ATHENS – Neither Georgia nor tight end Orson Charles will face any NCAA repercussions with regard to Charles’ inclusion in the Yahoo! Sports report on a rogue Miami booster he is alleged to have met during recruiting.
So says UGA in a brief statement it released about the situation late Wednesday morning.
“The University of Georgia is aware of the article mentioning Orson Charles and has been in communication with the NCAA. There are no issues with UGA or eligibility issues with Orson Charles. UGA will have no further comment regarding this matter.”
Georgia contacted the NCAA shortly after the Yahoo! Sports report was published online late Tuesday. Charles, a junior from Tampa, was listed among recruits alleged to have had had impermissible contact with notorious booster Nevin Shapiro in 2008. The report said Charles, then a rising senior at Plant High, was taken to Shapiro’s home by a Miami assistant coach to be given a “recruiting pitch.” Charles signed with Georgia in February of 2009.
Shapiro, who confessed to providing benefits and services to dozens of Miami players and recruits, is incarcerated in Atlanta following his conviction on fraud charges connected to a $930 million Ponzi scheme.
Charles, a preseason All-SEC selection, is expected to be one of the Bulldogs’ main offensive weapons this season. He had 49 career receptions for 796 yards and five touchdowns.

It appears from Georgia’s press release that Orson Charles did nothing wrong. Translated that means UGA officials met with Charles and what he told them did not appear to be breaking NCAA rules.

Nothing could be finer, AJ Green notified UGA that he sold his jersey and they had reported it to the SEC back last June. There is something called chain of command. The school notifies the conference, then the conference notifies the NCAA. That is what happened here and the SEC didn’t think it was a violation because they determined the person who bought the jersey was not an agent. The NCAA however said he was an agent therefore up holding his suspension.

Nebraska runs to the slow 10 so their baseball team might have a chance to get an NCAA bid since the slow 10 only gets 1 bid per year. Nebraska somehow thinks that might get them to Omaha but they don’t realize that winning the slow 10 in baseball won’t help them compete against the best.
Their football team is now totally irrelevant in the Big 12 and big time afraid of Oklahoma and Okie state so they run to the weakest BCS conference in hopes of somehow becoming relevant somewhere somehow.
We won’t even bring up their basketball program.
The reality is that Creighton has better athletics than Nebraska even without D-1 football.

Why do people keep whining about Jan Kemp? She was given a settlement and deposited it in the bank; And she has kept her mouth shut since. So much for the morality of her issue. There are at least 20 Jan Kemps at UGA now and at every single NCAA, NJCAA or NAIA school. Collegiate sports are used to pay for higher faculty salaries, research, overseas studies, buildings/ institutes and more bureaucracy. It can’t all come from taxes and donations. Get over it!!! I mean really? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves and stick to football. In actual fact, what would Nebraska ever do without football or athletics in general? I think UGA would be on the same level academically. What about Nebraska? I don’t think so. For the past 3 years, the founders have this site have facilitated thousands of pages of dialog in an effort to eliminate CMR from the University of Georgia.
As we all know, Internet forums get “noisy” and people tend to lose focus on reality in an effort to “out-maneuver” one another.
We have decided to take a temporary vow of silence at FMR.net until August of 2011.
However, many of you are still conflicted and are not sure if CMR deserves more time.
We are simply asking each UGA fan to quietly reflect on 2010-2011 season. All of the answers are there.

From another AJC article on Shapiro and a Nebraska player: Former Nebraska defensive end Benard Thomas told The Associated Press he was on Shapiro’s yacht with two former Hurricanes players, Kellen Winslow Jr. and D.J. Williams, in 2005 when they had finished college.
“We all had money ourselves,” Thomas said. “We didn’t need anything from him.”
Thomas described Shapiro as “cool.”

Funniest thing about all this is that the ex-Miami AD who is involved in all of this was the guy at the NCAA who ruled Derrick Rose ineigible to play after the NCAA Clearinghouse cleared him to play.
He used the phrase “strict liability” to describe Memphis in dishing out the punishment.
Today on Twitter, John Calipari tweeted “strict liability”.

