ATHENS — Isaiah Crowell is learning lessons right and left these days, sometimes the hard way.

Crowell
Take Tuesday, for instance.
Tuesdays of game weeks are always extremely busy. Georgia holds its weekly press conference, which brings dozens of media members into town, all needing content in advance of that week’s game. The Bulldogs, of course, open the season Saturday against Boise State. Crowell, a freshman phenom who will play a significant role in the game, is the subject of much interest. So everybody wants to talk to him.
Crowell was instructed to be available for interviews after practice on Tuesday. But instead of showing up for 10 minutes as instructed, Crowell blew them off.
This did not sit well with Georgia.
So UGA sports communication personnel tracked down Crowell, reportedly at an academic tutorial appointment, and brought him back to Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall afterward. It was after 10 p.m. when he finally showed up. He was greeted by seven reporters who had waited around to hear from him (another four or five bailed out). I was among the reporters who stayed.
To Crowell’s credit, he was polite and accommodating when he finally arrived. He was also contrite when asked about making the adjustment to big-time college football, which comes with all kinds responsibilities and demands beyond gaining yardage and holding onto the football.
“It has been overwhelming,” said Crowell, who attended classes all morning Tuesday, had meetings and practices in the afternoon, then tutoring in the evening. “In high school, if you didn’t do something, there wasn’t too much going to be said about it. If you didn’t go to treatment, nobody cared. Sometimes I didn’t even go to class. Nobody really said anything about it. But here, any time you’re one minute late, somebody will know about it. Time management has been the toughest thing for me.”
Crowell is still working on that. Saturday we’ll find out how that football part is going. By all accounts, it’s going well.
“He’s every bit as good as advertised,” quarterback Aaron Murray said Tuesday. “The kid has turned people’s heads every day in practice. He’s a tremendously talented running back. He’ll show everyone this year. He’s going to make some plays that people’s jaws are going to hit the ground like, ‘Wow, that kid just made that move.’ ”
Said offensive coordinator Mike Bobo: “I’ve been really happy with him. I think he’s going to be a great player here. Is it going to happen game one? I don’t know, but I think he’s going to be a great player. Just let the guy play football and let’s see how he develops.”

I always like the way John Thompson handled freshmen and the press. He wouldn’t let the freshmen talk to reporters until half way through the season (January). I would like to see this at all colleges for all sports. Let’s face it, eighteen year olds are still children and they sound silly most of the time.

Real smart (pardon the pun) to take him out of tutorial to go meet with the press @ 10:00 p.m.. I’d be more worried about IC being like Caleb King academically than I would him not meeting with the same guys he has seen all Summer and probably answered the same questions hundreds of times.
If he is having time management issues then err on the side of academics.

He is trying to get tutoring after an extremely long day! He shows incredible intiative, and discipline to go through with that. And then he gets pulled out of it for an interview? I guess the term student-athlete isn’t relevant anymore. He’s a freshman in college, he’s under the biggest spotlight of any teenager in the south, use some more common courtesy and respect next time, please, news media.

Finer, I’m sure you never missed a single lecture or lab for one of your hog calling or fish gutting classes at SC but for most kids, acclimating to college is a maturation process. Cut him some slack.

I would not let him talk to the media either. If he needs to study and go to class and he is having a time management problem the least important of those is the media. Let him drop that rather than tutoring. If he does not make the grades he will be talking to the media for the reasons Caleb King did. We do not want that!

GeoffDawg hits the nail on the head. I’m not sure the average fan has any idea how much is required of college athletes. They’re subjected to extremely long days, especially during the season. And I’m especially sympathetic to somebody like Crowell, who in addition to classes, physical training and practice, also has been in a month-long cram session to learn the Bulldogs’ playbook. It’s a lot to absorb, much less for an 18-year-old on whom much expectation has been placed.

