ATHENS — Sorry for the relative lack of presence on the blog today. I had to tune into the SEC Coaches teleconference, videotape a segment for ESPN’s College GameDay and go get my knee worked on at my orthopedist’s office. But I’m saddled up here at practice now and will bring you updates the rest of the day.
As for the SEC teleconferecne, Georgia coach Mark Richt continued to get peppered with thinly-veiled queries insinuating that is job may be on this line this week or this year or whatever. For him, that’s pretty much four days in a row of that line of questioning and you can tell that’s it’s starting to wear on him a little bit.
I’ll just quickly share some of his answers from his 10-minute or so session and you’ll get an idea what I mean:
Does Saturday’s game feel like a must-win?
“I wouldn’t say that. It’s a very important game for us, very crucial for the Eastern Division race. It’s not a must win mathematically for the race or not a must win in any other way I know of. But is it crucially important? There’s no doubt about that. But we look at every game like it’s a must-win game, so however you want to spin it, you can spin it. You guys spin it anyway you want anyway. So do with that what you want.”
What’s the general feeling on the team about having to face No. 12 South Carolina coming off such a disappointing loss to Boise State?
“I’d say excitement right now. These guys are really excited about playing this ballgame. They’re getting a chance to play between the hedges for the first time this year, getting play SEC competition for the first time. Maybe they’ll get some form of redemption for last week as far as how we played overall. So everybody’s got a good attitude. They showed up ready to work.”
What about keeping up team morale?
“We don’t have that issue right now. Everybody out there might think that, but nobody had to push anybody yesterday. Everybody’s in, everybody’s working hard, the scout teamers know that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are their game days basically . They’ve got to go great job to simulate what’s going on and I thought they did their part. We were in full pads going live football and competing. There’s no motivational issue right now. There’s no need for anybody to pick anybody up. We’re just going to contuinue to work hard and prepare.”
What are you doing to insulate your team from crictism?
“We’re just coaching ball, OK? You guys want to make things bigger than they are. The bottom line is like anything in life, you’ve got to control what you can, and that is my attitude and my effort and our team’s attitude and effort. That’s true every season. Today’s no different than a year ago or two years ago going into Game two in my mind. Everybody’s locked in, everybody’s working hard and everybody’s confident we’re going to have a good ballgame.”
How do you keep from focusing on the big picture job of getting the program turned around but having to get ready for a tough opponent?
“You answered your own question. You just go to work every day. What can I do today that’s going to help us in Game 9, not much other than getting better at fundamentals, get better at tackling and those kinds of things, and that’s going to help me on Saturday. The goal is to get ready for South Carolina and that’s what we’re going.”
With all the fan forums and blogs and Internet coverage, how do you filter out the noise?
“Well, just what I’ve been saying all along: We get in our meetings, we focus on our jobs, we practice, we compete well, we use the type of energy it takes to have a good day. We can control certain things and that’s what we focus on. And that’s when you’re winning, too, and you’ve got people saying how great you are. You’ve got to be insulated from that, too. If anybody gets to involved in anything that’s swirling around good or bad it doesn’t help you win. So I think you’ve got to manage that.”
Do you address it with the team?
“We don’t talk about it, quite franlkly. We’;e going to work. It’s Game Two, it’s Game One in league play. I don’t see what the issue is as far as any kind of reality,. I don’t even know what’s swirling around. Everybody says there’s stuff swirling around. I usually find about it if my mom calls or I go to church and everybody says they’re praying extra hard for me. That’s when I know it’s out there.”
OK, that’s enough about that. Here’s what some of the SEC coach — including Richt — had to say about the eventual addition of Texas A&M to the SEC.
PRACTICE OBSERVATIONS
Real quickly, practice is ongoing. Georgia is in full pads for the second consecutive day. Very unusual. . . . Wide receiver Marlon Brown was wearing a green jersey. His left ankle was heavily wrapped but not sure if that’s the reason. . . . Nose guard Kwame Geathers, who suffered a neck injury (aka stinger) was nowhere to be found for the second straight day.”

