Georgia TE Orson Charles cleared by NCAA on Miami matter

ATHENS – Neither Georgia nor tight end Orson Charles will face any NCAA repercussions with regard to Charles’ inclusion in the Yahoo! Sports report on a rogue Miami booster he is alleged to have met during recruiting.

So says UGA in a brief statement it released about the situation late Wednesday morning.

“The University of Georgia is aware of the article mentioning Orson Charles and has been in communication with the NCAA. There are no issues with UGA or eligibility issues with Orson Charles. UGA will have no further comment regarding this matter.”

Georgia contacted the NCAA shortly after the Yahoo! Sports report was published online late Tuesday. Charles, a junior from Tampa, was listed among recruits alleged to have had had impermissible contact with notorious booster Nevin Shapiro in 2008. The report said Charles, then a rising senior at Plant High, was taken to Shapiro’s home by a Miami assistant coach to be given a “recruiting pitch.” Charles signed with Georgia in February of 2009.

Shapiro, who confessed to providing benefits and services to dozens of Miami players and recruits, is incarcerated in Atlanta following his conviction on fraud charges connected to a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

Charles, a preseason All-SEC selection, is expected to be one of the Bulldogs’ main offensive weapons this season. He had 49 career receptions for 796 yards and five touchdowns.

Again with the Lawrence Phillips reference……Over 15 years ago too.

I’m fine with Bubba Starling leaving…..Do you blame him? He can play until he is 40 and still be able to walk. Can’t say the same with football.

A miami assistant coach says “boys…hop in the car… we are going on a field trip” They drive the recruits to this guys house….he makes his pitch…. It’s the Miami assistant who is at fault and the program is comming down for it. But OC… Just was doing what he was told by the recruiter and did nothing wrong.

OVER – and as Chip said himself, he should have never reported it until he had the full story…

Orson did nothing wrong. He was taken to the guys box on a recruiting visit and to his house by one of the coaches. I will tell you this having dealt with the NCAA the coaches that have introduced these recruits, players, etc. will all have some trouble coming their way.

I am glad for the Royals in that case. Nebraska can very easily find another Starling. The Royals had to sign th ekid since he was in the backyard. Smart move for the Royals. I liked Bo’s line, “If I knew it was going to be the last time I talked to him I might have said something better.” or somehting along those lines.

Nebraska is a storied football program (not just in the mind of their fans, but nationally) and is a well respected research school (unlike tUGA), so mutts should keep their mouths shut about any of the good schools, someone might ask you how many points a 3 pointer is worth or if you’ve got Jan Kemp on speed dial (got that from the Tech blog).

Nothing could be finer, AJ Green notified UGA that he sold his jersey and they had reported it to the SEC back last June. There is something called chain of command. The school notifies the conference, then the conference notifies the NCAA. That is what happened here and the SEC didn’t think it was a violation because they determined the person who bought the jersey was not an agent. The NCAA however said he was an agent therefore up holding his suspension.

SEE!,,,this is why people around the league just have less and less respect for UGA fans.

What you should have said is ” Great New! Now we can move on and prove to others and ourselves that our program is turning around. We have gotten rid of malcontents, trouble makers and we are putting all the bad issues behind us”

17-3 how does it feel to be a Tech fan living vicariously through Florida? You outed yourself with the Jan Kemp reference. Only Tech fans bring up Jan Kemp. Guess what Jan Kemp received a nice pay out and never said another word. Honestly if you knew more about it you would also know she was not completely accurate.

Why would Orson Charles talk money with Miami and then sign with Georgia for free?

It’s clear Georgia must have paid him more, right?

Isn’t that the logic you guys used for the last year?

Another thing I mentioned some time ago is the level of academics at Nebraska vs UGA. Nebraska leads the nation in academic all americans overall, and in football. UGA is high up on that list as well, but in recent times has not produced the numbers they used to.

I’m not a hater of the UGA program. I am disappointed it has hit hard times, and really disappointed that some, not all of their fans behave the way they do.

Nebraska runs to the slow 10 so their baseball team might have a chance to get an NCAA bid since the slow 10 only gets 1 bid per year. Nebraska somehow thinks that might get them to Omaha but they don’t realize that winning the slow 10 in baseball won’t help them compete against the best.

Their football team is now totally irrelevant in the Big 12 and big time afraid of Oklahoma and Okie state so they run to the weakest BCS conference in hopes of somehow becoming relevant somewhere somehow.

We won’t even bring up their basketball program.

The reality is that Creighton has better athletics than Nebraska even without D-1 football.

Let me repost my comments about Jan Kemp:

Why do people keep whining about Jan Kemp? She was given a settlement and deposited it in the bank; And she has kept her mouth shut since. So much for the morality of her issue. There are at least 20 Jan Kemps at UGA now and at every single NCAA, NJCAA or NAIA school. Collegiate sports are used to pay for higher faculty salaries, research, overseas studies, buildings/ institutes and more bureaucracy. It can’t all come from taxes and donations. Get over it!!! Real Talk!!!

Pretty sure a Gator fan would know its 18-3 not 17-3. It’s pretty pathetic that Yech fans pose as another fan base to take shots at UGA. UGA fans are fully aware of the last 21 years against the Gators. They own us lately. 17-3 should change his name to 1-9.

I think a UGA graduate stands a better chance of getting that last spot on a job than a Nebraska grad. Let’s look purely at academics. Do you really believe Nebraska has better academics than UGA? I mean really? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves and stick to football. In actual fact, what would Nebraska ever do without football or athletics in general? I think UGA would be on the same level academically. What about Nebraska? I don’t think so. I’m not dissing the school as a bad school but comparing Nebraska to UGA academically is like comparing UCLA to Berkley: An excellent school but just a step below.

This is not a diss to you personally, but here is my feeling: Why, if a person has a “checkered” past, does everyone assume the person has credibility issues? Let me tell you something from my experience, both as a veteran and a civilian. The most honest, patriotic people will lie, cheat, and steal to maintain the status quo. Real Talk. Problem is, it’s legal for them to do so. Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr., and Obama don’t have felonies, but is there any doubt they are liars? You already know the answer.

Just making up reasons…..the last “championship” uGA won was a joke. THEY PLAYED NOBODY. The opponents win percentage was in the 400s. The 1980 championship rates up their with BYUs and Techs 1990 title in which the bast team they beat had 4 losses.

Seriously, go back and look at the 1980 schedule. It was BAD.

He certainly did. Remedial studies and a free motor scooter, and Mark Richt will bail him out of jail every time he gets arrested.
