Rewind: Richt says Dogs likely to stick with TB rotation of Samuel, then Crowell

MONDAY MORNING REWIND

Happy Labor Day everyone. Glad to see some rain coming our way. God knows we need it.

Not sure how much it will help the Georgia Bulldogs, however. After watching Saturday night’s debacle against Boise State, it’s clear they need all the practice they can get before No. 12 South Carolina comes rolling into Athens next weekend. The last thing they need is a bunch of thunderstorms to chase them inside.

Welcome to the “Monday Morning Rewind.” This will be regular feature during the season. It’s nothing fancy, just a forum to make sure you get a chance to see everything we’ve got on football coverage. We’ll offer some fresh news, notes and quotes along with links to the latest versions of stories we’ve written over the weekend and a few from elsewhere. So let’s get to it. . . .

THE MAIN THING

Head coach Mark Richt held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. As expected, the news was not good on linebacker Alec Ogletree: Broken foot, surgery on Monday, out four to six weeks.

My story for print was on this development and how it affects Georgia’s attempts to contain South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore this time around. I also do a formatted review/preview box called “UGA Rewind” for the print section every Monday. Click HERE to check it out.

I wasn’t able to fit in this comment from Richt about Ogletree, who had been one of the Bulldogs’ stars in preseason camp:

“I’ve texted him a little bit but did not talk to him today. His family is in town in preparation for the surgery tomorrow. I’m sure he’s hurt. He’s crushed right now because he loves to play the game and he was really playing outstanding football . He played inspired football and our defense really came out ready to play and had a lot of great energy and enthusiasm and had a lot of big hits early on. He was a big part of that.”

Ogletree reached out to Georgia fans via Facebook on Sunday night:

“Thanks for all the support from everyone. I will continue to fight and get well. As for the team we are on a mission and it is about to begin. God has a plan for us so lets keep working hard and show up next week when the cocks roll in.” #9

FIVE MORE THINGS

1. Richt isn’t planning any changes in the tailback rotation for the South Carolina game. That is, junior Richard Samuel will again get the start over freshman Isaiah Crowell, who was clearly the better runner with 60 yards on 15 carries (4.0 average). Samuel had 12 yards on seven carries but apparently was better with other aspects of playing the position.

“Probably not,” Richt said to changing starters. “But we’ll keep competing and keep getting better. There’s some things understandably that Isaiah has to get better at in the protection area., just knowing who to block and how to get it done. I thought he was eager to block and he did make some very nice blocks. There were a couople of times he missed an assignment here or there. But Richard needs reps, too. He didn’t practice a lot at the end [of preseason camp]. A linebacker blitzed a couple of times while we were blocking them with the tailback position and they didn’t make the sack but we weren’t really outstanding in our protection fundamentals. We’ve just got to keep working at it.”

Junior Carlton Thomas returns this week as well. Thomas, Georgia’s third-string tailback last season, missed the opener due to a disciplinary suspension.

2. Bacarri Rambo, as Richt confirmed AFTER Saturday’s game, was indeed suspended after all. And Richt speculated that the junior from Donalsonville, probably would return to the starting lineup at free safety. He started all 13 games there last season.

“Yeah, I think we would” Richt said of Rambo starting. “I say that but I guess I shouldn’t be premature on that. I’d have to talk to Coach [Scott] Lakatose and see if it’s a slam dunk. But Bacarri’s going to play, that’s for sure.”

3. Richt expects starting left guard Kenarious Gates to return this week from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the entire second half against Boise. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, the only other lineman with previous game experience, filled in admirably in Gates’ absence and will continue to play a big role.

4. Richt wasn’t necessarily anticipating a lineup change at split end, where junior Tavarres King struggled on Saturday. King, expected to be the Bulldogs’ main target among wideouts, dropped two passes and finished with one catch for three yards.

“The bottom like is we’ve still got a lot of faith in Tavarres,” Richt said. “But everybody at that position especially is talented and we think can make plays. So we’re going to compete and see who’s going to start. But all those guys are going to play and we just need to let them play. ”

Richt praised freshman Malcolm Mitchell, who finished with 64 yards on three catches and scored on 51-yard catch-and-run. He said they’ll continue look to get him the football.

5. Richt was still majorly annoyed with the play of the offensive line, which allowed six quarterback sacks and even more hurries and pressures. They didn’t run block particularly well either, all of which helped them to a 2-for-13 third-down conversion rate.