In addition, not to stereotype or anything, but a lot of these players come from difficult backgrounds and family situations where there’s little to no structure and no consequences for their actions. I can’t imagine the culture shock these kids go through and have a ton of respect for those that do it and come out of college as productive citizens. I can’t say that I would’ve been able to do it.

The High School coaches and teachers sometimes do a great job of keeping this kids in check. Sometimes, they do not. I get the feeling Isiah wasn’t always kept in check. My wife is a HS teacher and the head football coach there apparently is an awesome teacher and really cares about their education. He has instructed her to email him as soon as any of his players get the least bit out of line or do poorly in class. She emailed him that a kid was 5 minutes late the other day and this kid is now the first one in class every day and basically a perfect angel. She says every football player has the same sort of reform after a simple email. We need more teachers/coaches like him. These are the people who shape our youth and the future of our country and we can’t have enough great ones.

He is, first and foremost, a student so these responsibilities precede meeting with a business entity like a newspaper reporter who is paid by the business that makes its money through subscriptions and the advertisement therein. Now, if the AJC and any other news organizations are paying the Georgia Athletic Department for this time, fine. Otherwise, there is no entitlement whatsoever.
It cracks me up how the media feels entitled to access as if its a right, not a privilege as a for profit business, not a law enforcement agency.
However, if he had previously agreed to be there on time he should have been–no excuses. Even an 18 year old should know a commitment is a commitment!

Why is uga letting the tail wag the dog?
Why not put in place a rule that T-Freshmen aren’t available to the Media until some point where they can adjust to playing in the SEC maybe 6-7 Games into the Schedule, Oct. 15 for example.
Problem solved.
T-freshmen don’t owe the media anything, and uga should give them a chance to adjust before they create even more obligations for young players.

I am an SEC fan who also works in the SEC in various sports. I am not a UGA fan, but as part of the SEC I want to see all these kids do well in the classroom first and on the field second. These young men and women are on their own for the first time in their lives and time management is the leading indicator whether a kid is going to make it through school and finish with a degree. The same thing applies for our daily lives and how successful we are.
Mr. Crowell was an outstanding High School player and many many UGA fans are hoping he brings that same type of play to the Georgia. He is in good hands with the folks at UGA and they understand the importance of graduating their players.
If we spent more time insuring our players earned their degrees and learned valuable life lesson than how many touchdowns they scored on saturdays the schools themselves would be better off and the players would be better off as well.
Good luck and if the young man does not have that great game that many fans expect from him, please remember that the amount of pressure placed on these young people is a heavy heavy load.
He will make UGA proud if he is given the opportunity on the field and the classroom.

Skipping classes doesn’t mean Jack. I skipped plenty of BS classes in High School and the only thing that it affected were the teachers perceptions of me. Not SAT scores or my overall GPA. The fact that he is going to tutorials in college and working on his time management now is what matters. You can get away with that BS in pretty much every HS in the country if you have the academic accumen to back yourself up. College will be different, as evidenced by his CURRENT approach (and the fact that there are more people to hold him accountable). Who cares that he skipped Keyboard Typing and German II as long as he is dedicating himself to his studies where it counts? I’d say most of the haters are hypocrites. Those first few weeks of their freshman year, many are overwhelmed with normal student responsibilities. These kids have an awful lot to deal with and Crowell has more than most. Its a learning curve, and I haven’t heard anything to be upset with. He will make mistakes, and the coaches will help him when he does.
I also remember my senior year of high school. I didnt attend class much either and as long as I was still getting A’s no one seemed to care.

