Video: What Dogs must do better vs. Gamecocks and what it means for Richt

Below is my weekly pregame video chat with CineSport’s Noah Coslov in advance of Georgia’s SEC opener against South Carolina on Saturday. We talk about what the Bulldogs need to do better against the Gamecocks, the team’s current emotional state, what they need to do to contain Marcus Lattimore and whether or not this is the biggest game of coach Mark Richt’s career.

GREAT ENTERTAINMENT! I love the racist DAWGS the best. I wonder if all those top coaches hear about this stuff? Meyer: go coach Georgia? “Sure but you have to deal with the nut case fan base and they are much worse than Florida”. “there’s not enough money they could offer me”. Stan, please take your pill and call the doctor, your ADHD is out control. Get your mom to drive you to the hospital if necessary. Thanks for the pick me up! Bless your heart!

Line play. Period. The Dawgs need to control the line of scrimage. Boise pushed our much larger players around like they were stuffed with feathers. This can NOT happen and expect a team to win in the SEC. Line coaches need to seriously get their poop in a group.

It was, because the defense did very poorly at 07′ TN game and the offense punted its first & possessions, one blocked. Obviously there was a reason to critisize that…. everthing. And the folks that still supported the guys employed AT THE TIME and for ther rest of the season with games to play did so out of anything BUT blindness.

In the (somewhat distant) past, when The Dawgs absolutely, positively HAD to win they almost always did.

In two days we find out for certain if there is anything left in the coaching staff that can pull out a victory against a very good South Carolina Team.

More and more fans are being sold on the notion the Boise State Game was not a true test of The Dawgs since BSU is rated 4 in the country. On the contrary, we found out that our Defense – you know, the one that was supposed to be vastly improved over last year and well schooled in the 3 – 4, gave up 35 points in the opening game to a team that had never beaten an SEC Team.

Saturday will depict the ultimate bottom when SC wins by 14 or more and our coaches will finally realize THEY are the problem and not the annual plethora of talent they were good at recruiting.

This is the end of what Dawg Nation believed to be the beginning of an era. On the other hand, it will be the beginning of what I believe will be a much more successful era (regrettably, post season).

Richt, Bobo and Grantham have been doing something other than coaching. My guess is crack cocaine from what I saw this past Saturday. UGA will get waxed by USCe because they will face a team that is actually coached (a la Boise State). Bobo is a bozo and so is Richt for nodding his spray-tanned head with every idiotic offensive call that is made during the game. Hate to state it but the Dawgs go down hard.

The Dawgs need to do a better job at firing the clowns that currently occupy the coaching positions, and hire in a group that can:

1. Coach up this talented group of players so that they reach their potential.
2. Be innovative in their strategy and play-calling on both sides of the ball.
3. Make in-game adjustments when the other team adjusts to their initial game plan.
4. Instill the discipline in the players needed to play assignment football.

Until the Dawgs find a good coaching staff, they will continue to falter. Believe it or not, we haven’t seen the low point for Richt & his staff.

@AltamahaDawg -

Lol, I use the word “blindly” once in my whole diatribe and that’s what you decided to focus on? Maybe that wasn’t the best word choice but ok bud. Take the words “just blindly” out and re-read my diatribe.

I just get tired of being labelled a “bad fan” because I’m critical of this coaching staff. They deserve every single ounce of criticism they’re getting right now. I still donated this year, I still bought a new UGA hat and and a few shirts before the season because I foolishly bought into this dream team and Richt’s fired up again total crap. Now I feel like I was tricked and lied to. I’ll always love and root for the Bulldogs no matter what but I don’t recall signing anything saying I couldn’t be critical of the coaching staff when they’re on a consistent 3-4 year downhill slide to mediocrity and I’m a part of footing the bill for it.

Actually in 2002 I didn’t have much criticism, I was pretty darn happy with 13-1 and they were a solid and disciplined team (with Donnan’s players, lol). In 2007, yes I had some criticism because I saw the beginnings of this downhill slide. Even though it was a good year, 2007 really was the first year I glaringly (my eyes were wide open) noticed the lack of discipline, lack of creativity on offense and other problems that have continued and only gotten worse. I didn’t have near as much criticism in 2007 as I do now. I was more just a little concerned about what I was seeing but yes, I’ll admit I had a little that year.

2007: 11-2
2008: 10-3
2009: 8-5
2010: 6-7

Please tell me I’m not the only one that sees a pattern that’s not so good here. As I said before, we can blow off steam and play armchair coach/AD on these comments and in blogs, forums…whatever, but the only real recourse we have as fans is to leave games early, not go to games and/or not donate and I just refuse to believe that people exercising those options to send a message are “bad fans”.

