ATHENS – Neither Georgia nor tight end Orson Charles will face any NCAA repercussions with regard to Charles’ inclusion in the Yahoo! Sports report on a rogue Miami booster he is alleged to have met during recruiting.
So says UGA in a brief statement it released about the situation late Wednesday morning.
“The University of Georgia is aware of the article mentioning Orson Charles and has been in communication with the NCAA. There are no issues with UGA or eligibility issues with Orson Charles. UGA will have no further comment regarding this matter.”
Georgia contacted the NCAA shortly after the Yahoo! Sports report was published online late Tuesday. Charles, a junior from Tampa, was listed among recruits alleged to have had had impermissible contact with notorious booster Nevin Shapiro in 2008. The report said Charles, then a rising senior at Plant High, was taken to Shapiro’s home by a Miami assistant coach to be given a “recruiting pitch.” Charles signed with Georgia in February of 2009.
Shapiro, who confessed to providing benefits and services to dozens of Miami players and recruits, is incarcerated in Atlanta following his conviction on fraud charges connected to a $930 million Ponzi scheme.
Charles, a preseason All-SEC selection, is expected to be one of the Bulldogs’ main offensive weapons this season. He had 49 career receptions for 796 yards and five touchdowns.

@Just making up reasons why UGA should win… No sir, I am not proud of that, but I would be called a hater, even from fans of my alma mater (UGA), if I said fire CMR everyday. He deserves one more shot to right this ship. I think his support among the fans is about 50/50 right now. 9-3, 10-2, and 8-4 records are ok if we would have at least played in the title game by now. UGA has the potential to do a lot more than hope to win the SEC East in a down year.

For the past 3 years, the founders have this site have facilitated thousands of pages of dialog in an effort to eliminate CMR from the University of Georgia.
As we all know, Internet forums get “noisy” and people tend to lose focus on reality in an effort to “out-maneuver” one another.
We have decided to take a temporary vow of silence at FMR.net until August of 2011.
However, many of you are still conflicted and are not sure if CMR deserves more time.
We are simply asking each UGA fan to quietly reflect on 2010-2011 season. All of the answers are there.

The guy was a Bernie Madoff Mini-me. Checkered? The guy has gone plaid. You lose all credibility when you lie to the tune of $1 Billion.
Ask the people he stole from about his credibility.

At least this time the man is in jail one way or another. Why so much hate for UGA? You morons are not students or athletes. Why don’t you do something positive with all that pent up hate? Take those klan robes to the cleaners. Or just go away maybe to the Ice Pole.

From another AJC article on Shapiro and a Nebraska player: Former Nebraska defensive end Benard Thomas told The Associated Press he was on Shapiro’s yacht with two former Hurricanes players, Kellen Winslow Jr. and D.J. Williams, in 2005 when they had finished college.
“We all had money ourselves,” Thomas said. “We didn’t need anything from him.”
Thomas described Shapiro as “cool.”

Funniest thing about all this is that the ex-Miami AD who is involved in all of this was the guy at the NCAA who ruled Derrick Rose ineigible to play after the NCAA Clearinghouse cleared him to play.
He used the phrase “strict liability” to describe Memphis in dishing out the punishment.
Today on Twitter, John Calipari tweeted “strict liability”.
How ironic.

I find it interestng that two of Miamis coaches involved are now at Univ. Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Al Betar the next Shapiro?
But bama does their illegal rcruiting a little different. Instead of bribing the kids they bribe the parents (Cryus Ks parents, peaches, geno Smiths mom).
The funny thing is Bama since Bear died ending their stranglehold on NCAA rules, thye have been owned by AU. LOL!

Not so fast my fellow UGA fans! What you haven’t heard or what is not being reported is that Shapiro hasn’t produced the evidence that Charles received impermissible benefits. As soon as the evidence comes forward UGA must suspend him and will likely forfeit all games he has played in. Let’s hope this dude doesn’t.

See, I told our AD that we should do the same thing. Alert the NCAA, tell them what we know and ask them what they would like us to do or provide…………….But noooooooooooooooooo, he’s tells me, you just cook the fish and coach and keep racking up those huge rushing stats and let take care of the NCAA. Now, here we go, 100K poorer, can’t afford fresh fish and four years probation. My big ole butt will probably be back in AA by then anyway.

Hey, good for him. I would hate to see anything the Hurricons do bring someone down, regardless of whether they play for you guys or not.
To be honest, the death penalty for Miami might actually help the repuation of the school. Would anyone here have guessed that Miami is a highly regarded, very competitive private school based on their athletic department?? I sure didn’t when I first heard of the U as a wee lad.
