After Georgia’s 35-21 loss to Boise State was in the books and the Bulldogs had slogged their way back to their locker room in the depths of the Georgia Dome, senior cornerback Brandon Boykin stood up in the center of the room and yelled for his teammates’ attention.
“Before Coach Richt talked, I just told them we have a whole season left to play,” said Boykin, one of four captains for the game. “I told them, ‘this was a hyped game and everybody wanted us to do what we’re supposed to do, but it didn’t happen. We can’t get our heads down because we’ve got a whole season to go.’ Everybody’s positive now and we’re going to be ready for this next ballgame.
Boykin certainly did all he could. The cornerback from Fayetteville, in addition to playing the whole game on defense and finished with six tackles, a pass breakup and a tackle for loss, also ended up with 190 all purpose yards.
Eighty yards came on the first and only offensive play of Boykin’s career, a touchdown on a counter play after lining up in the backfield.
“That’s something we worked on,” Boykin said. “I was just fortunate for it to open up like it did with the blocking and everything. But the bottom line is it means nothing because we didn’t win the game. But if coach Richt or Coach Bobo wants me to play offense any time I’m all for it.”
Samuel gets starting nod over Crowell
Junior Richard Samuel said he was surprised to get the start at tailback over freshman Isaiah Crowell at tailback.
“I was surprised because I felt like he got more reps than me the last two weeks,” said Samuel, who was sidelined a quadriceps injury toward the end of preseason camp. “We run an equal rotation at the position but, yeah, I was a little bit surprised.”
Samuel, who played his first two seasons on offense, was moved from linebacker late this summer after attrition robbed Georgia of its top two rushers from last season, Washaun Ealey and Caleb King. Samuel opened the game with a two-yard run. He finished with 12 yards on seven carries.
Crowell had impressed his coaches and teammates while getting the majority of work with the No. 1 offense during the preseason. He came in the game on Georgia’s second possession and lost a yard on his first carry.
“Aaron [Murray] tripped me a little bit,” he said with a slight chuckle.
But overall Crowell fared a little better, finishing with 60 yards on 15 carries. So he could get the nod against South Carolina.
“It was tough to find holes,” he said. “Boise did a good job running to the ball.”
Injuries take toll
Starting inside linebacker Alec Ogletree left early in the first quarter with an injury to his right foot. Early indications are Ogletree is doubtful for next week. The majority of Ogletree’s snaps were filled by walk-on Jeremy Sulek and junior Michael Gilliard.
Also late in the first half, Boykin and the other starting inside linebacker, Christian Robinson, went down with injuries. Both players returned in the second half. Robinson said he got a “couple of hip-pointers.”
“Between Christian Robinson and Ogletree, we couldn’t really afford to lose one of those two guys,” Richt said. “The drop off was going to be pretty steep, with true freshmen and a walk-on in there. They’re good kids and they’re busting their tails, but it was a position we felt we really couldn’t afford that type of an injury.”
Richt did not know the extent of Ogletree’s injury. His right foot was in a walking boot after the game.
Starting left guard Kenarious Gates left the game with a “lower left leg” injury in the second quarter. That was also an area the Bulldogs could ill-afford an injury. Gates was expected to be Georgia’s fill-in if a tackle went out with an injury. Sophomore Dallas Lee, who previously hasn’t played in a game, replaced Gates.
“Gates leaving was not good for Georgia and not good for Gates,” Richt said. “But Dallas [Lee] was a guy we felt comfortable could go in there and play guard. I’ll have to watch the film to see how he did.”
First-timers
Seven true freshmen made their debut for Georgia in the first half: wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell — who started — cornerback Nick Marshall, safety Corey Moore, cornerback Damian Swann, cornerback Chris Sanders, inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera and Crowell.