I hope like crazy that we beat SC and turn this thing around but the realist in me just doesn’t see how it’s going to happen under the current coaching staff. Too many of the same problems cropping up every year for the past 3-4 years that don’t seem capable of being corrected by CMR and company.

In my opinion, the D showed signs of improvement from last season, but ONLY in the 1st half of the Boise game. They held Boise to 14 pts. in the 1st half and did a good job in making stops. Unfortunately, during the 2nd half, things went south and Boise had a field day. If the D can GATA against SC (all 4 quarters) like they did in the 1st half of Sat’s game, then I think they will be able to keep it competitive. The primary issue with this team is the offense and the O-line. Murray is not the issue, it’s the poor job that the O-line is doing. I don’t know how we can fix that in the short term, but here’s hoping that we will see a different team on Sat. On a side note, Malcolm Mitchell needs to see a lot of playing time this season. The kid is a play maker & I see him doing great things while at UGA. GO DAWGS!

New Strength/Conditioning coach – F
New running game – F
Wasting another year of great talent in a sh!tty flag-football system – A+
Mark Richt – F – 3rd year in a row.
Fan base that fluffed CMR into another season – FFF!!!!!!!!!

You panzies who defended the head coach of this powder puff system are every bit as responsible for him turning our beloved Dawgs into the laughing stock of a team.

1. None of the top FIFTY high school teams in GA would trade their OC for Bobo.

2. EVERY other SEC coach takes what we have in the cupboard in Athens and wears. Boise ST out last Saturday night.

Still makes me want to puke.

I’ll always be a Dawg (52 years), but my Cardiologist ells me I need to leave them alone this year and follow the Falcons this year. Under Drs. orders, I will do so until Mark Richt is replaced.

I think UGA can definately win the game if they can play with the defensive intensity they started with in the Boise St. game. USC’s offense won’t be near as balanced and the qb play will be several notches below. They did just play against a Heisman candidate. Get Boykin maybe a 3-5 touches on offense, use Samuel mainly for blocking until he gets his legs and let Murray get out of pocket more and use his legs. I’ve seen Lattimore a few times and while he’s a good back, I don’t see him as a great back. He gets tough yards between the tackles but isn’t much of a breakaway threat. Make Garcia win the game if he can. It will be a close game. 24-20 UGA

NJ, if you added up ALL of the comments from Georgia fans over the years and picked out the one that accused anyone of not being a “real fan” for expressing any sort of legitimate dissatisfaction with certain outcomes, it would be what be be what???? .000009%. It probably about the same frequency as folks who claim that anyone not posting one negative post after another are the ones that caused the football team to fail in the first place, wouldn’t you say. And it WAY less than the folks who flatly call other names and insults, when they don’t go for the exaggerations and bashing that goes on in here.

You don’t seem like an irrational guy. You sound like a great dawg fan. Why would you feel so victimized by the folks who call out “bad fans”, when you know they weren’t talking to you in the first place?

And on the other , the reason I focused on the term “blindly” the word, I am pretty sure you know. The point was that now that you are no longer standing by and (insert whatever term) supporting this staff, what actual changes to your action will there be? As if you were somehow blindly supporting them 2 weeks ago, but not today. I’m sure you do want the “team” to win, and you still realize who is coaching them. Pretty much the same as yesterday, last week, 2002. Just found it odd to make such a declaration.

And of course you meant that anybody supporting this staff right now is doing so “blindly”. Which is pretty much as misplaced as calling somebody a “bad fan” is it not?

NJ Dawg, I’ve tried to draw a picture for these guys but they don’t buy in. You are totally correct in you assessment of Richt winning with Donnan’s players. All the way to 2006, or 2007 as you pointed out. When you get down to the theory, or science of motivation, culture, whatever you want to call it, new people come in and will fit into the environment they are brought into. People will say Donnan’s players were gone in 2005, 2006. They were, but the new players being signed in 2003, 2004 were exposed, and learned from those that Donnan had recruited. It wasn’t until 2007 that the culture had been eroded to the point we were seeing cracks in the foundation. Now, we have no one on this team that has experienced the work ethic, the loyalty, the discipline, of the Donnan era players. Mark Richt came along a lot like Chuck Gruden, and won with someone elses players. His weakness has been that he himself isn’t capable of building an organization that can be successful. Pure and simple, he doesn’t have CEO qualities. As popular as he is with some, he will not turn this around, and he will be gone at the end of this year. He will continue to prosper in other areas.

