UGA alum Bob Behler is calling Boise State over the Bulldogs

Because the voice of the Boise State Broncos happens to be a UGA graduate, people assume Bob Behler must be torn about how he wants Saturday’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome to turn out.

Think again.

Behler

Behler

“There’s no question about it, I want Boise State to win,” Behler said Sunday. “That’s my team; it’s where I live; I know those kids.  I don’t know Mark Richt. He seems like a nice guy. But I’m friends with Chris Petersen. I’m wearing blue and orange to the stadium and I think Boise State is going to win the game.”

So let’s just go ahead and get that out of the way.

While extremely proud of his broadcast journalism degree from UGA’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and very grateful for his two productive years in Athens, Behler has put in a lot of miles at a lot of places since 1985. Most recently that has been Boise, Idaho, where he came to succeed Paul J. Schneider as the play-by-play voice in 2008.

You could say Behler’s timing is pretty good. He happened to catch the Broncos during the takeoff of what has continued to be a pretty awesome flight above the college football landscape.

“Thirty-eight and two since I’ve been here,” Behler spouts proudly. “Of course, [quarterback] Kellen Moore is 38-2 during that time, too, so that might have something to do with it.”

Behler didn’t know exactly what he was going to be in for when he accepted the Broncos’ gig. He’d spent 22 years calling I-AA games at Bucknell and UMass and, frankly, was just looking to call some Division I football.

In fact, he actually didn’t set out seeking Boise State. He applied for the play-by-play job at Virginia and the search firm handling that opening also happened to be involved with the Broncos. They asked Behler if he’d consider them, too.

“I said ’sure, why not,’” Behler recalled with a laugh. “You know which job I didn’t get.”

He got the better job. At this particular point Boise State is one of the hottest college football properties in the country and Behler has been along for every minute of the ride.

“I knew I was getting a team that had won a Fiesta Bowl [in 2007],” Behler said. “But did I think we’d be a Top 10 team every year? Probably not.”

So Behler was there when the Broncos won a second Fiesta Bowl in 2010 to cap off a 14-0 2009 season. He was behind the mic when they knocked off Oregon in 2008 and ‘09. And he was there last year in Washington, D.C., when everybody and their brother was assuring us that Boise couldn’t get it done  against a Virginia Tech team which was clearly too big and physical and had more tradition and whose fans were going to make up 80-plus percent of spectators in a pro football venue.

Sound familiar?

“I think this will be a great game, just like that one was,” Behler said, referring to Boise’s 33-30 win over the Hokies at FedEx Field.  “I give us the edge with Kellen Moore at quarterback and our defense is very, very good. Led the nation in sacks last year.  I also think our situation at running back is better. I think Georgia gets a big edge in the kicking game. Not sure about the lines.”

I asked Bob how the Bulldogs were being viewed out in Idaho.

“People think Georgia is a very talented and they know it’s going to be tough to play somebody from the SEC,” he said. “They’re concerned with their size and athleticism. All the same things they were concerned about with Virginia Tech.”

Behler was thrilled when he first learned his two favorite schools were hooking up. While his roots aren’t deep in the Georgia red clay of Athens, he credits the school for getting him where he is today.

A native of Stockton, Calif., Behler enrolled at UGA in 1983 because he wanted to “go someplace different” and because his high school journalism teacher new somebody on the UGA journalism faculty. Behler had called his high school’s games on radio and stayed behind the mic for two years of junior college.

At Georgia he was introduced to sports information director Claude Felton, who said he could work for him and call women’s basketball and baseball.

“Claude always impressed me in that he let his students do things that were important,” Behler said. “He was always around to help but he gave you real responsibility and let you get in there and do it.”

From Athens, Behler got a job broadcasting games for the Chattanooga Lookouts. Then he went north and worked for Bucknell for 13 years, then nine at UMass. Just about the time he felt like true Easterner, he was whisked back west.

“It’s different,” he said. “The town reminds me a little of Northern California. We’re in a valley and it’s not as rural as you might think. It’s a city of 500,000 people. But it gets pretty sparse a few miles out of town. You can’t just get in your car and drive to a lot of places.”

No need to leave. The Broncos are the biggest thing around. Behler is looking forward to watching Moore get the eight wins he needs to become the winningest college quarterback ever. And he’ll like it even more if the first victory comes against the old alma mater.

“Sometimes you get lucky and I certainly did,” he said being a Bronco.

Good for him. I hope he likes the taste of crow after Saturdays game. What else can he say? It appears to be the only job he could get with a div. 1 school, so he hasn’t got a lot of choice. After UGA, if Moore can’t pick up eigth wins in the conference they play in, then he will surely be in for a rude awakening if the NFL comes calling. I wonder what Boise’s record would have been, if they had been playing in the SEC for his time at Boise?

ugakev – gt ready to be diappointed! Boise will win this game.

I do think UGA will be improved – but with so many changes going on the program at key skill positions – and a questionable O-Line – and a defense that is trying to get it’s act together – I think it will take some time for UGA to jell. The potential is there for UGA to have a very good season.

The only question marks we have in terms on new players at key positions is WR. Like UGA, we lost our two best WR’s – but, our replacements should be good. Behler is correct – our defense is incredible – very fast – very athletic – and does have some size.

Expecting a good game – best of luck the rest of the season.

Redand Black Dawg – reagrding your question on what Boises record would have been if they had an SEC record during Behlers time at Boise – good hypotehitical.

Here is an answer:
– Our record LAST year would have been better than UGA’s.
I also believe we would have beaten Colorado and UCF.

In 2009 – I think Boise was the better team – as UGA could not beat OK State or KY.

IN 2008 – UGA jelled at the end of the year and playing extremely good.

