MONDAY MORNING REWIND
Happy Labor Day everyone. Glad to see some rain coming our way. God knows we need it.
Not sure how much it will help the Georgia Bulldogs, however. After watching Saturday night’s debacle against Boise State, it’s clear they need all the practice they can get before No. 12 South Carolina comes rolling into Athens next weekend. The last thing they need is a bunch of thunderstorms to chase them inside.
Welcome to the “Monday Morning Rewind.” This will be regular feature during the season. It’s nothing fancy, just a forum to make sure you get a chance to see everything we’ve got on football coverage. We’ll offer some fresh news, notes and quotes along with links to the latest versions of stories we’ve written over the weekend and a few from elsewhere. So let’s get to it. . . .
THE MAIN THING
Head coach Mark Richt held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. As expected, the news was not good on linebacker Alec Ogletree: Broken foot, surgery on Monday, out four to six weeks.
My story for print was on this development and how it affects Georgia’s attempts to contain South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore this time around. I also do a formatted review/preview box called “UGA Rewind” for the print section every Monday. Click HERE to check it out.
I wasn’t able to fit in this comment from Richt about Ogletree, who had been one of the Bulldogs’ stars in preseason camp:
“I’ve texted him a little bit but did not talk to him today. His family is in town in preparation for the surgery tomorrow. I’m sure he’s hurt. He’s crushed right now because he loves to play the game and he was really playing outstanding football . He played inspired football and our defense really came out ready to play and had a lot of great energy and enthusiasm and had a lot of big hits early on. He was a big part of that.”
Ogletree reached out to Georgia fans via Facebook on Sunday night:
“Thanks for all the support from everyone. I will continue to fight and get well. As for the team we are on a mission and it is about to begin. God has a plan for us so lets keep working hard and show up next week when the cocks roll in.” #9
FIVE MORE THINGS
1. Richt isn’t planning any changes in the tailback rotation for the South Carolina game. That is, junior Richard Samuel will again get the start over freshman Isaiah Crowell, who was clearly the better runner with 60 yards on 15 carries (4.0 average). Samuel had 12 yards on seven carries but apparently was better with other aspects of playing the position.
“Probably not,” Richt said to changing starters. “But we’ll keep competing and keep getting better. There’s some things understandably that Isaiah has to get better at in the protection area., just knowing who to block and how to get it done. I thought he was eager to block and he did make some very nice blocks. There were a couople of times he missed an assignment here or there. But Richard needs reps, too. He didn’t practice a lot at the end [of preseason camp]. A linebacker blitzed a couple of times while we were blocking them with the tailback position and they didn’t make the sack but we weren’t really outstanding in our protection fundamentals. We’ve just got to keep working at it.”
Junior Carlton Thomas returns this week as well. Thomas, Georgia’s third-string tailback last season, missed the opener due to a disciplinary suspension.
2. Bacarri Rambo, as Richt confirmed AFTER Saturday’s game, was indeed suspended after all. And Richt speculated that the junior from Donalsonville, probably would return to the starting lineup at free safety. He started all 13 games there last season.
“Yeah, I think we would” Richt said of Rambo starting. “I say that but I guess I shouldn’t be premature on that. I’d have to talk to Coach [Scott] Lakatose and see if it’s a slam dunk. But Bacarri’s going to play, that’s for sure.”
3. Richt expects starting left guard Kenarious Gates to return this week from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the entire second half against Boise. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, the only other lineman with previous game experience, filled in admirably in Gates’ absence and will continue to play a big role.
4. Richt wasn’t necessarily anticipating a lineup change at split end, where junior Tavarres King struggled on Saturday. King, expected to be the Bulldogs’ main target among wideouts, dropped two passes and finished with one catch for three yards.
“The bottom like is we’ve still got a lot of faith in Tavarres,” Richt said. “But everybody at that position especially is talented and we think can make plays. So we’re going to compete and see who’s going to start. But all those guys are going to play and we just need to let them play. ”
Richt praised freshman Malcolm Mitchell, who finished with 64 yards on three catches and scored on 51-yard catch-and-run. He said they’ll continue look to get him the football.
5. Richt was still majorly annoyed with the play of the offensive line, which allowed six quarterback sacks and even more hurries and pressures. They didn’t run block particularly well either, all of which helped them to a 2-for-13 third-down conversion rate.
“Third down is your position down,” he said. “That’s where you’ve got to make your first downs and keep your drives going and put yourself in field goal range or give yourself a chance to score touchdowns. I just felt like we didn’t do a good job in that area. Even when got the ball off I still thought he was getting there were a lot of times people were breathing down his neck and hitting him after he cut the ball loose. . . . We’ve got to get better. . . . If you look at it from an overall offensive point of view, that was probably the thing that was the most troublesome to me.”
FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier also held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. The Gamecocks — after trailing 17-0 early — defeated East Carolina 56-37 in their opener played in Charlotte. Gainesville’s Connor Shaw started the game at quarterback but was relieved by the often-troubled-but-never-sidelined Stephen Garcia, who rallied them to victory.
Spurrier was pretty funny when asked Sunday about Richt’s well-being in light of Georgia losing 13 of its last 27 games.
“You know, I’ve got enough problems down here. I don’t think Coach Richt needs me to worry about him. I was worried about my job at halftime last night. How about that?”
Spurrier resisted any urge he might have had to needle Georgia for losing to Boise State 35-21.
“Georgia is still a very good team,” he said. “They just didn’t play their best. It wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t favored over us this week. They are a very good team. They are very capable of doing some big things this year.”
Spurrier was more impressed with Boise State and their Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Kellen Moore.
“That quarterback is very good. He throws that ball like he’s got a baseball in his hand. He’s got a real quick release and he just flicks it here and flicks it there. He knows where everybody is. He’s hard to sack. He’s just really a good player. You just have to admire watching those guys play. I love watching them play because they block, they tackle well, they play fundamentals, they are just about always in position, they don’t do stupid things. They just play the game the way you are supposed to. I may vote them No. 1 in the country after watching them beat Georgia . . . Maybe after watching Boise Staet play all week will allow our guys to see how you’re supposed to play this game.”
Here’s a game story in the Anderson Independent that provides some details on the Gamecocks’ win over East Carolina.
COMPLETE GAME WRAPUP
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
A reminder that these players are tuned in to what people say and write about them. Here is a message sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones posted on Facebook on Sunday:
“As I read some of the sport blogs, I see a many of the so-called Bulldawg fan comments. A lot of you all are some of the most un-loyal fans I’ve ever witnessed. If you want to trash us, don’t support us. Those who are loyal and willing to fight to the end with us will, we’re thankful for them. This from the heart. I dont care if you dont like it or me. My team is very passionate about what we do and we’re going to continue to fight.” — JJ #29