South Carolina’s defensive line will obliterate Georgia’s inexperienced O-line. This will force Murray to make some quick and rather hasty decisions that he ought not make or take more sacks. I would also anticipate some holding penalties that will be drive killers. As previously mentioned, Crowell is not the answer this year in the backfield, but will hopefully progress with more experience. Georgia’s defense will be sucking wind by halftime after the offense fails to move the ball downfield. This is going to be a repeat of the Boise game except that South Carolina will be able to both run the ball with Lattimore and pass the ball into open space when necessary. I really don’t think this game is going to be a close one. Carolina by three scores or more.

AltamahaDawg,

Lol, I don’t feel victimized at all. I have a bunch of buddies back in ATL that are kool aid drinking Richt lovers so they give me crap about being a bad or fairweather fan every time I have any little criticism for the coaching staff. Then I come on here and see more of the same. Was really just venting I suppose because I think the “bad fan” or “not a real fan” label that gets put on some of the people criticizing is unwarranted. I’m sure from reading my comments here it probably seems as if I’m some totally obsessed UGA fan that thinks about nothing else but in reality being a UGA fan doesn’t really take up very much of my time or energy. I definitely have much more important things to worry about.

If Richt is still the coach next season there will definitely be changes in my action. If Richt is still the coach next year I won’t be donating, I probably won’t buy any new gear and I definitely won’t be spending the money on plane tickets, hotels and game tickets to go to a few games like I normally do. As I’ve mentioned, that’s all I can really do as a fan to express my disapproval of the current situation. 2 weeks ago, before I saw the same old bs on the field I’ve been seeing for 3-4 years, I was a fool buying into the dream team and Richt being more excited and energized crap. Now I know better, I won’t be fooled again.

The “blindly” was simply a bad choice of words but I do feel that anyone still supporting this current coaching staff and thinking they can turn anything around must be as blind as a 200 year old albino cave bat.

Major doubts that UGA can win this one because of Mark Richt and Mike Bobo’s idea that UGA can run a no-huddle spread. This stupid idea will yield at least a couple of unexpected losses because when it fails (often), the D will be back on the field before it can catch it’s breath. How Richt thinks he can win in the SEC and save his job with this nonsense is shocking. Bobo is headed for high school football, we know that. It’s Richt who obviously has lost it. UGA has NEVER won anything or contended for the East unless they played D, ran the ball successfully and kept the ball away from the other team. I guess we can begin the process of speculating who the next coach will be at UGA. Even if UGA wins Saturday, they’ll get waxed by Mississippi State and lose again to Florida and probably either Auburn or Ga Tech. 8-4 at best this season.

I’d say your friends probably are reacting more to you dismissing them as nothing more than “kool-aid drinkers” or “Richt Lovers” with no regards to thier actual motivations or perspectives, so they finally resorted to throwing you into some broad oversimplified categories too. Blog nation, Listen week in and Week out we say what the Dawgs should, could, and if they “just would”. Folks there’s one thing that Basketball, Baseball, and Football have in common. Basic fundamentals, and less face it Georgia(the vast majority) is not playing sound fundamental football. Here’s a breakdown of what needs corrected. Lets start at QB: Aaron Murray on more than one occasion held the ball way to long, locks in on Charles a little to much as a result of being H.S. teammates, and isn’t being productive in the pocket. Receivers up next, T.King at times looks great, but that’s just it he isn’t consistent from game to game, and Marlon Brown seems to be at best a third receiver. It’s time to look at some freshmen, and someone please explain why Rantavious Wooten isn’t getting the ball in space? Next up our O-Line, this was perhaps the worst performance of all groups in the Boise game with Anderson getting two penalties on the first five plays, and our Tackles just got beat off the ball all night.Tight Ends looked good, although Bobo never seems to put them in two T.E. set’s enough. And finally on this side of the Ball, Richard Samuels is to stiff, Isiah seems to be the real deal, but why is “Boo Malcome” not getting one touch?Dawg fans, remember some back named Terrell Davis? point being give this guy some touches. Knowshon set down a year, and look at what he did.give this guy some touches. Now to our Defense, Somebody, anybody explain to me how to 6′4 + 350lb guys at nose tackle be handled so easy by a 5″11 285 nose center? Linebackers on run plays looked great,(J. Jones the real deal) but where was they on those short dump passes to the Tight Ends? Didn’t our to D Ends get recruited as D Tackles? Where was T.J. Stripling, Ray Drew, both highly recruited pure Defensive Ends? Believe it or not the secondary played great, I thought that Boise got a lot of short passes off and didn’t get away with the long ball to much. This week Richt must focus on play calling, pulling guys who under perform, and Grantham as got to make guys play with fire in that belly. South Carolina can be passed on, they stunk on D against ECU and Georgia can pull this off. Lets go Dawg Nation, because not only is Richt on the “HOT SEAT”, But this loss would cost a lot of no shows at Sanford Stadium this year.

