ATHENS – As for A.J. Green fans, there are none bigger than Georgia’s Rantavious Wooten. The junior wide receiver from Belle Glade, Fla., spent two seasons getting to know Green up close and personal and witnessing his daily feats in games and on Woodruff Practice Fields.
That said, Wooten doesn’t feel the wide receiver position is suddenly the weak link of the Bulldogs’ football team. He has heard it described that way and doesn’t much care for it.
“The whole receiving corps takes that personally,” Wooten said. “Of course, A.J. and Kris Durham came here and made plays. But as a group of receivers, we all can make plays. Actually I think we have more depth this year than we did last year and I think we made big strides in this camp. We’re going to show the Bulldog Nation what we can do and we’re going to show everybody we can get it done without A.J.”
Wooten has been one of reasons for optimism. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound speedster from Belle Glade, Fla., is showing the same type of form he did as a freshman when he caught 10 passes and scored two touchdowns.
Wooten played in 12 games and started three that first season. But he actually got on the field less as a sophomore and finished with 7 catches for 41 yards and one touchdown.
“It was disappointing for me and I took it to heart,” Wooten said. ” I took it personally. I came out this year and I knew what I had to do and I knew what the coaches expected from me. I just need to be consistent. I’m trying to show them that I can be consistent and they can depend on me.”
He’s apparently getting his message across. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said Wooten is position to be among the Bulldogs’ first three receivers behind Tavarres King and Marlon Brown. He’s being pushed by Michael Bennett and Malcolm Mitchell.
“Rantavious has had a very good preseason,” Bobo said. “Coach [Tony] Ball challenged him. He had to be more consistent. He had shown flashes of making plays but hadn’t been consistent. He’s being more consistent now and has had a great camp.”
Big John goes down
The Bulldogs got a big scare Friday when nose guard John Jenkins had to be helped off the field during the full-contact practice. But it wasn’t as bad as it looked. Jenkins suffered what was described as a “mild hamstring pull,” according to Ron Courson, UGA’s director of sports medicine. Jenkins’ recovery time was called “day-to-day” but Georgia has said in the past the injuries generally take seven to 10 days to heal.
Jenkins is a 6-foot-4, 350-pound junior college All-American who transferred to Georgia from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He was expected to step in as the starting nose guard but thus far has been unable to unseat 6-6, 350-pound sophomore Kwame Geathers.
Crowell, Samuel back on field
The Bulldogs got a welcomed sight with tailbacks Isaiah Crowell and Richard Samuel back on Woodruff Practice Fields on Friday. Crowell has been out a week with the groin pull while Samuel was sidelined with an quad strain since last Saturday. Both players remained in green jerseys, signifying their non-contact status. Crowell was able to participate throughout the entire practice while Samuel said out for the teamwork and scrimmage portions.
Asked if the duo would be ready if there was a game this weekend, running backs coach Bryan McClendon said, “oh, definitely.
“Isaiah got to do everything we did out there today,” he said “Richard, we’re having to slow him down a little bit. But he’s doing great. He got to do all the individual work. He got to do everything except for contact stuff. Both of those guys are doing great and healing up well.”
Bobo said Brandon Harton and Ken Malcome have been working first team in the meantime.
Dogs plan to ‘Spread the Red’
Can’t make it to Athens for Fans Picture Day and the big unveiling of Georgia’s Nike Pro Combat uniforms? Have no fear because UGA is providing a sneak preview via Facebook.
According to UGA promotions director Emily Deitz, pictures of the Bulldogs in the new uniforms they’ll wear against Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game will be posted at www.facebook.com/georgiabulldogs at noon on Saturday. The real live Bulldogs won’t appear in the actual uniforms until 3 p.m. during Picture Day at Sanford Stadium.
Deitz, in an interview with Chuck Dowdle on 680 The Fan, provided a hint as to what the uniforms might look.
“I would definitely plan on wearing a lot of red that day,” she said of the Sept. 3rd game in the Georgia Dome. “A lot of red.”
Etc. . . .
Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee is currently running second team at both left and right guard and center. Line coach Will Friend has been extremely impressed with the Buford High grad. . . . Offensive lineman Austin Long has returned to practice and his fully participating after missing two weeks with mononucleosis. . . . Receiver Israel Troupe is sidelined with a groin injury. . . . Secondary coach Scott Lakatos said safety Bacarri Rambo is still running with the first team. . . . Freshman outside linebacker Ray Drew is still out with a separated shoulder. . . . Defensive back Nick Marshall is back from a hamstring injury.

