MONDAY MORNING REWIND
Happy Labor Day everyone. Glad to see some rain coming our way. God knows we need it.
Not sure how much it will help the Georgia Bulldogs, however. After watching Saturday night’s debacle against Boise State, it’s clear they need all the practice they can get before No. 12 South Carolina comes rolling into Athens next weekend. The last thing they need is a bunch of thunderstorms to chase them inside.
Welcome to the “Monday Morning Rewind.” This will be regular feature during the season. It’s nothing fancy, just a forum to make sure you get a chance to see everything we’ve got on football coverage. We’ll offer some fresh news, notes and quotes along with links to the latest versions of stories we’ve written over the weekend and a few from elsewhere. So let’s get to it. . . .
THE MAIN THING
Head coach Mark Richt held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. As expected, the news was not good on linebacker Alec Ogletree: Broken foot, surgery on Monday, out four to six weeks.
My story for print was on this development and how it affects Georgia’s attempts to contain South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore this time around. I also do a formatted review/preview box called “UGA Rewind” for the print section every Monday. Click HERE to check it out.
I wasn’t able to fit in this comment from Richt about Ogletree, who had been one of the Bulldogs’ stars in preseason camp:
“I’ve texted him a little bit but did not talk to him today. His family is in town in preparation for the surgery tomorrow. I’m sure he’s hurt. He’s crushed right now because he loves to play the game and he was really playing outstanding football . He played inspired football and our defense really came out ready to play and had a lot of great energy and enthusiasm and had a lot of big hits early on. He was a big part of that.”
Ogletree reached out to Georgia fans via Facebook on Sunday night:
“Thanks for all the support from everyone. I will continue to fight and get well. As for the team we are on a mission and it is about to begin. God has a plan for us so lets keep working hard and show up next week when the cocks roll in.” #9
FIVE MORE THINGS
1. Richt isn’t planning any changes in the tailback rotation for the South Carolina game. That is, junior Richard Samuel will again get the start over freshman Isaiah Crowell, who was clearly the better runner with 60 yards on 15 carries (4.0 average). Samuel had 12 yards on seven carries but apparently was better with other aspects of playing the position.
“Probably not,” Richt said to changing starters. “But we’ll keep competing and keep getting better. There’s some things understandably that Isaiah has to get better at in the protection area., just knowing who to block and how to get it done. I thought he was eager to block and he did make some very nice blocks. There were a couople of times he missed an assignment here or there. But Richard needs reps, too. He didn’t practice a lot at the end [of preseason camp]. A linebacker blitzed a couple of times while we were blocking them with the tailback position and they didn’t make the sack but we weren’t really outstanding in our protection fundamentals. We’ve just got to keep working at it.”
Junior Carlton Thomas returns this week as well. Thomas, Georgia’s third-string tailback last season, missed the opener due to a disciplinary suspension.
2. Bacarri Rambo, as Richt confirmed AFTER Saturday’s game, was indeed suspended after all. And Richt speculated that the junior from Donalsonville, probably would return to the starting lineup at free safety. He started all 13 games there last season.
“Yeah, I think we would” Richt said of Rambo starting. “I say that but I guess I shouldn’t be premature on that. I’d have to talk to Coach [Scott] Lakatose and see if it’s a slam dunk. But Bacarri’s going to play, that’s for sure.”
3. Richt expects starting left guard Kenarious Gates to return this week from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the entire second half against Boise. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, the only other lineman with previous game experience, filled in admirably in Gates’ absence and will continue to play a big role.
4. Richt wasn’t necessarily anticipating a lineup change at split end, where junior Tavarres King struggled on Saturday. King, expected to be the Bulldogs’ main target among wideouts, dropped two passes and finished with one catch for three yards.
“The bottom like is we’ve still got a lot of faith in Tavarres,” Richt said. “But everybody at that position especially is talented and we think can make plays. So we’re going to compete and see who’s going to start. But all those guys are going to play and we just need to let them play. ”
Richt praised freshman Malcolm Mitchell, who finished with 64 yards on three catches and scored on 51-yard catch-and-run. He said they’ll continue look to get him the football.
5. Richt was still majorly annoyed with the play of the offensive line, which allowed six quarterback sacks and even more hurries and pressures. They didn’t run block particularly well either, all of which helped them to a 2-for-13 third-down conversion rate.
“Third down is your position down,” he said. “That’s where you’ve got to make your first downs and keep your drives going and put yourself in field goal range or give yourself a chance to score touchdowns. I just felt like we didn’t do a good job in that area. Even when got the ball off I still thought he was getting there were a lot of times people were breathing down his neck and hitting him after he cut the ball loose. . . . We’ve got to get better. . . . If you look at it from an overall offensive point of view, that was probably the thing that was the most troublesome to me.”
FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier also held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. The Gamecocks — after trailing 17-0 early — defeated East Carolina 56-37 in their opener played in Charlotte. Gainesville’s Connor Shaw started the game at quarterback but was relieved by the often-troubled-but-never-sidelined Stephen Garcia, who rallied them to victory.
Spurrier was pretty funny when asked Sunday about Richt’s well-being in light of Georgia losing 13 of its last 27 games.
“You know, I’ve got enough problems down here. I don’t think Coach Richt needs me to worry about him. I was worried about my job at halftime last night. How about that?”
Spurrier resisted any urge he might have had to needle Georgia for losing to Boise State 35-21.
“Georgia is still a very good team,” he said. “They just didn’t play their best. It wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t favored over us this week. They are a very good team. They are very capable of doing some big things this year.”
Spurrier was more impressed with Boise State and their Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Kellen Moore.
“That quarterback is very good. He throws that ball like he’s got a baseball in his hand. He’s got a real quick release and he just flicks it here and flicks it there. He knows where everybody is. He’s hard to sack. He’s just really a good player. You just have to admire watching those guys play. I love watching them play because they block, they tackle well, they play fundamentals, they are just about always in position, they don’t do stupid things. They just play the game the way you are supposed to. I may vote them No. 1 in the country after watching them beat Georgia . . . Maybe after watching Boise Staet play all week will allow our guys to see how you’re supposed to play this game.”
Here’s a game story in the Anderson Independent that provides some details on the Gamecocks’ win over East Carolina.
COMPLETE GAME WRAPUP
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
A reminder that these players are tuned in to what people say and write about them. Here is a message sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones posted on Facebook on Sunday:
“As I read some of the sport blogs, I see a many of the so-called Bulldawg fan comments. A lot of you all are some of the most un-loyal fans I’ve ever witnessed. If you want to trash us, don’t support us. Those who are loyal and willing to fight to the end with us will, we’re thankful for them. This from the heart. I dont care if you dont like it or me. My team is very passionate about what we do and we’re going to continue to fight.” — JJ #29

