Practice report: Boise State’s Tommy Smith will feel at home in the Dome
ATHENS – Everybody in Boise, Idaho, is excited about playing Georgia in the Georgia Dome on Sept. 3, but no one is more excited than Tommy Smith.
Smith
Smith is a junior inside linebacker for the Broncos and, thanks to quarterback Michael Tamburo’s transfer to UGA, the only Boise State player from Atlanta, or Georgia, for that matter. As such, he has been the No. 1 thorn-in-the-side of his teammates the past few weeks.
Players get just two tickets apiece for away games. Smith said he needs 27 — at least.
“I’ve got 17 right now,” Smith said in a telephone interview this week. “I thought this would be an easy game to get tickets for but it’s been pretty hard. Hopefully I can get 10 more.”
It’s a problem Smith is happy to have. Playing Georgia in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game – playing Georgia anywhere, in fact — is something Smith never dreamed of when he signed with the Broncos out of North Atlanta High.
“Definitely not in the Georgia Dome,” Smith said. “I’m really excited about getting back home and playing in the Georgia Dome in front of my friends and family. I found out when it was released to the newspaper. I started thinking then about how many tickets I could get.”
Smith said he and his family used to attend Atlanta Falcons’ games regularly at the Dome. But he’s never had the pleasure of playing in it. His North Atlanta teams never made it that far in the high school playoffs.
Smith is currently a backup linebacker to Byron Hout, a senior who’s best known for being knocked out by Oregon’s LaGarrett Blount in 2009. Smith plays regularly, though, and filled in last season when Hout was out with a broken foot. He has had 49 tackles the last two seasons and was named to the All-WAC academic team both years.
So how did this Atlantan end up all the way out in Boise?
“It was all about how recruiting played out,” said Smith, a two-star rated recruit. “I wasn’t that highly recruited out of high school. I had a couple of offers but nothing major. Somehow I found myself all the way out Boise on a recruiting visit and I liked it. It was in the winter, like a couple of days before the Super Bowl. There was snow everywhere. I thought it was pretty cool.”
Tailback talk
There were conflicting reports after practice Thursday as to how much tailback Richard Samuel was able to participate. Running backs coach Bryan McClendon said the big junior was able to do everything, including 11-on-11 work. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo insisted he did not have Samuel for 11-on-11.
Suffice it to say, Samuel is back and is involved in preparations for the Boise State game. The 6-2, 238-pound running back has been out for nearly two weeks with a strained quadriceps.
Nevertheless, McClendon indicated that, barring further injury setbacks, Samuel will likely be the starter against Boise State.
“If they’re healthy it’d be Richard and Isaiah right now,” he said when asked the order of appearance. But he said Crowell will play a significant role against Boise State and may eventually start this season.
“You definitely want to see him just keep improving,” McClendon said. “He’s put himself in great position to get a lot of work in that first ballgame. He’s a guy we’re going to have to depend on a lot.
McClendon also listed Brandon Harton ahead of Ken Malcome for the third and fourth spots.
Injury report
Asked to comment on the play of nose guard John Jenkins, defensive line coach Rodney Garner groused. “If you want to know about him you have to ask Ron Courson,” he said.
Courson is, of course, Georgia’s director of sports medicine. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Jenkins remains in Courson’s charge. He has now been out a week with a pulled hamstring.
Harton was also out Thursday with an undisclosed leg injury suffered in Wednesday’s scrimmage. McClendon indicated it was not serious. Fullback Bruce Figgins (hamstring) and wide receivers Marlon Brown (ankle) and Malcolm Mitchell (hamstring) also sat out.