I hope people and traditionalist don’t complain about the new unis. These are 18-22 year olds who like a new look from time to time. Once a year in black jerseys or pro combat isn’t bad. I’m not saying becoming Oregon but recruits like the new look.

The part about “wear a LOT of red” scares me. Someone please reassure me we are not wearing red pants with our red jerseys and helmets. Of course, even if we did it probably wouldn’t look any worse than those uniforms that Richt borrowed from Grambling for the Florida game 2 years ago.

Keeping an open-mind about the new uni’s …… & I’m a huge traditionalist for sure. Really wondering if the ” one-time ” deal will feature a drastic helmet look though. That would be odd , but as said, couldn’t possibly be worse than those putrid black things …
If we’re in all red , gotta think the helmets might be a silver / gray w/red stripe down the middle. We’ll know soon …..

So many programs have reduced these injuries that our Dawgs are experiencing every year. Good news about the running backs. Now let’s get them ready to take and deal out some punishment and we will be OK. Big John, is probably feeling the heavy pressure of expectations placed on him and he may be trying a little too hard and not thinking before he makes a play. His ham string will be Ok by opening day, and he will surely be an acceptable back up for Geathers at least. I personally hope to see them both on the field a few plays at least and I hope our DC has plans to make that happen. You are talking about 700 pounds of strong and relatively fast big men to contain then. That is a tall order for any offensive lineman to have to worry about.
I also think the WR’s will be just fine and will show game improvemnet through out the year. I think the DAWGS have to play the first three or four games being defensive minded and letting the offense get it’s feet wet. If after, the first four games, UGA is 3-1, they will have a very successful season.

This is UGA’s time to beat an opponent ranked better than us, which Richt has struggled at. This will renew the program headed into the SC game. Could you imagine 2-0. We don’t win the first, I don’t see winning the second game, my opinon. Carolina will be bigger, faster, stronger.

Your forgetting that Jenkins isn’t the only big man we have. Geathers is actually bigger than Jenkins although I think Jenkins has less muscle mass. Geathers is just strong as hell. That’s all there is to it. Boise’s center will have a rough time. When you’ve never seen a NG that big, you just don’t know what to do with him. There’s no overpowering him. You have to have a technique when blocking Geathers. You have to get right up under him and give everything you’ve got to block him on that one play. That’ll wear you out eventually. Can they block him for 4 quarters? I doubt it.

Lack of flexibility, fatigue, or poor conditioning most like lead to these hammy issues. Big John is probably fatigued and tired, trying to hard at this point. Better off settling back to number two and being able to contribute. I’m sure if he’s healthy he sees plenty of field time.

I expect to see Boise come in well coached, conditioned and ready to play. I think we’re in for a long, hard fought night. If we don’t implode, i.e. play a smart game and don’t make to many mistakes we wear them out by the fourth quarter, I think.
I read they are really deep on the D line, so they can substitue frequently. I’m pulling a Larry and Vince. I’m more than a little worried. I’ve just seen to many poorly coached performances the last few years by Mark Richt teams. I think ball control and good defense win. I don’t think we come out well if we get into a scoring contest. I hope Samuels healthy, a big pounding running back will go miles to wear their D down.
If Richt plays his typical finesse style I think we end up shooting ourselves in the foot and lose this game. Physical play is the key to winning this game.