LOL, dawg fans are so predictable. I predicted all this “fire richt” talk last week.
You guys were talking about firing Richt just 8 months ago, then got suckered into the “dream team” talk, and all in a sudden, UGA was gonna beat Boise State?!?!? LOL. So delusional.
I knew BSU would win. UGA lost AJ Green, lost all their RBs, replaced them with a freshman. How would they improve over last year? Remember the games last year without AJ Green? scary bad.
Personally, I like richt, keep him. The world needs underachievers to help define the overachievers.

How much money has UGA wasted on the new defensive co-ordinator. The defense stunk last year and it appears this year will be just as bad. The Dawgs no longer know how to win.

Since CMR and BoBo need to “study some more football”, study the tape of how the San Diego Chargers and N.O. Saints use Drew Brees, only Murray is A LOT more mobile and athletic. Murray is at his best when he has one or two options and just takes off. How about using a damn fullback for blocking and tough runs instead of flare outs and dump passes. Don’t we have like 4 TE’s that every team in the nation would love to have? USE THEM. STOP throwing flare passes to a 6′5 Marlon Brown behind the line of scrimmage when he should just run a crossing route in the middle of the field. STOP using the TE seam down the hash to O. Charles. It’s the go to play and everybody knows it. He is doubled every time that play is called. STOP PLAYING THE SOFT ZONE. We have been doing that since BVG, and it has caught up to us. However, I suspect we played zone because the players were….”TIRED.” Which means on a team of 85 scholarship players and and additional walk ons, there is no “on the field” depth. A walk on will compete for a starting nod in the 2nd week of the season? PATHETIC

My point exactly
And Marlon Brown has been grossly underutilized. I keep hearing he needs to step up. Really! Well someone needs to throw to him more and he might step up then
He has done just fine when thrown to

