Rewind: Richt says Dogs likely to stick with TB rotation of Samuel, then Crowell

MONDAY MORNING REWIND

Happy Labor Day everyone. Glad to see some rain coming our way. God knows we need it.

Not sure how much it will help the Georgia Bulldogs, however. After watching Saturday night’s debacle against Boise State, it’s clear they need all the practice they can get before No. 12 South Carolina comes rolling into Athens next weekend. The last thing they need is a bunch of thunderstorms to chase them inside.

Welcome to the “Monday Morning Rewind.” This will be regular feature during the season. It’s nothing fancy, just a forum to make sure you get a chance to see everything we’ve got on football coverage. We’ll offer some fresh news, notes and quotes along with links to the latest versions of stories we’ve written over the weekend and a few from elsewhere. So let’s get to it. . . .

THE MAIN THING

Head coach Mark Richt held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. As expected, the news was not good on linebacker Alec Ogletree: Broken foot, surgery on Monday, out four to six weeks.

My story for print was on this development and how it affects Georgia’s attempts to contain South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore this time around. I also do a formatted review/preview box called “UGA Rewind” for the print section every Monday. Click HERE to check it out.

I wasn’t able to fit in this comment from Richt about Ogletree, who had been one of the Bulldogs’ stars in preseason camp:

“I’ve texted him a little bit but did not talk to him today. His family is in town in preparation for the surgery tomorrow. I’m sure he’s hurt. He’s crushed right now because he loves to play the game and he was really playing outstanding football . He played inspired football and our defense really came out ready to play and had a lot of great energy and enthusiasm and had a lot of big hits early on. He was a big part of that.”

Ogletree reached out to Georgia fans via Facebook on Sunday night:

“Thanks for all the support from everyone. I will continue to fight and get well. As for the team we are on a mission and it is about to begin. God has a plan for us so lets keep working hard and show up next week when the cocks roll in.” #9

FIVE MORE THINGS

1. Richt isn’t planning any changes in the tailback rotation for the South Carolina game. That is, junior Richard Samuel will again get the start over freshman Isaiah Crowell, who was clearly the better runner with 60 yards on 15 carries (4.0 average). Samuel had 12 yards on seven carries but apparently was better with other aspects of playing the position.

“Probably not,” Richt said to changing starters. “But we’ll keep competing and keep getting better. There’s some things understandably that Isaiah has to get better at in the protection area., just knowing who to block and how to get it done. I thought he was eager to block and he did make some very nice blocks. There were a couople of times he missed an assignment here or there. But Richard needs reps, too. He didn’t practice a lot at the end [of preseason camp]. A linebacker blitzed a couple of times while we were blocking them with the tailback position and they didn’t make the sack but we weren’t really outstanding in our protection fundamentals. We’ve just got to keep working at it.”

Junior Carlton Thomas returns this week as well. Thomas, Georgia’s third-string tailback last season, missed the opener due to a disciplinary suspension.

2. Bacarri Rambo, as Richt confirmed AFTER Saturday’s game, was indeed suspended after all. And Richt speculated that the junior from Donalsonville, probably would return to the starting lineup at free safety. He started all 13 games there last season.

“Yeah, I think we would” Richt said of Rambo starting. “I say that but I guess I shouldn’t be premature on that. I’d have to talk to Coach [Scott] Lakatose and see if it’s a slam dunk. But Bacarri’s going to play, that’s for sure.”

3. Richt expects starting left guard Kenarious Gates to return this week from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the entire second half against Boise. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, the only other lineman with previous game experience, filled in admirably in Gates’ absence and will continue to play a big role.

4. Richt wasn’t necessarily anticipating a lineup change at split end, where junior Tavarres King struggled on Saturday. King, expected to be the Bulldogs’ main target among wideouts, dropped two passes and finished with one catch for three yards.

“The bottom like is we’ve still got a lot of faith in Tavarres,” Richt said. “But everybody at that position especially is talented and we think can make plays. So we’re going to compete and see who’s going to start. But all those guys are going to play and we just need to let them play. ”

Richt praised freshman Malcolm Mitchell, who finished with 64 yards on three catches and scored on 51-yard catch-and-run. He said they’ll continue look to get him the football.