@SEC Football News APP:
“It appears from Georgia’s press release that Orson Charles did nothing wrong. Translated that means UGA officials met with Charles and what he told them did not appear to be breaking NCAA rules. ”
Sounds like the case, only problem is this is the same thing Tech did. yet NCAA said Tech did not cooperate because they talked to the players involved by fore NCAA ruled and were told by NCAA they could not talk to players. I don’t have any issue with what UGA did, just why would NCAA allow UGA to talk to their players yet when Tech talks they are slapped by NCAA.
Just saying because it comes accross like Tech is the only school not allowed to talk to their players in a case like this. UGA, UNC, Bama, Auburn, LSU in recent cases have all had internal investigations and spoke with player before NCAA ruled.
I get it, Tech players should not have taken the gifts, it was to borderline so I see issue there, but have yet to understand why Tech could not talk to players involved when it seems every other school does and I have yet to see NCAA code that states schools can’t talk to player under investigation.

A little more to it than that:
The NCAA vacated the final three games of the football team’s 2009 season – a loss to rival Georgia, the Atlantic Coast Conference championship win against Clemson and the Orange Bowl loss to Iowa – for using an ineligible player. It was the Yellow Jackets’ first season under coach Paul Johnson.
The NCAA said Georgia Tech should have declared receiver Demaryius Thomas ineligible after he accepted $312 worth of clothing in 2009 from former Yellow Jackets quarterback Calvin Booker, who was working for a sports agent at the time. But the investigation took a harder turn against the school when athletic director Dan Radakovich broke NCAA rules by alerting Johnson that Thomas and safety Morgan Burnett would soon be interviewed.
It seemed obvious to the NCAA that Thomas and Burnett were told to prepare answers to questions they would be asked during the interviews. In its 26-page report, the NCAA wrote that it decided not to make a finding of its interview with Burnett after he “consistently denied” accepting free clothing. The NCAA committee on infractions wrote, however, that a violation occurred in regard to Thomas.
“The staff members provided, before the NCAA could conduct their interview, information about what would be discussed in the interview,” NCAA committee on infractions chairman Dennis Thomas said. “These actions impeded the enforcement staff investigations and hindered the committee in getting to the truth in this case. Otherwise, this case, as it pertains to the football program, would have been limited to impermissible benefits and preferential treatment violations.”

I understand your despair, but if you read the NCAA response to Tech’s penalty, it was harsh because the NCAA felt like Tech was trying to cover it up. Need to point out also that the NCAA penalty vacating Georgia Tech’s final three games only had a negative effect on only one game ( Clemson), since Tech lost the other two games ( Georgia, Iowa ). Of course, it did cost them the ACC championship.

As much that has transpired on our campus since the Winter of 2010, I am on a wait and see approach to our season. The number of players that have graduated or finished their eligibility( a very big difference) , the premier players who have left school for the NFL draft, the dismissals, the transfers and now the injuries, we have a great deal to be skeptical about.
We should be better prepared on defense in Granthams second year. I did not say a better defense, but better prepared.
We should be a little less on offense due to losses of our best playmakers and injuries to our offensive linemen.
We should be better on special teams with our All Americans returning.
The difference is our schedule. We are very much in the best position on the schedule front. We do not play the big 3, LSU, Alabama and Arkansas, and we have the next best teams at home and at a neutral location( MSU, Auburn, Florida). Our sneak up games are Tennessee and Kentucky.
The Boise St. game will add pressure to us with USC up next. USC should be the preseason pick, they won it last year and have a great deal of talent returning. Until someone knocks them off then they deserve to keep the bullseye on their back and off ours.
OC may have been involved, but unless evidence is presented to the SEC and NCAA that indicates someone knowingly, and actively took benefits then it is another case of “he said, he said, she said”
Keep the bullseye off of us and let us try and sneak around early to build some momentum. If we go in a do not compete at our level the first two games then I will glad to jump on the firemarkricht.net bandwagon. But until then, unlike some of the other UGA graduates(like me) or sidewalk fans posting unflattering comments on here prediciting dominance, I will sit back and wait till kickoff in the dome and at home against USC in my 30 yard line seat that I have kept for the past 20 years.
Time to kick this off and to stop smack talking until we do something against a good team. Does anyone realize our last win against a winning team was practically over a season ago? Lets let our play on the field do our talking.
One more comment. If the numbnut who sits behind me at home games barks in my ear after the kickoff for the entire game, I am going to make sure he is unable to speak again all season. I paid hard earned money to enjoy the game and not hear some drunken so called fan bark the entire game.

