inspection was a sloppy handoff from Murray)… Murray should have been pulled and Georgia would have had a better chance at winning….

Mr.McGarity need to do an investigation on Mark Richt to see if he was a dawg hater when they hired him. The way he manage these games make me think about that referee(Tim Donaghy) who affected the outcome of those nba games.

Face it GA fans, your team AIN’T that GOOD!

SC owned you like Bosie State did. You will be lucky to go 6-6! Wait until the end of the season so you can get Kirby Smart!

The SEC wants Texas A&M – to replace Ga. They know that the AD and Prez won’t fire Richt anytime soon, so our football program will just continue to get worse and worse. Ga. will be able to apply for readmission when they come to their senses and hire a real football coach.

No colleballfan you are dead wrong, we gave both those games away. If we had coaches that only accepted winning we would be sitting at 2-0 in the Top 5 nationally right now instead of 0-2 and looking for some easy wins to build-up confidence. The first game was lost because of Coach Richt’s demeanor and the team not being ready to play and focused on the job at at hand. Yesterday’s game was lost because certain players were taking plays off at crucial times. A forth year senior starter on the o-line does not just let a guy go on a slip screen to his inside, but that happened which was one of those 4 touchdowns given up because we lost focus. Also # 83 would be sitting on the bench, I don’t care how talented he is if he doesn’t learn from his mistakes and his very poor effort then he sits on the bench until he decides he wants to play. There are other issues as well one of which is our special teams, I could see that fake punt coming, this happens every year it seems. How many times does this have to happen before Coach Richt grows a pair and starts demanding that his assistants get this team ready in all facets of the game. We lost once again because of losing focus in crucial situations, it also does not help when the officials are calling every tacky tack penalty on you, but misses offensive holding where the O-lineman has a hold of our players facemask.

Unfortunately for the future of the program, our schedule is about to get REAL easy…all the Richt lovers will say “I told you so” after he rips off 3 or 4 wins in a row, and I’ll again be called every name in the book when I point out that our team is still unprepared and CLUELESS from week to week.

Why would someone that’s a fan of another team spend their time posting on a UGA blog? It’s called keyboard courage, people type things that they would never say to anyone’s face. If you are going to criticize UGA, at least have the courage to name the program you are a fan of. That way we will know about your top notch program that’s never had down years.

A long ride back from Jacksonville
500 miles from a game we should’ve won
Man we ought a burn down that stadium
Thought this year was gonna be ours
Talking too much junk in those Florida bars
Now I’m stunned
man I wish it was 1981,

now I know why they say
every dog has his days
can’t win every game we play
but every dog has his days

Longing for those glory days
like the one he cried run Lindsay Run
I was too young to be there but I’m sure it was fun
I bet that crowd was flyin high
And I bet Glory to ol’ Georgia was cried as the band played
Man I wish I could feel that way today

now I know why they say
every dog has his days
can’t win every game we play
but every dog has his days

and I played back my favorite victories
like that last minute win up in Tennessee
I bet them hob nails hurt like hell
And I got sweet memories of 2002 won the SEC
And the sugar bowl too
Man we had a ball down on Bourbon Street
Ooh, those were the days

Just got my tickets in the mail
Septembers coming fast and I can hardly wait
They say these guys they might take us all the way
And if they do I’ll be flying high
and there’ll probably be a happy tear in my eye but rain or shine
I’ll be yellin’ go Dawgs from the 20 yard line, and

I know why they say
every dog has his days
can’t win every game we play
but every dog has his days

and we’ll be singing
Glory, Glory to ol’ Georgia
Glory, Glory to ol’ Georgia
Glory, Glory to ol’ Georgia
Oh Georgia Hail to the

To you tasteless detractors: you show the creativity of a third-grader who’s in the third grade for the second time. Here’s a tip for you. While you are here wowing us with your brainlessness maybe you ought to see who your women are emailing/texting. My guess it is a real man who carries himself far better than you do. No doubt a man that satisfies them. Something you can’t do.

