ATHENS – Online fan reaction to Georgia’s new Nike Pro Combat uniforms, publicly unveiled on Saturday, was generally negative. This came as no surprise to Bulldogs coach Mark Richt.

“I think there are a lot of people that just don’t want to get away from [tradition] and I don’t blame them,” Richt said. “That’s the reason we’re sticking it out there two weeks in advance, so everybody can get over it.”

The new design features a silver helmet with a wide red stripe down the middle, red jersey, red pants, llong black socks, all in the Nike “Pro Combat” style. UGA and Boise State both agreed to wear the specially-designed uniforms for one game only when they play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Sept. 3 in the Georgia Dome.

Georgia has a 2-2 record under Richt when it has changed its uniforms. The Bulldogs famously beat Auburn 45-20 in their first-ever “blackout” in 2007. They also rolled Hawaii 41-20 in black jerseys and pants in the 2008 Sugar Bowl.

But the last two times it hasn’t gone well. Georgia lost to Alabama 41-30 – after trailing 31-0 at halftime – in 2008. Wearing black helmets and black pants in 2009, the Bulldogs fell to Florida 41-17.

“We’re due,” Richt said. “I doubt we’ll do any surprise uniforms anymore. At least everybody’s got time to digest it this time. If everybody just thinks about what’s most important and that’s playing the game, I think we’ll all be fine.”

Richt said it’s not about motivation or breaking with tradition.

“When the players saw it, they liked it and that’s the big thing,” he said. “And it’s a special game. It’s not what we would call a traditional uniform but it’s not a traditional game either. That’s kind of why we did it.”

Meanwhile, the players love them.

“I think they’re awesome,” junior wide receiver Tavarres King said. “We’ve still got to play so it’s not a magic potion or anything. But I love what Nike has done for us. We’re blessed to have those uniforms. I’m excited about them.”

Said linebacker Christian Robinson: “I do like tradition, but I think one game out of the year you can do something new. It’s not like we’re changing our whole style for the whole season. It’s one game. If it’s upsetting somebody that bad, I’m sorry.”

Dogs 19th in AP poll

The Associated Press Top 25 was released Saturday and Georgia was ranked 19th. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 22 in the coaches’ poll released earlier this month.

“That’s good,” Richt said. “It’s nice to be ranked.”

Said senior defensive end DeAngelo Tyson: “That’s pretty good. We can’t go anywhere but up starting at 19. We just don’t want to go down.”

Boise State, Georgia’s opening opponent, was ranked No. 5.

“Good. I’m very excited,” Georgia’s King said of the Broncos. “They should be 5, if not even higher.”

Crowell wows team at practice

Tailback Isaiah Crowell apparently is completely recovered from the groin injury that sidelined him for six days. In his second practice back, Crowell wowed his coaches and teammates in the scrimmage portion of Saturday morning’s practice.

“Isaiah went live today and he made some plays,” Richt said. “He had a couple of great runs and a great catch and run after the catch for a touchdown.”

Said King: “Isaiah Crowell came in and was just making plays all over. I was excited about that.”

It was the first time Crowell has gone full speed since injuring the groin on Aug. 12.

“He went a little yesterday and that was enough for him, I think, to realize he could go,” Richt said. “We had a great competitive day and he wanted to be a part of it. So I think his adrenalin took over and he competed and he competed well. It was great to see.”

Injury report

Crowell’s backfield mate Richard Samuel was not about to return. Richt said the junior will be out at least until “early next week” with a strained quadricep muscle.

Nose guard John Jenkins sat out after being sidelined with a mild hamstring pull on Friday. Fellow nose guard Kwame Geathers returned from an undisclosed injury that kept him out on Friday. Also, freshman wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell was out Saturday due to a pulled leg muscle. Freshman outside linebacker Ray Drew will be out at least another week with a separated shoulder suffered in a scooter accident.

Good guy. I’m glad his days were then, and not now. He’d never have survived the decade (70’s) they had, now. Nor Dooley.

Sorry……Nike does it again……UGLY. As bad a uniform as what the Gators wore last year in JAX. I guess both Georgia and Boise players will all be eye sores with the NIke combat (more like, Nike no design sense) uniforms.

I don’t know. It seems like the past few years that far more significance is given to what teams wear for a particular game than how they play. Fabric and color is no substitute for performance. If what is worn makes a difference then football has hit a new low.