Wanted to puke after the UCF game, but we reached a new low Sat night. Out coached after the coin flip when we took the ball. All we heard all Summer was how much better conditioned we were and how much stronger the team would be. Give the defense credit, they played great until Ogletree was injured. The fact that we had no quality backups speaks volumes to the coaches evaluating the talent. How much longer do we stay in the 3-4 defense without the right players. Watched the smaller center knock our nose down too many times. We try to run the no-huddle and Murray continually looked to the sideline for changes? Strength of the team is TE, yet we threw to White one time? This team still lacks discipline and yet Richt says no changes will be made? We got beat by the better team, but that still doesn’t excuse the penalties, confusion on defense, or the chest bumping when we were down by 21 points in the second half.

Yes, McGarity worked at Florida for 17 years but you really do know that he is a UGA graduate
and lettered in tennis. He also worked in the UGA athletic for severals years before he was hired
by the Gators.
I predict he will let Richt go after he loses big to Miss. State at home. McGarity is the best to happen to Georgia in years, we are lucky to have him.

If a head football coach knows one of his players is tweeting the opposing team/head coach, talking smack to them, and not only does nothing about it but says he has his back…if a head coach comes out of a game where his team was dominated in every facet possible, and giggles during the press conference…if a head coach says he doesn’t plan on making any personnel changes before the next game, after seeing some players perform better than others…a football program needs to reassess it’s direction and decide whether they have the right head coach running their team.

Got some harsh words for JJ so you may have to look Mr. Jones. Why are you reading sports blogs about this, you should be busy prepping for Lattimore and how to stop him and Garcia.
On top of that you committed to USC over UGA and only came back when you got injured. Hell if they allowed you to keep playing you would have still stayed out in Cali.
BS aside, I give full credit and impressed by your play against Boise.

I hope McGarity is starting to search for someone who can turn this sinking ship around. Losing is now becoming the culture at UGA. All other SEC teams are getting better, UGA is the only team going backwards. Auburn is rebuilding but nobody hyped them up to be good like the preseason UGA hype we were hearing here.

