Poll: Georgia’s Nike Pro Combat unis, love ‘em or hate ‘em?
I had to step away from work fairly quickly this past Saturday, not long after I posted my practice update. That update, of course, included a brief report on the new Nike Pro Combat uniforms Georgia is going to wear in the opener against Boise State.
Well, it wasn’t until late Sunday that I got to review what some of the reaction was to that piece. There seemed to be more than a few folks bothered by me using the phrase “generally negative” to describe fan reaction to the new uniforms. A few people, in comments on the blog, asked me to what poll was I referring and accused me of just trying to “stir up trouble” between UGA and its fans without having any real data to support it.
Loading ...So let’s clear this up. My determination was based on the reactions I was getting directly via email, Twitter and Facebook. In fact, those reactions were so decidedly negative that I actually tweeted to ask if there was anybody out there who actually liked the uniforms. Only then did I hear a couple of positive comments, and then they were still few.
But, of course, that is far from scientific. So short of hiring Gallup or some kind of market research company, I figured I’d just throw it out there to the masses this morning with a raw (but still unscientific) poll. What do I think? I think I actually like them. I mean, it’s only for one game, right? And the players love them. I tend fall on Mark Richt’s side when it comes to this being something you do for the players and not so much the fans.
In the meantime, just so you have it to reference, following is most everything I got after practice Saturday from players and coaches talking about the uniforms. After this, I plan to retire from writing about uniforms (well at least for about 10 days or so).
LB CHRISTIAN ROBINSON:
“I like them. We’re going to look good!”
“About the third quarter it’s not going to matter because it’s going to wear off and it’s going to matter who’s playing the best. It’s exciting for us to put something new on, but it won’t matter come the third or fourth quarter.
“It really is for the team. I loved the black jerseys when we had them. That was one of the reasons I came here. That was probably the most excited I’ve ever been watching them run out [in 2007]. I was in the end zone right when they broke them out and it was awesome.
“New jerseys excite the team a little bit. It’s something new that you haven’t worn before. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing for some of these guys. I might never get to wear the black jerseys again, so it was a once-in-a-lifetime-thing. Again, halfway though the game it’s not going to matter.
“I do like tradition. But I think one game out of the year you can do something new. It’s not like we’re changing our whole style for the whole season. It’s one game. If it’s upsetting somebody that bad, I’m sorry.”
WR TAVARRES KING:
“I love them. I think they’re awesome. We’ve still got to play so it’s not a magic potion or anything. But I love what Nike has done for us. We’re blessed to have those uniforms. I’m excited about them.
“It’s 2011, you know. You’ve got to have a little swag!”
GEORGIA COACH MARK RICHT:
“Well, I think that Nike did a great job of trying to capture a lot of the tradition of Georgia football. Some things are very subtle that the fans may not be able to see but the players can see. . . . I don’t know if the story that’s behind it is going to be released but when it is you’ll be able to read what Nike was thinking when it produced everything.
“But when the players saw it, they liked it and that’s the big thing, that they like it. And it’s a special game. It’s not what we would call a traditional uniform but it’s not a traditional game either. That’s kind of why we did it.
“I think we’re due. We’re due.
“Yeah, I think there are a lot of people that just don’t want to get away from that and I don’t blame them. That’s the reason we’re sticking it out there two weeks in advance, so everybody can get over it. I doubt we’ll do any surprise uniforms anymore. At least everybody’s got time to digest it. If everybodk just thinks about what’s most important and that’s playing the game, I think we’ll all be fine.”

What if your only care in life was UGA football. Also, what if you cared about a uniform. The fact that I am even writing this almost puts me in the knuckle dragger mouthbreather category. So your telling me that old redneck UGA fans don’t like the uniforms but the young black youth on the team and people in thier 20s and 30s are ok with it. Strange. I would have thought the opposite to be true. Next, we should poll old rednecks and young black youth and ask their opinions on Michael Vick. You will be surprised at the outcome.

