FS Jakar Hamilton out for season, TBs out for scrimmage

ATHENS – Georgia has likely lost free safety Jakar Hamilton for the season.

Hamilton

Hamilton

The senior, who started five games last season and played in all 13, was diagnosed Wednesday with a stress fracture in his right ankle. Since it will require two to three months to heal, “my guess is he won’t play this year,” coach Mark Richt said.

Hamilton has been sidelined since the beginning of preseason camp with a hamstring pull. Richt wasn’t sure if Hamilton had suffered a new injury but said it required a bone scan to detect Hamilton’s fracture.

Hamilton will be able to redshirt. He transferred to UGA from Georgia Military College last year.

Meanwhile, junior Shawn Williams appears to have locked down the starting job at free safety. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound graduate of Early County High continues to draw praise daily for his good work in practice. He was second among defenders with seven tackles in Wednesday’s scrimmage.

Junior Sanders Commings and freshman Corey Moore will provide depth.

Richt on TE Orson Charles

Richt said he was fairly confident Orson Charles would not face eligibility issues in the wake of his inclusion in the Yahoo! Sports report on a rogue booster at Miami.

“I wouldn’t say I didn’t get too concerned about it, but I didn’t think about it a lot or dwell on it much,” Richt said after Wednesday’s practice. “I felt like it was something I couldn’t control and until I heard one way or another I was just going to move forward as if everything was going to be OK.”

Charles, a junior tight end and preseason All-SEC selection, was among dozens of athletes listed in a Yahoo! Sports story who allegedly had interactions with convicted felon Nevin Shapiro. Shapiro claims to have provided millions of dollars worth of improper benefits and services to former Miami players and recruits from 2002-2010.

Richt mum about Miami troubles

Richt is a Miami alum and football lettermen, but he was very measured in what he said about his alma mater’s problems.

“I haven’t read the report but I’ve been hearing about it,” he said. “It just sounded pretty dramatic, I guess would be a good word for it.”

Richt said he heard a brief radio report on Miami while driving to the Athens Holiday Inn to speak to the Rotary Club.

“I’m not one to throw stones because I know the bottom line is it’s hard to be perfect,” Richt said. “So, we’re just trying like mad to do things right.”

Crowell, Samuel miss scrimmage

Georgia conducted its second controlled scrimmage of the preseason on Wednesday at Sanford Stadium and it did so without its top two tailbacks.

Isaiah Crowell (pulled groin) and Richard Samuel (strained quad) were unable to participate due to injuries. Former walkon Brandon Harton (12 carries, 51 yards) and redshirt freshman Ken Malcome (5-10) filled in on the first team instead.

Richt said he’s not overly concerned about the running backs missing time at this point.

“I’m not too concerned now,” he said. “If they get to the two weeks prior to the game, I don’t think it will be took problematic.”

Richt said Crowell could return as early as Friday but Samuel will likely be next week.

Scrimmage standouts

Quarterback Aaron Murray was 11-of-16 for 108 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Backup Hutson Mason was 13-of-27 for 125 yards with no TDs or interceptions.

Rantavious Wooten led all receivers with 61 yards on five catches and a touchdown and Israel Troupe added five catches for 50 yards. Malcolm Mitchell had three for 37.

As he did in the first scrimmage, linebacker Alec Ogletree led all tacklers with eight. He also had a sack and a pass breakup. Bacarri Rambo and Jordan Love added six apience and Jarvis Jones had five and a sack. Rambo also had an interception.

Richt said there were no injuries but that center Ben Jones suffered from cramping, likely because he had a one-hour aerobics class earlier in the day.

Picture Day on Saturday

UGA’s annual Fans’ Picture Day is Saturday in the Reed Plaza area of Sanford Stadium. Due to recent NCAA issues raised over the sell and trade of autographed memorabilia, fans will not be able to bring any outside items to be signed. The only thing UGA will permit to be signed is schedule posters. A limit of two per person will be provided.

Gates will open at 1 p.m. Head coach Mark Richt and players will be available at 3 p.m. Special ticket coupons are required for access to Richt and bulldog mascot. Those tickets will be distributed to the first 150 fans at 8 a.m. from the East End ticket windows on East Campus Road. All other teams will be available at 1.

