Saturday’s practice report: Branden Smith day-to-day with foot injury

ATHENS — A week away from its season opener, Georgia’s football team practiced Saturday without one of its starting cornerbacks, its No. 1 punt returner and an occasional offensive playmaker.

Branden Smith, who is all of the above, missed the practice with a foot injury sustained in practice on Thursday.

Coach Mark Richt described Smith’s status as a day-to-day matter, but -– with the days dwindling before the season opener against Boise State -– expressed optimism he will be able to play.

“We don’t think it’s serious,” Richt said of the injury. “Nothing that would require surgery. I guess the ol’ day-by-day is the best way to describe it.”

Asked specifically if he expects Smith to play against Boise State, Richt said: “I do, yes.”

If Smith is healthy, he will join Brandon Boykin as Georgia’s starting cornerbacks, with Jordan Love the third corner in nickel packages. Richt said freshman Damian Swann would be next in line for playing time at cornerback if Smith were sidelined.

Sanders Commings, who moved from cornerback to safety late in spring practice, seems set at his new spot. “He’s our No. 1 safety right now, along with Shawn [Williams],” Richt said.

That officially confirmed what had become apparent on the practice field –- that Bacarri Rambo, who started all 13 games last season, isn’t currently a first-team safety. Richt said only that Rambo “has done well” in preseason.

Richt indicated kickoff returner Boykin also would handle punt returns if Smith isn’t able to go. Swann and fellow freshman Malcolm Mitchell would be the next options to return punts, Richt said.

Trip to the Dome

The Bulldogs were back on the Woodruff Practice Fields on Saturday after busing to the Georgia Dome, site of the opening game, for a closed practice Friday.

“I wanted them to just get in there and get a little taste of it,” Richt said.

They even broke out the Nike pro-combat uniforms they’ll wear for the game against Boise State.

“The first time they put them on, I figured they’d be primping a little bit, maybe be a little too focused on the uniform rather than the game,” Richt said. “So I was trying to get [that] out of the way so they could get over that. And when we go play next week, we won’t have to worry about taking pictures or looking in the mirror.”

Linebacker Alec Ogletree said the trip to the Dome was beneficial.

“We got in there and got to go in the locker room and … learn how to run on the field and stuff,” Ogletree said Saturday. “A lot of the guys have never played in the Dome or even been to it, so [the trip] took off some of the edge that we had about being excited about the Dome and just got us back to playing football.”

Jenkins still out

Nose guard John Jenkins, the much-touted junior-college transfer, remained sidelined with a hamstring injury Saturday.

“He’s still not ready,” Richt said. “I’m hoping Monday. . . . It’s not 100 percent he’ll be back Monday, but we’re hopeful.”

Kwame Geathers is slated to start at the nose against Boise.

Etc.

Richt expects wide receiver Marlon Brown, sidelined for several days with an ankle injury, to return to practice  Monday. . .  Tailback Richard Samuel practiced Saturday and continues to work his way back from a quadriceps injury.  “He’s getting there,” Richt said. “I wouldn’t say he’s full speed.” . . . The team has Sunday off. . . . Monday’s practice is scheduled to be the Bulldogs’ last in full pads before the opener.

Boise Blue,
Thank you for being a college football fan unlike Vandals Reek.
While BS has played together for a while the dawgs status at this point is unknown. Dawg fans are taking this game seriously too. Any BS fans that don’t and claim victory because of ’selective’ past actions is… well, foolish. It seems to a lot of dawg fans that ‘entitlement’ permeates the BS fan base.
Off the soapbox, the best thing that I can wish for you is no injuries because I, of course, hope we win.

We goning to prove Dawgs is bsck and Boys Eez don’t belong on same field with the SEC but back on smurf turf. Boys Eez QB with the loud mouth not making it through first quarter. Then Ben Jones get nasty and whoops whole Boys Eez D-line with the blasting they deserve.