If you’re happy with the product on the field then donate your tickets to a Boys & Girls Club and just stay home and watch a goat. Then maybe you won’t become so smart as to cheer 19yr olds. You may think you’re cheers are targeted at Richt and staff, but it’s the players and future players that hear that crap and you end up making that much harder for the program regardless of who will be coaching beyond this year. The “we’re behind you only as long as you’re winning” BS is a heckuva way to support the team. Send a message, absolutely, but do it by sending your money. Booing college kids, especially your own team, is completely in line when an empty seat sends a less effective message. There are myriad ways to conceal your dissatisfaction without the ugliness of raining cheers down on the players.

The rednecks are restless. We all want to win, but right now we want UGA to win this Saturday. Say what you want, but the team is our TEAM. Pull for them to do the best that they can do. If CMR is going to make it let him make it. Do you fools want to fire him in the middle of the 2nd qtr of some game. How many times have we been ready to fire a coach. Dooley was on the hot seat in 74 the in 77 after losing the MNC to Pitt he lost to Wafe Forest. Do you fools remember that. How about 79, they got stomped by our real rivals. Let the year unfold. If CMR needs to leave, then he will be leaving, if he has it turned around, then it will be done. Were you guys mad when Clemson but UGA in 1981, well they won the MNC. Think about it, Clemson won the MNC over Nebraska. If CMR is to be sent away, it will all go back to this. He didn’t free Willie soon enough, and he didn’t hire a real Off coordinator. That is it! So get off everyones case and let them play out.

I’ve about had enough of the excuses for some of these players and their “injuries”.
A bad ankle now for Brown? Really?
Kwame Geathers is a 6′6″, 350 lb cry-baby who can’t play one whole game without coming out of the game with another ailment of sorts.
Gates practiced the spring and all of fall camp with no problems whatsoever…but now when this team needs him the most he all of sudden can’t play because he’s “hurt”.
Ogletree is the only player on the team with any excuse BECAUSE HE HAS A BROKEN FOOT, and he would still go in and play if they would let him.
The rest of these whiners need to take notes.
I’m sick of it and fed up with the whole green jersey wearing lot of them.

@Ralph
You are correct and I too am a long time Dawg fan and follower. Most people here on this blog all have the mentality of “what have you done for me lately”. Most were not around when we suffered through the bad Dooley years, or even the Goff years. Most forget before Richt got here it had been TWENTY years since we won an SEC title. They think this 3year slide is an eternity. I too am disappointed by the start after hearing of all the changes, however; lets give this season a little more time. To boo the home team really makes us look a lot like the haters are here say we are and that’s really sad.

(1) Ralph is really Richt. Suprised he would hang out on these boards.
(2) I can’t get the vision of our winded, out-of-shape defense out of my mind. WTF? I’m over 40 and Cardio Insanity has me lookin’ 20 and in the best shape of my life…I could really run cricles around those guys…seriously, too much strength training and not enough cardio conditioning. Did they prepare for the season??? Talk about insanity…
(3) Boise St’s performance did provide quite a bit of motivation and confidence for my sons. I live in Florida and at one point well into the arse-whoopin’ I told my boys (who happen to be caucasion), “see, you guys can not only compete with, but exceed the speed and athleticism of the African-American athletes at school, just look at what this Boise St team of white boys is doing to our Georgia Dawgs.” And they got to see the same thing when BYU beat Ole Miss. Hey, it’s the silver lining…

Please stop calling anyone on this blog “fair weathered” or “bandwagon” fans. All such fans have been gone for three years now. None are left. We now have two types of hardcore fans–hardcore Dawg fans, and hardcore Richt fans. One set wants to win championships, and the other set is happy with 10 wins and an Outback Bowl birth. It’s simple. But, none of us are bandwagon fans. That ship has sailed.

…and, the Dooley comparisons are not as good as people think. I often wonder how many national titles we would have won if Dooley would have been fired in ‘72. With him, we won one, when we should have won about 7 (’75, ‘76, ‘80, ‘81, ‘82, ‘83, ‘88). This is where we are at now with Richt. It’s like 1972 all over. Do we keep a nice coach that may win us one title in 25 years in the distant future if all the stars align and a Herschel comes in that no coach could screw up? Or do we fire him and get a coach that will win multiple titles with the rich High School talent the state has? In other words, do we want the nice man to win us one title in a quarter century, or the hard a$$ that will win us 4 titles in 12 years? I honestly think these Richtofiles would rather have the former. It’s sad because we are capable of so much more.