Guru,
your right in the fact that he is a beast and a surgeon but there is no excuse for the fact that they made adjustments and we didn’t. The only tim he made even the slightest mistake was when we got pressure. I saw very few blitzes. I am not taking anything away from Boise ST, they are a VERY good team and I am not giving up on the season but you can not hide the fact that we were clearly out smarted and out coached on both sides of the ball. When they blitzed the backers we stilled dropped back and tried to go through proggressions rather than looking for a quick hit over the middle. How many times do you run up the gut with no success?? Crowell made something happen when he got the ball in space but it was a very few times.

BSU squeaked by VT, so a big boy SEC team like us should destroy BSU… VT lost to James Madison for christs sake!!! BSU is weak, plays a cupcake schedule against weak, slow, small teams.
They’ve seen this kind of size and speed.

JJ and any other players that are on the Bulldog team please stop reading these and any other blogs. Use that time to study not only your play book but your academic studies. You really need not concern yourselves with the ranting of some here and on other blogs as this is an outlet for grown and not so grown people to vent or rave. You shouldn’t take much stock in what is being said here but listen to your coach’s and your family. Leave the fanatical stuff to us “experts” as at times the intelligent level exhibited by some does not represent the entire fan base, just those very few who have way to much time on their hands and engage their mouths before their brains, a lesson that you and your team mates may want to learn before posting on an open blog or any other social network. Good luck on Saturday, work hard and make yourself and your family proud of your efforts.

