UGA’s Orson Charles mentioned in report on NCAA violations at Miami

Georgia tight end Orson Charles has been mentioned in the mess that Yahoo! Sports is reporting about the University of Miami and its relationship with a notorious booster named Nevin Shapiro. Shapiro is a convicted felon who, in several prison interviews, claims he provided impermissible benefits to dozens of Miami players and recruits.

Charles is listed among those recruits with whom Shapiro claims to have had impermissible contact. But, on face value at least, it doesn’t look like he is anything but a bystander in all this.

The bombastic report, written by Yahoo! Sports reporter Charles Robinson, merely alleges that Charles was escorted by a Miami assistant coach to Shapiro to be given “a recruiting pitch.” As we all know, Charles rather famously signed with Georgia. Shapiro is incarcerated in federal prison in Atlanta after being convicted for his role in a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

Current and former Miami players and student-athletes from all over are implicated by Shapiro and other sources in the extensive report, which includes thousands of supporting documents such as bank statements, hotel folios, cell phone records and corroborating quotes from athletes. Here’s the specific passage in which Charles is mentioned (along with several other recruits):

Among the specific incidents, Shapiro or other sources say Hurtt, Hill, Stoutland, Pannunzio and Allen all delivered top-tier recruits to Shapiro’s home or luxury suite so the booster could make recruiting pitches to them. Among the players who were ushered to Shapiro while they were still in high school: Eventual Miami commitments Ray-Ray Armstrong, Dyron Dye and Olivier Vernon (prompted by Hurtt); eventual Florida commitments Andre Debose (Hurtt) and Matt Patchan (prompted by Stoutland and Pannunzio); eventual Georgia commitment Orson Charles (Pannunzio); and eventual Central Florida commitment Jeffrey Godfrey (Allen).

A hot-link on Charles’ name carries readers to a page that provides more details of on Charles and his encounter with Shapiro, including Shapiro’s account of the meeting:

“Orson Charles was a tight end out of Plant City [High School] who was Robert Marve’s teammate. And because I had a real close relationship with Robert, Robert’s high school coach, Robert Weiner, came to Miami, Marve brought him to my house and he was with Orson Charles. I showed [Charles] my closet. The reason why I show all the kids my closet is because that’s where I had like 50 to 70 UM game-worn jerseys of all the best players in the last however long. That was our first visit. I saw him a second time and I think it was a Miami football camp.”

Charles’ name is also on a list of players Shapiro mentions that appears next to the text of the story. Again, click HERE to read the entire report from Yahoo!Sports. Here’s an Associated Press story on Charles’ connection and here’s a link to The AP report about the story.

UGA officials did not return messages sent late Tuesday night seeking comment about Charles. Wednesday morning Athletic Director Greg McGarity said via email UGA is checking into it.

If and when they respond, I suspect they will say something similar to what Alabama spokesperson Doug Walker said: “The University of Alabama is aware of the story, but we will have no further comment.”

Joe Pannunzio was the tight ends and special teams coach at Miami under former head coach Randy Shannon and is now the first-year director of football operations at Alabama. Bama’s new offensive line coach, Jeff Stoutland, is also implicated in the Yahoo! Sports report.

Charles, a junior from Tampa, is a preseason All-SEC first-team selection expected to be one of the Bulldogs’ main offensive weapons this season. He had 49 career receptions for 796 yards and five touchdowns.

We’ll try to sort all this out from Georgia’s end on Wednesday.

I think if Orson did anything inappropriate he would probably be a Hurricane…really wish “reporters would leave players alone unless there were any direct allegations…just sounds like name dropping from a bitter crook to me.

Not too worried, but I would be a bit concerned if I was a Bama fan. Sounds like this is just the beginning of a big mess for Pannunzio and Stoutland. They may not be involved, but at the rate the NCAA works… it’ll linger on and on and on…

JE- Where does Towers imply that Orson Charles took any part in this. ‘it doesn’t look like he is anything but a bystander in all this.”

Maybe you should actually read the article before jumping to accusations.

I am happy to see AJC report about it, because everyone else is.