Tough luck on Hamilton, but unfortunately he really had a hard time last year in coverage. The depth I am sure though will be missed.

Sad thing is that it only takes one rogue booster and one overzealous assistant coach to bring a whole program down. The more you hear about these things, the more you have to admire the coaches that do things the right way.

Darn, I hate to see these young kids get injured. It has got to be a disapointment to them, and it does hurt team depth. We sure need to get our two RB’s healed and on the practice field, but it sounds like at least Crowell should be according to earlier reports. Hopefully Samuel will be ready to go by next week as well.

Brandon Harton (12 carries, 51 yards) @ 4.25 yds per carry wasn’t too shabby.

And glad to see Ken Malcome running a little bit, too. Hope he’s getting better! We might really need Boo running hard in the Dome against Boise State.

Any nuggets about the OL holding their positions, and if the DL is busting through? And how are these two lines holding up?

Well said and we do appreciate our coaching staff’s efforts to play and do it the right way, inspite of the usual vitreol spewn by UGA haters.

Coach Richt said he was not, at this time, going to ban scooters. Maybe not, but he should stress to all players that they have to be responsible for their actions, and the reasons they are on the Bulldog team. Anything that detracts from that mission just won’t cut it. Seems like every year there are some who get hurt in practive or because of some freak accident that breaks up what should have been a good starting team for the year. Got some again this year. Maybe things will jell quickly.

The more I read about the Bulldogs and college football in general its enough to make your hair fall out or turn gray. CMR must lay in bed at night praying or staring at the ceiling and wondering what next. If its not injuries or misconduct, its revelations of another program going up in flames, ala his alma mater Miami Hurricanes. I know the pay is good but how many of us would really want to put our fate in the hands of a bunch of kids going away from home for the first time and trying to get them to focus and stay straight? Then you get to go to every Rotary Club and Touchdown Club in the state and explain to all the self proclaimed football experts what is about to happen to their team in the next 4 months! Let the games begin!!!!!

While several injuries or injuries to key players can be a concern, I think the big difference between now and last year is that injuries are about the only thing that could be considered a distraction from preparing. Not only did UGA have injuries last year but the off-field disciplinary issues and lack of proper conditioning wreaked havoc during camp.

From what it appears, the behavior has been kept in check and conditioning is much better. Every team deals with injuries so the key is to have enough people in good physical condition to step in and step up. Just at least get either Samuel or Crowell ready for the home opener because you need to establish a running game.

I would say maybe the only other thing to do is adjust the governors on all the scooters owned by players to keep them in first gear!

No they don’t want to be informed. They want to wait until the season starts and some reporter ambushes CMR at a press conference about OC and the Miami issue. Then whine about why they were not told this before. They want to wait until game 3, only to notice that Jakar has not played a down yet. “Why isn’t a SR. safety playing?” after the 5th blown coverage…lol. They want to wait to know that a bad start for CMR may be bad for him after the season, but the Athletic Dept. has secretly discussed such a thing. Then claim to be blind sided by the decision. They want to wait to know why IC only had 10 carries against Boise, without the knowledge that a groin injury during the first camp for a freshmen is a set back.

It doesn’t seem we get enough news on a regular basis to me. Some days “rarely lately” the blog topics change a couple of times a day, sometime we go several days with no change or maybe an update. At this point in the season it would seem there would be a multitude of things to talk about.

@Mobile Dawg… Easy answer. Every single D1 university is busy covering their tracks and tying up loose ends. If the season could start Saturday, it would, camp be damned. Everybody, and I mean everybody, has dirt. Why talk about a player one week and he may be suspended or ineligible next week? No one wants to put his/her foot in their mouths, like E. Gordon Gee…lol.