5. Richt was still majorly annoyed with the play of the offensive line, which allowed six quarterback sacks and even more hurries and pressures. They didn’t run block particularly well either, all of which helped them to a 2-for-13 third-down conversion rate.

“Third down is your position down,” he said. “That’s where you’ve got to make your first downs and keep your drives going and put yourself in field goal range or give yourself a chance to score touchdowns. I just felt like we didn’t do a good job in that area. Even when got the ball off I still thought he was getting there were a lot of times people were breathing down his neck and hitting him after he cut the ball loose. . . . We’ve got to get better. . . . If you look at it from an overall offensive point of view, that was probably the thing that was the most troublesome to me.”

FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier also held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. The Gamecocks — after trailing 17-0 early — defeated East Carolina 56-37 in their opener played in Charlotte. Gainesville’s Connor Shaw started the game at quarterback but was relieved by the often-troubled-but-never-sidelined Stephen Garcia, who rallied them to victory.

Spurrier was pretty funny when asked Sunday about Richt’s well-being in light of Georgia losing 13 of its last 27 games.

“You know, I’ve got enough problems down here. I don’t think Coach Richt needs me to worry about him. I was worried about my job at halftime last night. How about that?”

Spurrier resisted any urge he might have had to needle Georgia for losing to Boise State 35-21.

“Georgia is still a very good team,” he said. “They just didn’t play their best. It wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t favored over us this week. They are a very good team. They are very capable of doing some big things this year.”

Spurrier was more impressed with Boise State and their Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Kellen Moore.

“That quarterback is very good. He throws that ball like he’s got a baseball in his hand. He’s got a real quick release and he just flicks it here and flicks it there. He knows where everybody is. He’s hard to sack. He’s just really a good player. You just have to admire watching those guys play. I love watching them play because they block, they tackle well, they play fundamentals, they are just about always in position, they don’t do stupid things. They just play the game the way you are supposed to. I may vote them No. 1 in the country after watching them beat Georgia . . . Maybe after watching Boise Staet play all week will allow our guys to see how you’re supposed to play this game.”

Here’s a game story in the Anderson Independent that provides some details on the Gamecocks’ win over East Carolina.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

A reminder that these players are tuned in to what people say and write about them. Here is a message sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones posted on Facebook on Sunday:

“As I read some of the sport blogs, I see a many of the so-called Bulldawg fan comments. A lot of you all are some of the most un-loyal fans I’ve ever witnessed. If you want to trash us, don’t support us. Those who are loyal and willing to fight to the end with us will, we’re thankful for them. This from the heart. I dont care if you dont like it or me. My team is very passionate about what we do and we’re going to continue to fight.” — JJ #29

One can still be upset and still be a UGA fan.
First of all I saw nothing that gave us any hope for the future saturday night. Everything was bad. A lot was real bad.
Richard Samuel has got to be the worst running back i have ever seen. Why we moved him is beyond me. Crowell showed absolutely nothing to be positive about. Murray looked like a freshman. The line was pittiful.
The team was out of shape. Assignments were missed all over the place.
The Defense was as bad as i have ever seen. The secondary went back to arm tackling after the first quarter. Bobo has got to be the worst coordinator i have ever seen. Who runs the ball straight up the gut 3 and 4 times in a row and then runs outside with samuel instead of crowell. Crowell is the speedster and did not get any plays that were set up for a sweep to utilize his speed. oh did i say how bad bobo was…geez he is the worst. i love coach richt but the state of the program revealed itself saturday night. we were out coached, out played. they were in better shape ran better assignments and just man handled us.
as far as saturday against south carolina. i say
south carolina 32 UGA 21
UGA may not win 5 games this year. We are that bad.

I side with the camp that this team is broken and cannot be fixed by mark richt. And this is a three year pattern and not ” one game”. However, I think the fanbase should not turn on each other and everyone should support the team. But if this downward trend continues the fans who are loyal to Richt are going to have to wake up and realize a change at the top is needed. I will be cheering hard for my dogs to win saturday and the rest of the season. Unfortunately, I don’t think things are going to get better but I am hopeful nonetheless.

