Aaron Murray to Isaiah Crowell: Don’t worry, I’ve got your back

In case you missed it, here is my practice report from Friday . . .

ATHENS – Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray said freshman tailback Isaiah Crowell need not worry about forgetting an assignment when the Bulldogs face No. 5 Boise State next Saturday. If Crowell is not sure what to do, all he has to do is ask.

“Especially in the first few games,” Murray said this week. “Those are going to be like home games for us, without a bunch of crowd noise. So we should be able to communicate a lot and I think that’s going to help with him getting his feet wet. I told him, ‘I’m right there with you. No matter what, you just look at me.’ I’m right beside him most of the time anyway or he’s right behind me.”

That said, Murray added that he doesn’t believe Crowell is going to need much assistance. Not from what he has seen in practices the last month.

“Isaiah’s looking great right now,” Murray said. “He’s working. He’s going a great job studying playbook and watching film. He’s meeting with [running backs coach Bryan] McClendon. And he’s looks good out there on the field in practice. He’s confident, he’s making some unbelievable cuts, he’s catching the ball nicely. I’m excited about seeing what he can do in that first game.”

Murray said it’s important for fans to realize that Crowell won’t be perfect in the early going and maybe not ever. But he says he can assure that the five-star prospect from Columbus is as good advertised.

“There are tons of guys who came in with all this hype that are, quote-unquote, busts,” he said. “But the way Isaiah has been working and studying his plays and everything, he looks great right now. I know it’s different when you get in there and there are TV cameras and 70 to 90,000 people yelling. But as of right now everybody on the team is excited about seeing what he can do.”

Long road to Atlanta

Max Corbet has been Boise State’s assistant athletic director for media relations for 25 years. In that time he has seen the Broncos’ football program rise from WAC also-ran to the most feared BCS-buster in the land.

He has also logged thousands of miles as the team crisscrossed the nation for football games. He recently talked to the AJC’s Doug Roberson about the logistical hurdles the Broncos will face in coming to Atlanta to play Georgia.

“It’s a long road trip but no different than the Virginia Tech game last year, which worked well for us,” Corbet said of that 33-30 victory. “Hopefully it will be the same this time.”

Corbet said Boise will go to Michigan State next year and Washington in 2013. ESPN is brokering those games just as it did the one Saturday against Georgia.

As for facing the Bulldogs in the Georgia Dome, he said it’s not ideal for the Broncos. “We are really in their backyard,” Corbet said. “It’s just one of those things. It’s not in Athens but it might as well be. Last year, eighty percent or more of the stadium was Virginia Tech people. That’s part of it. We don’t sit around and fret about it. We prepare for it.”

Corbet said Boise State will be arriving in Atlanta on Thursday.

At home in Dome

The Bulldogs bussed to Atlanta Friday in order to hold a closed practice at the Georgia Dome. The “dress rehearsal” practice even included the Bulldogs wearing their Nike Pro Combat uniforms, according to a tweet from quarterback Aaron Murray.

Head coach Mark Richt was extremely secretive about the practice but athletic director Greg McGarity was not sure why.

“Mark just asked me if they could do it and I said yes, of course,” McGarity said. “The Falcons are in there Thursday and Georgia State plays there Friday, so I think it was the only day we could get in there.”

Etc. . . .

Cornerback Branden Smith was spotted on campus Friday in a walking cast, or “boot.” UGA Sports Communications director Claude Felton said there would be no update provided Friday on Smith. . . . Georgia will work out again Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m. . . . Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said he expects nose guard John Jenkins (hamstring) to return to practice Saturday.

“seen the Boise State Broncos’ football program rise from WAC also-ran to the most feared BCS-buster in the land.”