One cannot tell if any player will be successful on the NFL level, let alone college. How many 1st round busts and 5 and 4 star busts are out there? If the draft was today, who gets drafted higher based off potential? Lutz or OC? C’mon, let’s look at this rationally. Me, personally, would prefer Lutz, because I like smash mouth play, but I could not deny OC. He has higher…”upside.” We all know the game about upside…lol. Lutz is already a finished product.

You also have to believe that Papa Cam was shopping Cam around and Cam knew nothing of it.
If Cam knew about it that makes him ineligible.
If you think he didn’t know you are a fool as well.
Either way the NCAA will have the final say.
Until then every Auburn fan will keep their head in the sand and pretend nothing is wrong while everyone else knows they cheated and the title isn’t legit.

I’m just curious as to how this is considered the same thing to some of you Uga haters as the Cam Newton drama? Cams father possibly accepted $180,000 for Cams commitment. Orson Charles was taken by a coach to meet someone and didn’t do ANYTHING other than MEET the guy. Kinda like comparing apples and oranges. I for one really don’t care about the Cam thing, its over and done with but sedriously how is it the same?? You guys are idiots!

I don’t care who gets paid. Can we pay someone $180,000 for a heisman and a NC please? These players deserve every brown bag and used cars they can get. After the Shapiro story, Yahoo Sports Dan Wetzel says that the Fiesta Bowl President was worse cause he lavished Conference Commisioners, AD’s, School Presidents, Governors, and other stakeholders with international flights, credit cards, cruises, etc. Burn them all for this modified slavery. That’s right, not modern day, but modified slavery for all the players, no race involved.

Im 37. It wont take nearly that long.
The NCAA doesnt get in a hurry when they have something as big as this and they have as much told Auburn the investigation goes on. That they arent through by a longshot.
Im guessing about the same amount of time as it took for the Reggie Bush thing.

Auburn:
What Auburn fans believe? That nothing was done illegally. That Although Cecil was shopping his son to three schools with coaches with histories of aiding players financially, that Auburn did not pay anyone anything.
Auburn fans believe that the grades changed in attempt to get players into school out of high school was the work of a high school guidance counselor and no one on their staff would ever do such a thing.
Auburn fans believe that one of their coaches is above reproach and all the rampant recruiting stories of his under the table deals with athletes and parents is all made up.
Auburn fans believe that Bobby Lowder was hands off the football program, and that all the tampering Lowder had done with Bowden, and Tuberville was made up.
Auburn fans believe that an overzealous professor overstepped his awareness and that players were actually doing all the work required for independent study classes.
Auburn fans believe the four football players who robbed fellow students in a trailer were just a couple of bad apples.
Auburn fans just a major different attitude about their program in comparison with 90 plus percent of the other college football fanbase.
The final item is this. The NCAA has Auburn in their cross hairs and if some Auburn graduate or fan does not believe it then they are not being real with themselves. Too many coaches, college adminstrators, high school coaches and officials have turned Auburn coaches and supporters in for violating rules minor and major.

Bobby Lowder has his own personal issues with legal issues revolving around his failed bank and the deal that Lee Farkas is now working on with the Feds to reduce his sentence. Add to that the employees of Colonial Bank who are sueing Bobby Lowder and have a court date next month. Bobby does not have time to work any deals. From what the local papers in and around Auburn are saying is the funding is now in place to funnel money for many years to come. Guess that happens when a bank misplaces over 60 million dollars in one fiscal year….footnoted in trial of Lee Farkas and available for review at Fedjudicial…

Marve is not the only Big Ten figure mentioned in that sweeping series of stories from Yahoo! Sports. Shapiro said former Nebraska defensive end Bernard Thomas, a friend of former Hurricanes player D.J. Williams, came down to Miami to party on his yacht in 2003. That would have been the summer before his senior year. The story contains a photo of Thomas on a boat with Miami players.
“I met Benard Thomas once, the day he came with us on an all-day boat trip,” Shapiro said. He was a friend of D.J. [Williams] from back when they both played high school football in California. I remember Benard telling me he played defensive end at Nebraska. It was on my boat, so I paid for everything. We had food and drinks and the usual things for that kind of trip.”
Thomas told Yahoo! that he believed he went on the yacht after his college career ended.