Flat Tire,

Let the season play out. This will work itself out one way or the other. That is my point. It is 1 game in. If the thing goes sideways then changes will be made. Until then show the support the team needs.

Doug,

See ya, we hardly knew ya!

Dawgfan,

Moore was going to get his yardage and stats regardless. You really thought we would shut this cat down? Really? The offense is what failed the defense by not establishing any drives of consquence and allowing BSU pretty good field posiiton all night to be super aggressive in there offense.

This little snipet from College Football News says it all:

“Georgia came into its matchup with Boise State at the Georgia Dome on Saturday evening with a lot to prove. But sadly for them, the only thing the Bulldogs proved is that they’re the “same ole Georgia.”

Offensive line problems? Check. Suspect pass defense? Check. Running backs that are over-hyped and under-perform? Check. Stubbornness to adjust to the defense and be creative with the offensive gameplan? Big time check. Overall lack of heart? Checkmate.

The departure of running backs Caleb King and Washaun Ealey was really big on Saturday night, because Richard Samuel and Isaiah Crowell clearly aren’t ready to be every-down running backs. In Brandon Boykin’s first play ever on offense, he took it 80 yards for a touchdown. He didn’t touch the ball again. Hello? Mike Bobo? Are you even in the booth???

If you enjoy meltdowns, tune in to 680 The Fan or 790 The Zone in Atlanta this week, because they’re going to be legendary. The game against Boise State was by no means a defining game for Mark Richt and Co., but it is a strong indicator of where the program stands, and it’s a dark, dark place.”

If you’re a Georgia fan, pull for the team, get some class and shut up. It seems like no one is willing to admit that Boise is every bit as good as their ranking suggests. Georgia might turn out to be the team to beat in the SEC East. We’ll see this Saturday. I for one hope they kick SC’s butt.

I can’t wait for the “real” fans to explain away next Saturday’s defeat. I’m sure it will still be too early in the season to draw any conclusions. For me, the program’s slide began with Slick Willie’s defense embarrassing us against WVU. This whole mess is directly related to Richt’s ineptness at evaluating coaches and himslef. But the “real” fans think we’ll get a different outcome by doing the same old things over and over again and by running off over half the fan base.

Bottom line JB is that we have got to make changes. They had a year, to recruit, rebuild, hire expert coaching and train a youg team to be the Bulldogs we know we should see on the field. Just because we want changes doesn’t mean that we are not pulling for each player and each play. We need a coach that can inspire, be tough and take no poor performance for an excuse of, well they are young, they are rebuilding. Even thought I truly dislike the guy, a certain SC Coach has done just that. We need another Dooley!

Flat tire on I-95…you are whining @11:56 am…..All you say is I need to tell the coaches what not to do…We all know what did not work Saturday night…It was painfully obvious.—that is Monday morning QB at its best….A 5th grader can tell me what did not work.

I wanted to see if you could make insightful comments and have an intelligent exchange—Like let’s try to see if you can us some new plays that will work or things that the players can do to get better….that is more interesting than whinning.

My belief is that for UGA to get better–the problems have to be dissected. The pathophysiology of UGA’s problems at the cellular level…It goes back to practice…I bet that Coach Peterson is doing things better a the cellular level than we are…It starts at the most basic things–For instance I don’t think we are running enough…I bet Boise players are running extra on their own…they were just better conditioned for instance….Come on –think.

Oh ye of little faith! The Dawgs were just whipped by a superior football team but that doesn’t mean the Dawgs are an awful team lead by inferior coaching. Last year Virginia Tec also endured the sting of defeat at the hands of Kellon Moore and the Broncos. They were so stung they lost the next game too. But, the Hokies pulled themselves together and won their remaining games and their conference. They also went on to win a major bowl game. Georgia should follow the example of Virginia Tec and pull themselves together in order to win their remaining games and stop scapegoating their coaches and players. Man up Georgia!