“Third down is your position down,” he said. “That’s where you’ve got to make your first downs and keep your drives going and put yourself in field goal range or give yourself a chance to score touchdowns. I just felt like we didn’t do a good job in that area. Even when got the ball off I still thought he was getting there were a lot of times people were breathing down his neck and hitting him after he cut the ball loose. . . . We’ve got to get better. . . . If you look at it from an overall offensive point of view, that was probably the thing that was the most troublesome to me.”

FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier also held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. The Gamecocks — after trailing 17-0 early — defeated East Carolina 56-37 in their opener played in Charlotte. Gainesville’s Connor Shaw started the game at quarterback but was relieved by the often-troubled-but-never-sidelined Stephen Garcia, who rallied them to victory.

Spurrier was pretty funny when asked Sunday about Richt’s well-being in light of Georgia losing 13 of its last 27 games.

“You know, I’ve got enough problems down here. I don’t think Coach Richt needs me to worry about him. I was worried about my job at halftime last night. How about that?”

Spurrier resisted any urge he might have had to needle Georgia for losing to Boise State 35-21.

“Georgia is still a very good team,” he said. “They just didn’t play their best. It wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t favored over us this week. They are a very good team. They are very capable of doing some big things this year.”

Spurrier was more impressed with Boise State and their Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Kellen Moore.

“That quarterback is very good. He throws that ball like he’s got a baseball in his hand. He’s got a real quick release and he just flicks it here and flicks it there. He knows where everybody is. He’s hard to sack. He’s just really a good player. You just have to admire watching those guys play. I love watching them play because they block, they tackle well, they play fundamentals, they are just about always in position, they don’t do stupid things. They just play the game the way you are supposed to. I may vote them No. 1 in the country after watching them beat Georgia . . . Maybe after watching Boise Staet play all week will allow our guys to see how you’re supposed to play this game.”

Here’s a game story in the Anderson Independent that provides some details on the Gamecocks’ win over East Carolina.

If our line is so bad, why does anyone expect Murray to operate in a pocket. If I was bobo,(glad I’m not). I would run boot legs and quick passes. And toss sweeps. We have fast running backs who can get to the edge faster than lineman And linebackers. That’s why Florida beats us. They use their speed to their advantage.

Snoop Dawg has been preaching to you for a long time that Richt is a loser. Enter Exhibit #47. Boise State. He’s a walking dead man. These apologists do our program no favors. it just prolongs the pain, making it longer for the next coach to right the ship.
If you love Georgia Football, you really need to demand that Richt be fired right now, this week. A team of graduate assistants could do better with the remainder of the year while we find a worthy successor.

A South Carolina quarterback was recently injured in a scooter accident. He was knocked unconscious; he was not wearing a helmet, and he was carrying a pizza at the time. Read on, and you’ll find the link to that accident.

Some of you have seen my previous posts regarding very big players riding small so-called “moped scooters” around campus and getting injured in the process. That name is assigned to 2-wheel vehicles that have 50cc or less engines (typically 2 HP), don’t have titles or registration requirements and don’t require a motorcycle license to operate. I am really getting tired of coaches being ignorant about the dangers of players riding these little scooters that have load ratings of 200 pounds or less.

I ride a scooter; it is powered by a 250cc engine and has a load capacity or 350 pounds. I am licensed for motorcycles, the scooter of course is registered as a motor vehicle and it (unlike the 50cc machines) can be ridden on roads that have speed limits above 35 mph.

Well, SI has decided to pick up the theme, and they now have a blog devoted to it: the SI Scooter Incident Index.

How dare you come up with a smart plan for Murray

But we are worried if he runs the ball every now and then, he might get hurt

He wont get hurt being pile drived like he was 6 times standing in the pocket

This entire coaching staff is completely clueless. I am simply dreading the rest of the season. We are not going to beat South Carolina. We are not going to beat anyone of note this year. Its just the same crap over and over and over again. The O-line gets their ass handed to them on a silver platter. Stupid penalties out the whazoo. The defense gets tired and starts diving a the ball carrier’s feet instead of tackling them like a football player. We are a joke and Richt is the head clown.

Of course everyone is dissapointed about being 0-1. I’m not ashamed at all…we lost to a damn good football team. What I am ashamed of are the obvious lack of gametime adjustments, same vanilla offense and the D showing no improvement(maybe in the run game) and not to mention 2-3 false starts on the first possession. It’s the same ‘ol same ‘ol and thats why you are seeing alot of peed of Dawg fans..same ol same ol. We’ve had o-line problems for 3 years,no utilization of speed and draw plays on 3rd and 15 when we are down.