“Shapiro said he gave money, cars, yacht trips, jewelry, televisions and other gifts to a list of players including Vince Wilfork, Jon Beason, Antrel Rolle, Devin Hester, Willis McGahee and the late Sean Taylor. Shapiro also claimed he paid for nightclub outings, sex parties, restaurant meals and in one case, an abortion for a woman impregnated by a player. One former Miami player, running back Tyrone Moss, told Yahoo! Sports he accepted $1,000 from Shapiro around the time he was entering college.”

Once again, the AJC does it job and reports the BIGGEST College Football Story of the year that implicates( although minor) a player currently on scholarship at Georgia, two assistants at Alabama, players at Florida and yet a group of Georgia uniformed, we are victims, UGA does nothing wrong, the NCAA and SEC are always picking on us, the AJC is biased against us dumb fans and bloggers want the AJC to ignore the story.

Get past it dudes and just face the facts, the program at UGA has not been relevant in over 8 years and that was a minor blip on the radar screen and it has been over 30 years since a title was won. Even GT has won a title since then.

Wow, this makes USC and the Reggie Bush deal look like child’s play! University of Miami. The hero of Auburn Iniverstiy and what Auburn strives to become. The Miami in the middle of nowhere that can BOOSTER the best players in the land to hang with Bama!

On another SERIOUS note. Have you read the full Yahoo report? Man this was going on for 10 years and yes it is ALL true as there is confirmation and verification of every thing from one source or another and many times multiple sources and there will be more witnesses coming out, hundreds of them.

The thing that KILLS me is that they have this LEGAL program where if you DONATE so much to the school, you get to BUDDY UP with a player for the season and then get to expand from there as big as you want. I mean talk about inviting trouble by the NCAA! This is legal! Man this makes it so easy. I mean is this how Auburn has done it for 20 years too?

What also blows my mind is that no one checked up on the players ove all these years from the University. Not anyone in the athletic department, administration, compliance office or if they did they looked the other way. One person said something but it went nowhere and apparently the head of compliance did a background check on Shapiro, found out he was part owner of a sports agency and looked the other way. Coaches were involved too. In football and basketball. The NCAA compliance officer or whatever title he has that scolded USC when it was sanctioned, was at MIAMI while all this was taking place an now he works in compliance for the NCAA! ROFLMFAO!

Man this is just the tip of the iceberg! Read this LOOOOOONNNNNGG report on Yahoo sports! They did the investigation on Reggie Bush and broke it open too remember? This is significantly larger and involved players AND coaches over 20 years. Criminal activity, money, large gifts, plane trips for family, girlfriends, bounties on players(Tebow and that FL ST Qb that escapes me) I could go on and on and on. The bottomline is: Miami is in DEEP. Death Penalty territory and LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL IS A GIVEN. It is simlar to USC because they let agents on and out and run free at practice and in LOCKER ROOMS! At least this guy was booster, but he just buddied up was the next generation “LUTHER CAMPBELL” and hooked up the players with his PARTNER when it was time for the draft. HE WAS ALL OVER CAMPUS had picture with the president of the university. Man I could go on and on. Just read the article and lets not get any Miami recruits or players that leave because they might be wanting for us at UGA to “show them the money” too! Funk that! Hey Orosn might have taken something, who knows, or he just might have been invited to their patry to TRY to get him to come there. Shapiro did get in the the recruiting part too and tried to help get many players to down to Miami. It wa like a “LUTHER CAMPBELL VIDEO”! Pop pop that coochie pop pop that coochie baby! Jewlery, cash, cars, tickets, trips, prostitutes, strippers, whatever the players needed or wanted, they got it….. big time. Pop that coochie!

Hey it is not AJC doing this, this is NATIONAL NEWS OK? Yahoo sports reported his name and did a lengthy investigation. I do not know if there is any verification or witnesses to OC doing anything wrong that was reported. This is ongoing so hey if Orson got a really good lap dance or was just at a party, he needs to come clean. Let me go back and see how the report said OC was involved.

It just said Orson was brought in, as were many other players, so Shapiro could make a “recruiting pitch” to him. No allegations other than he was a recruit and was brought over to try to win him over by a booster. If that is all that it was, then not much smoke in that so I dont expect any fire. It is all good right now. Orson obviously has a good head on his shoulders and escaped that trap. Best recruiting choice he made.