Richt really isn’t that much better than what we had before him. Donnan lost 3.8 games a year, Richt loses 3.5 games a year (not counting this year which will bring his average up past Donnan’s). All the wins he has is inflated by comparison because we play more games now. We pick up one Tennessee Tech per year that Donnan didn’t have. Georgia is capable of winning titleS with an S.

UGA DOES NOT have the offensive line to win the east….period. People are too busy trying to overanalyze the situation when it is actually simple: We got our asses kicked up front. Hershel couldn’t run behind this crew. Not hatin’ on the kids (linemen) at all, they just ain’t the caliber to win the SEC. We can get all the skill players, etc. but the hosses up front are where its at. Even a novice can see that we’re weak up there. I love the Dogs, and will continue to be a fan. Its hard to blame Bobo or anyone when the line looks so bad that NOTHING WILL WORK!!!!!!

Rusty,
After the season will be too late in my humble opinion to make the needed change in coaching staffs.
We continue to be beaten by teams with inferior athletes, Colorado, Central Florida, Kentucky, Boise State, AR, Mississsipi State. We might rise up and win a big game this season, but we can no longer compete with FL, Mississipi State, Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas and South Carolina. They have all passed us by. We are back to mid 90’s Georgia football, the Goff Era. We are basically competing with KY for 8th or 9th best in the SEC.
I think Richt is a fantastic person, but we haven’t played a complete game against a decent team since Auburn in 2007. The longer we wait, the deeper our demise and the longer and harder it will be to come out of it.

…. I will pray we run out of the I formation with Figgins out front putting Clowney on his a$$.
…. I will assume our wounded front 7 will be able to control Lattimore(huge but not impossible).
…. I will anticipate some pressure from JJ and company to rattle Garcia and sack him 5 times.
…. I will see Boykin return 1 more to the house(special teams).

You mean the same fans that donate so much money to the athletic association that it is among the richest in the country? The same fans that sell out Sanford Stadium every week at 90,000 plus 1/3 bigger than many NFL stadiums? The same fans that watch on TV by the millions and the same fans that travel to opposing stadiums and bowl games like few other fan bases do?
I don’t condone booing, but the UGA staff and players should thank their lucky stars that they play for a team that is supported like Dawg fans support their team.

It isn’t quittig on the team to want a new staff that can get the most out of their players. This staff clearly can’t.
We didn’t even have working helmets for the opener. That is rec league football.
3 penalties on the opening drive? 60% of the plays were sprint draws up the middle. The change needs to be made on Tuesday win or lose against South Carolina to an interim coach. Delaying the inevitable won’t help turn the program around from its current abysmal state.
Name me one coach in the modern era that turned things around once their seat was this hot. Scheduling the Boise game was a fate sealer. Short of tearing off 5-6 wins… nothing can save him.

There you have it. This is THE problem with our program and our fans. No one demands success. Can you ever imagine an Alabama or Florida fan uttering these words? No! Which is why they win. Back to the ORIGINAL point ya’ll……….even if we improve on the penalties, etc. we have gotten away from real football, which does NOT involve ballerinas ole’ blocking and gettin tired! People used to play both ways (and not in an air-conditioned dome) w/o being that tired! Those Idaho tater-fed boys overpowered UGA so badly and were in so much better shape (apparantly) that we gotta go back to square one! Start where the game starts, both offensively AND defensively UP FRONT!!!!!! All the play calling comments, defensive schemes, etc. are all for naught ’till we get the studs up front!!

