ATHENS – Georgia has likely lost free safety Jakar Hamilton for the season.

Hamilton
The senior, who started five games last season and played in all 13, was diagnosed Wednesday with a stress fracture in his right ankle. Since it will require two to three months to heal, “my guess is he won’t play this year,” coach Mark Richt said.
Hamilton has been sidelined since the beginning of preseason camp with a hamstring pull. Richt wasn’t sure if Hamilton had suffered a new injury but said it required a bone scan to detect Hamilton’s fracture.
Hamilton will be able to redshirt. He transferred to UGA from Georgia Military College last year.
Meanwhile, junior Shawn Williams appears to have locked down the starting job at free safety. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound graduate of Early County High continues to draw praise daily for his good work in practice. He was second among defenders with seven tackles in Wednesday’s scrimmage.
Junior Sanders Commings and freshman Corey Moore will provide depth.
Richt on TE Orson Charles
Richt said he was fairly confident Orson Charles would not face eligibility issues in the wake of his inclusion in the Yahoo! Sports report on a rogue booster at Miami.
“I wouldn’t say I didn’t get too concerned about it, but I didn’t think about it a lot or dwell on it much,” Richt said after Wednesday’s practice. “I felt like it was something I couldn’t control and until I heard one way or another I was just going to move forward as if everything was going to be OK.”
Charles, a junior tight end and preseason All-SEC selection, was among dozens of athletes listed in a Yahoo! Sports story who allegedly had interactions with convicted felon Nevin Shapiro. Shapiro claims to have provided millions of dollars worth of improper benefits and services to former Miami players and recruits from 2002-2010.
Richt mum about Miami troubles
Richt is a Miami alum and football lettermen, but he was very measured in what he said about his alma mater’s problems.
“I haven’t read the report but I’ve been hearing about it,” he said. “It just sounded pretty dramatic, I guess would be a good word for it.”
Richt said he heard a brief radio report on Miami while driving to the Athens Holiday Inn to speak to the Rotary Club.
“I’m not one to throw stones because I know the bottom line is it’s hard to be perfect,” Richt said. “So, we’re just trying like mad to do things right.”
Crowell, Samuel miss scrimmage
Georgia conducted its second controlled scrimmage of the preseason on Wednesday at Sanford Stadium and it did so without its top two tailbacks.
Isaiah Crowell (pulled groin) and Richard Samuel (strained quad) were unable to participate due to injuries. Former walkon Brandon Harton (12 carries, 51 yards) and redshirt freshman Ken Malcome (5-10) filled in on the first team instead.
Richt said he’s not overly concerned about the running backs missing time at this point.
“I’m not too concerned now,” he said. “If they get to the two weeks prior to the game, I don’t think it will be took problematic.”
Richt said Crowell could return as early as Friday but Samuel will likely be next week.
Scrimmage standouts
Quarterback Aaron Murray was 11-of-16 for 108 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Backup Hutson Mason was 13-of-27 for 125 yards with no TDs or interceptions.
Rantavious Wooten led all receivers with 61 yards on five catches and a touchdown and Israel Troupe added five catches for 50 yards. Malcolm Mitchell had three for 37.
As he did in the first scrimmage, linebacker Alec Ogletree led all tacklers with eight. He also had a sack and a pass breakup. Bacarri Rambo and Jordan Love added six apience and Jarvis Jones had five and a sack. Rambo also had an interception.
Richt said there were no injuries but that center Ben Jones suffered from cramping, likely because he had a one-hour aerobics class earlier in the day.
Picture Day on Saturday
UGA’s annual Fans’ Picture Day is Saturday in the Reed Plaza area of Sanford Stadium. Due to recent NCAA issues raised over the sell and trade of autographed memorabilia, fans will not be able to bring any outside items to be signed. The only thing UGA will permit to be signed is schedule posters. A limit of two per person will be provided.
Gates will open at 1 p.m. Head coach Mark Richt and players will be available at 3 p.m. Special ticket coupons are required for access to Richt and bulldog mascot. Those tickets will be distributed to the first 150 fans at 8 a.m. from the East End ticket windows on East Campus Road. All other teams will be available at 1.