Our next trip to Dome will be later in year to win SEC champs. That why we reloads with talent each year of recruited Dream Team. Boys Eez never won games against real men of SEC with speed and size. And Dawgs exposing all those SEC and NFL talents on Boys Eez.

Do you think they were able to take home all those cool threads they got to poise in? It must be great to have all of the state of Alabama’s Interests in your favor that stories like this just disappear from the national spotlight! Go Dawgs !! We’ll do it with Class !!! “We don’t think it’s serious—nothing that would require surgery”

What in the world does that mean ?

He has a foot injury that surgery could be performed on, but it wouldn’t help ?

Good heavens.

We

“don’t think”

it’s serious.

If it is not serious, you say, ah that is not serious. And, of course, you don’t put a walking boot on and say there is no reason for it.

This entire Fall Camp has been a huge disappointment, starting with 26 players attrition no longer on the team, to the 2 who flunked out of the Dream Team, and continuing through every day the Dream Team who did make it, basically all being injured or for whatever – pulls, strains, hamstrings – just never got the opportunity to get ready to contribute for the 1st time.

I am still going with 11-3, but only because of the soft easy schedule including no top team and of the 5 who are currently ranked, clearly Auburn and Florida have no business being ranked. Boise State is no match for UGA with their in fact 8 wins vs the 6 BCS Conferences ever, including no win against any impressive football team, ever. South Carolina lost 5 games, so how great are they ? Missy State doesn’t have our talent level here at Missy State.

11-3 and we will have beat no one.

I’d like to see us play well against Alabama, however, before we play another podunk opponent in yet another bowl game against podunks.

FLA DAWG, does that sound like I find what has gone on around here the last 3 years, 5 years or 10 years with Mike Bobo and Mark Richt, acceptable to you son ?

1. “we are hoping for a victory.”

2. “I believe Georgia easily has a Top 5 defense, and a Top 15 Offense. Your team is a national championship contender.”

3. “We have had a great time chatting with your fans online (great fans) and look forward to tailgating with “y’all”.”

Go Broncos!

1. Hoping for a victory ? You have the grand sum of 8 wins EVER against ANY of the 6 BCS Conferences in 31 games, 25 percent win percentage. Put the pipe down, son. You know they have doctors for this, don’t you ? It is not that UGA is so great, but that you have NEVER beat ANY impressive football team, EVER.

2. # 5 Offense # 15 Defense. Dogcrud. This is an NCAA stat Boise State runs up based on the 10 of the 12 regular season games for 2011 Rivals ranks the # 81 team. Yeah, you can run up stats like that against 10 teams in games you play this year against the # 81 team; but, what does it mean ? You play TCU and UGA this season; let’s see where you would rank in NCAA Offense and Defense looking at just those 2 games, shall we sir ? I am not falling into to this trap that this is some great accolade you through upon us, sight unseen; when what it is really is more of the same ole BS from Boise State fans that you rank this or that in NCAA stats with your 2-star players playing the # 81 team every week all of 2011.

3. You have had a great time chatting with fans HERE yes on our blogs. You have on the other than OBNUG blog as your only blog and allow NO DISCUSSION. It is why when you do go to real football blogs, that you are “ignorant sluts” to quote another blog author this morning. I came to your blog OBNUG and dared to post about your AD being fired the day he was fired by your president, but I was told I was h-jacking your blog about player # 24. Grow up Boise State fans. Your won/lost record MEANS NOTHING. Try playing a real schedule. And, don’t give me this, you really enjoy chatting online with yet another school who has NO RESPECT for your level of opponent every week, which would include 23 of the 31 opponents who are in the 6 BCS Conferences you have LOST to. Hi-jacking Nick’s OBNUG blog ? But, you can run in here and perpetrate this hoax again that UGA will be # 5 Offense # 15 Defense NCAA ranks (while you play the # 81 opponent every week running up those SAME ranks by the NCAA yourself. We play real football games, and guess what ? While we are the best opponent you play this season, we are # 7 in The SEC, and we didn’t even want to play you because (1) there is nothing to gain by beating you and (2) the game the next week, is the game we will be looking forward to.

