MONDAY MORNING REWIND
Happy Labor Day everyone. Glad to see some rain coming our way. God knows we need it.
Not sure how much it will help the Georgia Bulldogs, however. After watching Saturday night’s debacle against Boise State, it’s clear they need all the practice they can get before No. 12 South Carolina comes rolling into Athens next weekend. The last thing they need is a bunch of thunderstorms to chase them inside.
Welcome to the “Monday Morning Rewind.” This will be regular feature during the season. It’s nothing fancy, just a forum to make sure you get a chance to see everything we’ve got on football coverage. We’ll offer some fresh news, notes and quotes along with links to the latest versions of stories we’ve written over the weekend and a few from elsewhere. So let’s get to it. . . .
THE MAIN THING
Head coach Mark Richt held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. As expected, the news was not good on linebacker Alec Ogletree: Broken foot, surgery on Monday, out four to six weeks.
My story for print was on this development and how it affects Georgia’s attempts to contain South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore this time around. I also do a formatted review/preview box called “UGA Rewind” for the print section every Monday. Click HERE to check it out.
I wasn’t able to fit in this comment from Richt about Ogletree, who had been one of the Bulldogs’ stars in preseason camp:
“I’ve texted him a little bit but did not talk to him today. His family is in town in preparation for the surgery tomorrow. I’m sure he’s hurt. He’s crushed right now because he loves to play the game and he was really playing outstanding football . He played inspired football and our defense really came out ready to play and had a lot of great energy and enthusiasm and had a lot of big hits early on. He was a big part of that.”
Ogletree reached out to Georgia fans via Facebook on Sunday night:
“Thanks for all the support from everyone. I will continue to fight and get well. As for the team we are on a mission and it is about to begin. God has a plan for us so lets keep working hard and show up next week when the cocks roll in.” #9
FIVE MORE THINGS
1. Richt isn’t planning any changes in the tailback rotation for the South Carolina game. That is, junior Richard Samuel will again get the start over freshman Isaiah Crowell, who was clearly the better runner with 60 yards on 15 carries (4.0 average). Samuel had 12 yards on seven carries but apparently was better with other aspects of playing the position.
“Probably not,” Richt said to changing starters. “But we’ll keep competing and keep getting better. There’s some things understandably that Isaiah has to get better at in the protection area., just knowing who to block and how to get it done. I thought he was eager to block and he did make some very nice blocks. There were a couople of times he missed an assignment here or there. But Richard needs reps, too. He didn’t practice a lot at the end [of preseason camp]. A linebacker blitzed a couple of times while we were blocking them with the tailback position and they didn’t make the sack but we weren’t really outstanding in our protection fundamentals. We’ve just got to keep working at it.”
Junior Carlton Thomas returns this week as well. Thomas, Georgia’s third-string tailback last season, missed the opener due to a disciplinary suspension.
2. Bacarri Rambo, as Richt confirmed AFTER Saturday’s game, was indeed suspended after all. And Richt speculated that the junior from Donalsonville, probably would return to the starting lineup at free safety. He started all 13 games there last season.
“Yeah, I think we would” Richt said of Rambo starting. “I say that but I guess I shouldn’t be premature on that. I’d have to talk to Coach [Scott] Lakatose and see if it’s a slam dunk. But Bacarri’s going to play, that’s for sure.”
3. Richt expects starting left guard Kenarious Gates to return this week from an ankle injury that sidelined him for the entire second half against Boise. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, the only other lineman with previous game experience, filled in admirably in Gates’ absence and will continue to play a big role.
4. Richt wasn’t necessarily anticipating a lineup change at split end, where junior Tavarres King struggled on Saturday. King, expected to be the Bulldogs’ main target among wideouts, dropped two passes and finished with one catch for three yards.
“The bottom like is we’ve still got a lot of faith in Tavarres,” Richt said. “But everybody at that position especially is talented and we think can make plays. So we’re going to compete and see who’s going to start. But all those guys are going to play and we just need to let them play. ”
Richt praised freshman Malcolm Mitchell, who finished with 64 yards on three catches and scored on 51-yard catch-and-run. He said they’ll continue look to get him the football.
5. Richt was still majorly annoyed with the play of the offensive line, which allowed six quarterback sacks and even more hurries and pressures. They didn’t run block particularly well either, all of which helped them to a 2-for-13 third-down conversion rate.
“Third down is your position down,” he said. “That’s where you’ve got to make your first downs and keep your drives going and put yourself in field goal range or give yourself a chance to score touchdowns. I just felt like we didn’t do a good job in that area. Even when got the ball off I still thought he was getting there were a lot of times people were breathing down his neck and hitting him after he cut the ball loose. . . . We’ve got to get better. . . . If you look at it from an overall offensive point of view, that was probably the thing that was the most troublesome to me.”
FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier also held his weekly teleconference on Sunday. The Gamecocks — after trailing 17-0 early — defeated East Carolina 56-37 in their opener played in Charlotte. Gainesville’s Connor Shaw started the game at quarterback but was relieved by the often-troubled-but-never-sidelined Stephen Garcia, who rallied them to victory.
Spurrier was pretty funny when asked Sunday about Richt’s well-being in light of Georgia losing 13 of its last 27 games.
“You know, I’ve got enough problems down here. I don’t think Coach Richt needs me to worry about him. I was worried about my job at halftime last night. How about that?”
Spurrier resisted any urge he might have had to needle Georgia for losing to Boise State 35-21.
“Georgia is still a very good team,” he said. “They just didn’t play their best. It wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t favored over us this week. They are a very good team. They are very capable of doing some big things this year.”
Spurrier was more impressed with Boise State and their Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Kellen Moore.
“That quarterback is very good. He throws that ball like he’s got a baseball in his hand. He’s got a real quick release and he just flicks it here and flicks it there. He knows where everybody is. He’s hard to sack. He’s just really a good player. You just have to admire watching those guys play. I love watching them play because they block, they tackle well, they play fundamentals, they are just about always in position, they don’t do stupid things. They just play the game the way you are supposed to. I may vote them No. 1 in the country after watching them beat Georgia . . . Maybe after watching Boise Staet play all week will allow our guys to see how you’re supposed to play this game.”
Here’s a game story in the Anderson Independent that provides some details on the Gamecocks’ win over East Carolina.
COMPLETE GAME WRAPUP
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
A reminder that these players are tuned in to what people say and write about them. Here is a message sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones posted on Facebook on Sunday:
“As I read some of the sport blogs, I see a many of the so-called Bulldawg fan comments. A lot of you all are some of the most un-loyal fans I’ve ever witnessed. If you want to trash us, don’t support us. Those who are loyal and willing to fight to the end with us will, we’re thankful for them. This from the heart. I dont care if you dont like it or me. My team is very passionate about what we do and we’re going to continue to fight.” — JJ #29