Georgia practiced for 90 minutes Thursday in a workout that focused mainly on special teams. . . Offensive line coach Will Friend said sophomore Dallas Lee will be the “first guy in” off the bench for the Bulldogs at either guard position or center. He’d be followed by David Andrews, then Austin Long. However, Kenarious Gates would shift from guard to either left or right tackle if one has to come out of the game. Lee would actually be . . . Outside linebacker Ray Drew has recovered enough from the separated shoulder he suffered in a scooter crash to be counted on to play against Boise State. “He’ll play and he’ll give us some depth,” defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said. “I think he’ll be a guy that will continue to rise as the season goes.” . . . Safety Corey Moore and cornerback Damian Swann are freshmen currently playing on the second-team defense.

Crowell fitting in? Calhoun folks said he was yelling at teammates and fans during Carver’s loss to them last year. Dell McGee said he needed to mature. Strange that he was all but named the starter, then after two scrimmages, neither of which Samuel participated in, samuel is named starter. IC needs to take his offensive line out to dinner, not btch at ‘em.

Jenkins needs to get his act together. All that size with nothing to show for it. He better be ready to play by next Saturday because Geathers won’t be able to last all game by himself. We need to keep that nose guard fresh. Hope Jenkins is ready and everybody else that’s “injured.” “Oh I stubbed my toe.” For goodness sakes boys this is football. Football is getting soft these days. Back in the day people would break fingers and play in the same game. These guys need to get tough and play through some injuries.

Terrible offensive line depth. Richt/Bobo don’t see the train coming till it hits ‘em. It’s left the program extremely limited as to how much work can be done from a physical standpoint. A program of Georgia’s status should never have been put in this position. Those two, and their lack of foresight, are the real energy vampires.

I’m just tired of reading practice reports, tired of hearing the “experts’” opinions on how people will do. How Alabama is a lock to win the NC even though they have a new QB, lost Ingram, lost Jones, lost Dareus, etc. I’m just sick of it all. I want some action and I want it now. T roll, IC is competitive–hates losing. Many great athletes have to mature in that area, but most of the great ones have that fire in their belly. Agree that yelling at the line usually isn’t a good idea for a TB. JJ may take a while to learn the system, folks. His coach said he was very good. Give it time.

I really wish Richt would commit to running Samuel 25 times next weekend. We seriously out man them in terms of size, and the Ga Dome is going to be hot. We average 315 upfront, have a 260lb fullback and a 240lb tailback that runs a 4.5. If we can hold the ball and keep their offense off of the field we have a legitimate shot at winning. But alas…we all know that won’t happen.

Hm. So many Boise State haters on here. I will be back on this page come 8 days from now with one of two scenarios. One, praising Georgia for a great game and admitting that 5 Star recruits, gobs of money, performance enhancing drugs and physically (but not academically) gifted athletes DO really make a succesfull team. Or two, that great coaching, excellent team focus and work ethic, high personal and moral standards, squeazing tons of talent from 2 and 3 Star recruits as well as all around gifted athletes can be just as competitive as any SEC rival. You are right all BUT named the starter. It has been said all along that Samuel is #1 and start opening day as of every day before today. Crowell would only be the starter if Samuel is out and that is because Samuel is WAY ahead of Crowell in experience and knowing what to do and when to do it. Even Herschel did not start or play this early and UGA did not hardly ever pass back then so not much to know as far as pass blocking. So maybe Crowell and most every guy on the team needs to grow up some. Maybe Crowell is doing just fine and you are starting rumors and spreading negativity with no basic in facts but instead is only from your little trouble-making mind. Crowell has never been number one and while he has made strides, he never will be number one without learning most ALL he has to do and EARNING IT IN A GAME, unless there is an injury. They come to Boise State and lose ticket sales because our stadium is a LOT smaller. They lose the chance to hit a BCS game. All losses of potential pride and money. Spud, your QB was a Heisman finalist, you have several top draftees, and the seniors are 38-2. You really won’t be defined by this game…granted, it is a big one for both programs. Your problem is that the Dawgs were 6-7 last year. If you win big, the press will say UGA is weak. If we win big, they will say it is just BSU. Same issue.