These unis look great. Lots of red, with some black thrown in there. They look very simple. Nike did a great job with the design! For all the tradition ppl out there, it’s just for one game.
I personally hope we can break out the black jerseys this season too! The black jerseys are mean!

I give some of you UGA fans a hard time about your program. One thing I won’t do is trash talk about the regular uniform. I think it is one of the best in college football. This sell out to Nike is not only repugnant, but the actual uniform is disgusting.

I think they would be cooler if the helmet was all silver…that blocky looking red strip down the middle outlined with the black looks cheap. Otherwise, whatever…can’t wait to start the season!

I wish someone would post about the actual game of football and the Dawgs upcoming opponents. Ya know the X’s and O’s. I understand that the uni’s are a point of interest, if only because they are so bad to look at. But come on lets start talking about Boise and S. Carolina. Listening to 790 today and they were talking about bar room fights and all the Miami stuff…..no one is talking football. This is all just gossip and a distraction. WHO CARES ABOUT THE UNIFORM OR WHO HIT WHO IN A FIGHT OR WHO GOT TATTOOS OR WHATEVER!
Are the coaches gonna get these boys up for a tough fight against Boise? Are we gonna come out strong? Who needs to step up? Whats the game plan? etc………….

Funny how in all my life I have never seen a combat uniform even remotely close to this pathetic exeuse to one. Well may be their is this one group that wears this uniform before they strap a bomb to there dairy aire and throw themselves into a crowld of people. who gives a flying flip what the uniforms look like?! how hilarious it is that there are 8 pages of silly comments about the dumb new uniforms! You guys crack me up! I just wanted to check and make sure you all remember to keep the dome clean after your loss to Boise. Us Panthers have to play there later, so it’d be greatly appreciated. Nice, Atlanta87. Pretty sure none of us have a problem with it. It’s pretty boss to be playing at the dome-ask any panther fan. let’s see, would you rather raise fees even higher to pay to build a new stadium for an urban university or play on the same field as the state’s NFL team (indoors, sells beer, AC, large enough for all of us, no hedges)? that was cute, though.

I think some of these people are judging the uniforms from the AJC site. There is actually more to the uniform than the AJC showed. There are long black socks and black sleeves that go with the uniform which makes it looked alot better because it takes away some of the red. I absolutely love the uniforms! It’s by far the best combat uniform I have seen. I hope Nike can do us a black version of this uniform..GO DAWGS! GATA

The stadium my team plays in was built in 1939, with the latest upgrade in 2003, is outdoors where football is meant to be played, I can see the night sky and city lights when we have a night game and not some gray ceiling, I carry in my own alcohol so I don’t have to worry about buying a $7.50 beer (plus I’m pretty drunk from tailgating not in the middle of downtown so I don’t really have to worry about that anyways, has hedges (but is not Sanford stadium), and holds 87,500+ people )compared to what 40,000 at your games?), have fun in the Dome though.

Distraction: losing team’s top two leading rushers from last year, due to stupidity.
Distraction: head coach on the hottest seat in the SEC
Distraction: continued suspensions
Distraction: scooter injuries
Distraction: opening the season in a contrived, bowl-game-like atmosphere, against a pretty damn good team.
Distraction: opening the season after ending last season with an embarassing loss to USF, giving the team its first losing season since 1996, and three seasons in a rown with decreased number of wins. (No pressure there.)
Distraction: The problems at Miami definitely affect every team in the league. How many players are sitting around waiting for the bomb to drop on THEIR program?
Distraction: Opening the season in asinine looking costumes.
Can this team really afford any more distractions?
Concentrate on playing football, not how you look in the mirror.
This is all NIKE’s I doubt Richt had any say so in the whole costume change. It is probably in writing somewhere in the contract that both sides signed to play the Chic Fil A Kickoff (when did they start playing bowl games at the BEGINNING of the season?)
Lastly, I’m sick of the word “hater.” People who use the word “hater” to describe someone who has a different opinion on something are displaying a marked sense of immaturity.