So – I know it’s hypothetical – but based on games played and the downward sprial UGA has been on – Boise would have been better overall since Behler arrived on campus.

You asked – that’s a reply based on facts.

There’s a good chance when we play Boise State on Saturday that every starter from GA will be rated higher than every starter from Boise State out of highschool. We are bigger, faster, stronger, and definitely more atheletic. If we were to possibly lose, what would that say about our program?

Boise has no control over there conference opponents. They could get into another conference, but do you think that the SEC, Pac12, or the other BCS conferences would give them a chance? How have they performed in BCS bowls in which they have played. How has UGA performed in BCS bowls during the same time span?

The polls need to be removed from the championship deciding process of college football. At the start of the season, every team should have an equal shot at playing for the national championship, otherwise the system should be changed.

2010 Season Recap – this is true – then VT rebounded after the Boise loss took the win out of the sails – put them in a funk – and were beaten by James Madison……and went undefeated the balance of the regular season – beat FSU in the championship game for the ACC – but lost in their bowl game. The Same FSU team that whipped Florida – which beat UGA ……. again.

Also – UGA started off the year 1-4 – and lost to bottom feeder Colorado – a team that I would bet James Madision could beat. UGA’s highlight win of the 2010 season was a blowout win against Tennessee – which finished 6-7 – and of course beating GT – which finished…..6-7.

And your point is????????

Don’t be surprised if Boise wins. They are a good team that has won as many BCS bowl games as UGA in the past 25 years.

BIDDAWG – I am sure UGA’s players were also higher ranked, bigger , faster, stronger than Colorado and UCF – as well as OK State and KY the year before.

Their is a sense of parity in college football – but the problem with recruiting rankings is they look at a high school kid at that moment. Some of these 4-5 stars are peaked out – and maybe uncoachable – less upside potential.

For example – the kid from UGA that was a transfer from Western KY – and went on to play in the NFL a few seasons – verron Haynes. Nobody recruited this kid except for 1-AA schools – but he transferred to UGA. That kid had heart – was a fantastic player – lived up to his high end potential – and he is a reason why UGA became successful in Richt.

Boise’s team is full of Verron Hayes. We do a great job of finding these kids – they all have something to prove and play team ball – very unselfish.

Why not have Boise in the SEC so that Boise’s inferiority can be proven once and for all. Maybe Vanderbilt could be moved to another conference, oh wait, they are needed to keep some semblance of academic integrity in the SEC; providing actual STUDENT-athletes with actual college majors, unlike the majority of SEC schools with their athletes majoring in recreation and leisure studies, and general studies.

The question was, if BSU had been in the SEC over the last 5 years, what would their record look like?. Your response and “proof” was to suggest that BSU would have been better than Georgia during that span, which is a completely different debate. Go take a look at Florida’s October schedule and let us know how you think BSU would manage that grind on a year-to-year basis. That was the essence of the question. By no means am I discrediting what BSU has done over the last several years, and it’s very possible that you guys knock off the Dawgs come Saturday. But I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest that your record isn’t 55-5 (or whatever) if you’re playing an SEC schedule.

But it’s also been proven that when they do, they beat the lesson talanted teams almost every single time. Boise sure has gotten a lot of mileage out of three decent wins in the last ten years. Close victories over Va Tech, Okla and Oregon do not a dynasty make. Boise’s schedule is a joke, year in and year out, unless one is impressed with a steady diet of Toledo, Tulsa, Wyoming, San Diego ST and Idaho. That’s not a schedule, that’s a homecoming line-up for the next decade.

I like everyone want a victory, but I’ll be looking for two things to see if this has made the necessary improvements:
1) do we make in game adjustments. Last year I get we were didn’t have the experience or bodies to make the defense go but I couldn’t really tell where we adjusted to try what was working for the other team (a la carolina and gt running the ball).
2) Do we come ready to play and do we really finish the drill. If this team comes out flat and resembles anything that took the field against UCF or WV a few years ago, Im pretty much done with this coaching staff. I’m tired of glowing preseason reports and then a mediocre team taking the field. Its a gutsy move to allow the videographer to run the s&c program

Georgia’s offensive line is not a “question mark”. It is anchored by two projected first round NFL draft picks. The issue and “question mark” is depth. If, and it is a pretty big if, Georgia can get through these first two games without injury on the O-line they will be putting a very formidable O-line on the field. No one knows how the back-ups on the O-line can play – they could be just fine, or not….Hopefully it won’t be an issue.

Georgia has a lot of uncertainty going into this game, but there is a reasonable chance a lot of the uncertainty turns out to really, really nice surprises. We’ll soon know.

Funny thing though the PAC 10 sure did not want them and could have invited them and one cannot deny Boise is willing to play anyone anytime to help build their national rep. They do more with 2 and 3 star kids than anyone in the country. I just hope that UGA takes care of business and does not embarrass the SEC.

38-2….. Because they mostly play weak sisters. 9 games this year for them are rated 71 st OR higher on Rivals pre season 120. That translates into ALL patsies for SEC teams. Yes, they have a good team, but put teams ranked under say 35th or so every week in front of them, that 38-2 turns into say 20-20. Murray is going to have a field dayn against Boise. Our running game is underestimated to their peril. It will be enough to give Murray some play action opportunities.

One key thing this year versus last year-Murray didn’t know the offense well enough, especially early on to call check downs at the line of scrimmage. That means Bobo’s play call might not be the final play run(enter your smartalec Bobo bashing comment now).

I thought this would be fairly low scoring but I now think it is going to be a wild west shootout.

Since Boise State is favored in this game, for UGA, if we win, this is an attention-getter on the national scene, and a chance to redeem ourself for the past two dismal seasons.