79 wasn’t exactly a fun year to remember either. 31 points to Va. 0-31 at home no less. And 33 point to Au. 27 to SC. This back in the day when teams didn’t put up big point every week too.

The good ol days. when your team could have a bad year, and you could still support the staff and nobody wanted to bust your kneecaps for doing so.

All you old folks should get over this uniform non-sense! I think they are pretty cool unis myself, and it shows where the athletic apparel is headed…I plan to get one for myself and son. For the 60+ crowd, unlike Dooley and Herchel, the silver britches will be back soon enough,

I don’t know what makes anyone think that it’s only the Old folks who are complaining. I’d say as many if not more of the fan well under 60 have said more about them. Granted soem of that was just the next excuse to complain about something, but still. I also have heard plenty of older fan saying that while they don’t like them, it is what it is. The vast majority of folks seem to be saying , they just think they are ugly which is just a personal taste issue and not a generational hangup.

@chopdawg Would you rather have Coach Russell as D-Coordinator or the assorted group that CMR has used since Van Gorder left. You can pull any one year out of a teams history to make a point, but taken as a whole career I will side with Coach Russell. And I remember the Virginia Cavaliers hanging a 31-0 Beat down on the Dawgs on Homecoming in 1978.If I remember the offense gave up a couple of the scores.

Most likely by today’s standards things would have been different. We always seem to remember times that were better in the past. The train is pulling out of the station, it is what it is, support it or get off the train, or stand for something and live with the consequences. Personally, like I said last night, the unis aren’t that ugly, but I don’t like them. Whose decision this was I don’t really know, but rest assured if we lose to Boise, Richt will get the blame.

Here’s to hoping Coach Richt will stop talking about everyone else doing things “The Georgia Way” and start doing things “The Georgia Way” himself. Most likely that will solve all the other problems we have. Good Night All !

Now, the players love this – can’t wait to see the results of the Boise State game. Thank God I’m working that day/night! Hope they practice in it so they know who is on their team.

Hopefully the Dogs just don’t continue to hurt themselves by shooting themselves in the foot as they have done these past 2 – 3 years.

My understanding, which is purely hearsay, is richt got a lot of $$$ from a Nike contract, the fine print of which says we have to do this. Bama and others made sure they had different contract protecting their traditional unis. so while richt is not directly responsible for the unis, he is responsible for the contract that led to them, just what I heard.

CANEDAWG, the nike pc uniforms STINK like...... !!!

Encore explanation of the Nike PC helmet:

Why is the Nike PC helmet primarily silver ?

The Dawgs used to wear silver headgear with no stripes or logo originating from the 1939 until 1964, when Vince Dooley was hired and changed the helmets red. Former UGA coach Wally Butts was the originator of the Silver open faced headgear in 1939, which at that time did not bear a facemask. Butts further established UGA’s famed Silver Britches with red jerseys with medium sized silver block numerals in 1939.

Why does this silver helmet have the thick red centerstripe ?

The helmet has the thick red centerstripe which extends through the black facemask to honor Georgia coaching legend, former defensive coordinator Coach Erskine “Erk” Russell. Before games in warmup drills a pumped Coach Russell would challenge his defensive players to head butt him (with wreckless abandon) with their helmets on to instill a mean hardnosed streak or what he designated in 1975 to be Junkyard Dawg mentality into the defense. This drill was wildly successful and Coach Russell dubbed his angry defensive charges, The Junkyard Dawg Defense. As a result of the head to head collisions with his helmeted players, Coach Russell would bleed from the forehead and trickle down his face. Coach Russell wore the dried blood on his face as a badge of honor, and his players were constantly reminded of their Junkyard toughness simply by looking at his bloodied face through to course of games. With the wide red centerstripe extending through the facemask is Nike’s way of paying homage to Coach Russell and the tradition of the Junkyard Dawgs of 1975.

What about the Oval G on the PC helmet ?

It was derived from the Legendary Championship teams of the early 1960s Green Bay Packer teams of the great pro coach Vincent T. Lombardi. UGA requested and was granted permission from the Packers in 1964 to use their trademark Oval G for use on Vince Dooley’s new red headgear designed for UGA.