Several other players played in their first games. Junior college transfer nose guard John Jenkins, redshirt freshman defensive backs Mark Deas and Connor Norman, linebacker Kosta Vavlas, wide receiver Michael Bennett and wide receiver Michael Erdman. Also sophomore linebacker Jarvis Jones started following a redshirt season in 2010 after transferring from USC.
The Bulldogs had five first-time starters. On offense, WR Marlon Brown, OG Chris Burnette and Mitchell lined up during the first play of the game. Mitchell was not in the game on the first snap, but the original first down play was called back after a false start penalty. CB Jordan Love lined up for Georgia its first down on defense.
Rambo, Thomas don’t play
Free safety Bacarri Rambo and tailback Carlton Thomas both were held out due to suspensions for unspecified violations of team rules. Both will be back for South Carolina.
Richt had confirmed Thomas’ suspension but didn’t say anything about Rambo until after Saturday’s game.
“He is eligible to play next week,” Richt said. “He was suspended for the first game for the usual team rules violation. Carlton Thomas will play next week, too.”
Rambo started all 13 games at free safety last season. Thomas was Georgia’s leading returning rusher, but was not expected to start this season
Bobo back in press box
Mike Bobo was calling plays from the pressbox again on Saturday. It was part of a ploy by Georgia to play a hurry-up offense and make call from above.
The Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator had been calling plays from the sidelines since October of 2009, when he moved down to the field midway through the season “to get a better feel of things” and talk face-to-face with quarterback Joe Cox after a few poor offensive efforts in a row.
Now in his fourth season as Georgia’s offensive coordinator and 11th as quarterbacks , Bobo started out coaching from the press box in 2007 and 2008.
Rocking in the ATL
Georgia-Boise State wasn’t the only game in town this weekend. In fact, there were all kinds of events taking place in Atlanta, including a Braves game, Dragon*Con, the Black Gay Pride Parade and NASCAR racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Also, the Sports Radio 680 The Fan was organized a concert in Centenniel Olympic Park for the rock band O.A.R. Needless to say, downtown Atlanta was jam-packed and jamming on Saturday.
All of which made Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan very happy. He hadn’t taken an official census, but he was pretty certain all the major downtown hotels were booked Friday and Saturday night.
“There are 12,000 rooms downtown and I can’t imagine there’s one of them that has availability,” Stokan said on the Georgia Dome field before the game. “Imagine what it’s going to be like next year when we have two games.”
Next year the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game will hold a doubleheader on this weekend, with games between Auburn-Clemson and Tennessee-N.C. State. And yes, Dragon*Con.
What the Big Dawg ate
Georgia’s new head nutritionist Jenn Ketterly traveled with the team and planned all the Bulldogs’ meals in advance of and after Saturday’s game, down to what kind of oil in which to cook the food.
UGA stayed at the Omni Hotel downtown and Ketterly dictated every meal the Bulldogs ate while there. She said Saturday’s pregame meal was chicken, steak, green beans, roasted potatoes, macaroni and cheese and a full fruit bar.
Scene and heard
Tight end Orson Charles was rocking a newly-acquired mohawk haircut. Perhaps in honor of UGA’s “spread the red” promotion for the game, it was dyed red. . . . UGA legend Herschel Walker and former Boise State star defensive end Ryan Winterswyk delivered the official game ball in pregame ceremony. They were actually driven to midfield in a car. . . . Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal announced that it was time for the kickoff. . . . Georgia won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. . . . Former Bulldogs fullback Shaun Chapas (Dallas Cowboys) and tailback Caleb King (Minnesota Vikings) were cut by their respective teams on Saturday. . . . Before Saturday, Georgia was 7-8 in domes, including 4-3 at the Georgia Dome. Two of those wins clinched SEC championships.