Sly, if you give a dog a bone once, it’s going to come back to you forever for another one. Also why do you think Obama want’s to legalize all “illegal Immigrants”? Obviously to dilute our voting power even more. Once they get us outnumbered they can pretty much do whatever they want, until we all decide to relocate overseas somewhere.

BS is in the Top Ten. They ought to be favored, and they ought to believe they can whip us. I’ve got no problem with their self-confidence. We won’t win the blog game, the pre-game, or the prognosticators’ game. That said, I’m pulling for the post-game.

JDawg,
yes! They have a group of fans that are similar to SEC type fans that are very obnoxious. I have been following the ESPN blogs closer th epast few weeks. The great bloggers have been “The U” fans. This is a group that obviously have lost there moral compass much like the programs.

Boise St. defense vs. VT in 2010 (2011 starters only)
DE McClellin 6 tackles, 4 TFL, 2.5 S
DT Winn 5 Tackles, 1.5 TFL, 0.5 S, 1 fumble recovery
LB Tevis 6 tackles, 1 TFL
LB Smith 4 tackles
S Iloka 4 tackles
DE Crawford 1 tackle
S Stanaway 1 tackle
CB Taylor 3 tackles
DT Baker 1 tackle
VT was not playing up to expectations early in the year (lost to JMU the next week). These stats simply reflect what the defensive players on Boise State’s team accomplished against a decent-size opponent.

To put that win by Boise St. over VT in the proper context, here is part of my preseason assessment of VT. The whole post is too long to repeat here, but this final paragraph pretty much tells the story regarding their defense going into the 2010 season:
“Defensive players with starts in 2009 include the following players:
LB Barquell Rivers (13)
CB Rashad Carmichael (13)
DT John Graves (8)
LB Lyndell Rivers (5)
ROV Davon Morgan (4)
CB Cris Hill (2)
This defense has a major challenge ahead for Virginia Tech to end up the season in the Top 10.”

Prozac – No, I have not used that site. Primarily I use the stats and roster (and depth chart, when available) from the team’s web site. I keep my own spreadsheet of national major conference QB passer ratings using the standard formula. I’ve also used depth chart info form the ESPN site as necessary.
I’ll certainly check out the cfbstats sites in detail, though. Thanks for the tip.

Nothing could be finer, I would expect nothing less from you. However, UGA has lost back to back games against USC once in my lifetime. Plus you’ve only beat UGA in Athens 3 times since 1980.
Just turned in my predictions for South Carolina: 7-5 losses to UGA, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Arkansas.

I feel the need to look ahead, since some Carolina fans are on the blog today. From a late June post by me:
“Here’s my early take on South Carolina:
This game is going to be tough going in the trenches for both teams. S. Carolina has a very good DL, with 3 starters returning plus the addition of Clowney. Their OL has 3 starters returning, plus a guard who started 1 game last season. They have 2 backups with significant experience (JR and SR lettermen). Georgia now has Jenkins and Geathers to rotate inside, and I suspect Drew will see considerable action at a rush end position.
“S. Carolina has 3 returning starters in the DB including Stephon Gilmore. A returning MLB starter, and two returning starters at the Spur position. With the exception of Gilmore, probably a push with the DBs/LBs with Georgia talent.
“The presence of Lattimore and his ability to carry 40 times should allow Alshon Jeffery and DL Moore to constantly pressure the cornerbacks and draw one of the safeties on double coverage on Jeffery. Georgia does not have their equivalents at WR this season.
The wild card is Garcia; will he be there to play?”

If the 4th string tailback runs for 4.25 yards per carry what will Lattimore do to the defense. I would be worried.

Did not B-state beat OU in a bowl game not to far back and you all think they are going to be worried about UGA. UGA is going to beat the #4 team in the nation with no running game and a defense that could not stop the 4th string tailback. After the second quarter you can stick a fork in the dogs will be done!

Hey Delbert, on your ‘june post’…’and your point would be?’ How about a close game…since that’s what it’s been for as long as most of us can remember.
….and gtfan, you’re right, it is disconcerting that our freshman, walk-on, 4th-string, tailback can average 4+ yards per…even if it was against the second and third defense. We’re shaking in our boots in anticipation…then again FSU showed us how to deal with young Mr. Lattimore – let’s just say ‘he ain’t no hockey-player’.