Do you want to see photos of the Great Erk Russell’s legendary gameface and other great shots of historical pictures of unique old school UGA pictures, then go to: http://www.dawgbone.net/oldschoolarchives.html

I only do this cause I know true Dawgs love UGA as much as I do. ENJOY the pix !!!!!

“I’m sure folks would call that a gimmic now.”

.

.

AltamahawDawg, you have said a ton of truly Hee Haw comments on these blogs, most notably Flame personal attacks on fans who are not in the least satisfied running off 26 players Mark Richt’s “coaching staff” recruited here who will not play vs Boise State, who could have; and replaced them with scholarships to walk-ons who never have played on offense or defense and never will – when they are the reason we average the # 7 recruiting class averaging both Scout.com and Rivals.com all 11 recruiting classes, while we have amassed a 13-12 record the last 5 years vs SEC East and 21 Losses in total these last 5 seasons, averaging more than 4 Losses a year.

Now, we have a very wide red stripe in the middle of the helmet for our 2011 season to open, where if we don’t in this Down SEC East make it to The SEC Championship Game, it will then have been Six (6) entire seasons – and, yet we face a “schedule” of 10 CUPCAKES against this schedule we obviously should go 11-3 (and that would be beating no one.)

Erk Russell led us to our 6th National Championship and this one Consensus, who died 5 years ago, back 31 years ago while the Railroad Tracks’ Faithful wanted to dump Dooley and replace him with Erk, a sentiment shared by many to this day, and he lived to be 80 years old; and coached us to the fabled Junkyard Dawg Defenses where we simply had the best Defensive Backs at Rover and Free Safety which we obviously have not had and do not have yet again this season. And, Erk won not only the only AP Poll National Championship of the Six (6) NC UGA Bulldogs have in the NCAA Official Records Book FBS 1-A Football (Georgia tek has 0 of by the way.), but then left when we failed to promote him to head coach to start up football again in this state 150 miles South on US 80 and US 301 at what was Georgia’s Teachers’ College, where he coached from 1981 to 1989

WINNING FOUR (4) CONSENSUS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 1980-1989

And, of course, in practice he absolutely banged his bare shaved head against the Junkyard Dawgs, and you have the unmitigated gall to come in here and say you are

SURE

FOLKS

WOULD

CALL

THAT

A

GIMMICK

NOW.

Other posters have told you on this blog you ran and hid from all season long last year while instead we have to go back 58 years to find an UGA team who lost more than the 7 losses we put up last season, that you should do us all a favor and pull for Georgia tek.

Why don’t you address how you too obviously are DEFENDING MICHAEL F. ADAM$

You are on the wrong side of everything; how is that possible AltamahawDawg ?

You don’t EVER get anything right. Joe Cox throws the deep ball better than any Quarterback. We will win the NC 2010. You are not a Bulldogs’ fan you said to everyone this time last year who suggested to you that we had no secondary, no push for QB sacks, a slow small Quarterback who would be instead himself sacked, no running back, a wide receiver interested in no one but himself who never not once beat any opponent in any of our big games all his years here, and an OL who had proven that they could neither block for the pass nor for the run.

PTFO

And, you follow that up with coming back Thank You Lord for 2011 to try your hand at posting again (before you run and hide all this season too, hiding behind your keyboard with your personal insults and that’s it) and say to us all that

YOU ARE SURE FOLKS WOULD CALL ERK RUSSELL A GIMMICK NOW.

ChopDawg,

It is the 1974 season which got Erk Russell to come up with his idea of Junkyard Dawgs as inspiration, and no gimmick AltamahawDawg, butted heads with his players he bald and they in helmets, along with One More Time. Hardly can the 1974 season, then, be what is discussed about the Coach who Is The Coach of The Decade 1980-1989 according to USA Today. He took whatever players Vince Dooley did not want on offense, and made them into the Junkyard Dawgs. Instead of your view of Erk Russell, ChopDawg, the real view of Erk Russell besides his 4 Consensus National Championships 1980-1989, are what he did here in getting his 1st Consensus NC and only AP Poll NC UGA ever has had (which Georgia tek again has 0 of.)

During the 17 years that Erk Russell served as Georgia Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator, the ‘Dawgs played 192 games and held the opposition to 17 or fewer points in 135 of them. In 74 of those contests, the defense kept the other team’s scoring in the single digits, including 27 shutouts. Coach Erk Russell’s Georgia defenses allowed more than 28 points just 18 times in 17 seasons.