oh yeah, the reason samuel fell to 3rd behind ealey/king and moved to LB is because he is not a tailback. Guess what? He is still not!

I thought Crowell looked pretty good with the space he had to run, looked alot quicker and more explosive than anything we’ve had lateley, he’ll be a good one. I thought the players played their butts off, even though they were getting beat by their man alot of the time, give the other team some credit, they’re trying to when too and they are good. Our head coach looks like a zombie who’s ready to take a nap, and Bobo is definitely from the Jim Donnan school of play calling(no rhyme or reason) and our version of the spread lookes like a pop-warner team. The D should have been blitzing and playing man alot more. But, overall Boise State is a good team that we should give a little more credit for the loss. I doubt we’ll see another team that plays that smart and is that discipline.

Extremely poor o-line & d-line play. The streets & small colleges are full of 6′4″ 340 pounders & they are not SEC level o-linemen either. And, what good is 360 lb nose tackle who is winded jogging from the sideline to the “D” huddle?

UGA gets highly rated HS stars because the word is out than when you go to UGA, its just a big fun party where you really don’t have to work hard because losing is accepted and the fans still fill the seats. Why go somewhere where you have to work to win? Same with the coaches, high pay no pressure to win. What a nice place to be.

I think some great coaching names have been thrown around in the blog, but more and more I think its Kirby. We just gotta keep the best kids in GA HS here at UGA, and Kirby has proven he can recruit GA. Next, we need a coach who’s got more than a pay check interest in UGA…time to try an alum again, and why not?…UGA probably has as many or more top alum coaches out there as any other school. Obvously Peterson is one the top 5 coaches in CFB, but he’s already turned down tons of top jobs, he aint leavin. We missed out on Muschamp, and that may come back to haunt us.
Dan Mullen I think would be a mistake (although still better than Richt) – with all the talent in GA HS, why the heck would we run a gimmick offense?

Prior to this game, I thought that Georgia would beat out Boise due to their bigger, physical lineman on both sides of the ball, but overall, it comes down to execution. Coach RIcht and Bobo need to unleash the this teams inner beast. Coaching will usually triumph over overall skill and size. Hopefully those coaches are taking notes, but overall, I (still) think that Georgia is in the drivers seat to win the SEC East, take it one week at a time, beat USC next week and let this loss be motivation for the team for the rest of the season.

What happened to using Stripling on defense and RB Ken Malcome on offense. I think the running game needs to be by committee becasue no one really shined. Offense line played poor they remined me of Marist against Tucker bigger than everybody but no punch. They couldn’t make any holes to run or protect the QB poor showing. Need to bounce back next week and put it on South Carolina. Defense needs to learn how to tackle and put their head in the mix and stop reaching and arm pull downs(tackle..??)

Did anyone pay attenton to what the announcers said about Boise State? Most of the starters are 5th year seniors and UGA is a very young team. They have very little experience but with their talent they will only get better. The main problem with UGA is still the O line. Thier running game was non existant. And look at the running backs. Ga. Tech has better running backs than UGA. If the running game doesn’t improve UGA is in for a long season. Solution: UGA better start running a form of the spread offense where the passing game sets up the run. Also Boykin would be my running back. He has the big play ability the running game desperately needs. And as for the passing game Tavares King needs to ride the pine. He looks as bad as Stepthen Hill looked last year for the Jackets.

I was so ready to believe. The first team all SEC quarterback, a new strength and conditioning program everyone seemed to believe in, an all-world running back, Marlon Brown ready to break out, the dream team, a second year in coach Grantham’s system. What do we get instead? five pre-snap penalties, six sacks, the same lousy tackling, dropped passes and Richt standing stone faced on the sidelines showing no fire or emotion. I’m done getting suckered by pre season hope and hype. Fire Richt.

Im watching LSU right now LSU toss sweep to side, power eye to the side, then they change it up and go up the middle. Boozoo might ought to take notes.
They also should take notes from Boise. When Boise wasnt connecting with the deep ball they went to crossing patterns over the middle did we
Nope sideline pass, run up the middle, throw the deep ball. I know some rec ball coaches who could stop us

Your right, where was Malcome? I thought Crowell looked pretty good and Samuel would probably look good too if there were holes. I would have like to have seen Malcome, maybe he’s still injured. I was just surprised that we didn’t line up in the I most of the time, that’s where I wanted to see Crowell. Finally, in the second half when we went to the I and started running play-action, we went down the field in a few plays and then Bobo goes back to the spread and killed the drive…so typical of his play calling. I think back to last year against Auburn when they couldn’t stop us in the first half running our normal sets, and then he starts a drive with the wildcat on 1st and 2nd down and kills that drive and our momentum…so typical.

“Are You for Real” — you nailed it. No EXECUTION by the o-line, and it doesn’t matter what plays you call. If we ran toss sweeps, they would fail, and people would clamor for more power runs up the gut. If those failed, they would clamor for more screens. If those failed, they would ask why we aren’t stretching the field with long passes. Those were especially hilarious since the DB was consistently behind our slow receivers. We should have underthrown those balls to the back shoulder. But Murray did not read the coverage or anticipate how slow our receivers were, or how much cushion they were getting.
Anyway, Bobo is not the problem. All plays look bad when the don’t work.
And all plays don’t work when you lack EXECUTION.