One guy’s impression:
Defense looked better. They were on the field too much. If the offense holds the ball more, and makes more drives, then they don’t give up more than 21 against a really good offense.
Our offense looks overmatched, week in and week out, against almost every team. We’re not very smart in playcalling. It seems like Bobo is in over his head. He doesn’t adjust well to what defenses are doing. We consistently don’t have receivers open. If other teams can consistently find holes in a zone, we should too.
As much as I hate to admit it, because I LOVE Richt, if Peterson was coaching this team, we would be unbelievable. I am sincerely wondering if the game has passed him by.
We need a big win fast so these young guys will remember what it feels like to win. It has been a while. Winning is contagious, but unfortunately, so is losing.
I’ll still be there cheering my butt off this weekend in Athens. Let’s support these boys, despite our doubts. They deserve it.

Bulldog fans left the dome early saturday night for good reason. What they saw was shocking and embarrassing. They saw their SEC team be pushed around by a team from Idaho!! The dawgs were manhandled by smaller, better coached, and better prepared players.
As much as I enjoyed my season tickets the past decade I can no longer take it. It is no longer fun for me to watch my college team go downhill and show no signs of improvement. The past few years have been filled with false hopes and promises. They have steadily gotten worse the past three years and from what I saw saturday night this year is continuing the downward process. My college football team is now a second rate SEC team that can’t win big games, losing to our SEC oppenents has become the norm. Losing everytime they play a ranked oppenent may be fun for some of you but it is not enjoyable to me. Looking like they did against Boise saturday night has to be unacceptable to all real fans. Something has to change. Whatever Coach Richt is doing obviously no longer motivates the players enough for them to play well enough to win. Nothing he and his coaches are doing is working. Time for a change.

UGA is an embarrassment to the SEC. SEC fans deep down knew that UGA was a perfect match for Boise State in the sense that those outside of our region think UGA is an elite program, but those down here know that they are a bottom feeder SEC team. We hoped that they could get the job done, but we knew deep down they wouldn’t.

Hee Haw Dawg, are you in a time zone? The game’s over, you lost, and those BSU boys play really big boy football. If BSU played in the SEC they might just win the NC! Of course they might just win it anyway. If UGA wants to win year in and year out join another conference or play up to the SEC standard. The almighty SEC isn’t the only conference with good teams, look around, get off your high horse and join the rest of the world.

UGA is pretty much what I expected.
UGA fans have to come to term with the fact that the AJC homers are not doing you any favors by posting the delusional beaner reports that they so love to post.
And the rational UGA posters on this board need to reign the board police who ran around this summer attacking anyone who dared wonder how this leftover team from last years debacle and a few newbies were really going to be the juggernaut which the AJC homers where trying to convince people of. Despite a summer of warning, it looks like a whole bunch of UGA fans went to the Dome on Saturday fully excepting to see a reincarnation of the New England Patriots totally destroy Boisy.
Has anyone checked on Athensdawg and DawginLex? Starting to get worried as they seemed to actually believe some of the koolaide?

Alot of these blog comments are coming from those who had to drive back to Athens after the game Saturday and had a long time to get madder and madder about the team performance. At least next weeks game is at home.
You are even seeing commenters post about other teams opponents. (western carolina) I remember the UGA fans saying that if they get by the first two games they would go undefeated with their weaker schedule. You also have Coastal Carolina and New Mexico State. This is why Alabama and Florida schedule weaker teams before they get into the SEC schedule. They see what they have and where they need to work things out. If South Carolina had been playing a tougher team, they would not have come back so easily. Now they will have their best QB playing against GA.