Go back to your OBNUG “blog” and tell each other again where you rank in NCAA stats. Otherwise, tell Nick hi

I am enjoying the Gator-flavored Kool-Aid, as are Dawg fans enjoying their flavor. That is what we do in the summer. The difference is, Gator fans generally have reason to continue to drink the Kool-Aid during the fall months….at least 18 of the last 21 years.

Dawgirl……

Based on what I have been reading this summer, it is the Dawgs who don’t have to play any games this fall to win the East, the SEC, and the National Title. It is already a done deal, as it has been for the last 21 years during the summer. But, unfortunately, you do have to play Boise and SC the first two games. And Florida has to play Bama and LSU back to back. No, I have no dreams of winning the national title this year. But Georgia fans think they have that chance. Dream on. That is was summer is for for both Georgia and Florida fans. But the real Kool-Aid is being consumed at Bama and LSU this summer.

@TampaGator while you do have talent on the DL (they had a lot of stars when they signed) they haven’t done it on the field yet and they are in the first year of a new system. I think yall will end up 8-4 but to say you are better than us at 9 out of 11 positions on defense is a far reach from reality. And don’t even get me started on offense I like the Charlie Weis hire but I don’t even think he can fix JB and it is tough to win in the SEC with a FR at QB just MHO

I was on the day after the last Georgia win and raved about the running of Mareno in that game and wondered why Georgia does not use that scheme more when playing the Gators, If Georgia wins….and that is a big if…..they will be the better team this year and Georgia fans will have bragging rights for the 5th time in 22 years (as they did a few years back). Of course, Georgia still has the overall bragging rights (up to the 1980s), of which I am regularly reminded.

Just a fan……..

Sharief Floyd, Dominque Easley, and Ronald Powell played last year. Floyd played back up all year and came on strong towards the end of the year and was dominate in the Penn State game…..and he has had a terriffic spring and summer so far. He is going to be a force in the SEC this year. Easley had a rough year (attitude) last year but played very well in the Penn State game and he is a completely different person now…..great effort and Muschamp is saying he is 100 percent effort 100 percent of the time now….and that Easley has the quickest first step he has ever seen in a defensive lineman….and Muschamp has coached a lot of excellent DL at Auburn, Bama, and Texas. Ronald Powell (as your converted safety will most likely discover) went through a learning curve at LB last year playing in the SEC, but learned a lot and has been very impressive this spring and summer. He is bigger, faster, smarter, and playing a more natural postion…..and will be a star at the hybrid LB/DE position this year. Concerning the new system and learning it, that system will be far more aggressive this year…..Florida is running a similar defense to the one Bama runs….and the Florida players have already said it better fits what they do best. The DC last year was a bend but do not break guy. Not Muschamp and crew. They are out to bend your offensive line and break the QB’s mind by confusing the offense with many different looks and blitzes from all different directions. It is also very, very fast….as you will soon see.

And….as I wrote…..if I am wrong about my evaluation. Tell me why. Georgia has the lead at QB and on special teams only. A few ties, but Florida is stronger in more areas. If Brantley plays up to his skills, then Florida will win 9 or 10 games (with likely losses only Bama, LSU….and possible losses to FSU and Georgia). If Brantley plays like last year, Florida will win only 6 or 7 games. It is that simple.

“I will not predict the outcome of a game (unless I’m in Vegas and can bet on the game). What will be interesting to see is if you are still blogging after the GA/Fl game if we happen to win.”

1. It seems you are predicting, if you are projecting what will happen after the game if you happen to win.

2. I will be more than happy to bet with you on the outcome of this season. Consider this Las Vegas. It is a blog. Whether you like it or not, you are nothing but a wimp saying you don’t predict the games, then say you do predict the games in Las Vegas and then say you do wonder what will happen after the Florida game if we win.