Typical trash on ajc blogs you people love the team when things are going good but you turn your back at the first sign of adversity. Give credit where credit is due boise st was a darn good team and kellen moore deserves all of the praise he is getting. You people act like uga lost to a scrub. That game is over time to focus on scar garcia is nowhere near the type of player of kellen moore is. Its funny how “fan” reaction is totally different on paysites as compared to here. Since everybody is such lifelong fans and you are so upset with saturdays game how about you sell me your tickets and save yourself some extra heartache and pain

14-13 the last 27 games.
13-12 the last 5 years vs SEC East.
You say now after game 1 that you are sure that there will be major changes made. But, no one else, just you Cooter55, can say that now just after game 1.

I’m not saying I am pleased, but jeez you guys act like we got beat by Louisiana munroe or something. This is a team that proved that it is one of the best teams in the nation. Even if Georgia had it’s best game, I’m not sure we win.

Since you are so happy with us, posting under a different name now discredited for life that you are sure that there will be major changes made, why don’t you give up your season tickets – if you ever had them which I have read nothing to ever indicate – to those who actually are giving and have been giving the 3 and half million dollars to Mark Richt every year, and expect for that better than 13-12 the last 5 years vs SEC East and better than 14-13 vs all teams the last 27 games. You are the problem around here. You are a 2-faced poster who holds everyone else to a different standard than you hold yourself to. And, you also by the way care more about Mark Richt than you do our football players, our football fans and our football program.

When South Carolina beats us next Saturday, I would like to see the whole coaching staff turn in letters of resignation. UGA deserves better than this staff has given us. On the opening drive with Boise St., we looked as poorly coached as I have ever seen UGA. Three penealties on the opening drive made us look liked we hadn’t practiced since last year.

Jarvis spoke the truth about Dawg fans. We have waited 9 months for this and after one game the bandwagon is empty. If you do not support the program now feel free to stay away. Still a ton to play for this year and the attitude that has been displayed is beyond pathetic. Simply many of you after one game are a embarassment to this program and university.