I don’t understand the Boise hype. I just don’t get it. They have a new OC, they lost Pettis and Young, the have a new punter and kicker, smallish O-line…good QB, not great, good. They’re RB is decent. They’re defense lost a lot of talent in the secondary. Wide receivers dropping balls. I just don’t see how they are going to physically line up and dominate us. To beat us, they’re going to have to dominate us and I just don’t see us letting that happen. To beat us will mean that Boise blocked Geathers and Jenkins sucessfully, they got after Murray and took him out of his game, they shut down Samuel & Crowell, they shut our receivers down, our O-line forgot how to block, etc. It would take a lot for Boise to beat us.

You get a good education and enjoy playing football and I wish you the best and I am glad you got to play ball at Boise St. But you and all your boys know that you are overmatched against a strong SEC team. It is early in the season so that could be to your advantage, especially early in the game. Could be a disadvantage too because Boise might be a little off also first game. But have no illusions because come the 2nd half, UGA will dominate the game on both sides of the ball and put 45 up on your defense. So do all your scoring early if you can because, come the 2nd half, it’s over. Too strong, too fast, too good and stronger than you are expecting. Go Dawgs.

Athens, looking at their stats they are great, and they have beaten some good teams. They are winners. The question is how good their stats would be if they played an SEC schedule. It will be interesting. Their TBs are very good. How the lines do against guys that are 50lbs bigger will be interesting.

Thing is, they all want to win. Each team. At this point in the season its who wants it more that may be the deciding factor. I am a little worried about Georgia coming off of a bad season last few years and needing to prove something. Also, sucks that its in the Dome. I just hope that each team can play well and that way we can find out if there really IS a vast difference between the conferences.

We all know what you want. Respect for your program by playing in the NC game. But the stars are never going to align for Boise until there are those Superconferences. It’s just plain disrespectful to the rest of college football who does bust their hump 6-7 games a year by making absurd claims. Toledo ain’t LSU! Sorry!! By the way, I hope we stomp you.

They’re uniforms are pretty cool. I really like their helmets. I like the all white. Anyways, I agree Idaho Potato that this game will come down to who wants it more. I think UGA would almost have to want it more right? Coming off a 6-7 season, your coach on the hot seat, the nation doubting you, etc. Wouldn’t you want to come out hot and beat your opponent.

The scouting services rate Boise State’s recruiting classes far down the list for 2009, 2010 and 2011. Georgia is in the upper echelon each of those years. How does Boise State manage to get a preseason ranking of #5 with such an apparent talent gap?

In essence, this is your biggest ‘bowl’ game yet. You be us and we don’ beat ourselves and, as soon as I return from Atlanta, I’ll be one of the first to congratulate you.
Just feel tha UGA just has too much to lose, and don’t expect a let down. Far from it. Boise State is a good team, I just feel that because of last year’s terrible outcomes, UGA wants it more, and will give you more than you could ever thought you’d see or play.
You are a telented football team; I’ll give you that, I just feel that we have the desire to win and win we will. Time will tell. Just hope both play their best with no injuries that will hurt us, UGA down the road, particularly against our conference foe, SC.
We haven’t proved we can play for four complete quarters, but I think this team will, and you will know that you have played a true SEC team.
UGA prevails, or I’ll congratulate you. Win, and I will only say best wishes for the rest of the season, and know that we truly have a chance in the SEC East this year. .. Go Dawgs!

I agree with the Superconference Idea and unfortunately every team cannot play every other team each year. I dont disagree that the SEC is the strongest conference…yet…I hope we stomp U! I know we wont get the respect we want, but any W in the column is a step toward that NC game we all want.