I’m glad he is cleared now, but don’t get to happy. The NCAA just began the investigation and will take thier sweet time as investigations usually take a year or two. You can bet that any recruit that visited Miami will get looked at and god only knows what the NCAA will do in the end. The NCAA is incompetent and needs to be replaced because there is no consistent punishment and they have no reall power over the people that cause it. The things coming out of Miami happen at all the big football schools and you all know it. Maybe not to this degree but it happens.

ATL87, You could go the last 20 and UGA is 10-9-1 against Auburn. How about when Tra Battle returned one of Brandon Cox’s 4 interceptions for a 30 yard TD in 2006. Or better yet, how about when Brandon Cox threw 4 more interceptions in 2007, or when Mohamed Massaquoi caught a 58 yard TD pass in the same game. I know that was a lot of fun for both of us right? How about the TD pass from Stafford to AJ Green in 2008, who could forget that one? Last but not least how about that 50 yard TD pass Israel Troupe caught in 2009. Wow, those were some fun times.

This story fills me with happiness for 2 reasons. First and most importantly the NCAA amazingly gets it right again and for the second time in weeks an innocent UGA player is found well innocent.
Secondly, the NCAA declares Orson Charles did nothing at all wrong before the ajc vultures could blow the story out of proportion and run a story heavy with inuendo 4 or 5 times with different headlines in their typical pathetic attempt to color UGA’s clean program dirty.
Dirty like the ajc’s neighbor ga tech who has been stripped of wins and a title. A story the ajc found barely worth mentioning and then only after the extreme penalties had been announced.

I and everyone here know any attempt you make to refute what I’ve said is just another of your sad pitiful little lies. Please seek help at a free clinic soon or perhaps use one of your disability checks to buy some prozac from one of those online pharmacies.

Trust me I am not judging and not only did GT recruit players that were being looked at by Miami GT took a LB Nick Menacol that had commited to Miami just before signing day.
BigdawgK,
If you really believe boosters don’t give players at UGA gifts then you are in serious denial. Every major program does it so don’t think UGA does not have skeletons in it’s closet. Not saying staff would be directly involved but it happens.

Nebraska,
Let me answer that for you. Why are UGA fans so bitter. Because fans of others schools come on these blogs and pretend their schools are super clean and a little research shows just the opposite. Didn’t Nebraska just self report this past week about a little matter (27 grand plus), of textbooks that inadvertently got into the hands of some student athletes? Much like a lot of your accusations, I guess those textbooks at nebraska had wings of their own. They just inadvertently landed in those athletes possession. So much for tha super clean program being run at your school.
The 2011 Fulmer cup standings show Nebraska with 4 points and UGA with “0″. Just a small point you might also ponder. What are those points for anyway?
Now you might understand why UGA folks are so bitter. People living in glass houses should not throw stones.

Using the Cam Newton logic, since Miami offered Charles money and prostitutes it’s clear that UGA must have offered more money and better looking hookers to get Charles to sign. That’s how it works, right?

F Fletch,
I am not bitter. Just tired of people coming onto blogs and making statements without factually backing it up or looking at their own team as well. Anybody that thinks their team doesn’t have a few problems with these young men occasionally, must go to either Oral Roberts U. or has it’s own university. I think Oral Roberts even got into hot water a few years ago with their basketball program.
It sounds like Charles was not guilty of anything but never the less, some blogger will come out with a statement saying he went to UGA and therefore he was paid better by UGA. No evidence, no facts that he can verify. Just a worthless statement said because they do not like UGA is all. When you question the integrity of another person or institution, you should have facts to back up what you say. UGA may not be a world beater all the time in sports but I do not believe that anybody can question the integrity of the of the football coach UGA has. I see people question his integrity, his religion and just about everything else about the man, but never any proof. Just baseless accusations, spouted by a hater of UGA, the UGA fans, the UGA players and even any journalist that has the nerve to write anything about UGA football, positive or other wise.
A little respect for the man and the university would go a long way. Do you really think the fellow from Nebraska adds anything with his comments about the UGA players from last year that got into trouble? Yes, they screwed up but there was not one felony amongst the trouble they got into to. No wife beating, no theft, no felony assault or battery. UGA gets beat up for the “Fulmer Cup”, for having a total of 21 points. Already this year, 2 teams have already exceeded that point total, and yet UGA has nothing. UGA however, has taken steps to correct the situation but you never see guys like him come onto this blog and say, that do you?
Every blog seems to deteriorate into a bunch of name calling and a lot of accusations that are unproven but stated as facts. I really don’t know if UGA fans on these blogs are so much bitter as they are just tired of hearing all this crap. They get that a lot of people do not care for UGA, and that is your right. Just use a little common sense, maturity and actual proved facts though, instead of half truths or your opinions about things that are not factually accurate.