Boise State lucked into that bowl victory. They got a give me TD when OU QB fumbled early in the game. In the 2nd half OU went on a 25-0 run to send it to OT. Then BSU ran the Stute of Liberty gimmick play to win the game, 43-42. It is not like they showed up and dominated a OU team. Lets put it in perspective here.

…and furthermore gtfan, BS beat an Oklahoma team that didn’t want to be there with a series of, miracle, trick-plays, that couldn’t possibly work more than one out of ten times. Then they beat a VT team that clearly underestimated them, and further, ‘gave’ the game to Boise…again and again. The fact that they turned around and lost the next week to James Monroe, or Madison, or whoever, just shows where their head was at. Trust me, we ain’t overconfident and have no intention of underestimating a team that’s, pre-season, ranked in the top ten while we’re nowhere in sight. Just say that I won’t have to say ‘I told you so’ when it turns out like that U of Hawaii thing did a few years back.

Dr. Don. I do not think his Aerobics class is a college course, just a normal aerobics class. It is probably a daily or weekly thing he does. So if you exercise for an hour with Aerobics and do not hydrate enough before going out into the Sun for football practice a cramp would not be out of the question.

The UGA D is going to be nasty this year…. Not as good as Bama’s but damn good. JJ and Tree are lighting everyone up at practice and we have 2 guys better than Mr. Cody in the middle. Ray Drew will be starting by USCe and they say he is basically unblock-able. We have so much depth at safety that Rambo has been moved to 2nd string. Same with our CB’s, Brandon Smith has Nick Marshall breathing down his neck and he has become a very good defensive player….By the way, Nick Marshall IS the next Champ Bailey in the very soon future.
Let me just say this……… The defense you saw last year is long gone…Totally new players and brand new attitude. Boise is going to be shocked at the speed that comes at them in a few weeks. Because it is NOTHING they have ever seen before I promise. It’s sick the speed we have on defense now. And don’t give me this Oklahoma crap. Son, this is the SEC on astro-tuf!!!
As far as USCe it’s just going to come down to who wants it more. Both D’s are tremendous and both are going to beat up on each offense. I have a feeling USCE knocks one of out RB’s out of the game and we knock Lattimore out. If that’s the case UGA wins in a nailbiter…. 10-9.
It’s gonna be fun but I’m telling you…The UGA D is going to be really nasty.

“When’s Ga’s next scrimmage? Will Crowell participate? He needs the reps”
Psssha, UGA is going with new tactics this year…..
Practice is over-rated as it experience and talent.
As long as UGA will send somebody to roust the freshmen RB and former scout team LB out of bed on Sept 3rd, UGA players don’t need to know any offense plays or responsibilities, everything will take care of itself. In fact, the word appears to be that next year, the UGA coaching staff is going to just discard with fall camp altogether as a waste of time. And if you aren’t wasting time with practice who needs a playbook, they are discarding it also.
On a more serious note:
I still have not heard any responses to an earlier question…
From where is UGA’s offensive production going to come?
UGA fans are so schizo about their offense….they rail endlessly about the horror of Bobo as OC but at the same time have endless and blind faith that this bogeyman of their demise for the past two years is going magically meld this hodgepodge of inexperienced and unproductive players into a juggernaut of epic proportions?

It’s all based on potential at this time Logical, as far as knowledgeable, kool aid kleen, sane, logical folks are concerned.
We have hope and potential. Will the injury bug be kind, will the breaks go our way; “can” our coaches devise a solid game plan and stick with it? I will watch with interest, but my expectations won’t be sky high. I, like others think defense and special teams strategy should be our strengths, especially early in the year.

Not really since you just thru some numbers on the page.
So Samuel the injured scout team LB is going to beat both King\Ealey numbers from last season? Sort of proves the point about Schizo, if he was such a diamond why did your nemesis of an OC allow him to go to LB?
And NONE of your WRs except Charles has come close to having the numbers you listed.
Just so the other forum posters understand…..Bobo, the man who could not take advantage of UCF with the likes of AJ and Kris along with seasoned RBs in King\Ealey, is going to meld together this average group into averaging 25pts a game? Based on?
How much does that go down if you take out NMST, Vandy and Coastal? 15pts?