Well one thing I do know as a Dawg fan is that no matter who Boise Stae has lining up,when they step between the lines they will be well coached and well prepared. As we have unfortunately seen the past two years, that means something. We have all seen how Boise can game plan when they have the time off for BCS Bowl game – now they have had all summer. Make no mistake, who they play means nothing for this game because its the first game. I say walk a mile in a SEC team’s shoes for a season versus WAC or Mountain West to tell me how good you really are. BS doesn’t play in a conference that has 3 BCS teams and 6-7 bowl teams to knock everyone out…it’s apples and oranges. However, for the first game…both teams have had the same time to prepaare, no one is beat up, etc…who coaches up whom? Who plays football or who plays to their hype as these high star recruits? I remember Oklahoma State a few years ago…that was a defining game game for them…same with BS this year to propel the 2011 BS hype…on paper? Yes we should win. But will our staff rise up and beat BS coaching? I sure hope so. I’m postponing my 23rd anniversary trip to watch this game. Would hate to be disappointed…I don’t thinkI willl be. UGA is on The Energy Bus!!!

Well I hope they are better than previous years……….. to go 6-7 again after Boise beats them wouldn’t help our SOS.
But realistically, how can they not be better after last year and with this years schedule….. the SEC E. is weak. That’s why a 6-7 team is considered to be 2nd in SEc E.
I’d rather talk smack now so I can spend my time after the game watching it over again and other good games that will be on that weekend.

I’m hoping all the hype about the Dogs being better is true. I still have very vivid memories of not scoring a touchdown against Central Florida, losing to Mississippi State and looking pathetic doing it, and so on. Boise doesn’t have the size, true, but they are always ready to play and play with such heart and fire they can play with anyone. That is what was really missing from the Dawgs – passion and leadership. If we get that we should win going away, if we don’t it will be worse than Central Florida.

Sounds like the strain is starting to show on some of the coaches. Somebody doesn’t sound too happy about his material on the defensive line.
JUCOs are seldom ready or conditioned for for SEC level football regardless of the hype. It was always a huge gamble to stake the newfound unbreachable run defense on a JUCO.

Don’t believe for a moment that the Broncos haven’t figured a way to replace Pettis and Young. In the past they have thrown to receivers by committee–they will do the same again this year. For those who do not believe they have elite talent, just realize that this particular team will have 8 to 10 players on this particular team playing on Sunday in the next couple of years–including 3 of the 4 starters on the D line. The D line backups may be even better than this year’s starters next year.

I personally think BSU deserves all the credit they are getting. They play smart football and are brilliant in scheduling.
Look at this point in camp, 3 week or so it is bound to get a little sloppy. Players are tired of hitting each other, it has been blistering hot. This is nothing new I am sure all coaches have the same isses at this point. The issue is we are all way to close emotionally to the situation and wanna read inbetween every other word. Relax the game is getting close and alot of questions will soon be answered.

I think that Boise State’s strategy will be to out score us like they did Virginia Tech. I think we score 28 to 38 points which will be enough if Grantham’s defense can shut the passing game down. I think Boise State is hoping for a shoot out.

It’s time for the University of Georgia Bulldogs to step up. If we’re legit contenders for the SEC Championship, then we wax Boise – no question. If we’re going to struggle in the SEC, then Boise will beat us easily. I hate to say it, but the pressure is on the Dawgs to represent for the SEC on 9/3.
Basically the football game against Boise will tell us how the season will go. If Boise beats us handily, then hello, 6-7, hello Liberty Bowl. If we can hang, whether we win or lose, I think that we are looking at a winning season. If we win comfortably, then I expect to see us in the GA Dome again come December.
Boise is well coached and they know how to win. I mean, as much as any other SEC fan I wish that Boise would grow a pair and join a real conference. But you can only beat what’s put in front of you. I will very begrudgingly admit that they are better than the average college football fan gives them credit.
But come on. UGA has to beat Boise St. The rest of the season could be a nightmare but it wouldn’t matter as long as we demonstrate to the team that refuses/can’t get an invite to join a decent conference that the SEC is hands down, no questions asked, the best conference in college football.
On the other hand, LSU should feel tremendous pressure to beat Oregon, and they have their own demons at this point.