Hey UGA Offensive Line: do you have a football soul? Do you have a burning desire to play this sacred game? Judging by your performance on Saturday night you do not! Period! You’ve had all Winter, all Spring and all Summer to lift weights, build chemistry, study Boise’s D line etc….. The result Saturday night was horrific and embarrassing. You got OWNED by Boise State’s D line in the GA Dome. Their D line is comprised of a bunch of dudes that would never even get a letter of interest in the mail from UGA. The national media has even taken notice of your pathetic performance. Good luck against the SC D line on Saturday. You’re not careful, you will get Crowell and Murray killed.

JJ, Guess UGA football can’t be on ESP anymore because the announcers Sat kept pointing out the poor execution by UGA and the blowout in the trenches by smaller, quicker, better trained BSU linemen.. JJ, with your thin skin I suggest that you not watch any more replays of TV coverage because the announcers are trained analysts who are not going to give you guys any ole rah–rah– our team win or lose bull. BTW, did anyone ever hear CMR have one kind thing to say about Chris Durham, who the scout defense safeties had tremendous respect for? All that ever came out of his mouth was AJ this and AJ that even when Chris performed so well last year.

Um I made pretty much the same insightful comments that everyone including ESPN has made
and that is when is UGA going to stop being predictable

Like I stated, running up the middle for no gains and continuing to do so
Passes over to the sidelines for hardly no gains

Is predictable and thats why this offense went no where

We did do something when we ran the trick play to Boykin but did we see anymore trick plays nope

Just the same ol run up the middle, sideline pass and a deep ball pass,

Thats dissecting what went on OK

Not I think we need to run more LOL really. I think the defense ran enough because the offense was on the field for about 30 seconds

And you want to talk about Chris Peterson doing things better yea its called changing up the play book in the middle of the game not running more in practice

When Peterson saw they werent doing well throwing the deep ball what did he do he made changes and went to throwing crossing patterns and kept on because WE DIDNT MAKE ADJUSTMENTS LIKE CHRIS PETERSON DOES!!!!!!!

Again come up with something else than Im whining or we need to run more give me a break.

has got to be quick stuff……We gotta get a running game….I would like to see Marshall coming in with some Wild Dawg plays—would about you ??

As far as the running goes—donot think that we are in good enough shape….one of the Boise players RB mentioned it as well that we were gassed when they went no huddle. Not a whole lot to say. from my perspective Georgia just took a physical whipping from a team with inferior athletes. When Boise lines up a 5′11 280 lb center against a 6′6 350 lb Georgia Nose guard then you would think UGA would win that battle. It did not. Same with when Georgia’s massive O-line went up against Boise’s small D-line which included a 6′1 290 lb D-tackle. Boise sacked Murry six times and never even blitzed. They just brought their regular 4 man rush and dominated.

And having to call a defensive timeout 3 minutes into the 3rd qtr because the defense is worn out? That’s just bad. Looks to me like Georgia went backwards and not forwards in its strength and conditioning program. The 1st qtr the dogs looked fresh and were trading blows with Boise. But starting in the 2nd qtr Boise simply wore down the dawgs and looked like a vastly better conditioned football team. Lotta work to do for the dawgs.

And here is another thing: No need to suggest plays or doing anything different. Why? This is CMR’s offense. Check ANY TAPE going back 15 years. Although every single team in football above High School runs crossing routes, it’s non-existent in CMR’s playbook. They just have to get better at execute whatever the hell they have been doing for 10 years. The problem: Everybody else got better, made adjustments to their program, and we settled on having a good “Christian ” man as coach. Hog wash. So what is Saban then, the devil? He attends Sunday church, every Sunday, with either his players or recruits. Maybe if CMR takes the UNC job, his scheme may work better.