Were I not such a diehard Dawg fan I would find them easy to hate Mark. Arrogant coach who is pitching breakeven football in recent years. Players who text opposing coaches. Roster filled with felons. Players who need asthma inhalers on sidelines after every play. Players who celebrate tackles 10 or more yards downfield. An offensive coordinator who would be hard pressed to make it at Pop Warner level. Jury still out on UGA defense. Not impressed thus far. Once top tier program which still considers itself at same level. Bravado never backed up on field. Five star rated players with talent but no heart. Yes. It would be so easy to hate Dawgs. Understand why so many football fans with knowledge do! Is UGA still alive> Was he even at Georgia Dome. If not then that is one smart pooch!

FULLBACK ISSUES
Boise State senior starting fullback Dan Paul made the trip but didn’t play because of a groin injury. His backup, junior tight end Chandler Koch, didn’t make the trip because of injury.
Defensive tackle Mike Atkinson, who played fullback in high school, started.
Redshirt freshman Dan Goodale, a walk-on out of Timberline High, started as the field-goal kicker for the Broncos.
Goodale was 5-for-5 on PATs and didn’t try a field goal, because he never needed to.

I am a long time supporter of Mark Richt and admire him for his Christian faith. You will not find a more genuine individual. My family has been season ticket holders for almost 60 years, I am a genuine fan and support the program. I was at the game Saturday and stayed until the last play was made. It was embarressing to watch our so-called fans walk out with over 11 minutes to play.
It has been frustrating to watch our team degress and the coaching staff not make any major changes to the program. It almost seems like CMR doesn’t mind being mediocre and settling for seven or eight wins a year. Whatever happens the rest of the season, I hope the right changes will be made. Remeber it is better to lose early in the season rather than later.
To all you fans calling for the firing of CMR, will you still be making these statements if we win the East and play for an SEC title?

Bulldog fans are simply irrational when it comes to the realities of football. I warned many Dog friends what was coming, but they had already imbibed the Koolaid.
I am a long time Bulldog (76-80). What occurred in the Dome was exactly what should have happened. GA running backs? Questionable. GA receivers? Potentially good but untested = Questionable. GA “O” line? Thin on personnel and been in question for years now. GA “D”? 1 year in the 3/4 with more to learn = questionable.
Boise State? A well coached team, strong on all fundamentals and chock full of 5th year seniors (players – not “stars”) just itching to take down another big opponent. On top of that, their schemes are well designed and fit their personnel perfectly.
It was like watching a surgeon slice and dice, especially in the 2nd half.

Bobo has got to go. For that matter his boss has to go with him for not taking over and making the calls. Did anyone but me notice that when GA went to an I formation with the fullback that Murray thrived in the play action. I recall one drive that in 3 plays were down the field from the I. So what does Bobo call? Spread formation from shotgun the next 3 plays, how does the HC not see what the fans see. I am loyal and hope we can somehow pull off the upset this weekend. But i’m also realist and if we do lose this weekend I hope we don’t win another game this year. That’s what it will take to get some blood at GA. Going 8-4 or 7-5 might be enough to put up with this crap for another year. Open the checkbook and get Dan Mullens.

I don’t know if the most vocal of the critics here are trolls just trying to keep the pot boiling, or ‘actual’ Georgia fans that are so disappointed that they can’t help themselves and seem to think that the guys are doing this on purpose, but Jarvis Jones is right. The only thing that open, continuous, hammering of Richt, the coaches and players does is serve to demoralize everybody and, specifically, turn off players and their friends (aka: potential recruits).
Am I happy about the outcome, hell no. Do I believe that they can turn it around, I hope so, but one thing’s for damn sure and that I do know, nothing good comes from the constant caterwauling. Once attended a Georgia game with my wife, who didn’t usually go to the games…By the mid-point of the fourth quarter we were pretty-much out of it. I suggested to her that we could leave then and get a head start on the crowd…her response was immediate and enlightening…’The players can’t leave, so why should we?’ She was right…these are our guys…this is our school…and we’re all in this together. Keep working guys. Those of us that matter are with you…those that don’t matter, don’t and aren’t.