Clearly Boise State has a lot of supporters out there, otherwise they wouldn’t be a pre-season top five team with plenty of ESPNers, et. al., claiming that they could ‘go-all-the-way’. We, on the other hand, have a lot of question marks that just might not be answerable in the affirmative. So I guess this adds up to ‘gloom and doom in the dome’…on the other hand, this could very well be the first step toward a ‘Dome to Dome’ season that will have us building so many new cars for the ‘bandwagon’ train we might have to hire the techies to assemble ‘em – just hope they do a better job than they did on the 17th Street Bridge…maybe the fact that we let ‘em paint it ‘yaller’ should have told us something.
I’m looking forward to being able to bombard that jerk Cowherd (starting with the old story that ends with, ‘,,,whata I care what a cow heard, I don’t have any secrets from a cow?’) with who ya’ pickin’ to play in the NC game now ‘cow-heard’…and his buddy Ed Cunningham (I think that’s his name) who so cavalierly threw out on ‘cow-heards’ show that Georgia was ‘way overrated this season…no better than third in the SEC East’…and those two are just for starters.
One thing’s for sure, I can’t imagine what kind of grief we’re gonna be in for if those guys really are up to the task – the blu-smurfs that is…and don’t think that your wearing all-white will mean we won’t know who you are when we ask the final, ala John Russell, question of ‘hey, how you gonna get outa this Dome?’…and by the way, Pete, it’s ’stock’ not ’stalk’ – not that we intend to be the ones being laughed at, and Idaho Potato guy, it’s ’stake’ not ’steak’, but if you happen to have one (with your potatoes) at Bones while you’re here, don’t count on being able to buy a Varsity dog and Coke before the game.

That’s the reason I mentioned the Virginia Tech game. Their strategy was to out score Virginia Tech with a shoot out like you see in the Big -12 all the time. The SEC way is to out score your opponent with a low scoring ground game.16-10 and chew up the clock. We don’t need to get into a high scoring shoot out with one of the best and accurate passing Quarterbacks in the nation. Our strategy is to keep Boise State offense off the field and when they get on the field Grantham needs to shut them down. We have got to win TIME OF POSSESSION THIS YEAR. And when we take 6 minutes to score we can’t let them match our score in only 2 minutes.

I remember 2005–it was six years ago. I’m a UGA grad and an UGA fan for life, but we should look at how Boise State’s program has risen and how our program has fallen. I like Mark Richt and I’m sure he is a great person, but he is not taking this program where it needs to be.

With all the changes that have occurred in the last year I’m sure McGarity isn’t going to stop there if more changes are needed. We will know a lot more after the Tenn. game. Just have an open mind. We could play great and still lose the first two games. Boise State and South Carolina could both end up with no more than 1 or two losses. I hope we have enough to beat both of them but we definitely should beat most of the rest of the schedule and that is what will decide CMR’s fate.

The idea of a playoff sounds good, but I don’t think it would ever be practical if you had 4 super conferences. NCAA DIV. 1 football just has too many teams. It works in the NFL for two reasons. 32 teams and the fact that the teams and players make more money, the longer the season goes on. Sure the colleges would make more money, but if this happened, then college ball could forget about ever being anything else but the minor league of the NFL, not that it isn’t pretty close to that anyway. It is professional. I don’t think it is fair to have these kids play a 16 or 17 game season, as the controversy would still be there with some teams saying they were left out and deserved a chance and such. It would be a nightmare to have 35-40 teams in one conference and come up with a winer in a division.
I am not sure what the solution is, and I think the BCS format and rankings need a lot of twinking, but I don’t think a four conference NCAA div. playoff would be any better.

I watched the replay of Boise and Nevada and boys, I just don’t see it.
I know we blew grits last year but if we play like we did against Arkansas or Florida(even though we lost) we will whip Boise.
Pettus and Young WON that VT game and carried the load for Boise against Nevada too. They are in the NFL
Doug Martin is a quality back but if you can’t open your eyes and compare Nevada’s line of scrimmage to ours and not see a big difference, I can’t help you.