At the absolute most, O Charles will have to miss a few games just for stepping his foot in pelican booboo and not catching it until he got back in the house…lol. If we play him, he won’t cost us any games. This is all Miami’s mess. Word to all D1 programs: Cut the bag men now!!!. Fellas, if the NCAA wants to survive, they have to come up with a way to pay the players. And no, tennis, golf, and volleyball players do not have to receive the same compensation, but they do have to get something. Compensation should be determined by the gross revenue of each individual sport and all athletes get a certain percentage, say 20% for starters. They should unionize or form a national student-athlete coalition and force the NCAA and it’s member institutions into a CBA. That DOES meet the standard of equal pay for equal play. So the argument about paying all the athletes the same amount does not apply. Heck even Boise St. faces probation for a female tennis player…hahhahahha. If this doesn’t happen within the next 15 to 20 years, these future Super conferences will just break off and form independent leagues, compensate the players themselves, and get even bigger TV packages. Real Talk. The alternative is to provide a need-based grant of up to $15,000 per scholarship player, per year with a $60,000 cap, to help out at home or other expenses. Have the athlete apply and prove they need a certain amount, and take care of the issue directly.

Wonderful.

I see the AJ-C has jumped right on this Orson Charles, as if we have to hold him out of the 1st two games vs Boise State and South Carolina, with Mark Richt’s “coaching staff” in the balance on these two games.

11-3 I still say we will be. Boise State is no match for our talent.

And, you all said, that Garcia is not Murray.

And, you all said how great we will be at tailback this season, and just who is it who is practicing to get his 1st college football tote ?

No one.

30 fumbles this season, putting the ball on the carpet and up for grabs, and we haven’t been any good at all teaching our offensive players how to fall on fumbles, either. Both how to hold the football and how to fall on the football, are not talents or gifts, but learned skills. We don’t know how to teach them.

Funny that Texas A and M cannot join The SEC. I love that with their Losing Record this entire Century starting 2000 (no, that is not 11 years ago we are talking about but every game from 2000 through today) against all 6 BCS Conferences, Navy has done better than Texas A and M. TV sets don’t turn on in Dallas or Houston to watch such Losing. SEC owns Texas A and M and always will with their 39 percent win percentage all-time in games vs The SEC. And, The SEC (and everyone else) always out-recruits Texas A and M in Texas.

Sort it out for us all AJ-C while once again you have posted not one subliminal phrase daily like this that Georgia tek is on back-to-back NCAA PROBATION repeat offender in FOOTBALL.

This is a great story with lots of links to Yahoo’s story.

OC was what 17 in Miami with a teammate and brought to this guys house. What’s a kid to do, he’s with an assistant coach, say I can’t get out of the car ?

At that point most kids don’t know what’s permissible and what’s not ..

There is a lot more trouble here for the assistant coaches that were setting this stuff up as well as the athletes that took cash and favors….

Interesting in that in all the conference expansion talk going around Miami old Big East is not being mentioned as going anywhere… Maybe with this happening for the past 10 years, they’ll be the scapegoat that gets the death penalty ..

Everyone needs to get their heads out of the sand, no matter what team you support. This guy handed out money to players like a rich grandfather does for his grandchildren. If Charles at Georgia and Debose and Pathcan at Florida took money…..they broke the rules and will lose their eligibility. Let’s hope not, because this guy is a realy sleaze of a person. But Debose, Patchan, and Charles do not come from well to do families….so there is some grounds for concern with them. Financial records for these Georgia and Florida players will be checked. We can only hope they were smart, if the money was offerered.

This guy also offered Miami players $5,000 each for anyone who hurt Tebow when Florida played Miami. He also offered FSU players the same deal….before Miami played Florida. This guy was bad news, and it seems that some people at Miami were aware of the things this guy was doing and did nothing about it, including the possibility of Aubry Hill knowing, the current WR coach at Florida….although Muschamp has stated that nothing showed up on Hill when they did their background check on him when he was hired.

But this story is not going away…..and the Georgia and Florida players will have to go through the process becasue they went to this guys house on a recruiting visit…..and he had tons of money to give away to recruits….but not saying they took it…..but the NCAA will certainly check to see if they did.