I love all these writers who hate the BCS so much, that they root for a football program averaging # 69 in the national Scout.com recruiting rankings all 5 of the last 5 years with a grand total of 8 wins in 31 games vs the 6 BCS Conferences, calling them now the most feared BCS-buster in the land when in fact they play according to Rivals, the average # 81 opponent all regular season long 2011 except for TCU and UGA. Oh, but their won/lost record is 12-1 or 14-0. Yeah, your lousy Boise State team was 12-1 the year before you came here last time and 14-0 the year after. Yet, with that same exact team with the same exact quarterback both of those 12-1 and 14-0 years, came here and was blistered with a 5-Touchdown UGA beat-down of mighty BCS-buster Boise State. Did you ask the Boise State AD spokesman, Chip Towers, about their NCAA PROBATION ? Consider asking them the tough follow-up question such Virginia Tech lost by MORE points than to Boise State the very next week to James Madison a division II club, so do you expect to see UGA lose to Coastal Carolina after you say Boise State will beat UGA ? Or, did you consider, Chip Towers, asking him about their Offensive Coordinator who left Boise State to go be Offensive Coordinator for BCS Texas of the Big XII while his back-up Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Football Coach left to be Offensive Coordinator for BCS Indiana of the Big 10 ?

Thomas Brown

Then, Brent Pease left Indiana a few days later to go to Boise State as Offensive Coordinator for vacated Offensive Coordinator Bryan Harsin, who left Boise State to be Offensive Coordinator for Mack Brown at Texas and call their Offensive Plays and train their Quarterbacks.

We get all this hype from the media, with none of the research behind the hype to validate the hype. I also would like to thank

Diehard Dawg at 10:20 pm last night on this blog for his seriously funny YouTube video of Boise State, with the only criticism of that video that it does not say 1 word about the only 8 wins in 31 games Boise State has amassed as the “most feared BCS-buster” vs the 6 BCS Conferences including never beating The SEC, ever :

I would like to do a little more analysis of these 34 Losses above in the Mark Richt era. 12, a clean dozen, are blow-out Losses in the 1st 10 years.

12 is also the number of games played vs teams who did finish in the AP Poll Top 10. We beat 3 of the 12. Of the 3 wins over first # 4 vols 2001, we lost 4 games in 2001 – hardly knocking any lid off this # 11 all-time program in 1-A wins; and included the same year we beat # 4 vols Hobnail Boot Losses to such teams as 7-5 Auburn unranked in the Final Polls and to 8-4 Boston College who was not ranked prior to the bowl game and would not have ended up ranked had we not lost to them. The second win vs a team finishing AP Poll Top 10 was 2005 over # 6 LSU in the SEC Championship game; however in 2005 we not only Lost 3 games, but in fact ended up not the best team in The SEC but # 3 in The SEC in the Final AP Poll with Alabama and LSU both ranked ahead of UGA. The third, and notably the last win over a team finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 was 2006 beating # 9 Final AP Poll Auburn; and is our way in years actually beating a Top 10 Final AP Poll team, we Lost 4 games in 2006 too including Blow-Out Loss to a vols team who ended up # 25 and therefore would not have been ranked either without their win over us, including Loss to a Kentucky team who did not end up in the AP Poll Top 25 even with their win over Mark Richt, and of course the just wonderful Loss to a team who with the win over Mark Richt won a grand total of 4 games Vandie.

Further analysis of the 34 Losses in 10 years :

3.4 Losses per season – Richt-0-Files talk about wins in 14 games nowadays never losses

18 points per game scored by the offense and a great number of those points by Defense and by Special Teams.

16 of the 34 Losses are to FAR LESSER TEAMS than we handed Mark Richt’s “coaching staff” none of the 16 of whom would have finished Top 25 without their win over us that season, and 10 of whom still did not end up Top 25 even with their win over us.

When Mark Richt got here, The SEC was DOWN.
If we are The Best team in SEC 2005, why did we finish # 3 best SEC Top 25 ?
If SEC was not DOWN in 2002, why only 1 other # 14 Auburn in Coaches’ Poll Top 25 ?
If Mark Richt was screwed by BCS in 2007, why no win us over team finished Top 10, while LSU has two (2) wins 2007 over teams who finished AP Poll Top 10 ?
If Mark Richt so screwed by BCS 2007, why did we lose to 6-6 South Carolina who did not even play in a bowl game 2007 ?
If Mark Richt so screwed by BCS in 2002, why did we go 0-11 on 3rd Down Conversions 2002 vs a Florida team who did not even end up in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 at 8-5 who then fired their Ron Zook coach ?

No, I think I am fine not being forced to root for just the Badminton team at UGA. I believe it is the DISNEYdawgs.com, who are responsible for SETTLING * for this as something great when it clearly is mediocre.

