Rewind: Richt says Dogs likely to stick with TB rotation of Samuel, then Crowell

MONDAY MORNING REWIND

Happy Labor Day everyone. Glad to see some rain coming our way. God knows we need it.

Not sure how much it will help the Georgia Bulldogs, however. After watching Saturday night’s debacle against Boise State, it’s clear they need all the practice they can get before No. 12 South Carolina comes rolling into Athens next weekend. The last thing they need is a bunch of thunderstorms to chase them inside.

Welcome to the “Monday Morning Rewind.” This will be regular feature during the season. It’s nothing fancy, just a forum to make sure you get a chance to see everything we’ve got on football coverage. We’ll offer some fresh news, notes and quotes along with links to the latest versions of stories we’ve written over the weekend and a few from elsewhere. So let’s get to it. . . .

THE MAIN THING

Head coach Mark Richt held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. As expected, the news was not good on linebacker Alec Ogletree: Broken foot, surgery on Monday, out four to six weeks.

My story for print was on this development and how it affects Georgia’s attempts to contain South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore this time around. I also do a formatted review/preview box called “UGA Rewind” for the print section every Monday. Click HERE to check it out.

I wasn’t able to fit in this comment from Richt about Ogletree, who had been one of the Bulldogs’ stars in preseason camp:

“I’ve texted him a little bit but did not talk to him today. His family is in town in preparation for the surgery tomorrow. I’m sure he’s hurt. He’s crushed right now because he loves to play the game and he was really playing outstanding football . He played inspired football and our defense really came out ready to play and had a lot of great energy and enthusiasm and had a lot of big hits early on. He was a big part of that.”

Ogletree reached out to Georgia fans via Facebook on Sunday night:

“Thanks for all the support from everyone. I will continue to fight and get well. As for the team we are on a mission and it is about to begin. God has a plan for us so lets keep working hard and show up next week when the cocks roll in.” #9

FIVE MORE THINGS

1. Richt isn’t planning any changes in the tailback rotation for the South Carolina game. That is, junior Richard Samuel will again get the start over freshman Isaiah Crowell, who was clearly the better runner with 60 yards on 15 carries (4.0 average). Samuel had 12 yards on seven carries but apparently was better with other aspects of playing the position.

“Probably not,” Richt said to changing starters. “But we’ll keep competing and keep getting better. There’s some things understandably that Isaiah has to get better at in the protection area., just knowing who to block and how to get it done. I thought he was eager to block and he did make some very nice blocks. There were a couople of times he missed an assignment here or there. But Richard needs reps, too. He didn’t practice a lot at the end [of preseason camp]. A linebacker blitzed a couple of times while we were blocking them with the tailback position and they didn’t make the sack but we weren’t really outstanding in our protection fundamentals. We’ve just got to keep working at it.”

Junior Carlton Thomas returns this week as well. Thomas, Georgia’s third-string tailback last season, missed the opener due to a disciplinary suspension.

2. Bacarri Rambo, as Richt confirmed AFTER Saturday’s game, was indeed suspended after all. And Richt speculated that the junior from Donalsonville, probably would return to the starting lineup at free safety. He started all 13 games there last season.

“Yeah, I think we would” Richt said of Rambo starting. “I say that but I guess I shouldn’t be premature on that. I’d have to talk to Coach [Scott] Lakatose and see if it’s a slam dunk. But Bacarri’s going to play, that’s for sure.”

3. Richt expects starting left guard Kenarious Gates to return this week from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the entire second half against Boise. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, the only other lineman with previous game experience, filled in admirably in Gates’ absence and will continue to play a big role.

4. Richt wasn’t necessarily anticipating a lineup change at split end, where junior Tavarres King struggled on Saturday. King, expected to be the Bulldogs’ main target among wideouts, dropped two passes and finished with one catch for three yards.

“The bottom like is we’ve still got a lot of faith in Tavarres,” Richt said. “But everybody at that position especially is talented and we think can make plays. So we’re going to compete and see who’s going to start. But all those guys are going to play and we just need to let them play. ”

Richt praised freshman Malcolm Mitchell, who finished with 64 yards on three catches and scored on 51-yard catch-and-run. He said they’ll continue look to get him the football.