If we can come out on our first offensive possession and move the chains consistently and score, maybe that will put BS in a mindset that maybe we can do that every position, and lessen their defensive strength.

If on our opening defensive set, we can stop them 3 and out or at least keep them from scoring, I believe this will disrupt BS’s offensive gameplan and give them some sense of doubt and uncertainty.

I know this is every team’s primary gameplan, but I hope we can pull it off. If we can play four complete quarters, I think Georgia wins and this will lessen the doubt that Murray can’t win the big game against a ranked opponent.

Hope we can. .. Go Dawgs!

Ok Boise in Atl .. I could just read and be entertained by your comments until a couple of them struck a nerve. NO, JMU could not beat Colorado. Even lower level DI schools should be able to handle a DII school. VT is an enigma for starters. They haven’t played high ranked or hyped games well at all. Look at their record against Top 10 teams. But to lose to JMU? Inexcusable no matter who you just lost to the week before. Again, 4 or 5 big wins in a 5 year span isn’t that impressive. Let them play 4 or 5 big games a year and see how it goes. Then I will be impressed.

The perception is Boise right now is a bit better than UGA, but that UGA has more talent. I say that makes the coaches the most important factor.

Who has the best gameplan? Who makes the best adjustments? Not who has the toughest conference, or the toughest schedule. Good conference vs bad conference doesn’t matter a bit in this, one, game.

boise in atl..boise st might have a few players who could play in the big boy conferences but your team is not full of them. your team is too small and too weak to deal with the talent and strenghth and speed of uga. va tech is playing a conference thats only better than big east and beating them last year was a good win for you guys but facing a team from the sec is a totally different monster. uga defense will be way better and we already know that uga players are bigger faster and more talented at just about every position. this game shouldnt be close. your qb will most likley be laying on his back the whole game or at least running for his life back there. your running back wont have the success he had against the weaker teams you guys play every week. boise st is way overrated and after sat it will suck for boise st fans to watch the rest of the season because a loss means the end of the season for you guys as you play noone else worthy to even watch.

hell ucf last year would have beaten you guys too. just go over the rosters again for each team and put a check where you think you have a btter player than uga. then let me know if you feel confident about a win against uga. thia is a whole new season at uga and this team is a whole lot better on both sides of the ball as time will tell.

I’m just not sure how Georgia could expect to win this one. It’s been a long way down since 2005. True, Boise doesn’t play much if any competition during their conference schedule, but they’ve already proven they can beat anyone in a one game matchup. I do feel Georgia’s front 7 is going to look more like something resembling an SEC front 7 than whatever that was last year, but Coach and QB and Boise are better right now. Aaron Murray is very good, but Georgia might not face a better QB the rest of the year. The good news for the Dawgs is that the Broncos have to replace both starting wide outs too.

XMAN what you say is true. If Boise loses their season is over; if UGA loses they still can redeem it by running the table in SEC. I expect UGA to win, however any UGA fan who thinks that just because they have more athletes than Boise that it will translate into a win is a moron. Boise plays hard and smart; if they lose it will not because of some bonehead play that one of their players makes. I wish that UGA could say the same. It also will not be because their head coach is so conservative that he kicks a fieldgoal on 4th and inches inside of the 5 yard line.

Yes, it is true that Boise has had severe academic shortcomings in its athletic program. Money quote:

However, despite its football team’s #6 ranking in the BCS and a spot in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in January (2010), Boise State University occupies the bottom rung of this achievement ladder with a school-wide graduation rate of only 26%.

They have ranked in the top 10 in APR the last few years, however, so they are making progress. That said, this ain’t an academic discussion it’s a football discussion, and I think the Dawgs are gonna have their hands full personally. I think it takes awhile for Murray to get accustomed to not having AJ around, and the defense ain’t an overnight fix. Boise comes in as the more mature team it seems.

I am so sick of hearing about Boise State. I’m tired of hearing comments like: “no one will play us” “everyone is scared to schedule us” “no conference will give us a chance” “we get robbed out of playing in the NC every year” “Georgia’s players are big, fat, and slow” “Georgia has no chance of beating BS” “BS is 38-2″ “our stats are incredible” BLAH BLAH BLAH…. We heard this same crap for months before the 2005 game – you remember that game, right? It was a blow out. Yes, I’m aware that things have changed for both teams since then. If a team beats high school teams every week their stats will look incredible, their record will look impressive, and their players will not be injured/beat down like a team that plays good teams every week. Preparing for one good team a year is a joke. Your schedule is a joke. Your field is a joke. I’m sick and tired of hearing about this BS crap. PLEASE Georgia beat the crap out of them so this will go away! Then maybe those BS big mouths will learn to eat a little crow.

All the coaching game plan in the world won’t help if guys are consistently getting beat off the ball, beaten to spots, pressured and pushed around.

Again, BSU is a quality team. You have to be to run the table in your conference. But they rarely play against a D that is even remotely ranked among the top defenses in the country. They won’t be playing Wyoming and even a down UGA team isn’t a pushover so all the trolls on here (again, a select few and a some BSU fans not withstanding) just throw out scores without even taking into consideration how difficult this game will be for BSU as well as UGA. Anyone that thinks Boise will be a cakewalk is in for a rude awakening. They have beat too many top teams to be taken lightly, Oregon, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, etc. It is true that we beat them pretty bad last time, but that was with a different quarterback and coach. And, that had to be the worst performance of his career. He literally threw the ball to us more than he did his own guys. I really feel that UGA will be much improved, especially on defense. But, Boise is ranked #5 for a reason, and will be looking for revenge in this game. UGA will be hungry also, and the dome should be rocking in red, so it should be a great game. I will be absolutely thrilled with even a one point victory.