Lex, I agree. If you look at the size and speed of our team vs Boise, the pedigrees (Star ratings) of our recruits, it appears to be a romp. Coaching will come into play. Peterson wins look impressive, but look a little closer and you will see 90% against pretty much cupcakes. I do think it will be a tough game, bit I really do think we win. Went to hear McGarity, among others speak last night at the Augusta Bulldog club honoring sonny Siler. McGarity is pumped. He said he could SEE a big difference in this team, and the focus has been unreal, as 63 of 77 players on scholarship were in Athens all summer working out and in the weight room under the direction of Murray,Ben Jones and Orson. Not one player in trouble. Go Dawgs

I think the game will come down to, which team can implement their game plan best and impose their will on the other team. UGA is going to try and control the lines of scrimmage and play “Junkyard DAWG” football, and Boise is going to try and score and score more to keep UGA, in the catch up mode. If UGA’s defense can apply the pressure and control the line of scrimmage, then they have a great chance of winning. If Boise state can score on the UGA defense pretty easily, Boise walks away with the victory.
UGA’s offense will probably be a a little tentative, but if they can run the ball, and control the game a little, then UGA will be OK on that side of the ball.
If the UGA defense physically over powers the Boise offense, then UGA’s offense will get the ball in good field position a fair amount of times. I trhink UGA’s defense can physically wear down, Boise’s offense and make it a long, last 15 minutes. If Boise states quick defense over powers UGA’s offense, it is going to be a tough game to call.
There are a lot of if’s for both teams and it will be a good game.

RS only has to muster enough energy to carry the ball 15 times. He is not expected to be a Lattimore back, meaning 30-35 carries. IC should be getting the bulk of the carries after the first two games.

I think you have a number of about 35 runs that the carries will be split between IC/RS. Then you will have 3-4 carries between Harton/Malcome. So that puts the Runs at close to 40, then Pass plays at about 25 to get to total plays of about 65. Remember last year when AM threw over 30 times we were 0-3. Also the more pass plays the more of a track meet we “run” into. That is the recipe for disaster.

UGA is going to dominate Boise from start to finish. The Dome is going to be rockin’ in a sea of red and this UGA team is finally motivated I think to play good. If not this signals the end of the CMR era. The Lousville games were cancelled for this very reason………..to see how far UGA has fallen or has improved over the last 12 months. If we get embarrassed on National TV against Boise then lose to USCe again. The CMR era will end on 9-11.

What is your guess on the run -pass ratio UGA goes with in this game. Me personally, I think they need to try and control the game on offense, but I could be thinking wrong. I just don’t think it would benefit UGA to try and strike quick all the time and have the defense out there three fourths of the time.

Nice story on Tommy Smith… I didn’t realize he was from Atlanta. I am really curious to see how the ratings will compare for the Georgia / Boise State game to the LSU / Oregon game. Both should be great games, but with all the off field crap both LSU and Oregon have been going through this offseason, just not as excited about that matchup. Not sure why ESPN/ABC is showing the two biggest games of next weekend in the same exact time slot.

If both teams play mistake free, UGA wins. Too much size, too much speed at the non-skill positions, talent difference. There are questions to be answered by both teams. It’s not as though UGA is the only team out there with some transition going on. In the OL/DL is where it will be won.

Lowcountry if that is a stat line for UGA in this game… it won’t be close. I would not expect it though. I think this will be a low scoring hard fought game and will come down to who makes the least mistakes and who avoids a very critical mistake. It will probably be sloppy at times for both teams.
Georgia can’t afford to come out of the gate slow. Boise State has a habit of jumping on good teams early. They also have a habit of making mistakes and blowing big leads against good teams.

