After Georgia’s 35-21 loss to Boise State was in the books and the Bulldogs had slogged their way back to their locker room in the depths of the Georgia Dome, senior cornerback Brandon Boykin stood up in the center of the room and yelled for his teammates’ attention.
“Before Coach Richt talked, I just told them we have a whole season left to play,” said Boykin, one of four captains for the game. “I told them, ‘this was a hyped game and everybody wanted us to do what we’re supposed to do, but it didn’t happen. We can’t get our heads down because we’ve got a whole season to go.’ Everybody’s positive now and we’re going to be ready for this next ballgame.
Boykin certainly did all he could. The cornerback from Fayetteville, in addition to playing the whole game on defense and finished with six tackles, a pass breakup and a tackle for loss, also ended up with 190 all purpose yards.
Eighty yards came on the first and only offensive play of Boykin’s career, a touchdown on a counter play after lining up in the backfield.
“That’s something we worked on,” Boykin said. “I was just fortunate for it to open up like it did with the blocking and everything. But the bottom line is it means nothing because we didn’t win the game. But if coach Richt or Coach Bobo wants me to play offense any time I’m all for it.”
Samuel gets starting nod over Crowell
Junior Richard Samuel said he was surprised to get the start at tailback over freshman Isaiah Crowell at tailback.
“I was surprised because I felt like he got more reps than me the last two weeks,” said Samuel, who was sidelined a quadriceps injury toward the end of preseason camp. “We run an equal rotation at the position but, yeah, I was a little bit surprised.”
Samuel, who played his first two seasons on offense, was moved from linebacker late this summer after attrition robbed Georgia of its top two rushers from last season, Washaun Ealey and Caleb King. Samuel opened the game with a two-yard run. He finished with 12 yards on seven carries.
Crowell had impressed his coaches and teammates while getting the majority of work with the No. 1 offense during the preseason. He came in the game on Georgia’s second possession and lost a yard on his first carry.
“Aaron [Murray] tripped me a little bit,” he said with a slight chuckle.
But overall Crowell fared a little better, finishing with 60 yards on 15 carries. So he could get the nod against South Carolina.
“It was tough to find holes,” he said. “Boise did a good job running to the ball.”
Injuries take toll
Starting inside linebacker Alec Ogletree left early in the first quarter with an injury to his right foot. Early indications are Ogletree is doubtful for next week. The majority of Ogletree’s snaps were filled by walk-on Jeremy Sulek and junior Michael Gilliard.
Also late in the first half, Boykin and the other starting inside linebacker, Christian Robinson, went down with injuries. Both players returned in the second half. Robinson said he got a “couple of hip-pointers.”
“Between Christian Robinson and Ogletree, we couldn’t really afford to lose one of those two guys,” Richt said. “The drop off was going to be pretty steep, with true freshmen and a walk-on in there. They’re good kids and they’re busting their tails, but it was a position we felt we really couldn’t afford that type of an injury.”
Richt did not know the extent of Ogletree’s injury. His right foot was in a walking boot after the game.
Starting left guard Kenarious Gates left the game with a “lower left leg” injury in the second quarter. That was also an area the Bulldogs could ill-afford an injury. Gates was expected to be Georgia’s fill-in if a tackle went out with an injury. Sophomore Dallas Lee, who previously hasn’t played in a game, replaced Gates.
“Gates leaving was not good for Georgia and not good for Gates,” Richt said. “But Dallas [Lee] was a guy we felt comfortable could go in there and play guard. I’ll have to watch the film to see how he did.”
First-timers
Seven true freshmen made their debut for Georgia in the first half: wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell — who started — cornerback Nick Marshall, safety Corey Moore, cornerback Damian Swann, cornerback Chris Sanders, inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera and Crowell.