Guys, Boise will probably be the most talented team we will face this year. Please quit this crap about how light their lineman might be and from what conference they are from and who they play. I am sure that the UGA players and coaches are not taking them as lightly as are some UGA fans. If we can stay within a few points of them, it will be a victory of sorts. This is not the team we blew away a few years ago in Athens. They have been preparing for this game for quite some time, and return many more skilled players than UGA does. This game defines their season, as well as it does ours, but I am not nearly as confident of a UGA victory as many on these blogs are. I feel sure that I will be severely criticized for my opinion, but I am trying to be realistic, not dreaming as to what I want to happen. In other words, I don’t drink the cool-aid, but will if we should win this game. The next one is much more important because it is in the SEC East, and counts for more!

I don’t think Ryan understood Rabun Dawg’s post… Anyways. The reasons I am confident about the Boise game is 1) CMR is 9-1 in season openers (including games against Clemson 2x, Okie State, and Boise) 2) year 2 of the 3-4 is typically a massive improvement as the players finally “get it” 3) if you watch the games that Boise has beaten BCS teams, they jump out early on them and then wear down and happen to make a play at the end. If Oklahoma played the 1st quarter like the last 3, no contest. Same with VaTech last year. If Georgia avoids the early letdown, there is no way that Boise is more physically gifted than UGA. Zero chance, I don’t care who you say they are. Boise is winning recruiting battles with Wyoming and UGA is battling Alabama. Sorry… they have tons of heart, but at some point athleticism and talent HAS to take over. Yes, I know that Kellen Moore is talented. They lost their top 2 receivers and their OC. Unlike the SEC, it’s highly unlikely for the next in line to be just as good as the gold that was struck. Call me a homer. call me whatever. UGA wins by at least 10.

That 2010 VT team that went on to lose to James Madison in the 2nd game had *one* returning stater from 2009 on the DL, and he had started 8 games. Six returning starters on defense as a whole, and three of them had 5, 4 and 2 starts, respectively. They took Boise State to the wire in that loss.

Strength and Conditioning is just great, with Joe Tereshinski, II the same guy who previously was already on the Mark Richt Strength and Conditioning “coaching staff.” It is the only coaching staff change made following our 7-Loss Season, requiring us to go all the way back 58 years to 1953 to find a season in which our beloved Georgia Bulldogs Lost more football games in a season.
No less than 10 Bulldogs are out. Some just quit when he got promoted, and the rest have HAMSTRINGS.
Nice. Of course, they all are out the most crucial positions and all are our most relevant players. Not the least of which is every running back. We’ve gone through the whole entire camp with running backs trying to learn the position, unable to go at running back – to name just one really crucial position with MULTIPLE HAMSTRINGS on-going for quite some time – the whole entire camp. Just saying. A center in charge of strength and conditioning. One would have thought that with 10 cupcakes on this “schedule” 2011, that we would have been able to line-up and play our 1st String against Boise State little nobodies anyway. Now, we have to drink the Kool-Aid how none of them practicing is somehow, on-target, doing great and oh yeah would be starting here in a few minutes if we had a game this morning. Instead, they cannot even practice. What’s wrong with this picture ?
Speaking of picture, I don’t like the red pants, already.

I am a traditionalist and proud of it. I see no need to make fashion statements. Stick to our tradition, and play the game of football. There is just something about tradition, that binds fans with their school. I have this horrible vison of seeing UGA dressed in a uniform comparable to ones I saw Maryland wear last year in a game. They looked god awful. A combo of black, camo, sparkles and I am not sure, but I think I may have seen some tweed mixed in. Probably designed by “FUBU”….Please God no. Don’t let this happen…….

Groin and hamstring injuries mean these guys are overcooked and more than ready to play a real game of football. Enough of this practice crap, let’s do this. The pros know this and changed their NFLPA contract to make it so. They cut their full-padded practices in half. Too much practice on these modern athletes’ bodies is Russian roulette for injuries and detrimental to their potential careers. Ask the pros.

