Rewind: Richt says Dogs likely to stick with TB rotation of Samuel, then Crowell

MONDAY MORNING REWIND

Happy Labor Day everyone. Glad to see some rain coming our way. God knows we need it.

Not sure how much it will help the Georgia Bulldogs, however. After watching Saturday night’s debacle against Boise State, it’s clear they need all the practice they can get before No. 12 South Carolina comes rolling into Athens next weekend. The last thing they need is a bunch of thunderstorms to chase them inside.

Welcome to the “Monday Morning Rewind.” This will be regular feature during the season. It’s nothing fancy, just a forum to make sure you get a chance to see everything we’ve got on football coverage. We’ll offer some fresh news, notes and quotes along with links to the latest versions of stories we’ve written over the weekend and a few from elsewhere. So let’s get to it. . . .

THE MAIN THING

Head coach Mark Richt held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. As expected, the news was not good on linebacker Alec Ogletree: Broken foot, surgery on Monday, out four to six weeks.

My story for print was on this development and how it affects Georgia’s attempts to contain South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore this time around. I also do a formatted review/preview box called “UGA Rewind” for the print section every Monday. Click HERE to check it out.

I wasn’t able to fit in this comment from Richt about Ogletree, who had been one of the Bulldogs’ stars in preseason camp:

“I’ve texted him a little bit but did not talk to him today. His family is in town in preparation for the surgery tomorrow. I’m sure he’s hurt. He’s crushed right now because he loves to play the game and he was really playing outstanding football . He played inspired football and our defense really came out ready to play and had a lot of great energy and enthusiasm and had a lot of big hits early on. He was a big part of that.”

Ogletree reached out to Georgia fans via Facebook on Sunday night:

“Thanks for all the support from everyone. I will continue to fight and get well. As for the team we are on a mission and it is about to begin. God has a plan for us so lets keep working hard and show up next week when the cocks roll in.” #9

FIVE MORE THINGS

1. Richt isn’t planning any changes in the tailback rotation for the South Carolina game. That is, junior Richard Samuel will again get the start over freshman Isaiah Crowell, who was clearly the better runner with 60 yards on 15 carries (4.0 average). Samuel had 12 yards on seven carries but apparently was better with other aspects of playing the position.

“Probably not,” Richt said to changing starters. “But we’ll keep competing and keep getting better. There’s some things understandably that Isaiah has to get better at in the protection area., just knowing who to block and how to get it done. I thought he was eager to block and he did make some very nice blocks. There were a couople of times he missed an assignment here or there. But Richard needs reps, too. He didn’t practice a lot at the end [of preseason camp]. A linebacker blitzed a couple of times while we were blocking them with the tailback position and they didn’t make the sack but we weren’t really outstanding in our protection fundamentals. We’ve just got to keep working at it.”

Junior Carlton Thomas returns this week as well. Thomas, Georgia’s third-string tailback last season, missed the opener due to a disciplinary suspension.

2. Bacarri Rambo, as Richt confirmed AFTER Saturday’s game, was indeed suspended after all. And Richt speculated that the junior from Donalsonville, probably would return to the starting lineup at free safety. He started all 13 games there last season.

“Yeah, I think we would” Richt said of Rambo starting. “I say that but I guess I shouldn’t be premature on that. I’d have to talk to Coach [Scott] Lakatose and see if it’s a slam dunk. But Bacarri’s going to play, that’s for sure.”

3. Richt expects starting left guard Kenarious Gates to return this week from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the entire second half against Boise. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, the only other lineman with previous game experience, filled in admirably in Gates’ absence and will continue to play a big role.

4. Richt wasn’t necessarily anticipating a lineup change at split end, where junior Tavarres King struggled on Saturday. King, expected to be the Bulldogs’ main target among wideouts, dropped two passes and finished with one catch for three yards.

“The bottom like is we’ve still got a lot of faith in Tavarres,” Richt said. “But everybody at that position especially is talented and we think can make plays. So we’re going to compete and see who’s going to start. But all those guys are going to play and we just need to let them play. ”

Richt praised freshman Malcolm Mitchell, who finished with 64 yards on three catches and scored on 51-yard catch-and-run. He said they’ll continue look to get him the football.