Right ?

We have not beat the top teams and we have lost to lousy teams all 10 years.

I absolutely love how UGA fans (not unlike Oklahoma fans, Virginia Tech fans, TCU fans, Utah fans, etc.)constantly bash the Broncos record against BCS teams. But, in recent years, once BSU’s program flourished, that record has been fairly good against BCS opponents. And, most of those games on the road or at “neutral” sites, like the one UGA runs practices at the week before the game.

Please…UGA may have wins over SEC teams and BCS programs, but they play them frequently – they have as many losses and wins over those programs. And, UGA hasn’t beaten a legitimate NC contender or BCS bowl contender in how long?

When you start beating the basement of the SEC or the UCF’s of the world, let us know.

By the way, don’t get down, you can still win the SEC after starting off 0-1 to the Broncos!

And, nice uni’s UGA – love that RED and SILVER!

8-23 vs every BCS team Boise State has ever played

Georgia, # 11 all-time in 1-A wins is not, sir, 8-23 vs the 6 BCS Conferences as you are, sir.

You, sir, can sit there and type the 8 wins in a sentence as many times as you so desire. You played 31 games; try typing all 31 games in a sentence and see how impressive only 8 wins in 31 games in fact, is, sir.

“UGA hasn’t beaten a legitimate NC contender in how long?”

11-3 Choke-la-homa 2007 now is some great NC contender Boise State beat ?

11-3 Virginia Tech 2010 now is some great NC contender Boise State beat # 16 AP Poll ?

5-7 Oregon State 2010 now is some great NC contender Boise State beat ?

10-3 Oregon 2009 now is some great NC contender Boise State beat ?

10-3 Oregon 2008 now is some great NC contender Boise State beat ?

10-4 Oregon State 2006 now is some great NC contender Boise State beat # 21 AP Poll ?

7-5 Oregon State 2004 now is some great NC contender Boise State beat ?

5-6 Oregon State 2005 now is some great NC contender Boise State beat ?

Go ahead BSUWhiteHorse, tell me please which of these 8 wins in 31 games vs the 6 BCS Conferences, are really in your mind wins over some great NC contender ?

Should I sit here and wait for that answer in our blogs while your One Nation Under God Boise State blog narrator Nick would consider YOUR POST HERE a hijacking of our blog about Aaron Murray and Isaiah Crowell today because he is AFRAID of me replying to your BS about Boise State beating all these great NC contenders.

Please come back anytime. We are not afraid of whatever lie you come up with next to explain how Rivals is so wrong to rank your regular season 2011 schedule the # 81 opponent in the nation of 120 Division 1 FBS teams for 10 of your regular season 2011 games except TCU and UGA while you lost your Offensive Coordinator to BCS Texas and Mack Brown.

Whatever lie you come up with next to try to say how wrong Scout.com is to rank your recruiting classes the average # 69 the last 5 years, with your grand total of 15 NFL players.

Whatever lie you come up with next to try to explain away how you have 0 Top 100 players the last 5 years of Scout.com to our 21 when we have 45 NFL players as a direct result playing BCS teams every week and having injuries as a result.

Whatever lie you come up with next to try to explain away how you have 1 either 5-Star or 4-Star recruit playing us a week from today over the last 5 years of Scout.com rankings of your 2-Star players to our 51.

I mean if all those folks are ALL WRONG – the NFL, Rivals, and Scout.com, then why have you won only these miserable 8 wins in 31 games against the 6 BCS Conferences you instead try to paint as legitimate NC contenders ?

Good article, Chip.

It sounds like Aaron Murphy is solid in his quarterback leadership role, that Isaiah is ready for his transition to an SEC tailback position, and that hopefully John Jenkins is healthy enough to be able to rotate with Kwame Geathers at nose when he needs a breather.

I just hope all our players can get healed and healthy and gameday-ready, and play for four complete quarters. I feel that the desire, focus, and intensity is there.

I just hope they can transition it to the field. Do that, and I expect to see a well-played game, and most likely, a Georgia win. .. Go Dawgs!

Uh, no.

“I agree with the previous poster that Mark Richt’s team is better than he’s letting on. Only time will tell, but I think that he knows that he has something special this season.”