I don’t think that any article alleges any particular amount of money that Charles was supposed to have received as a 17 year old kid, taken by his assistant coach to see a booster. I think the asst. coach is the one that has to worry about this. I don’t think Charles would accept money or gratuities from a Miami booster, and then suddenly change to UGA. He must have had UGA on his mind already, and there is nothing to suggest that UGA offered him any inducement that is considered illegal.
Anybody suggesting that UGA somehow offered Charles more money to come to UGA, or any renumeration at all, is the rumor starter, not the AJC.
Right now, you have the word of a bitter crook, sitting in jail and yes, he may have given some money to Miami players, but there is nothing in the Yahoo article that suggest that they have any such records for Charles.

Blame AJ-C in general, for their lack of discussion of Georgia tek on NCAA PROBATION back-to-back in football, and the AJ-C cover-up of it from the beginning to this day, today – while, they continue to write minute write-ups saying they will get back to us by today about a non-story that might be bad for UGA. And, you defend the AJ-C. What does that tell you ?

As the AJC’s UGA beat writer, Chip is doing just that; communicating the fact that a current UGA player’s name has come up in an article from another source (Yahoo) that mentions his name in their investigation of a Miami booster and his involvement in recruiting for that university where in that booster’s actions, NCAA regulations were broken.

No more, no less. The investigation will unfold. It’s unfortunate that Orson Charles is a part of that investigation and that UGA must wait on the NCAA’s clearinghouse for Orson’s apparent innocence in signing and playing at UGA.

An unfortunate incidence and distraction for OC and UGA. No more, no less. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon. .. Go Dawgs!

The AJC is the biggest recruiting tool for Bama, Auburn, and Fl. It’s a shame the largest paper in the state doesn’t support the State University like other papers support their State’s schools. Read a paper in Birmingham, Orlando, Jacksonville, and you get none of this constant garbage you get from these incompetent writers the AJC has to offer. These guys get off on writing articles when UGA loses out on a recruit, or when something as minor as a kid getting thrown from a scooter. For grown men to get off on trying to smear a 17 or 18 yr. old kid is a testament to the character of these
writer’s. If you want to write a story, you should be writing about how corrupt both schools in the state of Alabama are. Bama hires a D.L coach that was fired by Clemson, and he has a long list of improper recruiting allegations against him, Now Bama hires as it’s O.L. coach one of the coaches that is in the middle of this scandal. And people wonder why Bama does so well in getting top players from florida to commit to them. Auburn, which is a disgrace to the SEC, hires Trooper Taylor whose name has been linked to several illegal recruiting violations while he was at Tenn, and now at Auburn. Ever heard of his “Pimp Mobile” the white limo where he entertains recruits with paid prostitutes. This has been well documented by 2 papers now. Even a top w.r. recruit from the State of Ga. mentioned the reason he picked Auburn was how well the coaches were at entertaining him on his visit. How can the AJC not write about these 2 outlaw schools? If the New York Times, and Yahoo Sports knows about these illegal tactics, it’s funny the writers for this paper have no clue of all of these stories. Good job once again AJC, but it’s only a matter of time before both outlaw programs are brought down. Wish these 2 schools would take their obnoxious fans and join another conference, so the SEC can try and gain some type of respectability back.

Then, the thing with UM and Marve happened during his recruitment and we all new his was going to UGA after that, but he was favoring UM at the time. Not saying he is guilty of anything. But, everyone in FL knows how recruiting works in the state of FL and now the NCAA is starting to do something about it especially South FL, it starts when they are still playing little league football. So the culture is already there. Not saying all players are guilty, but when a player leaves South FL to play for a school outside of the state people wonder what he got offered to leave the state of FL.

Thought Tech was the school is trouble, in front of the NCAA..Knowing both coaches personally and having a son play for the Head Coach at Tech, I can tell you straight up that Paul Johnson ain’t a cheater…..Mark Richt ain’t no party to handing out money, and would turn in whoever was handing the money out when he found out about it….If he let an aide go at UGA over introducing someone to Hershel Walker in the Butts-Mehre building, you can bet Coach Richt wouldn’t be in on something like this, nor would he dream about it….Like him or not, he has integrity…He won’t risk his job over a football game….Our state is lucky to have Head coaches of integrity at UGA and Georgia Tech….. The Only thing I can say about Paul Johnson that is not good is that he owes me $5.00 from a golf bet from long ago…Think he spent my $5.00 on one of those big Cuban cigars…..