Bois will miss their two starting WR’s from last year who are now in the NFL They have almost all of their other starters back. The experience level is much higher with Boise than with UGA. The few starters that UGA does have back have mostly moved around to other positions – with the exception of QB. Georgia has better athletes but Boise is right up there in talent also. Boise has experience which counts for a lot. On the other hand Georgia is playing near home. It will take a supreme effort by Mark Richt to get his team of round pegs in the right holes and ready the first game of the year. Good luck Dawgs.

In 2005 UGA beat the crap out of Boise and no doubt the heat on Sept 3 that year between the hedges played a factor; Boise was not used to it and UGA was. I know that the Broncos must do some hitting in practice, so either they are super men who don’t bruise or the Boise paper doesn’t do a very good job of covering the team. I think it will be a good game, but don’t underestimate Georgia’s offensive line. The headlines make it seem like it is weak, but look closer. The issue with UGA’s line is experienced depth. At this point, the coaches are comfortable with two backups, but the starting five is the largest that UGA has ever assembled at about 325 pounds per man. That is bigger than many NFL lines. By all accounts they are playing well together. Georgia has 5-6 very good defensive lineman this year, so if the the OL is doing well against them in practice, that is a very good sign.

Last year, this was inexpicably one of the weak points on the team. However, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if our offensive line dominates this game.

I believe that going from Caleb and Washaun to Isaiah and Richard is a VAST upgrade. The line is thin in depth but stronger in experience than last year. To be honest, VT hasn’t proven a thing lately either. In the last 3 years, VT has lost to James Madison, North Carolina, East Carolina, Miami and Boston College. On paper, the game is a mis-match…and UGA should win handily. (But then…you can say the exact same thing about the Liberty Bowl last year against UCF.)

Boise State has a good coach, and some good athletes, as well. They don’t attract the 4 and 5-star recruits like the SEC programs do, but they have a lot of 2 and 3-star players who come in and work hard. (And who sometimes have a chip on their shoulder from not being ranked as highly as they thought they should have been…so they hit the weight room hard, and play with a little aggressive resentment.) BSU is starting 14 seniors. Their senior class is 38-2, with a BCS Bowl win. This is going to be a good game, and I damn sure hope Coach Richt has the team ready to play hard.

I don’t want to belabor this “new uniform” crap, because I know that was Nike’s doing and not Coach Richt’s this time. But I sure wish he didn’t seem so delighted with it, and wasn’t pushing that “let’s red out the stadium!” mess. We red out the stadium every game, Coach. (Except for the time you asked us to “black out” the stadium for Alabama.) Get the team ready to play hard from the opening kickoff, and the support will be there.

If Georgia does win, I don’t think we will be reading these blogs on Sunday and Monday about how UGA somehow overcame a top 10 defensive line to get a victory over the 5th best team in the nation.
——————————————————-
Its not that Boise’s D-Line is unstopable. More like they won’t be a pushover.

Ga’s D-line vs Boise’s O-line is a different story. Ga will control that matchup.

Size mismatch here. There will be no “ease” to it for BSU. BSU knows that their D can whip UNLV pretty good but they have no idea what they have against a MUCH bigger O-Line with multiple NFL prospects.

4 and 5 star athletes don’t make a difference. How well you coach your athletes makes all the difference. BSU looks for a certain type of athlete. They must fit in the system and be team players. Look at the starting tailback. Since he was a fresman, all his teamates say he is one of the strongest and best athletes on the team. He is an absolute beast. Up until last year he was plaing linebacker, because he was too valuble to not have on the field. how many 5 star athletes in big programs would transfer if some coach tried to do that to them. That’s why coach Pete is able to get more from the collective team than most coaches would get from individual players. 5 star players don’t win championships. Teams win championships.

Says it all huh?

NCBF:

A top 10 line is unstoppable, it means that there are only 9 defensive lines that are better in all of college football. It means that a team like Georgia that has all these problems on the offensive line, no AJ, a former linebacker and an overated freshman at RB and a midget QB shouldn’t be able to cross the 50 yard line.

All the prognosticators are picking Boise to win the game. I haven’t heard a single talking head that has picked the Dawgs.

Boise 34-21. Difference in game will be Boise defensive line. Not big but very athletic and agile and much quicker than given credit for. Dogs defense while appearing better on paper picked the wrong offensive style to open with. Broncos crossing patterns and underneath curls will wear down an improved Georgia defense. Dawgs could lose and yet be better from it when the dust clears by season end.

I don’t know who will win this Saturday, but I believe it will be closer than most people think…I think the main difference from this BSU team and the one in 05 is that the Coaching is much better, BSU has much more depth than in 05 and the Defensive front 7 is probably the best front 7 in college football…and there is depth at ever position, so we won’t get as tired as the team in 05. That is one of the biggest changes over the past 7 or 8 years. In 2005 if we lost a starter, there was a big drop off, now with the exception of a few positions (QB, Safety ETC.
most of the backups could be starting too.

For all the UGA fans that are sure that Boise St has no chance against UGA because they have a lower ranking on Scout, UGA is currently the underdog for this game. Mike,

I don’t think there is any question that serious college football fans respect what coach Pete has done with 2 and 3 star recruits. He gets them to play and they are a pleasure to watch. To flat out say that 4 and 5 star players “they don’t make a difference” is something I disagree with.

If you look at the last 10 national champions, they were ALL won with 4 and 5 star athletes. I think it helps a little to start with great players. It isn’t enough to have good recruiting classes, but it is the reason that 50 year old coaches that make millions are begging the top 100 high school players in the country to come play for them.

I understand that Boise recruits a certain kind of player, but if Keith Marshall made an official visit to Boise State… I think Coach Pete would drop everything and pick the kid up at the airport. I don’t think he would say, we are looking for a running back that fits our system and I’m not sure you are it.