5. Richt was still majorly annoyed with the play of the offensive line, which allowed six quarterback sacks and even more hurries and pressures. They didn’t run block particularly well either, all of which helped them to a 2-for-13 third-down conversion rate.

“Third down is your position down,” he said. “That’s where you’ve got to make your first downs and keep your drives going and put yourself in field goal range or give yourself a chance to score touchdowns. I just felt like we didn’t do a good job in that area. Even when got the ball off I still thought he was getting there were a lot of times people were breathing down his neck and hitting him after he cut the ball loose. . . . We’ve got to get better. . . . If you look at it from an overall offensive point of view, that was probably the thing that was the most troublesome to me.”

FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier also held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. The Gamecocks — after trailing 17-0 early — defeated East Carolina 56-37 in their opener played in Charlotte. Gainesville’s Connor Shaw started the game at quarterback but was relieved by the often-troubled-but-never-sidelined Stephen Garcia, who rallied them to victory.

Spurrier was pretty funny when asked Sunday about Richt’s well-being in light of Georgia losing 13 of its last 27 games.

“You know, I’ve got enough problems down here. I don’t think Coach Richt needs me to worry about him. I was worried about my job at halftime last night. How about that?”

Spurrier resisted any urge he might have had to needle Georgia for losing to Boise State 35-21.

“Georgia is still a very good team,” he said. “They just didn’t play their best. It wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t favored over us this week. They are a very good team. They are very capable of doing some big things this year.”

Spurrier was more impressed with Boise State and their Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Kellen Moore.

“That quarterback is very good. He throws that ball like he’s got a baseball in his hand. He’s got a real quick release and he just flicks it here and flicks it there. He knows where everybody is. He’s hard to sack. He’s just really a good player. You just have to admire watching those guys play. I love watching them play because they block, they tackle well, they play fundamentals, they are just about always in position, they don’t do stupid things. They just play the game the way you are supposed to. I may vote them No. 1 in the country after watching them beat Georgia . . . Maybe after watching Boise Staet play all week will allow our guys to see how you’re supposed to play this game.”

Here’s a game story in the Anderson Independent that provides some details on the Gamecocks’ win over East Carolina.

COMPLETE GAME WRAPUP

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

A reminder that these players are tuned in to what people say and write about them. Here is a message sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones posted on Facebook on Sunday:

“As I read some of the sport blogs, I see a many of the so-called Bulldawg fan comments. A lot of you all are some of the most un-loyal fans I’ve ever witnessed. If you want to trash us, don’t support us. Those who are loyal and willing to fight to the end with us will, we’re thankful for them. This from the heart. I dont care if you dont like it or me. My team is very passionate about what we do and we’re going to continue to fight.” — JJ #29

The Georgia football team has developed a gang mentality that accelerated after Richt sent the team on the field to rap dance against UF in the worst display of bad sportsmanship since Woody Hayes punched the Clemson player. Now we have players sending tweets to head coaches and talking smack to the fan base for criticizing sloppy play. There is no discipline, sense of team, or feeling of affiliation to the University. This cannot be fixed quickly or easily. It will require a new coaching staff and a recruiting focus that stresses character, not individuality and athletic talent alone.

Hey J.J. #29, I’ve played a LOT more organized football than you, you see passion when it’s there, and when it’s absent it is noticeable. You may very well play with passion and intensity. But this is a TEAM sport, individualism runs rampant and can blind you when you only focus on yourself (see dreadlocks and ill fitting helmets that delay games and distract you from preparing for the next play and call.). Calling out teammates WHEN they need calling out is leadership….not telling them all is ok when they refuse to get better.

I thought I would wait until some of the dust settled from Saturdays train wreck to see when AltamahaDawg and DawginLex would make the appeareance on this site, but I guess they are really hungover from all of that KoolAid they drank for the last eight months. The other nights game wasn’t just a loss – it was total embarassment for UGA football and all associated with it. Anyone who thinks that these clowns that are ripping off UGA in this ponzi scheme can in some way justify their positions for future employment with the school are either totally blind to reality or really do not care what happens.