NJ Dawg, it’s hard to hear another fan talk about what has happened “the last 3-4 years” .. yes, last year was a disaster at 6-7. The year before was 8-5. Both of those years were with first year starters. But the year before that was 2008 and they had a 10 win season. And four years ago was 2007 and they won 11 games topped off by a BCS bowl game win. In fact, before the 8-5 2009 season, UGA had won 74 games over a 7 year span from 2002-2008. But back to back mediocre seasons and everyone thinks they’re a soon-to-be SEC coach themselves. Let this season play out!

Well bingo. Are you new here?

And i get very well you not wanting to be called a bad fan. I think that’s silly thing to call anyone. Not even sure what bad fans means. A bad fan just doesnt care or watch if you ask me. …My point was I am POSITIVE that your pals are not “koolaid drinking Richt Lovers” anymore than you are a “bad fan”.

I think the reason you don;t understand why some folks are not as vocally upset is that if you will notice, there were a lot of us that were very measured in our reasonable expectations this summer. We don’t HAVE to declare all of a sudden we aren’t going to buy any more tickets, we knew when we bought them this year what the deal was.

You claim you bought into the hype of the dream team and a energetic coach, and not that they lost to BSU in miserable form , you no longer believe any of that.

I ,and quite a few in here, aren;t really as hype sensitive i suppose. And we don;t discard the bottom line so quick. STILL believe that was an awesome recruiting class bringing much needed talent but never expected they could transform a 6-7 team into a top 5 in a matter of weeks. When it didnt, i wasn;t as surprised. We STILL believe the staff put a lot more time in conditioning, but that was always a matter of degrees in the first place , not night and day. they should finish stronger in late game with the score on the line. We STILL believe that every single sports writer, player, friend, and outsider that covered the dawgs was correct in saying that the staff showed more urgency, and energy in the offseason. But it was never a magic formula. We KNOW the behaviour issues were down. So while we are completely disappointed that it didn’t show up better in game 1 out of 12 (and the toughest) I’df still rather they did. We expected a team to have a much more successful season. I think they will. The coach position will take take of itself.

(we also knew what the Oline was, and how thin we were at postions, and how freshman are normally not supermen).

NJ Dawg

TampaDawg,

And how many first year starters do we have this year? Quite a few. Why do we have 3 years in a row of “first year starters”? That doesn’t seem to make sense. I realize we had a good record in ‘07 and ‘08 but ‘07 was the first year I started noticing the glaring lack of discipline, lack of fundamentals, lack of creativity, etc., etc. All of the problems I started noticing in ‘07 have just gotten worse every year. Besides, you can thank Stafford and Moreno for the records in ‘07 and ‘08, without those 2 the records probably would have been more akin to last season and the ‘09 season.

I’m not claiming to be a soon-to-be SEC coach but gimme a break. You don’t have to be a coach or football expert to see the problems. It’s pretty sad when your 12 year old nephew that’s never played a lick of football in his life keeps asking you “Why do they keep running up the middle over and over when it never works?” and “Why do they get so many penalties?” and “why can’t they tackle anyone?” and “Why can’t they block anyone?”

AltamahaDawg,

Lol, I guess I am kind of new here. Been lurking for years but usually just keep my opinions to myself. I guess I’m experiencing a lack of UGA comradery (kind of funny that AJC’s spellcheck thinks comradery is spelled wrong or not a word, lol) and UGA discussion up here in Jersey so thought I’d jump in here.

I wasn’t expecting us to go from last year to a title contender this year or anything and although I was hoping, I realistically wasn’t really expecting a win over Boise either. I was however expecting to see a much more disciplined, stronger and fundamentally sound team against Boise. What I saw was the opposite and they looked even worse than they did against UCF in the bowl game.

Oh, and I’m not discarding the bottom line. The bottom line here in my humble opinion is that the current coaching staff has no clue what the f they’re doing. I just can’t think of any other explanation for how we consistently get so much talent but don’t do anything with it under the current regime.