Pshhh… I’m so tired of hearing this ” Time management” garbage. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TIME MANAGEMENT. It doesn’t exist! And even if it did, “managing time” defeats the purpose. Its not important to “manage time” its important to prioritize it. What you place priority on is what will come to fruition. If you goof off, screw around downtown after games, slack off in workouts, and don’t watch enough game film: then football isn’t a priority to you. If you put in the work in the classroom, gym, practice field, all the while mixing in a little fun after a WIN: then being a good UGA football player is a priority. If you only care about going to college to get your draft status up, then your priority is to make yourself look good at the expense of others. If your priority is to win championships, then your priority is to work within the context of the team to insure that team success happens..
The last few years, the priority for most of these players has been to worry about their draft status and then goof off downtown. There has been little or no buy in to being a Bulldog. For them to get back into championship form, Richt needs players who place the priority on doing things the right way on and off the field, like he had early on in his career. And its up to him AS THE HEAD COACH, to set that expectation. Things have been too “Loosey Goosey” the last few years. Time to get it done.

UGAmutt, what makes you think this is an academic/wolf cry? So he’s getting tutoring. Like I said most student athletes do. I like the fact that he is getting it to stay on top of his grades and he took that more seriously than talking to reporters. The problem is that the reporters got their panties in a wad from having to wait so they try to make something negative out of it.

Seeing as how I never attended the University, am I allowed to be a fan, wear hats and shirts with a G on them? Or should I just hide all of that stuff and pretend that I don’t really love the dogs? Let me know what I should do with all this stuff.
Maybe there should be a blog that can only be accessed by actual UGA alumni by way of student ID or ss#..?

Earlier, there was a good post about a HS football coach who was also a good teacher and took personal interest in his player’s classroom responsibilities. IMO that maybe be the exception, and more often they compete for the student’s time and interest. I base my opinion on two experiences. First, in the early 1960s, if you were in the Business School at UGA, then you took a class, under Dr. Alto Charles, called Business Law. Dr. Charles like Dean Tate was a legend. One of the many stories about Dr. Charles involved a football coach who requested that Dr. Charles consider changing his course grade to benefit a football player. Dr. Charles agreed to change the player’s grade and gave the player a “F”. The other experience involved my son who attended a small Christian School and played football for another legend, Bill Thorn. The teachers were jealous of Thorn’s success and the demands he placed on his football team. The teachers forced Thorn to resign.

This is why we should go ahead and pay players and put everything above board.
He was pulled away from an ACADEMIC TUTORIAL session to do a freaking INTERVIEW?!?!
THIS is what’s wrong with college athletics today. College football is a BUSINESS, and a big one at that. Everyone gets paid except the athletes- and please spare me the “they get a free education” line, it’s old and tired. Maybe back in the 50s, 60s, 70s and even into the 80s you could make that case, but not today. The schools make millions, the merchandise distributors/manufactuers make millions, the “Logo” companies make millions off these kids pimpin their gear, and surprise, surprise, the NCAA gets a cut from everyone. Not the players though.
The NCAA gives Marvin Austin(UNC) and the others a 2 game suspension last season for taking a free plane ticket to Miami, thousands of dollars in bar tabs, hotel expenses and meals, and who knows what else.
Meanwhile AJ Green sells ONE jersey litterally off his back for $1200 and gets hit with 4 games.
Terrell Pryor and company simply TRADED signed merchandise for tattoos and bar tabs and they got hit with 5 games each.
What’s the difference? One group took money from an agent/booster
The other group made money off MERCHANDISE and the NCAA is NOT going to stand for that and not get a cut.
The NCAA is just as crooked and guilty for this mess as the street agents rouge boosters are, but because they make the rules they can do whatever they want.

If this young man does well on Saturday, how many people on these blogs, much less the journalist are going to be worried that he blew off a small press conference. Doesn’t a young freshman have enough to worry about already, without having to spend time answering the same questions over and over again. The UGA press dept. or whatever they call themselves, should not make freshmen availabloe for these little journalistic get togethers anyway.

When you only have one voice for the Program ie., Saban you dont have to worry about who is saying what when and where to the media. It eleminates idiotic comments such as the Boykin tweet. And oh boo Fing hoo on having to go to class and then practice. It doesnt seem to bother the student atheletes who contribute both on the field and in the class room and graduate in 3 years. Maybe the time management program CMR employs is why the practices are so soft. I noticed his comment that Crowell has had a great camp but he really has not been hit yet. So much for either the improved defense or new conditioning program.