The unis are for Nike, not UGA. The money is for BSU and UGA, not the fans. Nike marketing knows what they are doing. Athens is correct–we outweigh their D line by almost 50 lbs per man. The problem is that we have outweighed other teams, like UCF, and that didn’t equate to dominance. We will just have to see how well their 260-280 lb ends can do–BSU nation is convinced they are All Americans. They could be blinding quick; I don’t know. I expect CMB to line up and see how well they handle a rock pounding, but he may come out and start gun-slingin’. I would think BSU would have a hard time defending both. On O BSU does have a great RB–very solid, and one of those guys a team can have a hard time tackling–like the Lattimore experience, and of course, Moore was a Heisman finalist, so his ability is already legend. Interestingly, nobody was able to get to Moore last year. A few sacks out of our fast LBs, or our big line could challenge him in a way he isn’t used to being challenged. BSU has a great running game, though, and that is what they will try to establish. Also, interesting is the fact that they feel their little D line is dominant, and will sack Murray all night, so our O line could be the key to the game. This one is really stacking up to be a great game. BSU is very well coached. I wouldn’t be surprised by a blowout on either side, but being an optimist, I like our chances. Some of the talking CFB heads aren’t even giving us a chance in this game or this season, so that may actually help the Dawgs…Go Dawgs.

The hamstrings and groins may not have much to do with S&C. They may be evidence of a lack of proper stretching. Unfortunately, a lot of coaches and players don’t understand how important stretching is. Takes a lot of valuable time they don’t have, but it pays dividends if done correctly.

One more point on Moore. He is shorter than Murray, ~20 lbs lighter, and he is slower than our D linemen, so our size and speed could be a factor. If he lacerates us and has a great year, it will certainly kill the argument that a QB can’t succeed without height, weight or speed. Moore has none, and he almost won the Heisman last year.

Tide Roll,
Heres a little tip for you, when you try and post on a nlog. Think before your fingers start typing everey once in a while. A versatile man on the line, as a backup is an asset, noy a liability. He gewts more playing time and also allows for multiple starters to get a rest break. Yes, UGA does have some experience depth problems, not unlike a lot of teams in football. A team can not alwaysw control injuries and academic failures. By having backups with multiple position talent, you can help to negate that problem. Now go back to your nintendo, in the basement and mom will call you up for breakfast. Leave the big boy talk to big boys, OK?

All these ostriches saying it ain’t so doesn’t make it not so. It is.
It is the easiest UGA schedule in many, many years. No reason not to win a championship.
Players are trying real hard. Great talent, great spirit to date.
Same old coaching problems. Richt has no energy for his team either on or off the field. He’s a great recruiter, but a lousy coach who uses ACC game strategies in the SEC.
Bobo is as predictable as the cycles of the moon each month.
The season boils down to coaching. I’m torn.
If the Dawgs have a good season, we’re saddled with Preacha Man even longer so every year will be full of anxiety and disappointment. If the Dawgs turtle again, it’s a sad day for us all but at least we will have the potential to get a real coach who is a leader and understands the SEC.
Hope is not a method.

By the way, Nike is probably paying each school about 300 grand to wear these uniforms for this game. The players make the uniform, not the other way around. I say, if it makes these kids happy to weat them, let them have at it. They are the ones doing all the work and representing UGA. If UGA does well this season, I would bet it will not matter what they played in as UGA folks will be too darn happy to care what uniforms they wore.

The depth at NG this year is superior to any year UGA has experienced in a long time. I know that the D changed last year and ND is the keystone to it all but UGA usually lacks the big bodies and Gathers and Jenkins and one other young man provide that. Additonally ABry Jones and DeAngelo Tyson do provide big size at D Ends, for a change.
This is good stuff and on paper, UGA is the best D team that we have seen in a very long while. I suspect that SC will run off tackle but will absolutely try and beat UGA with the long balls, early too.