Thank you sir for writing a non biased, jerk filled, comment. They should restrict the speed at which the players are driving the scooters. It sounds to me like Drew was going too fast. You mean to tell me, the NCAA does not allow athletes to live in an athletic dorm and/or near the athletic complex? Gee, I wonder why agents can get access to a kid without anyone at the school knowing. These people think they have everyone fooled. They created a rule that, on the face of it, makes the athletes appear to be like any other student, but on the other hand are more susceptible to injury and influence. So if these are student-athletes are indeed students first, then why can’t an agent, like a job recruiter, recruit them for a possible job after they leave the university? hhhmmmmm

Sorry to hear about Hamilton. I was also critical of his play last year and I hope he can come back from this and contribute in a big way next year.

On a brighter note: I am very happy to hear in previous articles about the great play of Abry Jones, Marlon Brown, Shawn Williams continues to draw raves for his improved playing and also Branden Smith at corner as well as the first team offensive line and Dallas Lee and some of the other backups.

These are many of the players that we needed to step up and improve this year, so it is great to hear the coaches talk about their improved play.

I have been checking out the Boise Sports page and there is rarely ANY real info on the Boise State team. Only positive articles like (RB named to this pre-season watch list) or team ranked 4th by Sports Illustrated the only hint of negativity is something like OL overcomes prior problems in HS to be an angel once he steps on Boise campus.. I’m sure it is just a case of it not being reported to the public, but if not this has to be the Shangri La of college football. Not a single missed class, or even a sports or non-sports injury of ANY kind is discussed. Not a single hammy, turned ankle or even general soreness is reported. There are no players that are an academic concern, there are none that missed a punishement run or even were assigned a punishment run because team rules are NEVER broken. There are no depth problems, no attitude problems, nobody is transferring. They are like Stepford football players?

Miami knew about this booster. This wasn’t some middle aged guy who blended in and ran under the radar and gave out $100 handshakes that nobody knew about. This guy had at least one scheduled meeting in the President of the school’s office. He had a suite at the stadium and asked if he could install a stripper pole (red flag?)… now the request was turned down, but apparently the suite was like Sodom and Gommora every Saturday. This guy lead the team on the field and as few as 6 basketball and football assistants were in on it and as many as 7.

Hellen Keller would have known what was going, so I don’t buy that this was something that a rogue booster did and it was impossible to stop. Sometimes, that is the case.. not here.

I know this is football, so I’ll move on after this, but Canada’s economy is on fire. They lowered their corporate rate to 18% and it will drop to 16.9 % in January, and they are booming. Yes, revenues HAVE INCREASED and unemployment has greatly dropped. They don’t have a lot of the class warfare issues we have. Sorry folks sitting at home blaming rich folks and you oew me. How is it an “entitlement” when it is our money? Both parties and all of their leaders don’t give a rats a%$ about you, me, the tea party, jobs, etc… All members of Congress, the Senate, and most high-level government employees are receiving “public” health benefits. Why can’t the public, the very people who fund these same benefits, have a public option? Instead of cutting domestic spending first, bring the troops home!!! We can defend the homeland from….home. Why do 536 of the smartest people in the country produce a rational, logical, result on anything? These folks haven’t passed a budget since Obama became president. So, I guess all the government accountants are just dotting I’s and crossing T’s. None of them deserve 4 years of anything. NOT ONE. When human beings wake up and realize you can govern yourself and you don’t need a daddy, then we will have a better world.

Jerry Jones is working harder to expand his luxury suites. Arthur Blank is going to find a way to make you, the average citizen, pass a bond referendum to help fund his new stadium. But most of our children are being crammed into a trailer outside, overwhelming teachers. I’m not into taxing the rich to death. The finances of this nation are clearly being mishandled and misappropriated. Look at the HOPE Scholarship. Do you really think they are running out of money? The money is being used for things other than education, plain and simple. The two heads of the retirement fund for the state merit system make more in base salary than Michael Adams. Why? @slydog that 11% did create a lot of jobs for the Irish, but in many cases their work ethic got in the way. In another life I worked very closely with a Irish call center and lets just say their attendance rates ran them out of business. I have a great idea lower corporate tax rates here to 18% here with a 5 year flyer is jobs go up it becomes permanent and if not we raise it.