Heres the kicker!
I live in a place where Boise St. fans outnumber Dawg fans 6-1…so now I have to also listen to their crap about how they would rule the SEC.

UGA has seemed lost since the “Blackout” v. Bama. They had a high ranking with high profile players, but were hit in the mouth and have never recovered. Ever since they have been talking up toughness, but obviously don’t put the work in to truly be tough on the field.

I hope you did not go to Vegas on that pick.

@Billy Bronco now sure about taking anything to the bank but we are going to take your bunch to the woodshed….again

That’s the problem WDE. UGA went to the woodshed while the game was being played on the field.

DawginLex – September 2nd, 2011 – 1:17 pm
Any Boise supporter want to discuss this? Points allowed to “real” teams
VT-30 – Oregon St 24 – Nevada 34
kinda debunks that defense rating doesn’t it?

You said it perfectly DawginLex. UGA only scored 21 so BSU was not playing a “real team”

JB – September 2nd, 2011 – 2:24 pm
coaching is probably the only advantage they have, hate to say. Surely not the athletes

Really JB? Did you even watch the game?

DAWGS forever – September 2nd, 2011 – 2:48 pm
DAWGS 24-13
Our D is improved and we have enough O to score a few times. They only get 1 TD and the rest FG.

Well, at least you got the “we have enough O to score a few times” right.

Athens= God’s Country – September 2nd, 2011 – 5:07 pm
Dawgs win 35-24.
Probably by more

Very close on the score. You just had the teams reversed.

I hope that is all you bet on the game Hairy.

Well this season and his career boil down to th enext 11 games. Lets be real, staff changes will no longer be made. If he does not right this ship firing Bobo will be the least of the issues. His job will be up, but I am not going to pull for that. I am not going to say at 0-1 the season is over. Hell Kellen Moore is a damn good football player at the most important position in college football. Outside of Andrew Luck he is the next choice for Heisman. So play Man to Man and blitz against Moore? We would have been beaten worse on crossing and drag routes over the middle. It just boils down to the fact that if you cant handle what is going on then stop watching the games and reading the blogs. The rest of us can do without the constant bullcrap coming out of you mouths.

JJ#29… I hope YOU will read this, cause this comes from the heart.

1. YOU decided to wear the UGA uniform, therefore YOU have to learn to take the criticism as well as the praise.

2. Where would YOU BE if these un-loyal fans just left and never supported this team / program again?

3. Not one, and I mean not one person has criticized a player on the TEAM, yet. The coaches, however, are the hot button issue.

4. No one questions whether the PLAYERS will fight till the end, but will the COACHES do that also. Why do I ask? Because while you were in California trying to bump up your NFL credentials, WE (fans), have watched CMR (not the asst coaches) continuously having the game plan stonewalled and their is no plan B,C, or any other adjustments. If there are adjustments, then they are not working. Before UGA hired Richt, they were warned that he isn’t very good in the 4th quarter or in late game situations. In 10 yrs, the 4th quarter is upon us now.

5. How would you know a loyal fan from an unloyal one? In order to be unloyal, you have to be loyal first. We are just tired of that girlfriend who keeps saying be here @ 8 o’clock and she is never ready when I get there and then she doesn’t want to go on the date at all. Time to get another woman. Once or twice it is ok IF the defense is over-pursuing or if it works. If it doesn’t work once or twice then why continue doing it for four quarters? Oh yeah and don’t get started on needing 5 yards on 3rd down and taking a sack because the QB is having to wait on everyone to go thirty yards downfield.

UGA fans that are having negative things to say are mostly being honest and sincere. Bobo calls plays like what you see from part time coaches in Pop Warner league. He is awful.

Richt seems to be mailing it in. I hate saying that because I thought he was a good guy, but if he isn’t serious and just wants to radically change his life and go live with and help backward cultures, then he needs to clear out now and let UGA get someone who is serious. I’ll continue to support the players but it is really difficult to have confidence for our coaches when its been the same crap(lack of conditioning, stupid penalties etc.) since ‘08. Yeah we may still have a good year..i’m optimistic, but going on recent past experiences with this staff..i’m not counting on it.