5. Richt was still majorly annoyed with the play of the offensive line, which allowed six quarterback sacks and even more hurries and pressures. They didn’t run block particularly well either, all of which helped them to a 2-for-13 third-down conversion rate.

“Third down is your position down,” he said. “That’s where you’ve got to make your first downs and keep your drives going and put yourself in field goal range or give yourself a chance to score touchdowns. I just felt like we didn’t do a good job in that area. Even when got the ball off I still thought he was getting there were a lot of times people were breathing down his neck and hitting him after he cut the ball loose. . . . We’ve got to get better. . . . If you look at it from an overall offensive point of view, that was probably the thing that was the most troublesome to me.”

FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier also held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. The Gamecocks — after trailing 17-0 early — defeated East Carolina 56-37 in their opener played in Charlotte. Gainesville’s Connor Shaw started the game at quarterback but was relieved by the often-troubled-but-never-sidelined Stephen Garcia, who rallied them to victory.

Spurrier was pretty funny when asked Sunday about Richt’s well-being in light of Georgia losing 13 of its last 27 games.

“You know, I’ve got enough problems down here. I don’t think Coach Richt needs me to worry about him. I was worried about my job at halftime last night. How about that?”

Spurrier resisted any urge he might have had to needle Georgia for losing to Boise State 35-21.

“Georgia is still a very good team,” he said. “They just didn’t play their best. It wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t favored over us this week. They are a very good team. They are very capable of doing some big things this year.”

Spurrier was more impressed with Boise State and their Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Kellen Moore.

“That quarterback is very good. He throws that ball like he’s got a baseball in his hand. He’s got a real quick release and he just flicks it here and flicks it there. He knows where everybody is. He’s hard to sack. He’s just really a good player. You just have to admire watching those guys play. I love watching them play because they block, they tackle well, they play fundamentals, they are just about always in position, they don’t do stupid things. They just play the game the way you are supposed to. I may vote them No. 1 in the country after watching them beat Georgia . . . Maybe after watching Boise Staet play all week will allow our guys to see how you’re supposed to play this game.”

Here’s a game story in the Anderson Independent that provides some details on the Gamecocks’ win over East Carolina.

COMPLETE GAME WRAPUP

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

A reminder that these players are tuned in to what people say and write about them. Here is a message sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones posted on Facebook on Sunday:

“As I read some of the sport blogs, I see a many of the so-called Bulldawg fan comments. A lot of you all are some of the most un-loyal fans I’ve ever witnessed. If you want to trash us, don’t support us. Those who are loyal and willing to fight to the end with us will, we’re thankful for them. This from the heart. I dont care if you dont like it or me. My team is very passionate about what we do and we’re going to continue to fight.” — JJ #29

Attention all running backs being recruited by UGA:
This is how it will go for you. First and foremost you will need to block, because the O-line, despite averaging 330 lbs. will get pushed around and therefore it is up to you to protect Murray. Secondly, when you do get to run the football, it will straight up the middle into SEC defensive lines. Repeat on 2nd down. On 3rd and long is when you’ll need to do your primary task of protecting the qb who will be running for his life. Yes, it is too bad you have break away speed and could probably get to the edge for huge gains, but you’ll just have to set that dream aside. Just thought you should know.

Sorry about the typos in my previous post.

That 3-4 defense is a joke. I don’t understand why Richt chose to go with a 3-4 scheme. Why did he hire a guy with no DC experience in big time college football? Just because Saban pulled off the 3-4 doesn’t mean we should try it. Most of the players have never played 3-4. They are used to 4-3.

Folks, give Boise some credit. We didn’t lose to Utah State. They were ranked #5 for a reason. They had 16 returning starters, a quarterback who may be the best in the nation (at least in that system), and a senior-laden team that has been playing together for years. To throw in the towel and pitch tantrums like many are doing is silly.

I called down a guy Saturday night at the end of the game (yes, I stayed) for booing the team. I thanked him for “supporting” the team. People act like spoiled brats, expecting to win every game.

Jarvis Jones, I am with you and the rest of our team.