This article in the Idaho Statesman pretty much says it all:
To hear the Boise State Broncos talk afterward, you’d think this was no big deal.
Ho-hum, they beat a Southeastern Conference power.
Except, the Broncos have never done this before.
The program that keeps breaking new ground handled No. 19 Georgia 35-21 on Saturday night at the jam-packed, red-filled Georgia Dome — punching another hole in the skeptics’ argument against the Broncos being a national power.
“They’ve got a bunch of well-coached, great athletes who just played a great game,” Georgia sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray said.
The No. 5 Broncos dominated the showdown from the middle of the second quarter to the second-to-last play, when defensive end Jarrell Root buried Murray on his own 3-yard line with a few ticks left.
The Broncos were 0-4 against the SEC previously, including an embarrassing 48-13 loss to the Bulldogs in 2005 in Athens.
“It means a lot to us,” said coach Chris Petersen, who is 7-1 against BCS-conference teams and 62-5 overall in six seasons. “We have tremendous respect for the conference and Georgia. Last time we were down here it wasn’t even a game. It’s something these kids will be very proud of.”
And yet, Petersen quickly reminded his players that they don’t have time to thoroughly celebrate this success.
Players already are talking about their Sept. 16 game at Toledo.
“It means that we got a W, but we’ve got to focus on Toledo next week, so we’re going to throw this behind us,” senior tailback Doug Martin said. “We’ll celebrate for a little bit, but come Monday it’s back to practice.”
The Broncos seized control of the game late in the first quarter when they went to their no-huddle offense. Senior quarterback Kellen Moore, protected by a youthful offensive line, started discovering gaping holes in the Bulldogs’ zone defense.
He hit redshirt freshman wide receiver Matt Miller for a 17-yard touchdown in the first quarter and senior tight end Kyle Efaw for a 12-yard score with 48 seconds left in the first half to take a 14-7 lead.
The Broncos made it 21-7 on the opening drive of the second half as Moore hit all seven of his passes for 69 yards, using five different wide receivers.
The Broncos snapped the ball so fast at times that the Bulldogs weren’t even getting set and at least once called a timeout to catch up.
“We were a little more in shape than they were, so our hurry-up offense really had an effect,” said Martin, who rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown.
The change of pace also seemed to spark the offensive execution, which had been spotty early in the game.
Moore finished 28-of-34 for 261 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and no sacks.
“It’s hard to come out of the gate in a real good rhythm,” Petersen said. “Practice is so darned different. He’s got some new receivers he’s working with. We knew it’d be a while. I’m just glad we got it going in the second quarter.”
Moore completed passes to nine different wide receivers in the game. Efaw made six catches for 53 yards and a touchdown and Miller and junior wide receiver Mitch Burroughs added five catches each.
Moore’s third TD, a 3-yarder to senior wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker, gave the Broncos a 28-7 lead late in the third quarter. The Broncos’ run game did the rest — tailback D.J. Harper led a scoring drive that made it 35-14 in the fourth and Martin milked the clock on the next drive.
Meanwhile, the renowned defensive line dominated. The group contributed 5.5 of the team’s six sacks and gave the Bulldogs’ tailbacks fits. Senior defensive end Shea McClellin stuffed a fourth-and-1 play and recorded 2.5 sacks.
Senior cornerback Jerrell Gavins added an interception and junior punt returner Chris Potter provided a 49-yard punt return — both of which set up touchdowns.
Some Georgia fans in the crowd of 73,614 began leaving in the third quarter. They grumbled as Moore dissected the defense.
“They protected (Moore) well,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “We didn’t get enough pressure on him. But when you run and pass well, it’s hard to get that rush.”
The Broncos collected The Old Leather Helmet Trophy for their victory — fitting for a team that prides itself on an old-school, blue-collar attitude.
A couple players even donned the helmet.
That was as close to giddy as they got.
The players say their preparation — in practice and in offseason workouts — led to confidence.
“It just shows what type of football program we are,” Burroughs said. “Not a lot of talk. We’re going to work hard and then we’re going to come in and play our type of game.
“It doesn’t stop here.”
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!! How’s that crow taste UGA fans, talked so much smack up till the game, BSU can’t hang with the big boys, etc. etc. etc. Now you’re making excuses, our kids conditioned on their own all summer long and were in better overall shape than your boys, guess it comes down to who wants it more and who’s better coached. Good luck with the rest of your year smack talkers! Shouldn’t talk smack till after the games over….HA HA HA HA!!!!!

Come on, give Boise State the credit they deserve. They were and are a vastly superior team and would beat UGA nine times out of ten. Boise State MADE the Bulldogs look bad and USC could likely do the same thing, but the game still has to be played and anything can happen. The season is not over as the last time I checked there are eleven more games to play. Any possible coaching change will depend on the record this year so enough clamoring to fire CMR and staff now!

After Spurrier and his offense drop half a hundred on the dogs in Athens ,he should have the class to resign. Typical Richt. I wanted to believe this season and tried so hard to believe in all they were projecting outside of preseason camp. Honest truth is, if the fans can’t believe it, the players won’t either. With that poor shoing on Saturday, the fans don’t believe anymore..
Sure, Sanford will be packed Saturday against SC, but who that attends the game will honestly go without doubt about what will happen? We as a fan base will cheer as hard as we can, until things begin going sour, because WE, as a fan base, have gotten used to bad play calling, bad coaching, bad team management, bad team morale, bad game-day preparation. And as much as I’ve supported Richt the past few years, I will say that this is the last chance for you to show what you got..
If you can’t take over offensive play calls like you did the first 5 years of your tenure before hiring BoZo as your OC, then you’ll see the outcome. I argued with a few friends about the 3rd & 16 call with a draw play against Boise during the game. We were only down 3 scores and you do that?? Typical BoZo..
Regardless..the SC game is the last straw for me. I have faith that the Dawgs will be focused and prepared for the game because they have something to prove, and they’ve been talking a lot in the offseason about “Dream Team” recruits, senior O-Linemen, a defense in it’s second year, etc..but to Jarvis Jones, if you read this, you need to understand how the fan base is upset right now. Noty degrade us as being “fairweather fans” etc based on blog posts. This has been going on well before you went to USC and snubbed UGA in the first place buddy..
I have all the faith in the Dawgs to beat South Carolina..especially after that embarrassment on Saturday. But at this point, should I expect them to beat USC? No..I shouldn’t..