Some person on the Colin show stated this AM that our uniforms look like the combination of New Mexico State and UNLV . He said we played offense and defense like them also!!! He went on to say we lived up to our tradition for all the hype before the season starts. This is on ESPN. UGA is becoming the joke for college football.

Georgia stats

Rushing 137 on 31 rushes (take away Boykins 80 run and the rushing total
57 yards on 30 tries –not to swell)

Passing 236 yards (take away the 2 big plays, 36 yards to Charles and 51 yds. To Mitchell and you
have 149yds on 14 for 28) That my friends is 206 yards of total offense-ugly.

Those 3 big plays won’t be TD’s against SEC defensive speed.

The biggest problem I have with Mark Richt is accountability. In his 10 years as head coach, I have NEVER heard him take responsibility for a poor performance. He is always congratulating the opposition (which is admirable), but NEVER have I heard him say “We just were not prepared today”, “I didn’t do my job as a leader and head coach”, “We need to get better in every facet of our game if we are going to improve and win”, “I’m embarrassed by our performance”. I realize it’s not in Richt’s personality to focus on negatives, but most of the great leaders/coaches would recognize their weaknesses, admit that improvements must be made, and be accountable for their performance.

Richard Samuel was a 5 Star RB when recruited by UGA.

Hey collegeballfan,

That tells you that the recruiting rankings are wrong most of the time. C. King was also a 5 star RB & K. Moore the QB for Boise St was a 2 star QB. The recruiting people like to tell you how fast a guy is,how big a guy is & how athletic a guy is but what they can’t tell you is if the guy is a good football player & what his football IQ is because based on what I have seen the last few years our players play like they have no football smarts or it could be the coaching.

Go back & look at the player rankings coming out of high school in the last 5-10 years. Most of the high ranking players were a bust.

Look at some of the best players that came to Ga.
1) Terry Hoage (All American for 2 years-SEC Defensive Player of the Year for 2 straight years-played in the NFL for 13 years) He had 2 college offers coming out of high school NO RECRUITING STARS(Furman & Sam Houston St & they were both DII schools BUT Erk got tip about a kid in Texas & then saw him & knew he could be a star. Erk was someone who knew talent when he saw it & didn’t need any star rating to tell him if a kid could play. Most of the players Erk recruited to UGA & Ga Southern were 1,2 & 3 star players & many were there as a walk on but Erk know how to coach & most important knew how to motivate a kid to give 120% effort.

For all you people who are not familar with the Real Junk Yard Dogs under Erk they were a lot like Boise St not heavily recruited but they would get after it. Now let me give you some names you should know D. Pollack(2 stars), T. Davis(2 stars) so you can see now that how many stars a player has means nothing & Boise St is perfect example of that.

I commend TB for his perspective on the situation.

As hard as it may be to accept, the facts are all that really matter. TB has stated a number of them; enough that even the most ardent bulldog supporter would admit reflects a program that continues in a negative transition. This is in spite of continued recruiting of four and five star talent.

The root cause of the decline:The Head Coach
o Lack of commitment. Mark Richt is not a 24/7/365 football coach. He is man of high moral standards and strong religious belief. His priorities in life center around not just football but also serving the Lord, and the Lord comes first. This is not a criticism, for I fully subscribe to that myself. Unfortunately his SEC football peers do have that commitment.

o loyalty to poor performance: coaches AND players that consistently perform poorly remain in their jobs.
Could it be CRM does not see Bobo’s poor performance because Bobo is running CRM’s plays?

o Passion and Fire: Where is the fire and brimstone that puts the fear to fail in these boys? You MUST have that with these 18-21 year boys. No, they are not MEN, they are coddled and to some degree spoiled boys. 18-21 year old military MEN have died and continue to die in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Just speculating now, but I suspect CRM will resign at the end of the season if the expectations of the AD are not met. If he doesn’t I believe he will be terminated.