There are a few fundamentals that hurt GA from the start in the game and the program….First, Field position at the beginning of the game. Taking the ball with an untested backfield and basically untested receivers was a mistake. If the defense was supposed to be better. Stopping BS the first possession would have given good field position for the offense…We cannot run the KO back on the first possession every game.

Second. Weight and Height difference did make a difference. Shorter, quicker lineman have a tendency to be coached to get under the taller bigger players to immobilize their feet and this clogs up the play. If you have a 275 pound fb with a 240 pound tb running into a clog it is difficult. It is just simple science. You can’t block a bulldozer with a crain.

Third, on offense we are giving away our play calls. Most of the time if Crowell was in there we ran. The one time we did not he missed his block and QB got sacked. Other times when Samuel was there we passed. Throwing on first down for an incompletion usually is followed by a run. Why I have not clue. UGA’s offense is so predictable. If I can see that. I am certain Ellis Johnson can see it and definitely BS coaches saw it.

Using the db to run one play for 80 yards and a td was great…….NOT….. why only once??? or some fake off the play???? BS was set up to have to adjust to that play….They would have had to think about it or what else UGA was doing out of the set…Therefore creating something they would not have seen before and causing confusion among their defense. Kind of like UGA had a one trick….well…dawg…but nothing else. I hate the lack of imagination Bobo or Richt has on offense.

Players read these blogs. It is best for everyone if we start showing some support. So DAWGS know that alot of folks love you and support you no matter what. We will be there Saturday cheering on and we will be making it a hostile place for SC. That stadium is going to be rocking !!!!! The SC QB will have a lot of trouble calling the plays at the line.

Some advice to the DAWGS–

Look at this game against Boise like an exhibition game. It does not affect your SEC record. You can still do well in SEC EAST play and earn a chance to play in the Dome again with a national TV audience and show all the naysayers just what the DAWGS are all about. The pros get an exhibition season…so relax a little and don’t worry about the negative stuff. Stay positive and be very, very determined to get better. We can learn a lot from the Boise game and the Boise players…We got a lot of work to do and all the corrections and getting better that is needed to be done is going to take extra time. You can only spend 20 hrs per week with the coaches…You are going to need to work some on your own. Meet together as groups on your own—i.e. OL, QBs, WRs, LBs, DL etc.

Please watch extra film this week and know the tendencies of SC very well. Recognizing something a split second earlier might make a difference in making a TD or saving a TD. Make sure your teammates are in the film room with you. Don’t just watch a little extra film—watch a lot of film.

Make sure you know your assignments and make sure that you tackle and block well. Play fundamental football…OL if you need extra help with blocking–talk to the coaches and put in some extra time on your own this week as a group. We got to block better. We can’t miss critical blocks at critical times in the game… Defense–you tackled well to start the game–but at the end you were tired or just down about the score and there were missed tackles…You got to tackle well for 60 minutes not 45 minutes. Football is basic–block and tackle well. Offense we got to do better…WRs we got to get open–look at film and see how Boise was getting open. We got to get the running game going….talk to the coaches.

No penalties against SC–you will be at home at Sanford…Relax and play hard

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate before and during the game…drink gatorade even if you don’t want to. We cramped alot during the game…Did not see any Boise players cramping…We can do better.

Getting in shape…We got tired during the no huddle and at the end of the game…We got to get in better shape…don’t wait for the coaches to tell you everything to do….Go to the coaches as a group and say we were embarassed and we want to be in better shape…find out some things to do this…if needed start running extra on your own, lifting extra on your own, make sure you are eating the right kind of foods…If Boise can kick our butt–then we can learn from them and get in better shape. It will pay off for you.

Have a player only team meeting and decide what you can do to get better and work as family. Make darn sure the no one gets down on the sideline..I don’t want to see any sad faces etc if SC gets a lead…I saw too many sad faces at the Dome on the sidelines and there was plenty of time left on the clock. If you hit and caused a fumble and got a quick score or INT for quick score you could have been right back in the game…remember anything can happen and things can turn quickly in a game..thats why you play hard for 60 minutes. I want to see all of you on the sidelines with the eye the tiger !!!