Vegas lines are not set based on the prediction of which team will win the game. The sportsbook department does not care which team wins. They care about 50% of the money being bet on both sides of the line and they hope not to move the line too much so that they don’t get “middled”. The line is set so that the maximum amount of money will be bet with 50% being bet on Georgia and 50% being bet on Boise State so that the casino can make their 10% vig with no risk.

That’s true I-DOG, which means that just as many people are betting on Boise St to cover a 3-3.5 point spread as there are people betting on UGA to cover as an underdog. In other words, most betters in Vegas right now think Boise St will win the game. If not then the spread would be lower or in UGA’s favor. If the odds were set on the AJC blogs then UGA would be like a 45 point favorite.

If our larger offensive line just knocks the small Boise line off the ball every play. We’ll get 4 yards per play and win with no problem. “Paddy”, only thing wrong with your assessment of recruiting is that the top schools in recruiting “usually” have top-ranked teams at season’s end…eg Bama, LSU, Flawduh, Okey. I repeat, “usually” or “generally”.

“Boise in ATL”, good posts. You mostly back your statements with reason, logic, and facts. Not to mention you seem to know more about UGA football than many “fans” here on the blogs. I’m also one of those that think that BS has a cream puff schedule year in and year out. BUT, they win those games against ranked teams fairly consistently. I guess that’s what most of us on Dawg blogs hold against them; that if they played a bruising SEC schedule the outcomes would be different. But, they do seem to win the big games. Heck, look at TCU’s schedule- 5 or 6 “Coastal Carolinas”; yet they’re ranked.

No doubt K. Moore is a great QB. And no doubt BS has a good D; and a very inventive/innovative head ball coach. Sometimes we Dawgs fans can be pretty myopic.

But, here’s hoping the Bulldogs treat y’all like we did the last game; and that vaunted, high-powered Hawaii team. I’d dare say most of the pundits, announcers, etc won’t give us a chance.

How about the last ten years? I doubt that very seriously. I am not even sure they would have been in the hunt for a div. title in the SEC, much less the SEC conference.
UGA isn’t the only team in the SEC either. How would you compare to Florida, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, or for that fact most of the SEC teams if you played them on a regular basis? 1. It is indoors so the heat will not be a factor as it was in 2005.

3. UGA wins late 27-24.

Don’t you think Jarvis Jones’ eyes will light up when he sees Kellen Moore back there in the pocket? Don’t you think Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith’s eyes will light up when they see that ball in the air knowing that it’s there’s? They just gotta make a play on it. DBs think that way. When that ball is in the air, they are the receiver and it’s there’s. Just gotta get it. I’m excited about our secondary. Branden Smith has lights out speed and can outrun all of Boise’s WR’s. Boykin is the more physical corner but he is very fast as well. Should see lots of turnovers.

It really doesn’t matter who the media thinks will win because they only base their predictions on what they’ve seen last. It hurts but lets be honest, we weren’t that good last season. But what they don’t know is what’s going happen this season. They don’t know how hard we’ve worked. They don’t know how much the attitude and culture around our program has changed. Georgia is going to play with a chip on their shoulder and play like Richt could be fired if they lose this game alone. They’re going to play this game as if Richt was being held over a big boiling pot and if they lose he falls in and dies, but if they win he is freed. That’s how they are going to approach this game.

Boise in Atl- I think Boise’s a good team, & VT losing to Boise could very well have taken a bit out the sails of them & ended up affecting them the following them the following week against James Madison. I just know VT had lost a lot of their defensive starters from the yr.t earlier before, & I’ve seen many teams that have lost a lot of players start out slow before they start to improve, & end up the season much better than they started it. I was impressed by Boise’s win, but not as much so after the James Madison game, & especially considering the amount of players VT had lost. The last time Boise beat Oregon it was the 1st game of the yr., & I believe it was Chip Kelly’s 1st yr. as coach. So, it’s reasonable to think that they very well may have struggled a bit earlier in the season. They appeared to have really gotten hot after that game though.

Simply put, Boise is a media creation. They play a weak schedule, beat up on nobodies, then sneak up on major programs at bowl games the big schools don’t even really want to be at. Mike,

Wasn’t Boise’s graduation rate like 17% a couple of years ago, I don’t know about all this good student suff? Are you telling me that Coach Pete turns down Keith Marshall if Marshall wanted to play at Boise?

I would also anticipate that Boise’s recruiting has gotten better and will get better as they continue to rack up wins and play in big bowl games and upset some of the “big boys” of college football. How can anyone say that this guy isn’t a heckuva a coach and he will attract “better athletes” if things continue this way.

As it stands now, Boise is not loaded with 4 and 5 star athletes and I don’t think it is because the coach doesn’t want them. I expect a well conditioned, disciplined, and well coached team overall to be facing my Dawgs on Saturday, but I don’t think we will be outsized, speeded, and athleted (I made those words up, but I like them) and I just hope we play well enough to get a W.

TampaGawg,

I think some folks for other teams come on to a blog concerning UGA because ofa few things. In the case of tech. fans, it is really just jealousy. It really bothers them to know they will not beat UGA the great majority of the time.
The second reason is because some of these people for other teams, really think they can somehow affect the outcome of the game, by trash talking. They change names to hide their idenity because they are embarrassed by what they type. It could also be the fact that, they are really scared UGA will beat their team. Possibly, also, is the fact that some of them need these blogs to make them feel important. They are lacking any real relevance or repsect from their peers, in their lives so, this is it. A pretty poor way to try and gain respect though.

Some decent posts – some crazy ones as well. Love football in the South!

guys – I never said it would be an easy game – just rooting for my team – and realize that we perform well in big games.