I think we are trying to be too smart on offense. The “Hurry up Offense” isn’t very fast, when everyone is pointing at the defense for 20-30 seconds. Didn’t see Boise State doing that. They came up to the line and ran their play.

It’s funny to me that people defend the coaches and say things like “after one game.” Some people on here act like we have been great for the past several years, beating UF consistently, winning the east and after losing ONE game everybody has turned their backs. This ship begin to sink 5 years ago. There has been time to right the ship and it is still sinking, not because of one game but because of the last 5 years.

Until Georgia’s coaching staff understands that the key to victory is a clock managing, ball control offense that gasses the opposing defense, we’ll continue to have 3rd and 8’s against good defenses … and the majority of teams we play have good defenses. Look how excellently Peterson had Boise control the ball – none of Moore’s passes exceeded 15 yards. No, Georgia has to go for the spectacular 60 yard play, each and every time. The best defense in the world .. no matter who it is … is going to get gassed if they’re always on the field. Little 6 and 7 yard passes to RBs and tight ends – is that so inconceivable for Georgia to try? Those little passes have Kellen Moore in Heisman trophy contention. “All of nothing” type of offense is going to get you beat most of the time against superior teams.

LowCountry i for one am not turning on this coaching staff and team after one game. I turned on this head coach the day he promoted his best friend to D.C.,and i really turned on him the day he promoted BoBo from Q.B. coach to O.C. This head coach has proven with every hire he has made with the exception of Van Gorder that he has no clue how to evaluate coaching talent. A CEO is judged by the people he hires and by the people he surrounds himself with. If you can’t see that this guy is a terrible head coach by now, then god help you. BoBo, and Martinez brought this program to it’s knees, and now this Grantham and Bobo will destroy it this season. I was at the Dome and the excitement before and at the start of that game shows the passion UGA fans have, but UGA fans deserve much more than Richt and this pathetic coaching staff he has assembled. It all starts at the top, and you can sugarcoat it all you want, but Richt is a failure as a head coach and a CEO. Look at UGA’S coordinators and that’s all you need to know about Richt. Bobo and Grantham are the 2 worst coordinators in the SEC, and that includes Vandy. Bobo”s play calling has no plan or reason, and Grantham is nothing but hot air. This big mouth wouldn’t know how to bring pressure if he tried. If you want more proof of Richt’s lack of ability to be a head coach, try listening to him laugh at his post game press conference after he and his coaching staff got totally embarrassed on national t.v. This guy is destroying this program, and if you want to support him, that is fine. But don’t get on a blog and criticize fans that pay alot of hard earned money to support this program, and they get this pathetic product that these coaches are putting on the field. If you want even more evidence of what a pathetic leader Richt is, how about him calling out his inept O.L. and criticizing in public how terrible the line play is. Oh, i forgot, didn’t the wonderful Richt that “Knows what the Hell he is doing” just hire this high school O.L. coach? Richt didn’t even interview anyone else, and he hired this loser because he was a friend of Bobo’s and he is the guy BoBo wanted. I think that is all anyone needs to know about Richt and his head coaching ability. This clown has thrown everyone under the bus, even his latest hire, but the one person he should have thrown under the bus when he finally fired his best friend was BoBo. He is waiting to do that at the end of this season, but don’t think he will get that chance. If McGarity doens’t do something after S.C. runs all over this team in Athens, then he should go back to Florida as well.

I think the players should understand that most fans are not trashing on them but on the coaching staff. Boise proved it does not take 3,4 and 5 stars to be a great team. What it does take is motivation, execution, emotion, toughness and basic fundamentals of blocking and tackling. The staff in Athens right now does not do this well right now. It’s not the players at fault here, they are the ones that have worked their fannies off this summer. The staff is simply inept at teaching these skills and making adjustments during a game on both sides of the ball.

We as fans are also tired of being lied to. All of the news, propaganda, coming out of Athens every year is how great we are going to be. Example: Joe Cox is going to be a great leader and QB. Our OL is gelling and will be the back bone of the team. With our great new NG we will be able to get all kinds of pressure on the QB. ALL LIES!

