Georgia TE Orson Charles cleared by NCAA on Miami matter

ATHENS – Neither Georgia nor tight end Orson Charles will face any NCAA repercussions with regard to Charles’ inclusion in the Yahoo! Sports report on a rogue Miami booster he is alleged to have met during recruiting.

So says UGA in a brief statement it released about the situation late Wednesday morning.

“The University of Georgia is aware of the article mentioning Orson Charles and has been in communication with the NCAA. There are no issues with UGA or eligibility issues with Orson Charles. UGA will have no further comment regarding this matter.”

Georgia contacted the NCAA shortly after the Yahoo! Sports report was published online late Tuesday. Charles, a junior from Tampa, was listed among recruits alleged to have had had impermissible contact with notorious booster Nevin Shapiro in 2008. The report said Charles, then a rising senior at Plant High, was taken to Shapiro’s home by a Miami assistant coach to be given a “recruiting pitch.” Charles signed with Georgia in February of 2009.

Shapiro, who confessed to providing benefits and services to dozens of Miami players and recruits, is incarcerated in Atlanta following his conviction on fraud charges connected to a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

Charles, a preseason All-SEC selection, is expected to be one of the Bulldogs’ main offensive weapons this season. He had 49 career receptions for 796 yards and five touchdowns.

So why did Orson Charles choose UGA over Miami? Maybe he got a better deal here?

Good.

Same as Auburn / Cam Newton situation, like Auburn should not be hit for what went on at Miss St, UGA should not be hit for what Miami folks did.

The stuff that went on at Miami goes on at a LOT of schools (but probably not to that extent). Some get caught, some don’t. Wonder where Shockley got the $$ for his Cady SUV?

The NCAA must have it’s head on a swivel as daily programs are coming under fire… Hopefully the Good programs that run clean (or as clean as possible) will start winning and keep winning without having to cheat or with rogue Alumni/Boosters that feel they need to do the $100 handshake.

Why is it that every single post I’ve made calling out the uga faithful’s double standard on this situation compared to their “logic” about Cam Newton and Auburn has been deleted???? Do you uga fans not feel the least bit ashamed of yourselves this morning?? Are ya finished using that logic to try and convict Cam Newton and Auburn now that you’ve completely disregarded that same logic in your little “situation” here????????

Shapiro was mad b/c he spent millions on the “U” and the players and went he went down no one helped him. So out of revenge he is taking it out on the University. Read the report and he mixes no bones about why he is doing it.

As I stated several times before, I feel bad for your program. Admit it. At one time, not too long ago, UGA was a top notch program with little to no off field problems. As a fan of the sport, I find it sad that this program is on hard time.

I’ve never made it personal, you all have. I just point out the obvious, then get treated poorly. So much for southern hospitality. Stuff like this rarely happens in Nebraska.

I guess stuff like this doesn’t happen in Nebraska when you have a corrupt senator (Ben Nelson) stalling legislation for the entire country so Nebraskans can get more welfare benefits and “entitlements.”

First of all your headline is not accurate. Orson Charles has not been cleared by the NCAA. They don’t do anything that fast.

It appears from Georgia’s press release that Orson Charles did nothing wrong. Translated that means UGA officials met with Charles and what he told them did not appear to be breaking NCAA rules.

For now, it appears this issue is put to rest. But its not closed.

Hey Nebraska, did you or didn’t you have a running back that was accused of beating up his girlfriend? Did you or didn’t you have a defensive tackle who had 8 count them 8 run in’s with the law while he was at Nebraska? Fourtnatly for Christian he was only convicted on 4 of them.

How about Andy Christensen, arrested for sexual assualt, Niles Paul-DUI, Justin Jackson-DUI, Baker Steinkuhler- DUI. How about the Grixby brothers also. What about the full blown academic scandal??

Mr Shapiro says that he has proof and has turned that over to Yahoo Sports. I believe that at this time there is no proof that Mr Charles did any thing wrong, but if down the road proof is uncovered the university will have to suspend him from playing. This is ongoing and the shoe may drop later as the proof is turned over to the NCAA!