Several other players played in their first games. Junior college transfer nose guard John Jenkins, redshirt freshman defensive backs Mark Deas and Connor Norman, linebacker Kosta Vavlas, wide receiver Michael Bennett and wide receiver Michael Erdman. Also sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones started following a redshirt season in 2010 after transferring from USC.
The Bulldogs had five first-time starters. On offense, WR Marlon Brown, OG Chris Burnette and Mitchell lined up during the first play of the game. Mitchell was not in the game on the first snap, but the original first down play was called back after a false start penalty. CB Jordan Love lined up for Georgia its first down on defense.
Rambo, Thomas don’t play
Free safety Bacarri Rambo and tailback Carlton Thomas both were held out due to suspensions for unspecified violations of team rules. Both will be back for South Carolina.
Richt had confirmed Thomas’ suspension but didn’t say anything about Rambo until after Saturday’s game.
“He is eligible to play next week,” Richt said. “He was suspended for the first game for the usual team rules violation. Carlton Thomas will play next week, too.”
Rambo started all 13 games at free safety last season. Thomas was Georgia’s leading returning rusher, but was not expected to start this season
Bobo back in press box
Mike Bobo was calling plays from the pressbox again on Saturday. It was part of a ploy by Georgia to play a hurry-up offense and make call from above.
The Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator had been calling plays from the sidelines since October of 2009, when he moved down to the field midway through the season “to get a better feel of things” and talk face-to-face with quarterback Joe Cox after a few poor offensive efforts in a row.
Now in his fourth season as Georgia’s offensive coordinator and 11th as quarterbacks , Bobo started out coaching from the press box in 2007 and 2008.
Rocking in the ATL
Georgia-Boise State wasn’t the only game in town this weekend. In fact, there were all kinds of events taking place in Atlanta, including a Braves game, Dragon*Con, the Black Gay Pride Parade and NASCAR racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Also, the Sports Radio 680 The Fan was organized a concert in Centenniel Olympic Park for the rock band O.A.R. Needless to say, downtown Atlanta was jam-packed and jamming on Saturday.
All of which made Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan very happy. He hadn’t taken an official census, but he was pretty certain all the major downtown hotels were booked Friday and Saturday night.
“There are 12,000 rooms downtown and I can’t imagine there’s one of them that has availability,” Stokan said on the Georgia Dome field before the game. “Imagine what it’s going to be like next year when we have two games.”
Next year the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game will hold a doubleheader on this weekend, with games between Auburn-Clemson and Tennessee-N.C. State. And yes, Dragon*Con.
What the Big Dawg ate
Georgia’s new head nutritionist Jenn Ketterly traveled with the team and planned all the Bulldogs’ meals in advance of and after Saturday’s game, down to what kind of oil in which to cook the food.
UGA stayed at the Omni Hotel downtown and Ketterly dictated every meal the Bulldogs ate while there. She said Saturday’s pregame meal was chicken, steak, green beans, roasted potatoes, macaroni and cheese and a full fruit bar.
Scene and heard
Tight end Orson Charles was rocking a newly-acquired mohawk haircut. Perhaps in honor of UGA’s “spread the red” promotion for the game, it was dyed red. . . . UGA legend Herschel Walker and former Boise State star defensive end Ryan Winterswyk delivered the official game ball in pregame ceremony. They were actually driven to midfield in a car. . . . Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal announced that it was time for the kickoff. . . . Georgia won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. . . . Former Bulldogs fullback Shaun Chapas (Dallas Cowboys) and tailback Caleb King (Minnesota Vikings) were cut by their respective teams on Saturday. . . . Before Saturday, Georgia was 7-8 in domes, including 4-3 at the Georgia Dome. Two of those wins clinched SEC championships.

