Poll: Georgia’s Nike Pro Combat unis, love ‘em or hate ‘em?

uganotes.0821I had to step away from work fairly quickly this past Saturday, not long after I posted my practice update. That update, of course, included a brief report on the new Nike Pro Combat uniforms Georgia is going to wear in the opener against Boise State.

Well, it wasn’t until late Sunday that I got to review what some of the reaction was to that piece. There seemed to be more than a few folks bothered by me using the phrase “generally negative” to describe fan reaction to the new uniforms. A few people, in comments on the blog, asked me to what poll was I referring and accused me of just trying to “stir up trouble” between UGA and its fans without having any real data to support it.

So what do you think about the Nike Pro Combat uniforms Georgia is going to wear against Boise State?

So let’s clear this up. My determination was based on the reactions I was getting directly via email, Twitter and Facebook. In fact, those reactions were so decidedly negative that I actually tweeted to ask if there was anybody out there who actually liked the uniforms. Only then did I hear a couple of positive comments, and then they were still few.

But, of course, that is far from scientific. So short of hiring Gallup or some kind of market research company, I figured I’d just throw it out there to the masses this morning with a raw (but still unscientific) poll. So be sure to click one of the selections to the left and check back to see the results.

What do I think? I think I actually like them. I mean, it’s only for one game, right? And the players love them. I tend fall on Mark Richt’s side when it comes to this being something you do for the players and not so much the fans.

In the meantime, just so you have it to reference, following is most everything I got after practice Saturday from players and coaches talking about the uniforms. After this, I plan to retire from writing about uniforms (well at least for about 10 days or so).

LB CHRISTIAN ROBINSON:

“I like them. We’re going to look good!”

“About the third quarter it’s not going to matter because it’s going to wear off and it’s going to matter who’s playing the best. It’s exciting for us to put something new on, but it won’t matter come the third or fourth quarter.

“It really is for the team. I loved the black jerseys when we had them. That was one of the reasons I came here. That was probably the most excited I’ve ever been watching them run out [in 2007]. I was in the end zone right when they broke them out and it was awesome.

“New jerseys excite the team a little bit. It’s something new that you haven’t worn before. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing for some of these guys. I might never get to wear the black jerseys again, so it was a once-in-a-lifetime-thing. Again, halfway though the game it’s not going to matter.

“I do like tradition. But I think one game out of the year you can do something new. It’s not like we’re changing our whole style for the whole season. It’s one game. If it’s upsetting somebody that bad, I’m sorry.”

WR TAVARRES KING:

“I love them. I think they’re awesome. We’ve still got to play so it’s not a magic potion or anything. But I love what Nike has done for us. We’re blessed to have those uniforms. I’m excited about them.

“It’s 2011, you know. You’ve got to have a little swag!”

GEORGIA COACH MARK RICHT:

“Well, I think that Nike did a great job of trying to capture a lot of the tradition of Georgia football. Some things are very subtle that the fans may not be able to see but the players can see. . . . I don’t know if the story that’s behind it is going to be released but when it is you’ll be able to read what Nike was thinking when it produced everything.

“But when the players saw it, they liked it and that’s the big thing, that they like it. And it’s a special game. It’s not what we would call a traditional uniform but it’s not a traditional game either. That’s kind of why we did it.

“I think we’re due. We’re due.

“Yeah, I think there are a lot of people that just don’t want to get away from that and I don’t blame them. That’s the reason we’re sticking it out there two weeks in advance, so everybody can get over it. I doubt we’ll do any surprise uniforms anymore. At least everybody’s got time to digest it. If everybodk just thinks about what’s most important and that’s playing the game, I think we’ll all be fine.”

These uniforms are just plain UGLY!
Looks like cartoons! What’s next, dying the hedges blue with Nike swooshes on them? Yes, Nike greases the palms of athletic departments, but for Cripes sake, show a little pride and dignity!

Not to mention, but I will, calling them “combat” uniforms is an insult to and dimunition of anybody who served in our military. Despite the intensity of SEC football it is NOT combat.

Also, am I the only person who remembers how pitiful we looked the last time we let Nike dress us? (Black uniforms against Alabama)

Alabama…Auburn…LSU…Penn State…USC…Notre Dame…Oklahoma…Texas.

These eight schools are rich in tradition and uphold their honor by not allowing those “commoners”

from Nike to push them around. Phil Knight is a nouveau riche ego maniac and schools like Georgia

continue to enable this guy. Mark Richt and the players have been told what to say and are scared

of upsetting Nike.

What would Richt say if Phil Knight wanted to spray paint the hedges a different color?

How ironic that a school whose mascot is a bulldog chooses to work with a company that hires a convicted dog murderer/felon as a spokesperson and pays him millions of dollars. To hell with Michael Vick, and I hope UGA loses every game for working with Nike. What a bunch of losers you are.

Here’s the deal. I’m 35 years old, so I grew up during our heyday. I’ve been through Dooley’s lethargic latter years, through Goff’s incompetent years, through Donnan’s wasted talent years, and now through Richt’s apathetic years. I’ve seen Herschel, Worley, Hampton, Hearst, and Moreno all leave early. I’ve seen top 5 recruiting classes decimated by arrests and injury. I’ve seen an AD caught being stupid. I saw a preseason #1 team with first round NFL talent all over the field not even win a division title. I’ve seen us lose 15 of 18 to our biggest rival, and I’ve seen every SEC team worth mentioning win a title while we have yet to even be in a title game. BUT…when we run out of the Georgia Dome locker room sporting these things, it will be the first time in my entire life that I will be ashamed to be a Dawg. There are just some things in life that are too sacred to totally scrap…even if it is for just one game. In the truest sense of the word…it is sad. We have become the very thing we profess not to be.

I like tradtion. But for ONE game?? Sure why not. I dont care if they wear tu-tus as long as they kill BS, SC and FL and go to SEC champ. Then theyll b wearing the ole red jerseys w white numbers, silver britches in the sUGAr bowl!!!

Army already did last year. They were camo, which was pretty cool , but that’s not tradition, that is nothing more than style. So if its a matter of just not dealing with Phil…….well, I guess we should have more “honor” that the United States Military Academy?

I don’t think a big ol’ hountstooth stripe on the helmet was exactly the tradition at Alabama last year either was it? Nor do I think there are two different companies named Nike, are there?

As some or most of you Georgia people must be unaware of is that UGA use to wear a silver helmet back in the day. Also in 79 they wore red pants. Its just one game get over it and get with the players!!! (Everyone has to be on the bus!)

If the United States Military Academy had Nike add pro combat camo to honor Army’s tradition, then the University Of Georgia had Nike add shoulder-to-foot “bright embarrassment red” to honor UGA’s tradition.

I don’t particularly care for the new “uniform” especially the Helmet. I am curious how much money UGA received to wear these on the 3rd???
I guess when you go 6 and 7 the previous year it really doesn’t matter what the uniform looks like the next year.

It’s a new era. That damned 1776 American flag is out of date. We need to put lime green stars on an alternating pink and yellow stripe pattern. A real American would like the new flag, and if you don’t, you can just move to Canada. Just get over it.

i dont like the uniforms but who cares. its for the players. these guys dont get paid and they deserve something. wearing these unis is like christmas for those kids so show a little support for our guys regardless. all i care about is gettin the W against boise. besides the unis will probably help with recruiting. we all like the red with silver britches and im sure our guys do too but the “clown suits” are what kids like these days and there is nothing wrong with keeping your players happy.