Now let’s get up on the ground and go out do everything this week to win Saturday. We love you and support you….Go DAWGS !!!!!!!

The Boise State staff came to Bama this off season for exchange of coaching ideas and it wasn’t just a one way deal. Nick Saban and Coach Peterson said they learned a lot from the meetings. You folks aren’t mad at Nick or you? Just pay the guy 500k per year until he’s paid what you owe him just like Bama did Shula and fix the damn problem. Mark Richt is a very fine person but he’s not a top level HC and UGA can be topsheld if the admin will manup and do what they must.

It may have been one game against a top 5 team, but I don’t see much reason for hope.

I hope the players know we are behind them and hope they can get it done. It’s not their fault. The blame for the last couple of seasons is on the coaches. UGA has plenty of talented players. The same can’t be said of the coaches. Name for me any program that has been trying to hire Bobo or Grantham. If they were any good, other schools would be after them to be HC.

I just love the Richt apologists. They all act like we’ve competed for the NC the last 4 seasons. Here’s a reality check, we haven’t even been competitive in the SEC East during that time. The reason everyone’s seeing doom, is because that’s what we’ve seen for years. There is absolutely no evidence that this team will do anything but fold against USCe and every other team on the schedule that has a winning record. Check the numbers. Blind allegiance to an incompetent leader only perpetuates mediocrity. Most, if not all of those calling for a coaching change are dyed in the wool fans. They don’t want this coaching charade to go on. Richt has proven he’s lost his edge and he doesn’t have a clue about evaluating coaching talent. I can’t for next week’s round of how we’ll win the NC and the SEC title despite starting 0-2.

Hey, Jarvis Jones, go ahead and bite the hand that literally feeds you. Such a typical response from our entitled collection of so-called 5-star athletes. I’d take 11 Kris Durhams and
Erk Russell any day. Delta is ready when you are Jarvis.

I want CMR to suceed and be the best coach in the history of college football! But..I’m afraid he is no longer a top tier coach. I believe the best coaching staff in all of college football was in the GA Dome saturday, wearing all white. We are not performing on the field. Isn’t that what he is getting paid to do. UGA has NO excuses plain and simple. If you want to be fair..How is UGA ever an underdog to Boise? COACHING!!! I wish Coach peterson was our coach.

Bobo’s father in law drops millions into uga, look it up. There is the truth, too bad it’s tearing this program apart. Pure talent have us on life support. Imagine what a real OC could do with some of the stars we had last few yrs? If we lose sat. And score fewer than 21 pts, he should resign. His resume has a blank line, then uga coach listed. He was never proven, and it may cost cmr his job.

It may just take us turning on the coaches VERY HARD this year to finally we get the change we all clamor for! We need a new head coach! Period. That would instill a new vigor, confidence, and certainly optimism that the future could be bright. We don’t have that now. Look what Mullen, Saban, Chizik, Spurrier, etc. have done to bring their programs to new heights while we have clamored in the middle of the pack. We need some new blood! Shoot, bring Mullen here!!!! He is full of fire and if he can win at Miss St. imagine his level of success with top level talent. Peterson is another coach worthy of pursuit. Richt’s tenure is seeing much of our top Georgia talent leaving for Clemson, Bama, and Auburn. The last time that happened Tennessee was supreme on Georgia talent. We have to stop the exodus!!!

I do not understand why Richt keeps blaming his offensive line for poor pass protection. He just does not get it. Bobo severely handicaps the Dawgs with third down and long situations with his absolutely horrible play calling. Bobo has to incorporate the short pass in the early downs to negate the third and long situations. We clearly have the superior athletes but they are being handcuffed by Bobo. Any average fan can see this, why can’t Richt?