My comment somehow disappeared. Anyway, here is a suggestion: Allow all workers under 30 to elect out of being taxed for SS and medicare. This will increase their spending power by 20-30%. More spending means more demand, which means job creation. The number one goal of any business is a profit, not creating jobs. There is not one business school that teaches the principles of job creation…hahahha. If UPS closed it’s doors tomorrow, would one investor or shareholder miss a mortgage or rent payment, a meal, gas, etc? No. What about the salaried or hourly employees? You bey your life. But somehow, the “shareholders”, they need more spending money to do what with? Save it and keep collecting interest. And you know it. Increase spending power and all revenues will raise across the board. And everyone knows it because its common sense.

Lowcountry Bulldawg, why does everybody have to reach at the very bottom of the barrel for a few bad apples. So, is everybody on welfare and those receiving foodstamps have 5 and six kids, pay subsidized housing rates, and drive SUV’s? Everybody in the projects balling out of control? They just sit at home all day and somehow come up with the $500-600 car note for that same SUV? C’mon man. Most of those folks don’t even have cars. So does one swindler mean they are all swindler’s? My suggestion: If you accept public assistance, it is only good for 24 months.Period. However, that is unrealistic in a capitalistic economy. There will never be enough chairs for everyone to sit down once the music stops.

3. Cut all deprecation schedules in half
4. Open up all oil lands and waters for energy
5. task force to find and kill the 300 billion a year in medicare/medicaid fraud
6. Reduce military involvement in all conflicts to just advisory and air support
7. Review regulations on banks to get them loaning money again.

Both unhurtthen but we got the message …………….they can either be fun or dangerous.

Crashing a bike happens to us all. Ask Gary Bussy who won an OSCAR. It has nada to do with UGA athletes or their IQs or the school, or what their major is, or anything but being careless and sort of reckless.

Nate Potter is Lindy’s #1 OT, Kellen Moore is #2 QB, Doug Martin #14 RB. NFLDraftScout.com has Martin rated #2 RB out of 162; projected 3rd or 4th round. 40 Time: 4.48 40 Low: 4.38 40 High: 4.58

Boise St. defense vs. VT in 2010 (2011 starters only)

DE McClellin 6 tackles, 4 TFL, 2.5 S
DT Winn 5 Tackles, 1.5 TFL, 0.5 S, 1 fumble recovery
LB Tevis 6 tackles, 1 TFL
LB Smith 4 tackles
S Iloka 4 tackles
DE Crawford 1 tackle
S Stanaway 1 tackle
CB Taylor 3 tackles
DT Baker 1 tackle

VT was not playing up to expectations early in the year (lost to JMU the next week). These stats simply reflect what the defensive players on Boise State’s team accomplished against a decent-size opponent.

To put that win by Boise St. over VT in the proper context, here is part of my preseason assessment of VT. The whole post is too long to repeat here, but this final paragraph pretty much tells the story regarding their defense going into the 2010 season:

“Defensive players with starts in 2009 include the following players:
LB Barquell Rivers (13)
CB Rashad Carmichael (13)
DT John Graves (8)
LB Lyndell Rivers (5)
ROV Davon Morgan (4)
CB Cris Hill (2)

This defense has a major challenge ahead for Virginia Tech to end up the season in the Top 10.”

I feel the need to look ahead, since some Carolina fans are on the blog today. From a late June post by me:

“Here’s my early take on South Carolina:
This game is going to be tough going in the trenches for both teams. S. Carolina has a very good DL, with 3 starters returning plus the addition of Clowney. Their OL has 3 starters returning, plus a guard who started 1 game last season. They have 2 backups with significant experience (JR and SR lettermen). Georgia now has Jenkins and Geathers to rotate inside, and I suspect Drew will see considerable action at a rush end position.

“S. Carolina has 3 returning starters in the DB including Stephon Gilmore. A returning MLB starter, and two returning starters at the Spur position. With the exception of Gilmore, probably a push with the DBs/LBs with Georgia talent.

“The presence of Lattimore and his ability to carry 40 times should allow Alshon Jeffery and DL Moore to constantly pressure the cornerbacks and draw one of the safeties on double coverage on Jeffery. Georgia does not have their equivalents at WR this season.

The wild card is Garcia; will he be there to play?”