Boise State was the better team with a lot of 5th year seniors on their lines with experience. Georgia had two key players out that could have helped. I am a Georgia fan who lives out west and understand fully that Boise State is a power-house football team.
Even though Georgia lost I’m glad they played a top 5 team and didn’t start this year against cream puffs as some of the SEC teams did. I believe that this team is a solid football team and I’m really happy they played hard and didn’t make a ton of mistakes to lose the game , as they did last year.
As far as Coach Richt is concerned I believe the heat goes with the territory and although some fans are downright rude the majority of fans are taking it one game at a time. I would love to see this program turned around quickly during the current year and under this coaching staff.
I must believe that Georgia would be better served if Coach Richt called the plays and returned Coach Bobo to assist Coach Gardner who has not been successful with the O-line and Qb’s.
I am a concerned fan and yes I do remember how long it took Coach Dooley to get things going at Georgia but once he had it going-it was awesome and fun too watch. Maybe Coach Richt should consider speaking with Coach Dooley or Coach Bowden and ask for their observation of the program and what they may add or take away from the current system. The talent is there and it just needs time.
One game at a time, until this train get’s moving at full speed and on all cylinders. Once that happens it’s going to be fun too watch!!
Go Georgia! Coach and staff you have my prayers and belief it will be up-righted and moving in the right direction quicker than many fans can imagine.

Great observation, Jerry, and I wish CMR the best likewise, but other than our center, the talent level up front is not there…..if they max out they won’t be what B.States guys were as 5th year seniors. Whether Bobo or Forest Gump calls the plays we have let our up-front talent level go way down. Our grading/observation system for the line is currently flawed to say the least. You ain’t gonna win SEC football w/o the line….period. We’ll pull out some games, and maybe improve. However, S.C. is fixin’ to teach our line a more bitter lesson than they learned against B.State; the lesson will be that you can’t call a good game (Bobo) if the up-front guys ain’t up to snuff!!!!!!

“I think Richt is a fantastic person, but we haven’t played a complete game against a decent team since Auburn in 2007.”
Auburn 2007 ended up # 15 in the AP Poll. There were a 4-Loss team, who played cupcakes. They were beat by South Florida & Missy State. I am sorry but it has been a lot longer than Auburn 2007 since we played a complete game against really decent team, I-DOG. I know you said decent team, but I am sorry the loss to South Florida, and Auburn was taking it on the chin, 2007. They played, as you recall, a cupcake schedule 2007 full of powderpuff football teams. And, Missy State was not powerhouse Auburn lost to in 2007 too.
I submit, instead, that it has been since beating Auburn 2006 (maybe you meant to say that) since Mark Richt and his “coaching staff” have beat a great team. In 2006, Auburn ended up # 9 in the AP Poll. That’s good. The only problem with that win, however, is that in 2006, Mark Richt ended up the # 5 team in The SEC in the polls because we LOST to 4 teams in 2006, including such horrid losses as losing to a Vandie team who won only 4 games 2006, but they too beat us 2006 (included in their 4-win season.)
I actually go a lot further than that I-DOG. I have said for now the 6th season in a row on these forums that Mark Richt’s “coaching staff” has only beat 3 teams who ended the season in the AP Poll Top 10 – the truly good teams. In 13 games, lost 10, won 3. Of the 3 years we won : 2006 over # 9 Auburn we lost 4 games and ended up the # 5 team in The SEC in the polls, 2005 over # 6 LSU we ended up the # 3 team in The SEC in the poll and lost 3 games, and 2001 we knocked the lid off according to Mark Richt the # 11 all-time college football program in 1-A wins by beating # 4 vols but ended that season again the # 5 team in The SEC in the polls with again 4 losses. All the other 10 games vs teams who ended that season in the AP Poll Top 10, Mark Richt and his “coaching staff” lost. We have NOT beat the top teams. We have lost 16 games in 11 years to-date to teams who would not have finished in the AP Poll Top 25 without their win over us and 10 of those 16 did not still even with their win over us.
We don’t beat the great teams.
We lose to the really sorry teams.
We have done this the entire 11 years.

Boise was rated #5 in the country! Georgia doesn’t have their talent—it’s not fair to criticize the Ga coaches for not winning that game. Boise is a lot better and has better players—not much Ga could do against a high quality team like that. SC is not nearly as good as boise and Ga can beat them.

2) I don’t see what the issue is as far as any kind of reality,. I don’t even know what’s swirling around. NO
CLUELESS RICHT DOES NOT EVEN KNOW HIS JOB IS ON THE LINE THIS YEAR—-THE PLAYERS KNOW
3) Everybody says there’s stuff swirling around. I usually find about it if my mom calls or I go to church and everybody says they’re praying extra hard for me. That’s when I know it’s out there.” NO

AFTER HE IS FIRED, I DON’T THINK YOU WILL SEE RICHT AS THE HEAD COACH ANYWHERE, MAYBE AN OFFENSIVE COODINATOR OR QB COACH.