Which is the more accurate depiction ChopDawg, yours of 1974 which is why he became a great coach, our greatest coach ever, or mine explaining your 1974 season (I was there too on the RR Tracks sir.), which is the more accurate depiction of what you wish to talk about GRHS Erk Russell.

Who do we have on this “coaching staff” of Mark Richt like this ?

http://www.dawgbone.net/OldSchoolPics/erk09-08-06b.jpg

“Erk Russell is the greatest motivator in the history of college football, no doubt,” Scott Woerner said. “He was just phenomenal. Not having the opportunity to play for him would have been a tragedy in my life.”

No gimmick AltamahawDawg.

A gimmick is Dream Team which is # 6 recruiting class in the nation according to both Scout.com and according to ESPN.

A gimmick is telling us that everyone wanted to hire Mike Bobo and Bryan McClendon so we are giving them both huge raises.

A gimmick is every sorry attempt he has ever made to change our # 1 in the nation uni and this includes his latest lie : the players love the uni – no they don’t Nike’s own site refers to the uni as not a uni but as a uni “system.” It is the system that the players like not the red pants CLOWN SUIT. Dawg fan babies will CRY to have wear those as pajamas. Don’t make me wear those mommie. I don’t wanna. The wide red stripe is no tribute to Erk Russell but a sorry attempt by a company who NEVER HAS BEEN a fashion statement. I have Nike shoes I wear folks call MOON SHOES. Great shoes, comfortable, last forever, expensive as they can be, but FASHION STATEMENT Mark Richt – this gimmick by you sir to say the players LOVE THE UNI, is just more of your BS Mark Richt. BS while you have 26 players who could have played vs Boise State you don’t have, players you get credit for recruiting here who are all elsewhere. Gimmick tell the players to go onto the field and purposely get a penalty. Gimmick. Gimmick to say you did not promise Donald Shockley in 2001 when you redshirted DJ that you promise Donald that you will play DJ in the 1st few series of every game for the next following 4 years, if he doesn’t pull his son from UGA. Of course DJ would not have let him, but a promise extracted in that meeting 2001.

Gimmick that you knocked the lid off this # 11 all-time 1-A wins football program today with his win over # 4 vols 2001 when what you really did 2001 was to lose 4 games.

Gimmick to call yourself the # 4 best coach in all of America Mark Richt THIS YEAR 2011 in this newspaper, when in fact over the last 5 years of 21 Losses, you are in fact # 23 in the nation and not even # 4 in your own conference.

Gimmick after gimmick after gimmick.

I will not let go Willie Martinez you vehemently told us all 2006. Your college roommate. Gimmick.

Field Goal from the 1-yard line vs Conference USA Central Florida George O’Leary. Gimmick.

How you argued with the BCS in the newspapers 2007 that UGA deserved to be in the NC game you yelled and screamed while LSU beat 2 teams who finished in the Top 10 and you lost to the likes of a sorry vols’ team and an even worse 6-6 not even in a bowl game South Carolina 2007 : Gimmick.

2008 ranked # 1 in the nation by every single poll, all of them, and let 21 players go out on the town and have a real party.

# 2 all-time in Fulmer Cup Standings Mark Richt’s recruits.

Coaching ?

Leadership ?

3 wins and 9 losses in 12 games vs teams finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 all 10 years.

Great in game games ?

Beat the teams we are supposed to beat ?

Why then 16 losses to teams less talented than us like Boise State in 10 years and 10 of those 16 teams did not even end up in the AP Poll Top 25, even with their win over us, the other 6 of whom would not have without their win over you.

I’m the 4th best college football coach.

Gimmick.

I’ll give you some gimmicks AltamahawDawg, not that you even know what a gimmick is or how to even spell it.

Mark Richt is nothing but gimmick after gimmick after gimmick after gimmick after gimmick after gimmick after gimmick after gimmick.

The uniform that we wore in the Tennessee game in 1980 looked great and if you had taken the Pro Combat look and modeled it against the color combination of that uniform it would have been the best uniform Nike has ever used the Pro Combat on. It would have been amazing. A blown opportunity to play in the Sept.3rd game with one of the classiest uniform ever for Georgia.

Not bad…..Not bad at all. Really kinda like them. I am glad the UGA game unis are not as glaring as BSU and VT last year. Those were different.