Then they beat a VT team that clearly underestimated them, and further, ‘gave’ the game to Boise…again and again. The fact that they turned around and lost the next week to James Monroe, or Madison, or whoever, just shows where their head was at. Trust me, we ain’t overconfident and have no intention of underestimating a team that’s, pre-season, ranked in the top ten while we’re nowhere in sight. The UGA D is going to be nasty this year…. Not as good as Bama’s but damn good. JJ and Tree are lighting everyone up at practice and we have 2 guys better than Mr. Cody in the middle. Ray Drew will be starting by USCe and they say he is basically unblock-able. We have so much depth at safety that Rambo has been moved to 2nd string. Same with our CB’s, Brandon Smith has Nick Marshall breathing down his neck and he has become a very good defensive player….By the way, Nick Marshall IS the next Champ Bailey in the very soon future.

Let me just say this……… The defense you saw last year is long gone…Totally new players and brand new attitude. Boise is going to be shocked at the speed that comes at them in a few weeks. Because it is NOTHING they have ever seen before I promise. It’s sick the speed we have on defense now. And don’t give me this Oklahoma crap. Son, this is the SEC on astro-tuf!!!

As far as USCe it’s just going to come down to who wants it more. Both D’s are tremendous and both are going to beat up on each offense. I have a feeling USCE knocks one of out RB’s out of the game and we knock Lattimore out. If that’s the case UGA wins in a nailbiter…. 10-9.

“When’s Ga’s next scrimmage? Will Crowell participate? He needs the reps”

Psssha, UGA is going with new tactics this year…..

Practice is over-rated as it experience and talent.

As long as UGA will send somebody to roust the freshmen RB and former scout team LB out of bed on Sept 3rd, UGA players don’t need to know any offense plays or responsibilities, everything will take care of itself. In fact, the word appears to be that next year, the UGA coaching staff is going to just discard with fall camp altogether as a waste of time. And if you aren’t wasting time with practice who needs a playbook, they are discarding it also.

On a more serious note:
I still have not heard any responses to an earlier question…

From where is UGA’s offensive production going to come?

UGA fans are so schizo about their offense….they rail endlessly about the horror of Bobo as OC but at the same time have endless and blind faith that this bogeyman of their demise for the past two years is going magically meld this hodgepodge of inexperienced and unproductive players into a juggernaut of epic proportions?

And NONE of your WRs except Charles has come close to having the numbers you listed.

Just so the other forum posters understand…..Bobo, the man who could not take advantage of UCF with the likes of AJ and Kris along with seasoned RBs in King\Ealey, is going to meld together this average group into averaging 25pts a game? Based on?

I think a lot of people are underestimating Samuel’s potential impact. It comes down to coaching philosophy, i.e. how much Richt and Bobo choose to use him more than his skill level. If they chose a power running game I think he racks up over a thousand yards. That’s not Richt’s style, I see those numbers posted by Lex as very possible.

Score 48-13. Same exact story 5 years later except for a few things(they had all-everything everything and ?s all over both sides of the ball for UGA):

1) They are favored heavily (but still have yet to beat a SEC team). They have never worn the target agaist their bigger opponents. Their coaches have always played the underdog role and can’t use that as motivation.
2) Their program is being investigated by the NCAA and they just fired their AD. (How did the AD debacle work out at UGA last year?)

With all the talent and experience BSU has, I don’t even know why UGA would take the field. Oh wait I know why, because that is where the game is played. Not on blogs comparing last years numbers with a bunch of nerds.

What RB hasn’t fumbled the last few years. Samuel will prove his self this year. We are going to need his experience.

how2fish, when we’ve gone we did well. Didn’t get out as much as I would have liked this summer, we had a few problems with the boat. Heard the other night an additional snapper season was in the works starting Sept 13th.

What have your friends been into, and you need to try hard to get some time in yourself, good hearing from you. Let me know if you get down this way, meet you at the Florabama for a brew and some oysters. Take care my friend.

A full game set of plays for the Georgia offense against one of the worst returning defenses in the conference…and all all they get is one touchdown and three yards per carry?

Ouch.
