There is a very good chance recent Carver-Columbus grad Isaiah Crowell could end up starting on Saturday. (UGA photo by Steve Colquitt)
ATHENS – Georgia’s game against Boise State on Saturday will command attention from a lot of places, but none more than Columbus.
Five players from the southwest Georgia bordertown will represent the Bulldogs during Saturday’s game, four of them with Carver High connections. Three of those guys – tailback Isaiah Crowell, outside linebacker Jarvis Jones and tight end Bruce Figgins – could end up starting in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Saturday the Georgia Dome.
Freshman defensive back Quintavious Harrow and walkon quarterback Greg Bingham are also from Columbus.
Needless to say, the Bulldogs are a hot topic this week at Carver.
“The whole school’s excited, not just that they’re playing well but because they’re that doing well,” Carver High principal Christopher Lindsey said. “Especially considering the difficult backgrounds some of them they came from. Jarvis, if you look at his background, his path to success is truly amazing. The way he acts, the way he carries himself, you would never know what he has had to overcome. We’ve really enjoyed watching them come into their own at Georgia.”
Figgins and Jones are definite starters as of Tuesday. Figgins, a fifth-year senior, heads into the game as the No. 1 fullback after playing his first four seasons at tight end. He’s a Shaw graduate but his father, Bruce Figgins Sr., works at Carver as a math teacher. Jones, a sophomore transfer from Southern Cal, will start at “Sam, or strongside outside linebacker, where he has shined in preseason camp.
Crowell, a freshman and the No. 1-rated high school running back prospect in America last year, is currently listed as the No. 2 tailback. But head coach Mark Richt admitted Tuesday that Crowell could end up getting the nod since No. 1 tailback Richard Samuel has been sidelined with a quadriceps injury most of the last two weeks.
“He could,” Richt said of Crowell possibly starting. “The longer Richard doesn’t go. . . it may be that Isaiah gets the nod. Either him or Richard would. It’ll just depend on what Richard can do here in the next couple of days. I think if Richard doesn’t practice in the next day or two, it might be that Isaiah gets the chance to be the starter. So it could be that we have three kids starting from Columbus.”
Samuel practiced full speed and in a regular red jersey on Wednesday.
People from Columbus aren’t surprised that Crowell has made the decision tough on coaches.
“Everybody here knows what an outstanding player Isaiah is,” Lindsey said. “He’s a great athlete but it’s his competitive edge that makes him special. He expects to be great. I have no doubt he’ll do well.”
Re-establishing as a recruiting stronghold has been a priority for Georgia, which had seen a lot of good players from the area go elsewhere in recent years. The city is just a half-hour from Auburn and has sent a lot of players all over.
“There are a lot of talented players that have come from there and a lot more talented players that are going to come from there,” said running backs coach Bryan McClendon, who recruits Columbus for the Bulldogs. “Hopefully players from there will see that you can come to Georgia and succeed both on the field and off of it.”
Crowell, Figgins and Jones and helping spread that message.
“UGA history in regards to outstanding players coming out of Columbus is not all that great,” Lindsey said. “I think these guys are going to break that mold. I sincerely believe that just having dealt with both those young men. I’ve never seen them in any trouble.”
Well, Crowell did have one shortcoming.
“The only time I ever had to deal with Isaiah was being late to school,” Lindsey said with a laugh. “As long as he stays levelheaded, though, he’ll be fine.”

Oh my gosh, trolls can’t wait for a new report to pop up so they can comment on it. Your just making yourself look stupid. Half the time they’re not even a fan of the school they put on their username. They could be Georgia Tech fan for all we know. As a matter of fact, half of the trolls on here are GT fans. Do you think SC fans, Florida fans, Alabama, Auburn, etc fans would take time out of their day to constantly check up on the Dawgs. No; it’s Georgia Tech people. Get real. They’re on the same website as us so they constantly come over to the Dawgs board and see if we have any new material then they hop on it and comment and troll away while hiding behind a team’s name that they feel is “superior” to UGA since they know their school isn’t. Ha. I have it figured out.