To address some criticisms about Boise State Football:
1. Weak schedule – not our fault – we have left our league behind and trying to upgrade. Thanks to the Oregon’s, VT and UGA’s of the world that play us. This game is a no win situation for established status quo teams.
2. UGA players too big, too fast, too athletic for Boise State to handle
– UGA went 6-7 last year – and I am sure this was UGA’s arguement regarding Colorado and UCF
– Boise is better athletically than you realize – hey, beating Oregon once would be an upset – but beating them twice (including a Rose Bowl year) and beating VT (in an ACC title year) let’s you know that this team can play with anyone.
3. UGA will blow Boise off the field
– see #2
– hey – could happen – I think it will be an exciting game with an improved and focussed UGA staff and team trying to distance last years poor showing.
– Also consider Coach Petersen not only knows how to prepare the team – and the game plan against the strengths and weaknesses of our opponents – but game day coaching is incredible.

Taking nothing for granted – Boise will compete in this game – and I think will win based on the fact that UGA has too many new players and new moving parts that need to jell. We are catching UGA at the best possible time.

Boise is a very well coached team with that being said, Coach Richt has won a big game or two in his tenure at UGA so it’s not like he is not accustomed to playing big time opponents. Some bloggers above have mentioned Boise State and the PAC 12 in the same breath. That will never happen..;Boise State is not a state chartered research university which is the first qualification to get into any major conference. The University of Idaho is the only one in that state . Boise State is never going to get a PAC 12 invitation .

A couple of days ago someone mentioned BYU as a possible PAC 12. No way that will ever happen either. The PAC 12 nor any other conference is going to let BYU in and have their 26 year old seniors dominate the normally aged seniors.

Will they even be able to THINK about stopping our running game? No.

Will their defense be on the field all game, while their offense watches and cannot do any scoring? Yes

Bronco fans,

don’t get scared of UGA. They are paper tigers for the most part. They couldn’t beat UCF in the last game they played. Their best player Arron Murray couldn’t throw a TD in that game.

Since that game, their 2 most experienced RB’s are gone, while a couple of unexperienced freshmen are added to their roster.

Yes, they are big and fast. They are a top-10 recruiting team. But it’s been like that every year. That is nothing new.

Like Texas, not many teams can beat them on paper. The state of Texas and Georgia have 1/3 of the football talents in this country. You’d imagine Texas and UGA had won 10 NC’s between the 2. Actually they only won 1 in the last 30 years. Only 1.

Columbus – revisit your post – you are claiming athletic and coaching superiority – yet you are predicting Boise to score 33 points. Love it!

Hey – this could turn into a shootout game. I have NO idea what will happen except that Boise should be extremely sharp as we are returning 14 senior starters that included an incredible accurate QB that can pick a defense apart in terms of play calling, short and long passes.

For Boise to win – we have to be the smarter team, make less mistakes – and function a as a unit better than UGA. This is how we we give ourselves a chance to win. And – as mentioned earlier – we have a team full of Verron Haynes type of players. Excellent Athletes with high potential – yet overlooked by the traditional big boys. These type of players have a chip on their shoulder and will play every last minute – never quit. We do a great job of getting these players to Boise – and coaching up their potential.

Again – UGA has so many new players and issues they are resolving – I think it will take a few games to jell. UGA starting off 0-2 is very much a potential reality.

Listen, we all heard this same thing a few years back when it was Zabransky and Co. This was going to be the big statement game for Boise and a kickoff to Zabransky yada, yada, yada.

Here’s a more realistic look at what will likely happen as stated in a post game article on ESPN from the 2005 game…

…Meanwhile, Jared Zabransky and the high-scoring Broncos were totally overwhelmed by Georgia’s revamped defense, which didn’t seem to have any trouble replacing David Pollack, Thomas Davis and Odell Thurman, three defensive stars who moved on to the NFL, or coordinator Brian VanGorder, who also landed a job in the pros.

For Boise State, ranked in the preseason for the first time, the opener was a jarring lesson in big-time football.

“We got spanked,” coach Dan Hawkins said. “Georgia is a very good football team. That had a lot to do with it.”

I get it, it’s not 2005 and since then Boise beat “Choke-la-homa” and a VT team that came out flat because they read too much of their own press and still nearly won the game.

Boise is not going to sneak up on the Dawgs, they aren’t going to overlook them like we did UCF and like OK and VT did. It’s a little different when they see you coming.

not properly utilized

what part of not breaking the law and actually going to class makes them underutilized?

Ealey scored 7 TD’s last year-5 against Kentucky. I don’t think that is any great performance that we are going to sit back and say “wow I sure wish we had Ealey back”

I’d rather watch a kid like Samuel who actually goes to class, is smart, works in UGA Compliance Office in the offseason. He and Thomas Brown have been mentoring Crowell. Remains to be seen if IC gets it.

I can get excited watching guys who actually try and do things right.

The only thing that Ealey and King underutilized were there own opportunities.

Does anybody really have a clue what kind of team Georgia will field? I don’t think anybody really knows how well they will play, even the coaches. Based on what I saw last year and what I think the Dawgs have done to improve themselves, I’d say Boise 38 Dawgs 13.

Until the Dawgs prove they are showing up to mind the business at hand and play hard-nosed football I’m not believing anything except they are overstocked with overrated and self-absorbed players. The team has been sorely lacking for character and leadership in the locker room and on the field the past 2-3 years. What do they need? Tough-nosed line play on both sides of the ball, play-making linebackers, DBs that can cover, and skill players who can report eligible for the games. Other than that they appear to be in good shape.

Eleven of the prettiest, softest creme-filled ho-hos you have even seen. And I’m including that flash-in-the-pan TCU.