One of the many things the Marine Corps taught me was to NEVER, NEVER quit. I will continue to support UGA and UGA football. I will give the players their due. I will recognize the facts and not live in the past. I will be patient. This season has just begun and I will wait and see what transpires. I fully understand you will lose battles; it is winning the war that matters.

To the MEN on this blog, I stand with you; to the boys I say grow up.

They are energy vampires. Most of our team looked slow and lethargic. Something stole their energy and the vampires in the best position to do it were the coaches.

Replace Bobo with a dominate High School Offensive coach and let’s see if we can win some games this year.

As for JJ, he played really well. Ogletrees loss hurts bad. Players should show their love for UGA and shave the damn dreadlocks and get serious about the game. Football isn’t fun.

Lattimore and the SC Oline will wear GA’s defense down by the 3rd qtr and result will be worse than last years game where he rushed for 180 yds (?) or whatever it was. GA’s D could hardly stop Boise’s RB who is pretty good but no lattimore. When lattimore isn’t running Garcia will pick apart GA’s soft zone and make no mistake our DC won’t do anything to stop SC’s attack, now w/o Tree. Even if we were healthy we’re still stuck w/Bobo’s play calling and a woeful Oline. CMR has made some terrible choices on hiring asst coaches and allowed the better ones to get away.

Finally, I heard nothing from CMR post game or Sunday’s comments that would give any encouragement to fans on changes that would hopefully stop this slide into the pits of SEC football. He must think he has no worries or false hopes he’ll be the HC for life. The AU HC called out his coaches after the game w/UT St saying essentially get better or get out of town! GA football will continually decline as long as CMR is HC. Please, just leave.

the difference in the game saturday was that boise state’s offense is like an advance college class and uga’s is basic elementary school. boise state had a game plan and a purpose while uga is random play calling. there is no rhyme or reason to the play calling. that bsu td where they flooded the right side was designed to get their big tight end open in the red zone. there is no design in uga’s plays, they just run routes and try to get open.

I couldn’t believe their 2nd string center had the presence to watch the play clock wind down and snap the ball so they would not incur a penalty. Someone please explain to me when looking at the UGA roster I see all the speed and athletic ability and yet it is rarely utilized. Other, than the first play(which was a great call by the way) I struggled to find many instances(sp) where UGA put their talent in position to be successful. Now i always lean toward watching and evaluation defensive play, so I will start with a few observations. 1) Our “Jimmies” are better than their “Joes”- when UGA steps off the bus they will be more talented than 95% of the teams they face, if not greater. This isn’t the NFL where talent is pretty much spread out evenly. We have better talent, know how that talent is being coached and motivated is a different aspect, but like HS football if you have the more talented team you should win the majority of your matchups. How can you leave all that size and speed in zone coverage most of the game. I’m not saying you have to play man to man all game, but you have to eliminate some of those “HUGE” windows we were giving Boise St. K. Moore to throw in, it was like playing “pitch and catch” in the backyard.
You have to put a body on a body and eliminate space, make him make the great pass. I can live with kid making a play, it’s hard to stomach giving them a play. Disrupt timing of the offensive scheme, make those young receivers have to work against press coverage, it will give that Front Seven a little more time to create pressure. Look you don’t have to sack the QB to be effective, making him very uncomfortable and worried will do the trick quite often, this I know! Hey I can go on and on, but you get the idea…
I’m sure they will get this figure out before S.Carolina. Observe, Evaluate, Position, and Play!

What irrates most true dawg fans is when something you’ve tried over and over again isn’t working you either don’t do it anymore or do something different. W/GA, and most notibly Bobo, keep going back to plays that hardly gain yardage or are sniffed out by the Def every time. Bobo has to know his Oline is and will never be w/this current crew, able to open holes up the middle, yet after failing to complete a pass on 1st down you can bet its up the middle again on 2d down!! For 3 years, this has become a GA trademark. Its no wonder the fans that are not blind loyalists have lost faith in this coaching staff. We see nothing in the way of change that would make us believe things will get better. All these coaches have had their chance and more then enough time to correct these recurring blunders but still they decide to continue w/their losing ways. Time to clean house. They’ve had their chance and failed.