You Dawg fans who keep trashing Georgia Tech enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a drunken party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is worthless.

What does any of what you say have to do with a SPORTS blog. Nobody is disputing you that Georgia Tech is a great , very hard, prestigious college. It’s like the Ivy League school of the south but the Ivy League schools don’t even give scholarships so all of their concentration is on academics.
Please realize that there are people that really like competitive sports. It’s obvious you are not one of them. I suggest that you go to a more supportive blog.

The haters and trolls just can’t stand the fact that UGA has turned things around. No arrests, no bone headed decisions by players, etc. Last season our AD got fired, we had multiple suspensions and arrests, Green sold his jersey which was a distraction, etc. This season we don’t have any distractions that is taking away from what the team has set out to accomplish. The team seems pumped, locked, and ready to whip Boise but we’ll see how it plays out on the field. I heard that Boise isn’t looking good at all on offense, but we’ll see how they perform on Saturday night with a motivated, big, fast, tenacious defense gunning for them.

Spread the Red on Saturday night. It’s going to be so overwhelming for Boise to see a huge sea of red of nothing but Dawg fans. And it’s not the same as VT, Oregon, Oregon State, or anybody else they’ve faced. SEC fans are the best fans in the nation. They are relentless as our football team. They know when to get EXTREMELY loud and they know when to get very quiet. Boise State is in for a long, long night. Boise better not let UGA score first and let them get the momentum on defense. Oh hell, it’s on then. Say if we get up 7-0, or 10-0 or even 14-0, the defense will be licking their chops to finish this game off, defensive style!

Our O-line will be salivating when they see Boise’s D-line and knowing they have a chance to make a statement and give out punishment. All that frustration can be taken out. You can actually hit them as hard as you want legally in the game. Hit them, time and time again and there’s nothing anybody can do about it. Wrestle them, hit them, push them, whatever you gotta do O-line to get the job done. Do it to the best of your ability. This game is all on the lines.

Believe it or not we played well on defense at times last season. We had some lapses but that comes with not having experience in a new system. The 3-4 is a very technical defense and very hard to learn. It was our first season in the 3-4 and NOBODY on our team had experience in it. That played a huge role in us going 6-7. Also bad moments on offense too, but look for those mistakes to be cleaned up this season. Here’s a link: Watch it…. http://youtu.be/ieipPOkcidQ

You are surely a tech. fan. Why aren’t you on a tech. blog since they have that big opener against the terror of the south, “Western Carolina”? If you were playing Boise State you would be in the game in the same position as your oponent tonight. Getting a free paycheck, and a tune up for a good team. You need to show some maturity, which you obviously lack.

90% of my GT friends caught the “M Train” & are fun people who party as well as the Dawgs! It’s the idiots that didn’t go to either school that act like ‘necks or geeks. Dawgs will win big, then nip SC. After that, we’ll lay an egg against someone like the Vols or Techies. It’s football & they all get drunk 3 nights a week in Athens.

How is Mr. Jenkins doing with his leg injury? We will most assuredly need him to be ready to go, so if nothing else, he can spell Geathers and at best, have them both out there at the same time, to show Boise, where the beef is.

Funny Chip. ” There is a good chance Crowell will be starting.” Of course there is a good chance, Richt told him that while he was being recruited. However, he had to run off King and Ealey before he could live up to it. Yea, he is a Christian man all right. So let me get this straight, King can’t do his classwork after 5 years? Right. Ealey has a bad attitude so is a cancer to the team. The joke is going to be on Richt, because Ealey really was that good. Reality will soon kick in.

In Tech’s defense, they are not the ones that hate Ga. I hate Tech and Ga. I have forever. Mainly because of the big talkers that can not back it up. Fools. Ga will brag about beating the crap out of Vanderbilt for years. Something is wrong about that. Tech does not have any fans. Plain and simple.
How Ga could brag about beating Tech is a real mystery. Tech doesn’t care.

You make a lot of spuds also, but not everyone likes them. You should come onto another teams blog and at least show some respect for that team and yourself. This I now note, is not one of your better character traits.