I love the “real fans” who say don’t be critical, and let me buy your tickets. I have had season tickets for 11 years since graduating, believe that gives me more reason to be critical, I have some skin in the game. Easy to “not get critical” when you don’t help support the program financially.
That being said, I think this could be a good season, depending on mental toughness of the team. Think 10-2 possible but not likely.
I can’t be at the game Saturday so if the I will never complain fan wants tickets, pair can be had for $500, lower level section 136. Now since you never complain, you won’t mind my price. Let me know if interested.

I appreciate Jarvis Jones’ comments. He played an outstanding game as far as individual stats are concerned. Unfortunately, football is a team sport. All 11 people have to do their job on the field. However, it is not just the players…it is coaches too.
Losing a game happens to every team. Fans just don’t want to see Georgia get out worked and out coached. I believe Georgia has just as much talent as many teams in the Nation. The problem has been getting to translate that talent onto the field.
Some individuals really showed flashes. Crowell had a nice game. Not great, but nice. Mitchell showed skill. Charles is Charles. “Tree” showed heart. J.J. had a good game. We simply could not adjust to what BSU was doing. Adjustments are a coaches job.

Apparently Richt has no control over his players’ cell phones. These hostile tweets are counter productive and indicative of the team’s personality. This team humiliated the University, not by losing the game, but by sloppy, half-hearted play. The spectacle of over weight linemen patting their helmets because they wanted out of the game, probably had Wally Butts rolling in his grave.

Has Bobo stepped down yet? He kept our D on the field all night. I love the play calling, after Crowell rushed for 8 on first down Bobo calls three straight run plays w/ Samual up the middle and we get stuffed on 4th and 1. God forbid we continue to run what works. He is a great QB coach but an overmatched SEC OC. Step down and let CMR call the plays the rest of the way. Would you want your wagon hitched to Bobo w/ your job on the line? I’m sure he is a great guy and dad but they are getting paid to win football games. Make it happen!

Lots to say and unfortunately not much of it is positive-
Is Ken Malcome unable to play?
Is a hurry up offense smart when your goal should be to keep the opposing Heisman candidate on the sideline as much as possible? Not to mention, the hurry up is not a hurry up if you take forever to do it….
Is it wrong to rush the punter if he takes several steps repeatedly?
What about quick slants/bubble screens to take advantage of not being able to block their D line?
Is there a play in our book that would call for Figgins to lead Crowell outside say, more than once per game?
Running into the line is a very good way to get nothing..just ask Carlton Thomas…..Speed merchant with his speed neutralized by calling runs up the gut. Send your speed guys outside !!
once again i can predict which plays our Offense will call 9 out of 10 times. the only play i missed on was the Boykin run. I had that as a run up the middle. Damn you Boykin!
Most all of this could be done with simple adjustments during the game. If I can see it why can’t the coaching staff?

Let’se real. Who thought last years team could beat a top 5 team? Add some freshmen, and all of a sudden we can beat top ranked teams? That’s logic is crazy.
The fact is our coordinators suck. Bobo and Grantham just haven’t gotten the job done. It’s particularly bothersome that Grantham is so bad. Makes me long for Willie M.
Martinez has to be laughing. He is coaching a top ranked team while UGA is staring down another loosing season.
How can we be so thin at LB, O-Line, RB, etc. How can we be thin at so many positions. Are we really going to play a walkon at inside LB? Every year it’s the same thing. We’re thin at all these positions. Don’t we get 85 schollys?
Like Spurrier once said, “What happens to all those talented athletes that UGA recruits.” I wonder the same thing.

You do realize we played the #5 team in the country right? You do realize we where 6-7 last year? If you truly thought that just because we were UGA and they where Boise we would show up and win then you have not payed much attention the past three years of football.
UGA didnt look great Saturday I will give you that, but that is not the point. The point is after ONE game look at 90% of these posts. You can say well its the overrall record the past 27 games, or its CMR’s haircut, or his sideline demeanor, or laughing walking off the field after the lose Saturday night. Not clueless here or ignoring some of this as a reality.
The fact is though that it was ONE game. Coming out of last season with these first two games I clearly hoped for a 1-1 start. If any of you guys assumed we where going to come out 2-0 then thats your fault for not having realistic expectations for this program trying to gain traction back. Couple that with the significant loses we had in personel.
We may get beat this week, and weeks on after but McGarity will access the situation and make any changes if needed. I simply know I wait 8 months a year to get to watch the Dawgs play 12 times (13 if I am lucky, 14 if we are truly lucky) a year. So why after ONE game do I wanna act like “Chicken Freakin Little”?