After watching Boise State beat us Saturday night I was like a small child waking up on Christmas morning and seeing nothing under the Christmas tree. The Grinch turned out to be Boise State. I was mad and upset about the game just like everybody but the sun came up Sunday morning just like always and I realized that the fate of the world and the universe did not hinge on the outcome of a football game. We can all sit back and second guess the coaches and players but it is not going to change a damned thing. The one mistake that was made was playing this game in the first place. We were not ready to play a team the caliber of Boise State. As the old saying goes dont put all your eggs in one basket. That is what we as fans have done because we made this game seem like it would make or break our season. We still have a lot of things on the team that have to be done to compete with teams like Boise State. We as fans have to realize that the game of college football has changed and we are not entitled to win a game just because we are UGA. Whenever you build a house the most important thing to do is make sure that you have a strong foundation under it. I think that when coach Richt took over the team he was under a lot of pressure to win in a hurry. The fans and media have to give him some time to put a strong foundation under the program if we are to ever get to the level that we want to compete at. I challenge the players and coaching staff to go out and show improvement this week and every game afterward. Use the loss Saturday night to make you stronger instead of letting it tear you apart as a team. There are peaks and valleys in life and if you stay down in the valley you will never see what it is like to be at the top of the peak. We as fans need to give these young men our support win or lose. I love the Dogs as much as any of you and I guess that is why it hurts so much to go through the valleys instead of being on the peak looking down. There is a lot of games left to be played in this season. We lost a battle but the war is not over yet. I challenge the players and the coaching staff to come out against S.C. and show us that you are strong in your heart and not let one game ruin the season. I challenge all of you as true fans to still support this team throughout the rest of this season because if you love this team and program your love should be unconditional. We will fight with ourselves after we are through with the season. If we support the team and program it can only make them fight harder every week. Maybe by the end of the season we will get a second chance to play Boise State in a bowl game and we will be older and wiser and better as a team and get a chance to redeem ourselves.

How about a toss sweep with our 6′4 270 lb full back leading the way instead of lining up our running backs beside the QB for a draw up the middle with no lead blocker

Did you see when Crowell ran to the sides he pick up more yardage but Booboo didnt I guess

Or how about putting 2 of our top TE and doing what Boise did and throwing a crossing pattern. Wait we did that to White once who made a big gain and Charles for the TD but for some reason that was never in the cards until we were down by 3 TD’s

How about when Boise started throwing the short crossing pattern passes we go to man coverage Nope we never adjusted to that one

Heres a thought how about rolling Murray how in play action pass where is really good and if no one is open telling to take off and run

How about when your not getting pentration on the D line you put 4 in the box with Gathers and Jenkins side by side for a stronger pass rush

I mean save the $1.4 million we are paying Booboo and Grantham pay me $150,000 I can do just as good as those 2 and save UGA a million

Isiah Crowell is not the messiah dawg fans were hoping for. He looks from the first game that he could end up being an okay running back like an Ealey or Caleb King with flashes of brilliance from time to time against the directional schools on the schedule. “How about a toss sweep with our 6′4 270 lb full back leading the way instead of lining up our running backs beside the QB for a draw up the middle with no lead blocker”

For some reason dawg fans just don’t understand football. A 6′4 270 lb fullback sounds impressive but that is way too slow for sec caliber defenses. All that huge size advantage didn’t impress Boise state. Their little 6 foot 1 inch linemen put spankings on Georgia’s 6′6 linemen.

All we heard over the summer was” Finish the Drill”,be ready for the 4th qtr.New S/C program.New dedication to the program.Run to Sanford and back with our shirts off to show off our new physics .S/C training is so hard that players are complaining to coaches. Hired ExDawgs with NFL experience to help in our S/C program. So now a team from Idaho comes to our house and just whips us on both sides of the ball.I’m I missing something here???? What the you know what is going on?

Folks, our problem sarts and ends in the trenches. Our LINE play on both sides has been pathetic for 3-4 years running. THe offensive line is just plain OFFENSIVE!!!! I think we don’t have a clue as to what we are trying to run on defense. Our defense still looks lost on the field. I am getting very discouraged with Richt and Company. Always have been upset with Bobo still calling offensive plays, but who’s fault is that????

Loss to Boise, loss to South Carolina, loss to Miss state, usual loss to Florida. 8-4 record assuming no loss to a rebuilding UT, a rebuilding AU, or a Tech team that doesn’t look that good. But if dogs lose one of those 3 then its 7-5. Or maybe they lose one of those 3 but win one of the three against USCe, UF, and MSU. Either way it looks like a ho hum 8-4 season and a 2nd straight Liberty Bowl. Not enough to keep Richt. He’s a goner barring a miracle.