He’s not from Columbus, but it’s good to read this about Jenkins, after his mostly-injured camp.

Backup nose guard John Jenkins drew praise from defensive coordinator Todd Grantham after Tuesday’s practice in shoulder pads and shorts. “John had his best practice today,” Grantham said. “I thought he was really dominant out there.”

So Whiskey Breath, since you are obviously Nick Saban II, tells us what Ealey did in 2010 that was so special that you label him as great?
Outside of running through the soft butter defense of UK, explain to us why we should miss him so much?
I remember this about him:
Multiple fumbles at key times in big games
Missing blocking assignments
Refusing to go to S&C sessions with his teammates
Hit and run in a parking deck
Suspended license
I’d rather watch Samuel, Crowell, Malcome and Harton than to have Ealey playing for us.
He had his chance and blew it. Talent, potential and ability are nothing without discipline and motivation. He had none.
Good riddance I say.

First, just to clarify, I am SEC all the way and will be pulling for the Dawgs on Saturday. That being said, here are my “feel goods” and “concerns” regarding UGA going into the game:
Feel Good About:
1) Lack of distractions – no finalist for the Fulmer Cup; no hit and runs; no shoebox full of outstanding parking tickets; no AD and mistress playing “show me yours and I’ll show you mine”
2) Strength & Conditioning program that actually includes strength and conditioning drills – hands on knees sucking wind in the 2nd quarter is not a good omen….looks like this has been remedied
3) 3-4 D – An attack defense rather than a reaction defense allows you to control the play….hit ‘em long, hard, deep and continuous and the game is yours by the 3rd quarter
4) Murray – plays smart, wants to win, has the respect and trust of his fellow players
5) Special Teams – An understatement to say strongest in college football….never underestimate the power to kick long field goals and pin the opponent inside their 5-yard line
Concerns:
1) Turnovers – IC and Samuel had limited practice time due to injuries and timing is critical for handoffs between QB and RB. If there’s any hesitation or wrong step then risk of fumbles skyrockets
2) Poor Blitz Execution – Not disguising your blitzes or being too slow to get in the backfield is not something you want to do against a guy who’s going to end up being the winningest QB in college football history
3) Underestimating BSU – They have a small D-Line……they play in a weak conference….they lost their two best WRs…..yeah, so did Appalachian State a few years ago before they played Michigan
4) Mike Bobo – do I really need to elaborate
Bottom line prediction is that each team will reach the end zone a few times but the edge goes to the team that can hit more field goals (hint: see #5 above).
Looking for Herman Archie
August 31st, 2011
10:01 am
Way back in the late late 70s or very early 80s, UGA had Columbus native Herman Archie playing split end at 6′5″ and about 220. He supposedly was going to change passing game as we knew it back then. He was way ahead of the now common place wide outs of today that are tall. He caught maybe 5 passes in those Dooley era years.
Where is Herman Archie now??? Man, was he highly, highly recruited out of Columbus.

The things you’re saying are just untrue. UGA is listed as a Public Ivey League school.
We also graduate a large percentage of our student-athletes. The majority of football players who don’t graduate leave early because they have a job waiting for them in the NFL that pays them millions of dollars.
Numbers came out recently that has UGA student-athletes at the top of SEC schools in grades.
Do a little research before you level false accusations about the University of Georgia. It’s an excellent school and I’m a proud graduate.

Lets see. A former player from tech. is alleged to have killed a woman on the streets. Using the same criteria as some of you use in rating a school, I guess that means that Tech. graduates and students are all bad people and should be compared to this one man.
How about another example. Hitler was of Polish descent and therefore all people of polish descent are all mass murders and should be eliminated from society. Comparing apples and oranges is easy if you are allowed to group all people into the same background and group based on where they graduated from high school, or the place they lived. Isn’t the inverse also true then. To use a bad example, is to say, Obama became president and he is from Illinois and therefore all people from Illinois should become president. Remember I said a bad example but it does apply, using the reasoning some of you are using.