I have watched the Dawgs several years and I agree about all the hype with these recruits over the years is that. JUST HYPE! That has to be the SLOWEST Off/Def lines the past 2 seasons, I have ever seen in 15 years. Both groups couldn’t move out of their own shadows without blowing wind! And Off linemen, get freaking bigger splits! Giver #1 some place to run and keep A Murray upright long enough to find a guy open. King needs to be benched! Insert Malcolm. And Defense, the leading tackler doesn’t need to be a defensive back! When he makes the tackle it’s 10 yards too late! Robinson is soft, the DLine needs to get nasty. Heck the entire team does. Don’t be surprised if Clowney isn’t in the backfield the enitire day next Saturday. I say go after Va Tech’s Bud Foster as the new HC! Things would change then! GATA Dawgs!!!

We were lied to by the Georgia coaches. That’s a firing offense. There didn’t appear to be any strength and conditioning improvement. The Boise no-huddle offense proved we were not in condition to play. The horrible game-plan that Richt-Bobo brought was inadequate, particularly since Georgia had been preparing (presumably) for eight months for this game. Moore ate us up with pin-point passing — so much for Grantham’s defensive improvement — no pressure on Moore at all. This is going to be a long season, as will the next 2-3 as Richt’s eventual replacement will have to recover a broken team.

I knew bobo in college, he was d-bag then, when cmr hired him I was shocked. No experience, avg qb in college, nothing like the man cmr is off the field. I was totallybshocked, so this last 3 yrs have been nothing of a surprise to me. It’s unfortunate bobo will take him down. Dan Mullen, come on over and enjoy your lake oconee home more often! Mcgarity make the darn call, it’s over folks time to move on. You saw what Bowden did in FSU by hanging around, they weren’t heard of for almost 10 yrs on the national stage, wonder where cmr learned how to coach. In the end it comes down to money and donors anyway, while the AD may be behind him in the open, it won’t matter when folks writing checks have finally had enough.
we are in yr three of that. Let’s cut bait now, or enjoy this same crap next few years

As a Georgia Alumn I can say that I was not personally embarassed by what I saw last night at the Dome. However, that is only because I was not playing or coaching. Those guys should be ashamed to show their faces today. I vote that we make them wear those hideous clown uniforms until they demonstrate that they deserve to wear the silver britches.

CMR kept CWM (former defensive coordinator too long); CMR kept CDVH (former S&C too long); this resulted in putting the program behind by 4 years; now with CMR keeping CMB (present OC too long) and hiring CWF (present OL Coach) the program is in a further stalemate; CMR’s demise has resulted in not making the right decisions!! “You Snooze, You Lose”!!! I have zero confidence in this staff now!!!

First of all! To all you Tech fans running that mouth at least Georgia started the season off with a worthy opponent! Second yes we did play like crap and I’m sure we will get better and better! Third lets not forget Boise State has 25 seniors some of which (18) have been playing together for 5 years! Also they play on blue astroturf and so had some advantage there as well! Yes we lost and frankly we deserved it! However, suck it up and lets get ready to finish this year out strong! Use this game as a wake up call and let’s finish the year out with a bang! Who knows we could end up playing them again somewhere down the road! Go Dawgs!!!!!

I have been a Richt supporter even through last year; but, The Boise game was my undoing. Weighing “50lbs” more per man across the line we couldn’t run the ball. We didn’t use our athletic advantage except on 3-plays…all TD”s I might add…defensively, we were pathetic…no pressure…none…few if any blitzes…We should have matched them one on one all over the field and sent the house everytime they went back to pass…we should have hit that midget QB in the mouth on every pass play…we took five sacks…Moore took none…we were bigger…stronger…faster…more athletic..and better at every position on the field; and yet, lost by 2 touchdowns and the game was not as close as the score would dictate…go ahread coach Richt…tell us how we know nothing about football…tell us how we think we know but don’t…go ahead tell us….well, I might not know anything about football…but, I recognize a tail kicking when I see one…South Carolina is put up or shut up time…come out at least competitive…or don’t bother to show up for practice the next week…and as I said, I have been one of the man’s most ardent supportters…but, enough is enough

Watched from Afghanistan.
Georgia has a lot of players (?) that should be extras in the remake movie “Blob”.
With our defense, the offense needs to score at least 50 points a game to be competitive. With our offense, the defense needs to hold the other team to 10 points maximum. WE HAVE A DISCONNECT!
I haven’t read the previous comments, but I did see where a “walk-on” LB (Sluder or something like that) made several unassisted tackles and Mark Richt commented on how good he’d done.
Think it’s time to recruit players that appreciate playing, an education, and are willing to contribute to something besides their on ego? BSU had a host of those guys who know they aren’t going to play pro football.
Let’s recruit COLLEGE players and not professional farm teamers.