They have beaten Oregon (before they became BCS contenders) and and a couple of other second-tier teams…and they got extremely lucky against Oklahoma…once.

Boise will be clicking on all cylanders. They’re experienced and know that their season rides on this game. AND they have experience in playing an all or nothing game to start the season. Having said that, however, UGA doesn’t have to be clicking on all cylanders to win. They just have to play with passion the whole 60 minutes. VT almost won last year with a horrendous 1st half. Then their size and athleticism took over. Odds are UGA won’t have that kind of half and have even better athletes than VT.

Now seriously what does that tell YOU.

Either….

A few tidbits for everyone.
1. The first game and last (bowl) game are always the most unpredictable. No one and I mean no one knows which Boise team or which UGA team will show up.

2. Defense tends to dominate in these type games. Offenses have not gelled, defenses just read and react.
Last years BSU/VT was the exception.

3. As Vegas underdogs, UGA historically comes to play. Betting against the Dawgs, when they aren’t
supposed to win is perilous. Conversely, the Dawgs don’t do well as favorites.

4. Coach Mark Richt’s butt is on the line. The players as a whole, love and respect him. They will work their
gonads off to win for the Big Dawg,

5. The UGA defense has 2 veteran NFL coaches on it, Grantham and Olivadotti. They know how to prepare.
Yes, Petersen’s is a great coach, but he may have his hands full with the Dawgs. BSU does not run a Florida
type spread offense, which the Dawgs have trouble with. The 3-4 will enable UGA to adjust to BSU’s endless
tailback and TE motions. Although a little different, Arkansas’ offense is the most similar to BSUs.

6. If Murray and company can control a little clock and not turn the ball over UGA will win. BSU’s weakness on
defense is their secondary. If we can pound the ball and force their safeties to creep up, our WRs/ TEs will
run wild.

7. We have a huge advantage in special teams. Richt needs to utilize our largest strength. Use Butler to pin
them deep and have Walsh ready to bail us out if the O bogs down. Go after their new kickers and use our
speed al a Boykin and have some break-backing returns.

8. UGA over BSU 24-14.

Only 6 points – just 2 field goals – and averaged 2.5 yards a carry? While Murray went 50% and less than 200 yards and zero (0) TDs and 2 (two) Interceptions??
WOW – don’t make fun of other teams – UGA.

No way Boise State will lose to a middling SEC team coming off a losing season capping 3 years of decline. UGA won’t score an offensive TD until its third game. What on earth has UGA done to make anyone think it can beat a top ten team with a Heisman candidate senior QB? Boise State’s athletes are just as big, bad, and fast as Georgia’s. Plus they have the advantage of knowing that no football pundit in the country wants to see them lose. Boise State whipping any SEC program will generate enough sport show controversy to keep commentators busy with inane speculation until bowl season. UGA will lose with dignity, 23-12.

No doubt Boise State would have a much different record over the last few years if they played in the SEC. However, they would have still been a top 25 team. They are ranked 5th in the nation and ahead of Georgia so they are probably the better team. However, it should be close and I predict the team that makes the least mistakes will win.

Vandals Reek

August 29th, 2011
8:57 pm

As we head into the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game on September 3rd, us Boise State fans have heard all of the insults from the fans of Georgia and other BCS teams.

Every cliche’ argument from strength of schedule to playing on the “smurf turf” has been brought forth in an effort to minimize the Broncos’ impressive run over the past 10 years.

This happens every year, whether its Virginia Tech before they lost or Oregon before they lost twice to Boise State.

So to all you Dawg fans trying to act like you’re not nervous, here’s some fascinating facts for you.

1. Boise State is 46-12 on green fields in the past 10 years with only five losses in the past five years. That record is the third-best away record in all of Division FBS schools.

2. The players see the field on a different plane while playing, otherwise it would be really tough for BSU to dominate every opposing team on the blue when his receivers are camouflaged.

3. Boise State beat Fresno State 51-0 at Bronco Stadium wearing orange uniforms. This was actually one of the most dominating performances in BSU history. Maybe they should wear a different colored uniform on “The Blue.”

Another argument they bring up is the weak schedule.

1. There is some validity in this argument but just point out that the Mountain West Conference is actually ranked higher then the Big East—a fellow BCS conference.

2. Also, point out that Boise State wins when they get to play BCS schools. In the Chris Petersen era, Boise has lost only one game against a BCS team including some wins over Oregon when they won the Pac-10 in 2009 and Virginia Tech when they won the ACC in 2010. But don’t worry, this argument will get easier after a win in Atlanta.

3. Third argument you could make is that in BCS rankings (which takes strength of schedule into account), Boise State has finished the season ranked:

in the BCS top five twice in the past five years

in the BCS top 10 five times in the past seven years

and in the BCS top 25 seven times in the past eight years.

Keep in mind, BSU has only been a Division 1-A school since 1996 and didn’t join the WAC until 2001.

From the Georgia fans, you will also get the argument of the last time Boise went to Georgia and we lost by a significant amount.

I guess the blue turf really does give them an advantage. 1. Other then the obvious argument that the two teams meeting in 2011 are vastly different than the teams that met in 2005, BSU was being coached by Dan Hawkins at that point, and he did not adequately prepare Boise State like Coach Petersen would have. That is evident when he went to Colorado and proceeded to tank the Buffaloes during his tenure there.

2. You will have to concede that Georgia was very good that year. They went on to win the SEC championship, and BSU was in a rebuilding year but still only lost four games. They should have won. This year is much different. This Boise State team is much better, and this Georgia team is much worse then the last time they met.

Some will want to bring up the Nevada game last year. Well, if its a Georgia fan, this is too easy.