(1) How great is our “special” team when the answer is a Dream Team ranked # 6 by Scout.com and # 6 by ESPN, when all of those players have been injured ALL FALL CAMP and unable to play any down to learn any of their positions ?

(2) How great is our “special” team when the season is over given that we have 10 CUPCAKES we play 2011 ? What if we go 11-3 against that schedule ? Will we have beat any one at all sir ?

(3) How improved will we have been this season, when it is over, if all we do is show up against Alabama in The SEC Championship game to get CLOCKED by them ? That would be the only possible team on our schedule who will finish in the AP Poll Top 25 and we have won only 3 of those type games of the 12 we have played to-date in the Mark Richt era. Will 11-3 then include yet another loss, as we average every single year all 10 years too, against a team who finishes this season not ranked in the Top 25 ?

(4) Who is our fullback ? 6 recruiting classes in a row, when there are over 200 FB every year, we did not recruit a FB until now for 2012, one, finally.

(5) Who is our tailback ? How many fumbles will we have this season ? The 30 I guarantee, today, sir ? 30 times putting the ball on the carpet for a team that never has taught a RB how to hold the football, will not this season either, and who has not taught any one on our offense how to fall on a fumble either. These are not inherited traits. These are both learned skills.

(6) If our QB is the best QB in the nation, and David Greene the best ever in the history of college football, why did David Greene throw only wounded ducks and won the most games, yet our QB was # 72 in the nation at both making a 1st Down and at being sacked, with his 19 TD vs 8 cupcakes with a losing record none of whom were ranked (and lost 2 of those) and 0-5 vs the 5 teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 25 teams with only then 5 TD passes vs all 5 of them ?

(7) Who is our WR ?

(8) Who do we have in our secondary who has ever stopped the forward pass, one time ?

(9) If our coach is the best college coach ever, why is he 3-9 vs teams finishing in the Top 10 and have another 16 losses to teams who either did not finish in the Top 25 or would not have without their victory over Mark Richt ?

(10) With the 2 holes on the OL and some would argue 3 holes on the OL starting 5, and no one behind them, who is supposed to block for the run or the pass ?

(11) If Mike Bobo is such a great OC, why does NO ONE want him ?

(12) If we are so much better with Mark Richt’s “coaching staff” than anything anywhere, why are we # 23 in won/loss these last 5 years ?

(13) If we are going to win The SEC East this season, why in the previous 5 years, 6 that night, if we don’t beat South Carolina game 2, is Mark Richt going to have then that night a LOSING RECORD to the entire SEC East then over the 6-Year period ?

(14) Pardon me, if I believe it when I see it and not against 10 cupcakes going 11-3 is seeing it.

CALL ME FROM MISSOURI.

Dawg_Mike,

I am with you on that. We have nothing but questions about our OL, and the answers are not good. We have no one practicing at TB or FB, all injured or pulled hamstrings; and none of them have played the position except 1 guy who all he does is fumble and he has not been practicing either having been dispatched to the defense for the last 2 years, and now can’t go.

Who has little Aaron Murray’s back ?

Like you say.

And, moreover, with our pass-happy offense, and no running game and no one practicing at running and us throwing Six (6) Interceptions in ONE-HALF of a game with running backs including walk-ons all getting 5 yards a carry against all our so improved defense, why does Aaron Murray have to have Crowell’s back ?

I’ve never heard of that.

A QB has a TB’s back who (1) is the # 221 fastest player in the 2011 recruiting class (2) never has been the go-to back anywhere ever (3) has been totally unable to go in practice all Fall Camp, but most assuredly showed up here with some attitudes – including but not limited to insisting on # 1 when we have a # 1 already, a proven player wearing # 1 who is not about to give that up to some upstart ?

Why would little Aaron Murray have to have Crowell’s back ?

No you won’t Bluenorange51. You said the same exact statements here the last time you came running into these blogs only to lose by 5 TDs to us, a season which found us finishing the # 3 ranked team in The SEC that year in the AP Poll. A season in which we lost 3 games.