JB: His name is spelled “Branden” Smith, and, no, I can’t claim any direct knowledge of his being injured or wearing a boot around campus. But I can tell you this: It’s rarely as bad as it seems. For instance, Brandon Harton was on crutches on campus yesterday. I know because I saw him. But he’s not seriously injured. He’s slightly injured and trainers just taking precautions that it doesn’t get worse. I’ll find out what I can about B Smith, but Richt stated flatly that there were no new injuries last we talked to him on Wednesday. Something could’ve happened yesterday I suppose. But don’t go jumping off buildings just yet.

Oh boy, I don’t see much change form last year if all these kids are injured and not practicing. I won’t expect too much from the same team that couldn’t get it in the endzone from the 4 yard against UCF. Say what you will about King & Ealey but those guys could run at times. Crowell is injured and a rookie. AJ is gone. Boise will be fired up and have an experienced QB who can get rid of the ball in a hurry. Might be a long night for Coach Richt. Then again all these injuries could be nothing but a mirage for the media.
Good for Tommy Smith though. I hope you get all 27 tickets and they get to watch you lose. Nothing personal. I like the story and the fact that you are a student-athlete.

I am cautiously optimistic about this team and the Boise game. Would love a Boise a$$ whipping…but Im not so sure that will happen. At any rate I want to stay positive about this group. Its tough to come outta the gates w a big first game…but we will see how they handle it. I do hope that the coaches will do a good job…they know more than i will ever know about the game…let Grantham off the chain! Let those big Dawgs eat!

The name is kind of a misnomer. The penalty is not for excessive celebration, it is for taunting before you cross the goal line. You get a 15 yard penalty at the kick off for excessive celbration in the end zone.

As we head into the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game on September 3rd, us Boise State fans have heard all of the insults from the fans of Georgia and other BCS teams.
Every cliche’ argument from strength of schedule to playing on the “smurf turf” has been brought forth in an effort to minimize the Broncos’ impressive run over the past 10 years.
This happens every year, whether its Virginia Tech before they lost or Oregon before they lost twice to Boise State.
So to all you Dawg fans trying to act like you’re not nervous, here’s some fascinating facts for you.
1. Boise State is 46-12 on green fields in the past 10 years with only five losses in the past five years. That record is the third-best away record in all of Division FBS schools.
2. The players see the field on a different plane while playing, otherwise it would be really tough for BSU to dominate every opposing team on the blue when his receivers are camouflaged.
3. Boise State beat Fresno State 51-0 at Bronco Stadium wearing orange uniforms. This was actually one of the most dominating performances in BSU history. Maybe they should wear a different colored uniform on “The Blue.”
Another argument they bring up is the weak schedule.
1. There is some validity in this argument but just point out that the Mountain West Conference is actually ranked higher then the Big East—a fellow BCS conference.
2. Also, point out that Boise State wins when they get to play BCS schools. In the Chris Petersen era, Boise has lost only one game against a BCS team including some wins over Oregon when they won the Pac-10 in 2009 and Virginia Tech when they won the ACC in 2010. But don’t worry, this argument will get easier after a win in Atlanta.
3. Third argument you could make is that in BCS rankings (which takes strength of schedule into account), Boise State has finished the season ranked:
in the BCS top five twice in the past five years
in the BCS top 10 five times in the past seven years
and in the BCS top 25 seven times in the past eight years.
Keep in mind, BSU has only been a Division 1-A school since 1996 and didn’t join the WAC until 2001.
From the Georgia fans, you will also get the argument of the last time Boise went to Georgia and we lost by a significant amount.
I guess the blue turf really does give them an advantage. 1. Other then the obvious argument that the two teams meeting in 2011 are vastly different than the teams that met in 2005, BSU was being coached by Dan Hawkins at that point, and he did not adequately prepare Boise State like Coach Petersen would have. That is evident when he went to Colorado and proceeded to tank the Buffaloes during his tenure there.
2. You will have to concede that Georgia was very good that year. They went on to win the SEC championship, and BSU was in a rebuilding year but still only lost four games. They should have won. This year is much different. This Boise State team is much better, and this Georgia team is much worse then the last time they met.
Some will want to bring up the Nevada game last year. Well, if its a Georgia fan, this is too easy.
1. Just comment on their big wins over Idaho State and Louisiana-Lafayette in their 6-7 run last year. However, don’t mention the fact that they lost to an unranked Mississippi State, Florida and Colorado as it may hurt some feelings. Also, try to contain the laughter if you have to mention Colorado. Meanwhile, BSU hasn’t had a losing season in 13 years.
2. You can mention that Nevada finished the season at No. 11 right behind No. 9 Boise State but far ahead of Georgia, and Nevada finished 13-1 that year. Plus BSU lost in overtime by three.