The only positive thing I can say and I will be in the minority here is our defense did look better somewhat

Boise was 0-5 in the first half on 3rd down conversions, 4-12 in the game. A much better improvement especially against an offense of their caliber

The other thing I still believe like last year our Defense was on the field toooooo looonnngggg

So thats why I give Gratham the pass

So Im not jumping off Granthams bandwaggon just yet. He did dissappoint by not adjusting to the short pass and I dont understand why he didnt put 4 lineman Jenkins and Gathers in the box at one time. Thats what concerns me about him

But Richt or Bobo on the offensive play calling is an absolute joke and has been a joke on the talk shows this morning i.e Bill King, Rivals and Brando’s call in show and I just cring about what will be said on the Finebaum show later

I do not like it, It shows lack of team focus, more about focus on one’s self. It’s selfish and smacks of wanting to bring attention to yourself and not the team. @Flat Tire on I-95 in Jacksonville It appears BooBoo needs to “study the game of football (lol)” and watch some N.O. Saints film and Drew Brees. They move the pocket around for him, from right to left. However, Murray is a MUCH better athlete and last year proved he was much better when he was on the move and allowed to freestyle a little bit. BooBoo has him thinking about 3rd and 4th options TOO much. Against Boise, the ball should have left his hands in 3 seconds flat. Once again, not ONE crossing route or hot read was called when the knew a blitz was coming. Murray should have had 10 attempts and 50 yards rushing in this game. That’s what you run when you have a weak, underskilled OL. But I get the feeling only you, I, AND MAYBE 10 people will see common sense

I do think the defense looked better than last year. Considering the pathetic offensive (and offensive) performance – Mike Bobo, poor Pop Warner league coach, and loosing Ogletree, they were worn out.

If I was Grantham, I would be raging in the coach meetings. I would rage so loudly that Richt would fire me…. instead of doing the right thing and firing Bobo.

No surge from the OL out of the I-Formation to give the running game consistent running lanes. Running draws out of the Shotgun takes advantage of the DL eager to get up the field to pressure the QB. Thus the OL is not forced to create lanes but taking advantage of the DL over aggressiveness. That is why you run draws out of the Shotgun. This also is intended to allow the QB more time in the pocket if the Draws are successfully run in passing situations.

slydog

@Lowcountry Bulldog ” We would have been beaten worse on crossing and drag routes over the middle.”

No disrespect, but that’s what they were running all night against a soft, wide open zone. At least in man to man, our size, strength, and speed would have forced Moore to throw into tight windows and passing lanes. His noodle for an arm could not have survived that. That’s why NFL QB’s need “live arms.” Those slow, bulky H-backs were open all night, just pick one. Just cut on a Steeler’s tape and see how a 3-4 needs to be ran. BLITZ,BLITZ,BLITZ, SOME MORE. It was game #1, so route adjustments couldn’t have been made in the middle of the game.

I did have expectations of smart playcalling(3rd and 15 and we run a draw, and we are down 14?) and wrapping up on D and seeing in game adjustments(Kellen ate us for lunch and nothing was done to stop it). I am well aware Boise is a good team and they were favored, but to see us winded in 3rd quarter like that? Who does that fall back on? Haven’t we been hearing all summer our S&C is back? Hell it was 72 degrees in the dome!!!! Who’s fault is that? Same ol same ol

I thought Grantham called a good game. Held the running game in check for most of the game. The Passing attack by BSU was a controlled ball control type attack, no huge plays just ones that drove everyone crazy. That is to expect though with the calibur of leader they have running the offense.

Why all the doom and gloom? Oh gee golly I don’t know. Maybe because we are 1-10 in our past 11 games vs. ranked opponents. Maybe because a team from freaking Idaho just schooled us in the GEORGIA Dome. Maybe because we are now a perpetually MEDIOCRE football program and have been for some time.

But I guess I’ll just stick my head in the sand becasue that’s what “real” fans do.

Coach u were 2 for 13 on 3rd down often having their D wind up and rush or sack Murray.
BUT we are happy our tailback is picking up blitzes..

Maybe if we did not do pass- run – pass hurry up offense our D would not be on the field for more than 20 minutes in the half…??

You played a top 5 team and a Heisman hopeful QB but the game was not nearly as close as we’d have liked it to be.

As for the players they are doing their thing .. They are not getting called out …but I don’t really think god has a plan for their season either real time or fantasy football..

Slydog,

We both are more than likely right. Our best defense would have been a better showing from our offense.

UGA: One big political fan base (and delusional)

Do you 4 think that this would be tolerated at FL or AL no

I support the kids and the team but sitting their supporting a mechanic who is supposed to fix your Mercedes and doesnt even know how to crank the car is stupid

UGA is a Mercedes level program that has a mechanic that doesnt know what to do

This has been obvious since Van Gorder left. And Richt is to blame for his departure too