Grow up. At least act like you are on a blog. A blog is where you come in here and say what will be. Then, you come back and eat your words.

Take me for example, I have been saying since the 2005 season was over that we have serious coaching staff issues.

Take you for example. Wonder what you will say after we play a Florida team whom we should have beat many times these last 10 years. Last year, for example. Was Florida any good last season ? Obviously not. But, they beat us. Didn’t they ?

Pre-season DISNEYdawgs.com like yourself, LHarding Dawg, come into these blogs EVERY SINGLE YEAR, and say the same BS, that we are better talent than Florida this season, and then we go out there and you don’t want to even hear what happened. 16 times under Mark Richt we have lost to a team who either did not end up in the AP Poll Top 25, or would not have, without their win over us.

LHarding Dawg, you don’t fool me. I know you think we have more talent than Florida. That’s a prediction. Yours does stink too. Oh, sorry, I forgot, I wasn’t supposed to come in here and talk about college football, just do like you do and put other posters down and say you do, no you don’t, yes you do, no you don’t, yes you do make predictions

@ TampaGator as far as the offense goes we are both thin on the OL but we have the better starters IMHO. I think for now you have better depth and experience at RB( my personal opinion Demps should have stuck with track better future in it for him), we have the edge at TE by a wide margin and we are even at the WR position and we have the edge at QB. On the defensive side of the ball you will see better play from both Jones and Tyson since they were playing at NT last and given the fact that we didn’t have a true NT last year and we do this year helps immensely. The LB position to me is even Jarvis Jones will be a beast for us as will Tree but we are thin and young at the position but I think Jelani Jenkins is going to be a great player for yall. As far as the DB’s go we have depth and the experience edge on you also it is a lot different playing back their when you have someone as talented as Janoris Jenkins was he took away half the field. Again all this is my opinion and again I am a Gator Hater and Bulldog for life so Goooooooo Dawgs and see you at the WLOCP.

Jenkins needs to be ready to spell Geathers a few times in the game. I think Geathers is going to be hard to move from first team, as he has a chip on his shoulder about all of the Jenkins hype, and he will show why he deserves to be on the field. I think the Boise QB, will become very familiar with him by games end. I would hate to be the center that will face this monster the whole game.
UGA should be the under DAWG in this first game match up, since they are young and are filling up some key positions however, if the defense plays like they are capable of doing, I think they win against Boise. The S.C. game is a hard nut to crack though, since they are talented all around, but the key will still be the defensive play of UGA. Stop Lattimore, and you make Garcia have to win the game, and if he has happy feet, it is a coin toss, just like his passes.
I reade the Schultz piece in the AJC, and I really think the man is on drugs. All he is really doing, if you look closely at his article, is basing this season off of last season. Chip should have written that article, as he is years ahead of Schultz in knowledge of UGA football. I think UGA will win 9 or 10 games this year and will get a lot of experience for the coming season for their young players. I think it is really a stretch to predict UGA wins the SEC title and goes undefeated. I hope with a few breaks, that UGA wins maybe the SEC East, but that is as much up in the air as anything.
I just want to see a solid effort for 60 minutes from the DAWGS and a good solid game plan each game, and I think UGA will surprise a few people.

I’m a long time fan and a grad of UGA, but I still can’t convince myself we’ll whip BS. Yeah, the Dawgs are big, bad, and fast, but they were those same things last year. Those are the kinds of players we recruit every year. No doubt we’ll GATA and show them some real athleticism, but I don’t see us executing well enough or consistently enough to beat a top ten team. Our QB’s good, but has never beaten a ranked team. The OL is troublesome at best. The running game is a wish. The defense has athletes, but hasn’t shown they can actually play defense. Too much is unproven. This team will be better than last year’s and will have the record to prove it. But they’ve got a way to go before they’ll start beating ranked teams. Having said all that, I’m pulling for the upset!