I wanted to first state that I totally understand your frustrations with your coaching staff. I would also like to say that you will not take our Coach PETE away from us, I dont know if he will ever leave because money is not the driving force for him. You guys are very humbled from this game and I appreciate it. You have a good team, good athletes, and a so-so coaching staff. We controlled both lines of scrimmage which was very surprising, all they hype was your lines outweighing us by 50 lbs a peice. Boise State is not big, but they play very physical and they know their assignments, they do stray too far away from where they are supposed to be.
I hope that the rest of the DAWGS can show up to play like Boykin did, that guy is good, really good. Aaron Murray has a lot to learn, he cannot stay in the pocket as long as he did against us, especially in the SEC. I wish you guys the best of luck for the rest of the year and hope that your coaching staff either pulls their heads out of the deep end or look for a new place of employment. As a strong Boise State fan, I will now say GO DAWGS.

On the sidelines or the field Bobo needs to call it quits and go to another team, like a high school team. CMR has let his loyalty cost him his job. If that’s what he chooses then let it be. He fired the defensive coaches out of pressure and Bobo should have been with them. He will not get another chance to hire a new OC for next year. I like you Mark but you are history, good luck where ever you go.

Observations from the BSU game:
Same problems as last year…
- defensive line cannot shed blocks!!! It seems all they are coached to do is to hold ground w/the opposing o-line. We desperately need a disrupter on the line i.e. Richard Seymour, Charles Johnson.
- o-line cannot open holes. Crowell could be great if he only had a crease to run through. His pass protection needs a ton of work though.
- no creativity with the offensive scheme. If the opposing team shuts down the run, our offense becomes very easy to defend. Bobo should recognized this and add wrinkles to the game plan. Perhaps get Lemay in there for some run/pass option plays.
Lastly,
- extremely disappointed that our o-line & d-line, while larger in size, were manhandled by BSU. Everything begins up-front!!! If this does not change, uga is in for a very long year and, for the first time in my mind, I question Richt’s ability to hold his job. I think Richt is a great coach, but ever since he turned the offense to Bobo, things have gone downhill (exception when we had Stafford & Moreno – all pros). Just taking Florida as an example – if Richt thinks that Bobo is on the same intellectual level as Charlie Weis, he’s not thinking clearly. Also, no one has come close to the defensive genius Van Gorder brought to the other side of the ball. I think I would be stating the obvious in that if Richt left… the incoming new coach would NOT retain either of the coordinators, nor would either of them be picked up by other D-1 teams on a lateral move. That, my friends, speaks volumes…

CMR was certainly not thinking clearly when he bragged about the D scouts beating the starting O, but one person that did do well was DE Christian Robinson with numerous tackles. UGA will improve but so will other SEC teams. CMR supporters, shed no tears for him when he departs as a multi-millionaire many times over at the end of this season. Good pay for phoning it in for the past four years. Those of us who followed CWF for years felt that CMR sealed his fate when he allowed Bobo to bring in friend Friend from UAB.

Why I will NEVER contribute a dime to UGA is due to the incredibly shoddy financial management exhibited by the Athletic Association. Whenever we fire a coach, we pay them millions, thanks to stupid long-term contracts. They used to give “rolling” 7-year contracts, so whenever you fired a Ray Goof, you owed him for 6 more freaking years. Unbelievable.
To the person who said they hope this is a “wake-up call”, if you weren’t already woken up from a 6-7 season, you are incapable of being awakened. You are dead.
The first game of the season should not need to serve as a “wake-up call”.
Especially in the head coach’s 11th season.
Why is he not already awake?