Why waste a young man’s talent on a poor season because if we lose those two games I’m sure we will lose two to three more because of coaching.P.S. CMR,please sign 4 to 6 more O/L this year. My thoughts watching him in the stadium were should we send our players to play for other schools during the pre-season so they will be able to play for us

He is the best guy we have on defense

Please move Samuel back to LB. Face it he is no RB. for a big guy he runs like a 180lb back- no forward lean & always seems to get stoped on the 1st contact. Please CMR move him back to defense. If you need a another RB move B. Boykin there it worked out well for Robert Edwards

We will continue to lose unless we catch up with the way football is played today.
When was the last time Richt’s coached team did the following:

1. Block a FG
2. Block a Punt
3. Use our RB’s to run instead of block
4. Run the I formation consistantly
5. Screen pass
6. Short pass to our TE’s
7. Change the scheme to meet your personnel’s strengths

We did finally run the no-huddle, but it took way too long to develop.
Bobo has got to go go. His style of offense is out dated. He is too easy to defend against and Coach Richt is too hard headed to make changes.
Once again we played without passion and discipline.
Oh, and the dreadlocks and helmets that keep coming off are a disgrace.
If we do make a change, it needs to be a proven winner, not an assistant coach.
A winner, a guy with fire, discipline, motivation and knowledge.
I’d make only 1 phone call. John Gruden…..name your price.

News flash to Jarvis Jones, This is not the first game that the Dogs have been completely out played, out coached and to be honest never in a position to win the game, I think most fans were disapointed that the Dogs showed no improvement from last year after a lot of hype about the dream team and how much better the D was going to be, Jarvis will probably get his feelings hurt again next week if South Carolina beats the Dogs in Athens and I’m sure they will be favored.

Most of the time, the higher ranked team wins. Pre-season rankings are usually based on last years performance and returning players (Dream Team hype pushed GA up) Every once in a while the lower ranked team wins. Just remember, SC is ranked higher than GA this week.
If there had not been so much hype on these blogs about NC and SEC East championships, everyone would not be so upset with losing to Boise and SC, but the lack of team cohesion and progress from last year combined with the hype regarding freshmen football players is deadly to morale. Remember that Latimore came into a team with a GOOD offensive line.

I can’t thank Boise and Coach Pete enough for giving me the perfect game plan to be Georgia. After I study the film I’ll have Georgia running in circles and making Grantham wish he had never heard of the SEC much less try to coach in this league.

Our defense will feast on that fat, slow out of shape offensive line. Bobo is so predicable, we will harrase Murray when 22 plays and stop Crowell when he tries to run. You just know Crowell will only be in to run because he sure can’t block. He must have taken lessons from that offensive line, cause they can’t block either—–see’ya Sat.

If you want the players to feel the support, then get them coaches that will put them in the position to win.

It’s what everyone wants.

Players commit to UGA, and UGA must commit to them. What do you think this very talented team would do if they had Peterson and co. on the sidelines? Win the SEC east for starters. Those Boise players knew exactly what to do on every play, and did it. They played as a team, not a just a group of talented individuals. That is all due to coaching. I know it is like broken record here. I do hope the players know that the boos at the game were directed at the play calling, and not them. I’m not even calling for Richt’s firing, but he must be the leader he supposed to be and make tough decisions about his staff. He owes it to the players, the fans and everyone associated with the program. I am sure the UGA fans will pack the house and be loud in Athens on Saturday, but after a while the repeated frustrating incompetence of the coaches will get to even the best of fans.

There’s an old saying, Never judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes. I’m not going to sit hear, and run Coach Richt down, or any of the other coaches, for one thing its counter productive. Tell me does it make you feel better to come on here and vent your dislikes? Well it doesn’t make me fill any better, and another thing, you say your not talking about the players, but when you rundown someone that those players lookup to, then yes you might as well slap them in the face. Have you ever been around someone that you liked, then have someone run them down? Well it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I suggest if you have a problem, speak with your money, not your mouth, because your just blowing in the wind. Most of you probably don’t even support Georgia with your money. All you can do is come on here crying like a baby. Man get a life, football is just a game, if you make it a priority in your life, then you are one sad person. I suggest you find something else in life to fill your time, because I don’t care who is the coach, you will never be happy.

Did they play good Saturday absolutely not do they deserve to be given up on after one game against one of the best teams in the nation absolutely not. I’ll pull for them not against them all year long regardless of the record and i’ll support our coaches until the day there gone. I think Richt actually wants to be bought out. I thought so last year. He doesn’t do what it takes to be prepared. His staff knows it, and the players know it. He wants out….for the right price. then he goes the way of Mike Shula. QB coach for some NFL team. It’s just unfortunate that UGA players have to suffer through this.