@theevilone…..my one and only post…..REALLY? You’re comparing this Orson Charles investigation to Cam Newton, where it was reported 3 weeks ago on 680, that the NCAA even knows who the courier was that delivered the money to the Newtons. $200K to the Newtons and $30K to Cecil’s church. Nothing will be done b/c the NCAA has no authority to force this guy to testify, and he certainly won’t incriminate himself…..we’re (UGA and everyone else) over it, let’s focus on 2011.

Great points, RedandBlackDawg. Now, if you’ll just tell a large number of your fellow Dawg fans that the same applies to Auburn and Cam Newton maybe they will get a life. After all, there is the same proof that Newton did something wrong as there is that Charles did something wrong, which is no proof. Both players have been declared “Eligible” by the NCAA. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Bulldog59, no such thing was reported. What was reported was that one Alabama fan and grad, Danny Sheridan, CLAIMED to know this stuff. He’s since carried his foolishness on to the point that he’s totally discredited.
Learn to differentiate between reliable sources and false allegations. There is ZERO proof that Auburn and the Newton family did anything wrong. If the NCAA knew that cash had been delivered they wouldn’t need somebody to testify. The NCAA does not have to meet legal standards of proof.
Some of this stuff is hilarious! What did the courier do, deliver two bags, one marked “for Cecil” and one marked “for church”? Whatta’ hoot!

This thing has the potential to very ugly for both current and former players to include NFL players. ESPN is reporting that lawyers that are representing plaintiffs that lost money in the ponzi scheme are planning on trying to recover anything of value that was given to players. This means that that can be forced to testify in court. Nothing good could come from this

I don’t get it. I point out the obvious decline of the last few years of the UGA program while expressing my disappointment with this decline, and so many of you see this as an attack, then in return attack me. I pointed out the obvious that Nebraska has a better program than UGA. It happens. Michigan, Oklahoma and Texas have better programs than Nebraska over the years. You don’t see me calling them names.
Most UGA fans that I know, or are my friends never treat me this way when we discuss college football. Why do some of you feel so compelled to take the low road and prove your idiotic nature?
For the record, I have NOT attacked, insulted or made any personal derogatory remarks……. Until now. I assumed the massive girth on most of you meant you had thick skin. I guess not.

Aprilglaspie, Yahoo Sports is one of the more respected sports news outlets going today. Did you actually READ their article? Yahoo has named sources, with confirmation from secondary sources in every case. They have presented facts, none of this “where there’s smoke there’s fire” lunacy.
Thayer Evans, Joe Schadd and a number of others allege a single, un-named source that probably doesn’t exist in most of their writings. The guys at Yahoo did it the right way. They got the goods, not a bunch of well,,,, maybe,,,,stuff.

Mike P,
Thought that had pretty well stoped. Most of what I see now is the result of an Auburn fan, messing with UGA about something, and as a result, a UGA fan, responds with the Cam Newton stuff. There is no doubt, we all could be more civil towards each other, but that I guess is not going to happen. I guess you and I will just have to travel the upper road in this then, agreed?
Out of conference fans like this Nebraska though are going to be fair game, if he makes accusations and then tries to act like Nebraska is always a clean program. His accusations were actually suppositions where Nebraska’s NCAA problems are well documented. We all know that no NCAA school, no matter the conference, is going to be lilly clean all of the time, when it comes to trying to follow all the rules they have in place for athletes. One day, hopefully, they will moderize their rulebook and realize that some of the rules they have in place do not make sense.