1. Just comment on their big wins over Idaho State and Louisiana-Lafayette in their 6-7 run last year. However, don’t mention the fact that they lost to an unranked Mississippi State, Florida and Colorado as it may hurt some feelings. Also, try to contain the laughter if you have to mention Colorado. Meanwhile, BSU hasn’t had a losing season in 13 years.

2. You can mention that Nevada finished the season at No. 11 right behind No. 9 Boise State but far ahead of Georgia, and Nevada finished 13-1 that year. Plus BSU lost in overtime by three.

The Boise State NASCAR. Photo Courtesy of Brian Scott 3. Don’t mention the bowl loss to Central Florida either. I bet that one stings Georgia fans too.

The last insult I hear a lot is the fact that BSU is essentially a high school team because our stadium holds 33,500 fans, and they are right it does only hold about 34,000.

1. There is only one argument to this, and that is Boise has only been a Division 1-A school for the last 15 years. Georgia has been playing at a high level for over 100 years.

In that 100 years, Sanford Stadium is the best they can come up with? Hell, it’s not even good enough for the kickoff game let alone the best in the SEC. Give Boise State 100 years and see what kind of stadium they come up with.

In the next five years, BSU will increase its stadium from 33,500 to 53,000, and BSU will still maintain their home winning streak.

Some other interesting facts to use against Georgia. Did you know:

Boise State has the same amount of BCS bowl wins as Georgia.

Boise State has been ranked higher then Georgia in the BCS in four of the last five years?

Boise State has a NASCAR race car and Georgia doesn’t? That especially crushes Georgia fans. Oh, and it will race in Atlanta the same day BSU plays Georgia. Well played Broncos.

And last but not least, go ahead and mention the fact that the Georgia coach thought Kellen Moore had graduated, and that’s why they took the game but then tried to cover it up by saying he was joking. Joke or not, that sure is motivating for his players.

Hopefully, this helps you fight the good fight against the BCS powers or at least gives you some fire power against that crazed Georgia fan in your office.

Plus, at the very least, you can comment on Georgia’s hideous bright red Nike Pro Combat Uniform with the red stripe down the face mask.

Good luck Dawg fans and let the games begin.

The key for Ga will be 2 things….

1) win the turnover battle.

2) Ga’s LBs must play fast and physical with no YAC.

I feel confident with Ga’s ability to maintain at least a slight advantage in the trenches.
I like Ga’s secondary….there is some good experience there.

But…..last years defense looked miserable at times and what I always saw was our LBs going at half speed and not tackeling well. If Richt wants to keep his job….that p-poor play on defense must change. It really looked like a lack of defensive effort on last years team.

My gut feeling is Ga will be very good this year and they will defeat Boise st 27-17.

Wow, Vandals! That was impressive!

All those facts aren’t going to mean much when your team loses Saturday night.

Yes, it’s true we have suffered through some terribly low moments the last three years.

Yes, it’s true your team has been very successful.

Ain’t gonna mean squat come Saat-i-dee.

We have recovered from our downturn, unlike our pitiful government-induced anemic national economy.

Saturday, the Univerity of Georgia will not just be playing for their fans. Nor will they be playing for some BCS ranking, and they won’t be on some misguided quest for R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Saturday, OUR DAWGS will also be playing for their coach, for themselves, and for the SEC.

We will be victorious because we are DAWGNATION!

“Beware of The Dawg”

On a side note…I did find it humorous that you and the rest of your fan base actually believe that your quality of athletes is equal to that on teams in the PAC-10, ACC, or…and this is the funniest part…the SEC.

The kids on your team are there by and large because they were not recruited by the BCS schools.

Why is that?

Did they ALL decide to commit to BSU because of hometown pride?

Or was it because they might actually get to play a little on a team like yours. I mean, I can almost understand that. That, as opposed to never playing at all unless it’s a blowout on either side.

I think KM is a very good quarterback and fits well in Petersens’ system. But do you think a 5′10″ guy with limited mobility and only moderate arm strength, (accuracy notwitstanding) would be a starter on any of the top SEC teams?

The answer is most definitely NO.

Good luck Saturday. Your going to need it.

Boise has enough talent to get the job done, and superior coaching on top of that. We better show up ready to play from the opening whistle or it’ll be a long game.

To the question that was asked, “If Boise played in the SEC would they go 6-7″. I think Boise State would smash every team in the SEC and do it with authority. The reason is because Boise State is a good football team who operates on a shoestring budget. What is it? 3 million or so a year. The average SEC team has a budget of 6 to 8 times that! If Boise State had that kind of money and national showing I am certain they would get the so called 5 star talent and better equipment than they have now. Until the SEC teams run a football budget of only 3 mil a year and still win games, they need to stop hating all the small schools.

Boise Boy,

I think you might be a little confused here. You came onto a blog from a Georgia paper and started bad mouthing UGA and now the SEC and boasting about Boise. Do you expect UGA fans put down their own school and praise yours just because you come onto a blog? I don’t care what size Boise is. They are the opponent and I and every fan of another SEC school wants to beat an outsider. Size of school has nothing to do with it. Comments like” Boise State would smash every team in the SEC and do it with authority”, insure you will get negative comments shot your way. Certainly, you are mature enough to understand that.

GO DAWGS and GATA

I’m with boise boy…if Boise St. had the money of most SEC schools they could probably just play in the NFL…and cure cancer….and shoot lightning out of their fingers…Boise St. is the greatest football team to ever play the game…why even play this season…give Boise St the BSC trophy now…heck, give the the World Series trophy too…

Greetings from Razorback country. As much as I may dislike Georgia (as I hate everyone in the SEC. That’s how you know you’re in a good conference!), I’d appreciate it if you guys would thrash Boise State so I can quit hearing about them all the time. I’ll never say this again, but Go Dawgs! Give ‘em a proper SEC welcome.