I don’t see how you can blame Bobo on this one , If you score 42 pts you expect to win, Turn overs were the cause of the loss to SC, Turn overs are caused by mistakes or by the opposing team, Not by Mike Bobo’s game plan, Richt has recruited a lot of talent and I think he is on the verge of reaping the reward, Wheather or not he is given the time to do so is yet to be seen, someone said he is 14 and 14 over the last 24 games I don’t know if this is true or not but these kind of numbers will get you fired at most schools, Even Vandy or Kentucky would’nt put up with such a record, I hope Coach Richt can turn things around and restore Ga to the upper tier of SEC football.

It is just too bad that we are not reading here that Mark RIcht and his coaching staff have been FIRED or RESIGNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Poorest job of head coaching that I have ever seen – Mark Richt is a fake and fraud as a head coach and a man or he woudl resign out of pure embarassment and shame. The University of Georgia deserves better and I call on the AD and President of the University to give Mark Richt his walking papers as soon as possilble!!!!!

UGA fans crack me up…you put up almost 400 yards on Boise and over 400 yards on South Carolina and you want to fire Bobo? Really? What happened to all that SEC defense? That’s your problem not Bobo, your defense is awful!

Fire CMR? again REALLY? 96 wins in 10 years, even your beloved Dooley never did that…if you fire him who ya gonna get that’s better, Goff..Donnan? Hell i hear Tressel’s looking for a job…get over your yourselves UGA is not an elite program, never has been and never will be, it is simply a very good program that is middle of the rd in the SEC. It will win 8 – 10 games a year (look at your history) like it always has and compete for a title every 10-15 years. That’s why you traditionally lose to Florida, Aurburn, Tennessee, and Spurrier (no matter where he is) cuz your program simnply isn’t that great.

But go ahead and start your we’ll get em next year chants cuz it happens every season.

Murray looks good at times and then turns around and looks like a rookie. He needs to STOP staring down his receiver. Never have I seen him look one way and come back the other. Garcia did a nice job of baiting the safety one way and then throwing to the other side of the field for a TD.

Murray also got tossed around like a tin can instead of taking the sack. He needs to understand these are SEC linemen with the same if not more speed than him. On the handoff to IC looked again as if Murray missed the bread basket.

I like the kid but in big games he seems to lose focus.

Dawg Reality Check: I said “Lattimore, kept in check for much of the game, finished with 176 yards.” Lattimore had 29 yards in the first quarter, 63 at halftime and 82 at the end of the third quarter. Also zero scores to that point. So, yes, the Bulldogs held him in check until the fourth quarter. I didn’t say they shut him down.

If Aaron Murray is the best QB in the SEC, then there is a huge shortage of good QB’s. I will take Wilson or Bray over Murray. He played ok last season, but so far this year he has not been nearly as good. Maybe when you play your first high school game for the season this week, he will play better. Loss #3 comes Oct. 1 against Missy State, and a good chance that #4 will come a week later at Tennessee, the most improved team in the SEC this season. If nothing else, they have a good coach.

Overall a much more inspired effort, but Dawgs wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard when time ran out. They showed a lot of guts coming back over and over again. Mistakes cost them, and Boykin needs to do tackle drills for 4 hours every day this week. I agree with many of the posts about the UGA fans. Did you see how the Michigan fans stuck it out in a sea of yellow? They were rewarded with 2 touchdowns in the last 1:30. Some great fans there!

Two games we should have lost?? I think NOT. We have had better recruiting classes than Boise and SC every year for the last ten years. We have more overall talent that nearly every team we play every year. Measure it by recruiting class rankings or number of players that are drafted to the NFL. UGA would have great recruiting classes if Pee Wee Herman were the coach. The state produces a lot of talent and there is no competition for it in state. This is the same discussion we had last year. We do nothing different and yet we expect different results. Do you really believe that Saban would have lost with this team? or even the #@$& Old Ball Coach?? I agree that CMR is a good man but what we need is a good COACH. If CMR is here next year, just paste these comments, good and bad, in once again. Same story different year. If there is a hot seat, I will be happy to pass the coal.