Crowell is going to be awesome and Boise St. is not going to know what hit them if we get him past the line of scrimmage. Think Moreno-like but better. Boise is going to be chasing him all day. I dont care how good their defense “is”. Their defense never is good against a good team is it? So it really isnt that good. For them it is good, but that is really below average compared to an SEC defense.

Is this an article addressing an issue that shows evidence that he is having academic issues? No. Is this an article addressing an issue that shows IC is having “off-field” issues? No. Then why was this article written? To stir controversy and to make the cages rattle. If he was Brandon Harton, this would be a NON-ISSUE. I.E.-this article is a boy crying wolf over a situation that no one should even waste time batting an eyelash over. So the media didn’t get 3 hrs to ask this kid the same questions they asked Boykin, Tyson, Murray and Richt. More pandering to the masses and BS spin. I’m sick of it. This is why Nick Saban has the rule that true freshmen are off limits to journalists. No interviews. I realize the sports writers want the hot story, but this is exactly the situation that he tries to avoid. A true freshman is adjusting to college and the college football game. Interviews with the press are the last thing he needs.
Both Mark Ingram and Julio Jones said that they appreciated that rule even though the sports writers dog Coach Saban about it because it denies access to the current “hot commodity.”

I’m with bamaguy on this one. As much as I appreciate the bi-hourly updates on all things UGA, I believe that a lot of these topics accomplish no more than premature fanbase hysteria over a kid that hasn’t touched a ball in a live CFB game yet. As it stands, he could score a touchdown on the first play of the game. He could fumble on the first play of the game. OR…just maybe…he doesn’t touch the ball until the Coaches feel like they have a handle on the MO and the pace that they want to dictate. WHO KNOWS!?! All you can do is wish him luck, hope he has a good head on his shoulders and an iron grip on that rock.

@dumba$$ alert–thx for warning us about your post! It certainly was a dumb post! So, a kid cuts out an interview to make tutoring, and then has the energy and discipline to come back over later (upon being reminded of his responsibility) to talk. Note that Chip and others who talked to him said he was very respectful and pleasant. I wonder how many kids would be respectful and cheerful after going at it for 16 hours of school, football, and tutoring? How about you? So, you are absolutely right about the alert on your dumba$$ moniker: this story proves exactly the opposite of your thesis–he has a great attitude. The fact that he was pleasant and respectful at the end of a 16 hour day says a lot. Have you ever rearranged your schedule in the middle of a 16 hour day–like during Law school exams? You seem like a cop, not a lawyer. That said, who cares if he skipped a few classes in HS. Its extremely common everywhere, although no one cares if it’s say…a cop who used to skip classes. Would you like that kind of scrutiny? Secondly, he can blow the media off all day. He doesn’t owe them a thing. If anything, they owe Richt for keeping an open policy with his frosh player. Finally, I am proud of our future/current athletes. If you’re a DGD, then you would be too. No arrests. All of the attrition this summer was due to either hitting hard on the field or in the weight room, and the bad apples fell of that wagon. Give these kids the credit they deserve. Wow, this article sends up so many red flags. I don’t what is more distressing, Crowell’s attitude or the University’s. Does no one else see a problem with yanking the kid out of a tutorial to speak to the media? And the kid’s attitude stinks, he admits that he was coddled in high school (nice job, Carver H.S) and since he obviously knows he’s the whole show here, you can imagine he’s expecting and getting more of the same. I’m worried this is going to end badly. Someone better tell this kid he isn’t Herschel yet. He’s one bad injury from being a normal Joe like the rest of us and it seems that he thinks his poop doesn’t stink. The young man ought to take his opportunities more seriously and those around him ought to see to it that a little better guidance and a little more wisdom find their way to the youngster’s ear.