The hand writing was on the wall after GA’S first offensive series. Three penalties and down hill from there on. Not until the game was essentially over did Bobo change up but still had little affect since the D was gassed and could not stop KM and the BSU offense. the D held their own up until the end of the half, then again, it was downhill from there on.
GA cannot run up the middle. Its been that way for several years yet the oline seems to be talented enuf to play at the next level (NFL). Its time to completely scrap the current offensive scheme and sorry to say the 3-4 isn’t working for UGA. The players looked lost out there on D. They cannot defend the short passing game. That will play into SC’s hand next week.
Lastly, its time for complete change in coaching staff. Mark Richt has become the Coach hawkins of UGA football. CMR cannot right this sinking ship. No matter what smoke screens come out of Athens when the smoke does clear nothing has changed and in fact its getting worse. Mighty Casey has struck out (again).

Richt can’t carry Dan Hawkins’ jock strap. Which is why UGA lost to freaking Colorado last year. That WAS due to predictable play calling. Running up the gut to set up FG, so obvious, and COLO calls run blitz and forces fumble. Go for the dang TD, not the FG. A little play-action short pass there wins the game. Pitiful.

Anybody that thinks play calling is not a huge part of the problem doesn’t know jack about football. Yes the o-line was getting beat alot by good d-lineman, but that means that you adjust your play calling to maximize your potential, not run up the middle out of the spread. That’s why the play-action out of the I was working the FEW plays that we used it. But, we should have established the run and play-action out I alot sooner. IMO Bobo is not capable of calling plays at this level, the DC’s are way ahead of him and since the head coach can’t see that, then he has to be held accountable.
I was watching the game on TV so I’m not sure, but I hope that it wasn’t UGA fans being so loud on our first two possessions, it seemed to me that it was causing the false starts, but I doubt the Boise state fans could’ve been making that much noise..I hope i’m wrong.

Now I see why UGA had such a hard time finding a defensive coordinator. No one wants to be responsible for a defense that ends up on the field 40+ minutes every time they play a top team. 3 & out is a recipe for poor defense in the final minutes of a game. If this offense only put up 21 on Boise, it’s not likely they will fare very well against SEC defenses. UGA fans, pray for a 5-win season so we avoid a more embarrassing bowl loss than last year.
How long do we endure???
September 4th, 2011

UGA has been rebuilding since the year that we did go to the Sugar Bowl and play hapless Hawaii. THAT was eons ago.
Why do we have to endure year after year with CMR?? It is time NOW to pull the plug on his era. That Oklahoma State U game told me all that I needed to know about CMR and his staff. We are horrible and it is a lack of proper coaching. Period.
Book it. SC will put up 34 on UGA and we will look exactly like we did last night. CLUELESS. UGA has no brand identity, as we are neither fish nor fowl. Are we a rushing team or are we a passing team? Answer: Neither.
Our O line id woefully inadequate and that LIne Coach Coach Friend is also a failure. HC needs to sign every year in the SEC, 6, 7 or 9 BIG BOY O linemen and CMR has gone after all world kids only to be snuffed and we end our luckily with Kenarious Gates from east Ga and now he is hurt. He was a last minute recruit two years ago and now even he is injured. We have maybe three frosh back ups. Not good and this will NEVER win in the SEC. Last night proved that.
UGA is in deep trouble.

Gotta lay this one at the foot of the coaches…just like last year, Georgia is not mentally in the game…3 penalties in the first drive? Accepting the ball after winning the toss, knowing your defense is probably better than your offense? Bobo is so predictable on offense it’s stupid..penalty on first play, was going to be a pass..2nd & 15 and we run? Come on Mike, help us out here. There are a lot of holes in this team and as much as I love Coach Richt as a person, he’s gotten outcoached time and time again. That being said, Boise is a very good team, they’ve beaten some top programs and we only lost by 2 TD’s..eliminate some of the mental mistakes and this could gone either way…but coaches are responsible to make sure there are no mental mistakes