Being a rabid Dawg fan I was willing to buy into the hype. I was desperate for a return to glory! I put the abysmal disaster of that embarrassing bowl choke behind as much as possible. I listened to all the preseason lies. So desperate was I to believe. I actually was semi confidant heading into the regular season opener. The illusion lasted exactly one offensive series. Three penalties in that series. Three! If that is not coaching what is it? I witnessed a worse group than the one that stumbled in the bowl defeat. Much worse in my opinion. Arrogance from a bunch as pathetic as this one is far worse than pitiful. This team plays stupid and with no pride. It is true that a team takes on attributes of its coach. Mark Wretch was as lost on sidelines as ever before. Staring into space without a clue. All the emotion of a concrete brick. If anything this unit is worse that the 2010 edition. If Wretch has any feeling for the UGA program and fans he should do the Christian thing by tendering his resignation immediately. His heart is simply not with the Dawgs any more. Otherwise it is going to be another nightmare campaign. Just as I predicted last year after Wretch was given another reprieve. The Bulldog Nation deserves so much better!

I am NOT spending any more of my money on watching the Dawgs play.! NOTHING has changed since the embarrassing loss to Central Florida to end last yeatr’s miserable season. The Dawgs have become the worse coached team in the SEC. How many millions has UGA wasted on their new defewnsive co-ordinator? The defense stinks! No creativity on offense, nothing they showed us saturday night tells me that this team has improved. After all these months to prepare for Boise our BUlldogs laid a big rotten egg in the dome.

RICHARD SAMUEL IS NOT A TAILBACK. JUST LIKE MIKE BOBO IS NOT AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. SOMEBODY BETTER BUCK UP AND TAKE OVER THE PLAY-CALLING.

Nub,

your original post at 7:26 was as well put as could be. I have been a dawg fan my entire life. JJ is young and has some life lessons to learn.

Cooter,
Some of the post on here go a little overboard but we have every right to criticize the coaching staff. I have tried my best to stay in Richt’s corner but have just about lost the faith. We were clearly out coached Saturday night!!

JJ,

Quit reading the blogs and worry about playing football!!!

Very surprised @ what I’m hearing from Dawg fans! 1st off, the Dawgs just faced a Beast @ the qb position! Kellen Moore may be the best qb on the country! He made ga pay underneath all day long! He’s a surgeon wit a football! He carved up VaTech last year! It’s just 1 game, & not the end of the world! U knew that the o-line may have been a weekness! No 1 wants 2 lose, but Boise could beat any team in the nation, 1 time! Let’s get ready & keep these guys motivated 2 beat sc on sat. Go Dawgs!

Boise State is winless against the SEC… they’ve never SEEN size and speed of the SEC, UGA will destroy BSU. 48-21.

They beat VT last year, but it was close, and VT is so weak, playing in the cupcake ACC.

Boise plays in the mountain west bumblef$%$ conference and they lost to NEVADA!!! We’ll kill them.

Flat tire on I-95—tell us some things the players can do to get better….All you know how to say is fire the coach……Let’s see some real football comments instead of whine, whine, whine

And Dumb Jean shorts——what ideas do you have to make UGA better….fire the coach is not an option because we don’t hire and fire brother……do you know football…what can the players do to
get better ??

Who are some possible candidates for new head coach?

CMR did thid to himself, hiring inept coaches Marinez, Bobo, Grantham, Bryan McClendon a wide out to coach running backs and the list goes on and on.

UGA keeps doing the old hire former players to coach because they need a job. Florida stopped this practice when they decided they wanted to be serious contenders.

Also the fire and drive that you must possess to be a winner is just gone from Richt.

UGA no more silly excues, we must develop a winning attitude or everything else is lost.

No.7 Utah vs No.4 Alabama
Perfect Utah Rolls Past Alabama in Sugar Bowl 31-17. You Bama fans have a selective memory, but I guess a SEC team can’t lose to a smaller college can they?

We have talented players. We lack leadership. The Ole Miss game will define the dawgs. Dawgs and Ole Miss about on same level now.