The last insult I hear a lot is the fact that BSU is essentially a high school team because our stadium holds 33,500 fans, and they are right it does only hold about 34,000.
1. There is only one argument to this, and that is Boise has only been a Division 1-A school for the last 15 years. Georgia has been playing at a high level for over 100 years.
In that 100 years, Sanford Stadium is the best they can come up with? Hell, it’s not even good enough for the kickoff game let alone the best in the SEC. Give Boise State 100 years and see what kind of stadium they come up with.
In the next five years, BSU will increase its stadium from 33,500 to 53,000, and BSU will still maintain their home winning streak.
Some other interesting facts to use against Georgia. Did you know:
Boise State has the same amount of BCS bowl wins as Georgia.
Boise State has been ranked higher then Georgia in the BCS in four of the last five years?
Boise State has a NASCAR race car and Georgia doesn’t? That especially crushes Georgia fans. Oh, and it will race in Atlanta the same day BSU plays Georgia. Well played Broncos.
And last but not least, go ahead and mention the fact that the Georgia coach thought Kellen Moore had graduated, and that’s why they took the game but then tried to cover it up by saying he was joking. Joke or not, that sure is motivating for his players.
Hopefully, this helps you fight the good fight against the BCS powers or at least gives you some fire power against that crazed Georgia fan in your office.
Plus, at the very least, you can comment on Georgia’s hideous bright red Nike Pro Combat Uniform with the red stripe down the face mask.

To Georgia fans: I am a Boise st. fan. I posted this before but will once again. I respect Georgia, it’s coach, it’s talent, most of it’s fans, etc. I can see several scenarios where they win this game. However, do not discount Boise St. coaching (the best in the country) and their talent (very good, easily good enough to compete and win in this game). Both teams have good coaching and good talent. This will come down to execution and either team could win on Saturday. On the other front, I know the SEC is the most talented conference top to bottom right now. I know that if Boise St. were in the SEC this year we could very well lose 1-3 games (although within 2-3 years the better recruiting pipeline and better money that comes with being in the SEC would even out the talent depth disparity). But Boise st. is not in the SEC nor the Pac 10. Yet they have scheduled two top 20 opponents (Georgia and TCU) and a myriad of other bowl teams from last year (Tulsa, Toledo, Air Force, San Diego St., Nevada, Fresno St., Hawaii, etc.). Tulsa/Toledo/and Nevada are all expected to be conference champions this year for their respective conferences. So while not equal to an SEC conference schedule, their schedule deserves much more respect than being called a bunch of high school teams. That coupled with the fact that we have to go undefeated to even be considered for any BCS bowl game (not even talking the Nat. championship game), in my opinion deserves some respect. In the SEC you can still get in even with 2 losses (or in the case of Arkansas last year 3 losses). I am not ripping the SEC at all, I’m just saying Boise St. deserves more respect for their schedule and the expectations placed on them than they are getting by some people on here. BTW, Boise homers who come on here and show disrespect to Georgia, it’s fans, or it’s athlete’s intelligence levels, just stop it. You can’t gain respect by showing disrespect.