As an old traditionalist Dawg fan, I prefer our standard game-day uniforms. BUT, I understand having to met our Nike contract requirements and the company’s imposed mandate of wearing their vision of UGA’s Pro Combat uniform for the Boise State game.
It doesn’t matter to ME how the players are outfitted as long as THEY like it and play an intensely focused and hard-fought game.
We fans just have to accept the fact that the change has been made for this nationally televised Kick-Off Classic; that Coach Richt didn’t make that decision and had no choice but to accept what Greg McGarity had to consent to from Nike; from what we read, the players have seemingly bought into, LIKE the change; and it won’t be a distraction to their play.
Let’s just hope they come out on both offense and defense with a GATA attitude and play four complete quarters like that. If so, I believe we’ll win.

I think the increase in practice injuries is equal to the increase in practice intensity and the increased emphasis on better prepared, stronger players. I don’t think it is anything unusual and only reflects the fact that the DAWGS are preparing seriously for this season. I would be concerned if no players were getting dinged up. Except for a backup safety, none of the injuries so far threaten to derail, the team or change the makeup of this team. Just ask Arkansas if they would trade a mild hamstring injury to their TB versus a leg injury that keeps him out for the season. Pre-season injuries are part of the game.

Let’s see our 3 biggest recruits are all out with injuries(I.C,Drew, and now Jenkins). Typical of how every bigtime recruit UGA gets has an injury that limits his play the first year. This program is snake bitten, and the football GODS certainly don’t look over this program. No other program in the SEC has the same bad luck UGA does when it comes to big time recruits and injuries. Without big contributions from I.C. Drew, and Jenkins, this will be another long season for UGA. Hell maybe Richt should just practice in shells the rest of preseason practice, because after the last scrimmage next week, UGA probably want have enough bodies to play Sept.3rd. Can you imagine how good this team would be and how deep it would be now if Benedict,Austin Long, Tanner Strickland,Dallas Lee(Hopefully he has asthma under control),T.J.Stripling,Burrows,the list goes on and on. Can only hope these latest 3 will be healthy when the season starts, but groins and hamstrings can be lingering injuries that can hamper a player all season. I’m afraid we want see the real break away speed and acceleration from I.C. until later in the season, my GOD look how long Boo has had his groin injury, and he still is having problems. The coaches can sugarcoat this all they want, but for the running backs to constantly have groin pulls and hamstring pulls all the time, then there is an issue with the old S&C tactics that this staff uses. S&C if done properly limits injuries, it doesn’t cause more injuries. Just another desperate move by Richt to put the entire team’s future in the hands of an over the hill S&C coach. How did it work out with Benedict? This guy could have been the best lineman UGA has signed since the Matt&John Stinch brothers. Hope i’m wrong, but the history of this staff when it comes to injuries doesn’t bode well.

We’ve all been told how much distance running the guys did on the track this summer, that probably didn’t leave a lot of time for change of direction drills. And since you do not run full speed during distance runs, you never open up your stride all the way. Hence, groin and hanstring injuries now that they are actually doing football type movements. You have to train the way you are going to play.

This “All World” Strength and Conditioning program geared to get the team in shape for the fourth quarter????? Let’s hope it allows the team to play well before the fourth quarter. There is no fool proof, injury proof conditioning system guaranteed to bring wins in the fourth quarter. The whole game counts.

Strength and Conditioning doesn’t have anything to do with Stretching ?
Say what ?

Boise State blogs are poor, at best. I went over there and tried to carry on a conversation. It is not possible. They do not want to hear, like so many blogs I have no respect for, what is the truth.
The truth very clearly is that with 15 Boise State in the NFL to our 45, Scout.com is correct with the last 5 recruiting classes averaging # 69 for Boise State and # 11 for Mark Richt.
Now, frankly it is true that Boise State plays a weak schedule; but, the real Truth, is that when they are not playing a weak scheduled team, they
LOSE.
31 games against the 6 BCS Conferences and Boise State has won exactly 8 games.
Every SEC team has always beat Boise State.
8-23 clearly shows the NFL and Scout.com Rivals are correct that Boise State is no match-up for UGA.
Boise State just needs to play more games like this one. Then, there would be no question about them. Look at them the last time they came here. The year before they had a 12-1 record with the same quarterback; the year after they had a 14-0 record with the same quarterback and we beat them by Five (5) Touchdowns with this same, said, quarterback.