I was against this Boise game from the get go. I respect their team, fans, and coaching staff… I just think that there is not much in it for UGA. If we do manage a win… I guaranteed these message boards will be filled with bashers stating that Boise is overated and of course we should beat them in a virtual home game with our 4 and 5 star athletes against their 2 and 3 star athletes. They will say, let us know when you beat a Texas, Ohio State, or Florida.

Lose the game, which is a real possbility, given that they win a lot of games and are very well coached (and who knows what can happen in a season opener!) and the pressure for the South Carolina game the next week will be enormous. Richt and staff would literally be coaching for their jobs as I don’t think this program can survive an 0-2 start.

Dawg fans are excited now, but believe me it would turn ugly in here if we lose the first 2.

That being said, I like what I am hearing about the performance of several key players and I think our defense is going to be significantly improved. I like our chances this Saturday in the dome.

Sweet Home Alabama,

You do know that conference games (that’s what the SEC is), are scheduled by the conference officials, not the individual schools. Hint, that’s why they call them conference games. I am not sure what technique they use to arrive at the schedule, but such is the draw of the cards.

OK Thomas, I will bite. How relevant to the 2011 UGA team is a win over Auburn in 1903? ZERO relevance! The 2011 BSU team has NEVER lost to a BCS auto- qualifying team. The teams play who is on the schedule and they beat who they play. I believe they will beat UGA because they play disciplined team football, they have a senior QB, and they are well coached. When that happens, you will want to fire CMR. Something else to consider – you should look forward to the loss – because it means good things are coming. Losing to BSU has been the pleasure of the conference champs – Oklahoma, oregon, virg tech, TCU. Lose to us. – go on to win the sec east. Your games are all easier after the first one.

Doesn’t sound like Jenkins came to Athens in shape and ready to play. Good thing that Gaethers has reaaly stepped up since last year. Of course, Nick Fairley didn’t do anything his first year at Auburn and then totally dominated his second year.

Playing a game in the Dome is 50% better on big men like Jenkins and Kwame. They do not feel the HUMIDITY like they feel when outside. THIS will give him a game to find out what Big Boy Ball really is. Besides, they will rotate these two and the other big NG man during the game.

One thought ………………….two opening losses DO NOT ruin the entire year IF UGA can hang on in the rest of the SEC and compete all year for that East Championship. Now, this scenario means that SC minimally would have to suffer maybe THREE losses in the SEC for UGA to have that shot for the East, given Head to Head competion. It also means that UGA would need to handle Florida and UT and MSU and Ole Miss and KY and Vandy, AU but that can be done.

Stranger things happen during the course of one year. We a re basically a new team of skill frosh and sophs. They may need some game time under their belts before they hit their stride.

I am pumped.

Go Dogs.

Get ready for a special year, dawg fans. Greg McGarity will be a big part of the turnaround for the dawgs. CMR is focused on football again instead of doing Damon Evans’ job.

“It also means that UGA would need to handle Florida and UT and MSU and Ole Miss and KY and Vandy, AU but that can be done.”

That’s a pretty bold statement considering that UGA has not beaten UF and UT in the same year since Richt has been there. His woes against UF are no secret and he hasn’t faired well in Knoxville.

Atta boy to Murray! He is really proving to be a leader, which he should be as the QB. Last year, #11 was the only one in my opinion that cared if we won or lost.

I hope Crowell plays like a champ! I’d love to see him toting that rock against the Broncos. We’ve got to beat Boise in our backyard!

Thomas , you put such effort but only focus on the negative aspects of Richts tenure. Just for example you mention the blow out losses to LSU but don’t mention the 3 blowout victories.over LSU, 2004 45-16 over Saban coached tigers, 2005 35-14 in SEC championship game, 2008 in Baton rouge 52-38.

Sorry Dawgs, I must have missed it, did Crowell really yell at his offensive line (as in being an energy vampire)? Thanks

D-MAN, I did watch the BS – VT game (2010) yesterday. It was sheer torture. BS did have a pretty good defense for the first half but the humidity got to them. In the Dome it won’t matter. At the end of the game Moor did manage to score and win the game for them but I still wasn’t that impressed.

Wow, what’s wrong with Branden Smith??? If he can’t go next week that would be a blow! Any updates on this injury?

There’s nothing wrong with Branden Smith. Just a precautionary measure. He’ll be good to go next week.