I think everyone here misses the big picture. 18 5th year players. I don’t care how big or fast you are, smarts will win every time. “Big Time” college football teams need to learn from this game. By the time our blue chippers turn 23 they have been in the pros for two to three years. Boise St. keeps them playing. I’ll take a 5th year player over a true freshman any day, I don’t give a crap about what color his chip is.

This game was lost on Friday when Richt downplayed the importance of this game by saying our goal is to win the east and that starts next week.
This gave the players an excuse for not being motivated. Good job Coach.
What is the problem? How can we consistantly have illconceived game plans on offense? We need to find one thing we do well…and be the absolute best at whatever that is. Why partially install a complicated spread offense when we have 3rd year players last year that didn’t understand the existing complicated yet unsuccessful offense!? I wish we played offense like Alabama–smashmouth. Somebody would have to convince Richt to sign a few more O-lineman instead of signing 19 tight ends.
For seemingly the 5th year in a row our whole season hinges on one injury. Same Olineman oes down 2 years in a row and that was why we couldn’t compete. AJ is out 4 games and that is why we can’t compete. This year our stud ILB goes down and again…we have nobody ready to step in. Injuries occur on every team…but our team is the only one where a single injury derails the whole season. AND Richt admits it in interviews afterwards.
How can we so consistantly trot out a team that a good players but play totally uninspired.
I can’t stand the fire this guy now notion because we are not going to switch during the season. Do you people calling for Richt’s head today really want a coach that would quit on his current team? Bobby Petrino we don’t need.
We are here and this is what we’ve got–11 more games (a bowl game would be a miracle judging from Saturday’s performance). I am interested in seeing what happens. I think the line for the SC should be 30 points.

WnE – you are spot on with your analysis. As for everyone else. I had an interesting lunch about a year ago with an assistant Coach at South Carolina. When asked, “what do you think is wrong at UGA?” I expected to hear its the assistants or the recruits. Instead, he said simply, “its the head coach”. The difference between our bloviation and his is that he is he inside of the SEC coaching profession and knows the difference. This is no different then when outside experts talk about our own respective fields of business. Point being, CMR’s first and only good hire was BVG. He left in 2004 and so went our team. If you want the real deal, CMR has to go. The heir apparent may not be BVG, but at least it wont be the facade you saw on Saturday or have been seeing for the last 7 years.

I don’t think it’s Bobo. While he may call the plays, Richt is the boss and could say “no” we’re not going to do this. By not doing so, he gives his tamp of approval to Bobo’s scheme if there is a scheme.
Bobo’s a poor OC because he doesn’t understand football. If you can run over them, use the pass to keep them honest and vice versa. Don’t start all this other stuff when you got stuff working for you. Go with it ’til you can’t go anymore and then do something else. And have a plan to do so.
Frankly this game looked like it was played on January 6, 2011 because they looked the same to me last night as they did on December 31,2010 against that football goliath, UCF, against whom we scored two field goals! Our coaching staff, beginnng with Richt, is way over its head. And if we fire Bobo or demote him, who in their right mind would want the job unless it had the cash attached to it a la Grantham. Someone remarked that Grantham lacked fire. Come to think of it, I never saw him once on the TV.

Given that we had 8 months to prepare for Boise’s (that a small town in Idaho) offense, that we pay our D coordinator $750,000 a year, and that Boise (that’s a small town in Idaho) scored 35 points against a defense whose players are bigger, faster and quicker than Boise’s (that’s a small town in Idaho) offensive players should be enough to tell us that we have serious coaching problems. Notice I did not say our players were stronger or in better shape than Boise’s ( by now you may be aware that is a small town in Idaho) because the Broncos were clearly more physical and never seemed to get tired. In summary, it was pretty pitiful and CTG is overpaid and over matched. However, he is getting paid a bunch of money, and that’s pretty amazing.