COMCAST ISP. If you are getting garbage adding to your screen RedANDblackDawg, sir, what you need to do is to call comcast. They come to your home for free. They will run a test, replace connectors, check your speed, and fine tune the connection. Aren’t you paying them $150 a month like the rest of us ? Why ask us for what to do, when you obviously only have to call them. Some outlets are farther away from the splitter and are troublesome. They can re-route if that is your choice for where you want to use your PC. Their meter will tell them everything they need to know about your connection. Your connection is bad.

“The hamstrings and groins may not have much to do with S&C”
CHDawg, sir, half the team has hamstrings. Stretching is the 1st thing you do in Strength and Conditioning Training everywhere but here obviously, and the last thing you do in S and C everywhere but here obviously, and the 1st and last thing you do before and after every practice. This is poor coaching. And, please note that these are the very crucial players we are counting on to have spent this entire camp learning for the 1st time ever with no game experience. We have failed.
RED PANTS, yuk. One look at Oregon Ducks’ uni is all I needed to know that I didn’t want them to have the only say in what the uni looked like. You can stipulate in the Nike Contract that your helmet has the G, that your pants are silver and that your jersey is this color red. Their system can still be fully implemented as a uni.
I hate the uni. Totally hate it. The players did not say they love the red pants, what they like is the system that makes up the uni. Nike knows nothing about color combinations, nor would they in the least feel constrained to have us demand we have silver britches.

I read onpage 1 of this article some nutcase hater referring to the DAWGS as “Poodles”. Although an alum and a BULLDAWG fan for life, I take exception to the disrespect of our canine cousins. Poodles were bred as a working dog, very much in the manner of the hunting hounds that seem to be liked by most people. In the range of intelligence, they are second only to the Border Collie. If the intent by the haters is to sissify our team by reference to “poodles”, I submit that some other insult should be considered.
I personally own a poodle, and this being my second, they are great pets. And I am in no way suggesting we change our team name from BULLDAWGS.

I see where the entire LSU football team was in a bar fight and they sent people to the hospital – let’s see how Miles “disciplines” his team with less than two weeks to go before playing a top 5 team in the opener….our top receiver got sacked four games for selling his own jersey – what kind of a penalty will a bench clearing bar fight with injuries draw?

Thomas,
They have been out to my house four times in the last month and replaced every cable, and I have replaced the modem and the router. The problem is the lines leading up to the connection box at the end of the driveway. They will not fix them since they claim the problem is only intermittent. Living in a small community like I do, and having no other choices avaialble, I guess I am just stuck with it. We can’t even get ATT DSL here, but they will put in a phone line and over charge for phone service though.

I think they are just being uber sensitive to even minor injuries. Remember a few years ago, when we went balls out in practice and key players were injured. Scared CMR so bad they lost their edge, as they were no longer stickin’ in practice.
The pendulum has swung the other way, as we have resumed physical practices, but we’re just more sensitive to minor tweaks, and whatnot. Also, even thou those guys aren’t practicing, they’re still doin’ conditioning, just no fast twitch, or contact stuff. It’s a happy medium from the past 5 years of injuries and soft play.
Also, DT’s are notorious for getting gassed, nicked, and missing time in preseason. Big John might be fast for his size, but don’t get it twisted, his conditioning is not like T.O., or anything.
Also, I was impressed with BSU’s dominating the L.O.S. against VT last year, but by the end of the 3rd quarter, the did not have the depth, or the conditioning and almostr lost to VT. If that game went 5 more minutes, VT woulda pulled it out.
BSU has heart, but not the depth we have.. We should be able to put their top 2 centers in traction…….
