Nike beats UGA to punch and unveils Pro Combat uniforms

uganotes.0821

UGA and Nike showed off the Bulldogs' Pro Combat uniform that the team will wear for its opening game against Boise State. (Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com)

ATHENS – UGA was claiming to offer the first glimpse at noon today of the new Nike Pro Combat uniforms on its Facebook page (facebook.com/georgiabulldogs). But apparently Nike didn’t get the memo. The sneaker giant went ahead and posted pictures earlier this morning of the uniforms they’ll wear against Boise State in the Chick-fil-A game.

Click RIGHT HERE to take a look for yourself. In general, it’s all red with a silver helmet and black socks. Reaction on Twitter and Facebook and on fan sites this morning has been somewhat divided with more dislikes than likes, from what I can see. Some of the comments have been hilarious.

UPDATE: Here’s A LINK to UGA’s gallery and a video at georgiadogs.com.

Let’s hear what you guys think.

Maybe the dawg nation should throw their Nikes in the trash in exchange for Reeboks. That would teach them a lesson.

I hate Georgia (the school, not the state)

There’s 11 pages of posts? God you UGA people need a life. The uniforms suck, the team has sucked for 30 years….other than Hines Ward, who else has done anything in the NFL?

Once again, when ESPN and Nike gets involved it’s all about money. Uniform is ok but you don’t mess with the traditional helmet. Same goes with the black version. I’m sure the kids like the retro look but leave the traditional helmets alone. You want to mess something up with color, get a tatoo.

All red. The last time we wore all red was against Clemson in like… 1983.

Nike has the market on fuggly cornered. Unfortunately, they trapped my Dawgs in the same corner.

Lord, give me strength.

These uniforms are a joke. This is not street fighting. This is UGA FOOTBALL, 120 years strong in tradition. The last time we broke tradition, the all black at Florida a few years back, we looked like hillbillies and played like amateurs. Boys I hope this does not come back to haunt us in Atlanta on national TV…What are y’all thinking. The UGA red helmet is worn by my heroes..

This is UGA football, 120 years strong in tradition, not street fighting. The last time we broke tradition this much, a few years back at Florida in all black, we looked like hillbillies and played like amateurs. I hope this does not come back to haunt us in Atlanta, on national TV, against the 5th ranked team in the country. The red helmet has been worn by my heroes..

You can do strange things with money. This is a college football exercise in excess. It has nothing to to with the game.

Red Hill,

It has nothing to do with how far you say CMR has fallen. This is a package deal that comes with playing in this special opening game. It is for one game and the players like the change for this one game. The players and coaches know that the man makes the uniform, not the other way around so fans should just accept it, and back the team up, where it counts; On the field.
In my career in the military, I had more than a few uniform changes and some I liked and some I thought were bad ideas. It never changed my sense of duty or pride in my organization, nor did it have any affect on performance of duty. In Nam they changed how our combat uniforms wewre while I was there and they were lighter, and welcomed as it it made it easier to tolerate the muggy conditions there. Some changes are good.

Pete,

Like I said earlier. The all red uniforms will allow us to hide the blood from the Boise players better, that they will be losing on the field. It is mostly for the benfit of your squeamish fans. Your team will know all about the color red after the game, because your players will be seeing it all over them, every time they have the ball, and when the UGA players put them in the turf, when UGA has the ball. After the game, Boise will probably try and ban the color in the state.

DAWG 88,

Do you really think most of the UGA haters on this blog need another reason to hate UGA. Get serious! They would find something to hate about UGA, if UGA had won ten NC’s in a row. Most of the negative bloggers appear to be tech. fans, and most use different handles each time they come onto these blogs, and will not admit they are bugs. It is a good thing Tech. didn’t get to play in this kick off classic. Can you imagine all yellow uniforms? It would look like a bunch of bananas.

Very cool helmet but very UGAly uniforms!!!! They (Nike) can do better than this. With UGA’s colors, they could have done something really special.

I don’t care what they wear as long as they win – but Where’s the “WAC” on the left collarbone? Not nearly as bad as the black unis from the Fla game two years ago. Didn’t we learn from that game that after a series or two your dress just doesn’t matter anymore. The adrenilin doesn;t follow you back onto the field. Hope Nike goes broke on this one….

I hope that this is just a ploy to get the Dawg fans really fired up. Maybe the team will just wear these pajamas for the warm ups before the game, and then do a quick change into the old traditional uniforms, prior to bursting onto the field for kickoff. You talk about putting an electrifying charge into the Georgia Dome! At any rate, maybe we can live with them for one game; but they’re certainly not the best advertisement for Nike.

These uniforms are the ugliest uniforms in college football and that is saying a lot, Even uglier than Oregon’s and I did not think that possible. What in the name God was the UGA thinking to let Nike design such a terrible looking uniform. Please come to your senses and get rid of this stupid Buck Rodgers space looking uniform !!!!!!!

I’m toldl that the helmet for that game is symbolic of a photo of Erk Russell with blood running down his head. That’s a solid traditional image of great Georgia football for the players. Whether or not I like the uniforms, I don’t want the players to feel bad in them. That’s a good way to lose a game.
Go Dawgs!!