I’ve been saying for years that Rodney Garner needs to be replaced. The overall team make-up is screwed up. We don’t have a good balance of brains, brawn and speed. You can’t win with speed, alone. We desperately need players like David Pollack, Terry Hoage, Kirby Smart, Will Muschamp, Richard Tardits etc. on our D. Guys that can calm down the athletes and keep their heads in the game when things start going bad.

“I think Richt is a fantastic person, but we haven’t played a complete game against a decent team since Auburn in 2007.”
Auburn 2007 ended up # 15 in the AP Poll. They were a 4-Loss team, who played cupcakes. They were beat by South Florida & Missy State – neither of whom was worth a crud 2007. I am sorry but it has been a lot longer than Auburn 2007 since we played a complete game against really decent team, I-DOG. I know you said decent team, but I am sorry the loss to South Florida, and Auburn was taking it on the chin, 2007 Auburn; so, I don’t consider Auburn then worth a hoot 2007 and neither does anyone else. Auburn played, as you recall, a cupcake schedule 2007 full of powder-puff football teams. Auburn is criticized for this schedule and docked for this schedule. And, Missy State was not powerhouse Auburn lost to in 2007 too, along with a below average South Florida obviously, both of whom beat Auburn 2007.
In 13 games vs teams who actually ended in the Top 10 (not ranked # 9 week 2 when we beat them and then ended unranked), – in 13 games vs teams finishing in the Top 10 AP Poll Mark Richt has lost 10, won 3. Of the 3 years we won : 2006 over # 9 Auburn we lost 4 games and ended up the # 5 team in The SEC in the polls, 2005 over # 6 LSU we ended up the # 3 team in The SEC in the poll and lost 3 games, and 2001 we knocked the lid off according to Mark Richt of the # 11 all-time college football program in 1-A wins by beating # 4 vols but ended that season again the # 5 team in The SEC in the polls with again 4 losses. All the other 10 games vs teams who ended that season in the AP Poll Top 10, Mark Richt and his “coaching staff” lost. We have NOT beat the top teams. We have lost 16 games in 11 years to-date to teams who would not have finished in the AP Poll Top 25 without their win over us and 10 of those 16 did not still even with their win over us end up in the AP Poll Top 25.
We don’t beat the great teams.
We lose to the really sorry teams.
We have done this the entire 11 years.
We have NO HOPE of fixing this. Mark Richt is a bold-faced liar that he is the # 4 best college football coach in all of America. Hogwash. Drink the Kool-Aid. Watch. Study the results. BS And, by the way, I am fed up with it, and I am the orIginal poster who has called the RICHT-0-FILES the DISNEYdawgs.com all this Summer, all last Summer, all the Summer before that, all the Summer before that, all the Summer before that and all the Summer before that,

“One damn game and you would think we are talking about a 2-10 coached team. Pathetic is the way Dawg Nation has turned on the staff and now the media is fueling the fire. I will support this team 100% all season and then let th eguys who get paid to make those decisions make whatever they deem necessary. Until then I support Mark Richt and this staff. Some of you need a reality check of what it means to be a Bulldog supporter.”
Please oh great and wondrous one
Lowcountry Bulldawg,
Share with us all what it means to be a Bulldog support ? Does it mean posting as you just did, sir, that you think at the end of the season they guys who make these decisions, should sit down according to you right here in this post, and make that decision ?
What does that sound like ?
Like you are WIMP of the highest order. A Kool-Aid drinker. A DISNEYdawgs.com but hey you think they need to be sat down and make the decision too at the end of the season. My heavens, what is the difference in that and the other 83 percent of ALL UGA fans that we have NO HOPE of beating South Carolina, either, the day after tomorrow ?
Other than we should do as you SAY and not as you DEMONSTRATE once again in THIS POST, right here

ya marlon was limping after his 2nd catch during the ballgame on SAT. I wondered this week if he would be up to playing but it looks unlikely.. we need a big guy to throw to in the redzone