Thanks for a little perspective, CRO-MAGNON MAN. I hope Charles is cleared and can play. I don’t know if what he did (talk to a booster and look in the guys clothes closet) would get him punished or the school (Miami). Georgia is not involved.

Charles could be a feature of the offense so he would be missed, but tight end is one of Georgia’s deepest positions.

Sorry Trolls, worst case this isn’t catastrophic.

Whether he is guilty or not, it’s not the AJC’s fault for reporting what is a national story. Never once did I hear the author say anything about guilt.

Maybe my Tech friends are right about the Georgia fanbase. I have been a fan since watching Hershel vault over the lines for td’s when I was 6 years old, but when I see the sort of attacking, hyper, overactive imaginations by Georgia fans on this blog, it makes me wonder. I doubt Marve was pushing The U to Orson after the way he felt that was treated. Marve was looking to get out of Dade County about that time. Sure a coach may have introduced him, but I’m sure Orson met a lot of people during his visit. Ever meet Orson? Well I met him at least 5 times during 7 on7’s here in Tampa during the summer before his senior season. The guy is one of the most approachable people you’d ever want to meet, however when I said I met him 5 times, it was just that. Even though I was a friend of one of his teammates, the guy never remembered me. It was funny that he couldn’t remember me because I have pretty distinct facial hair, plus I have one ugly mug. But every time I was there with my friend he would come over and introduce himself, and my friend would say to Orson that you met him numerous times before. So, if Orson met the guy I’m sure that he made the guy feel real good, but I doubt that it meant anything to him. He’s just a real nice and down to earth good guy. BTW, hope to make it up to a game with my buddy and “meet” him again, LOL.

It’s “the dumbest” of the day, so I am msure you can easily explain how so.

Jan Kemp ?? Bear Bryant? Wally Butts???

August 17th, 2011
11:11 am

Jan Kemp and LIFE magazine have something in common. BOTH ran with wild stories about UGA that were finally proved to be either false or at a later time in appellate court, were dumbed down to oblivion.

LIFE or LOOK magazine ran with a wild story in the early, early 1960s alleging that Bear Bryant and Wally Butts conspired to throw a game between their respective schools. Alabama needed no deals then to win. The rags or some informant claimed to have heard a phone converstation between the two coaches. Later, both men sued and got major money out of it. Bear really made out with some $$. Case closed. Bear Braynt VW dealership and hotels resulted.

The AJC was embittered with this humiliating defeat because their sports writer Furman Bisher wanted some of UGA. His baby boy of course, received a football scholarship to GT and he did not even play football. Look it up GT fans !!!

Jan Kemp “blew the whistle” on UGA because her lover on the Lady Dogs BB team flunked out and was NOT given preferential treatment. So? She made up tons of lies or half truths to hurt UGA and such. Later in an appeals court, her “victory” was substantially reduced. This says it all.

She ended up with a sad, pathetic existance because almost no one thought that she was credible. She died a tragic death and had a sad ending to her dreary life after all of that pastic surgery too. I think she ultimately won like $24.99 and some Varsity french fries for life. Look it up.

UGA received not one moment of NCAA sanction as a result. GT? They are in their SECOND go round with NCAA cheating in the last 8 or 10 years. THAT is why they had to write that $100,000 check and VACATE any achievements. About 8 or 9 years ago, they were found GUILTY of systemic cheating in all sports. Victories were then forfeited. 19 athlestes were deemed illegal to play and grades were manufactured for them. CHEATERS GT is known far and wide as.

Jan Kemp? Oh, yeah, $24.99 and some greasy fries she won. Compare that to GT’s current humiliations. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

This is simple. If what Charles did what he is alleged to have done, it is or it isn’t a violation. If it is a violation, then UGa wll have to hold him out until the allegation is proved or disproved. Otherwise, UGa will risk having played an ineligible player. Where is the flaw in this logic?

Not saying he did anything wrong and in the common sense world he probably did not. But that is not the world of the NCAA. Today just the sniff warrants a sit down until we sort it out. Auburn took an incredibly huge risk with Newton and it worked out. Today the risk far outway the reward. In the end OC should have left the building as soon as he walked in.

Do we need ot hold out Crowell? Richt broke a rule in recruiting him. Do we need to hold out any player that we reported making improper calls to during a dead period. THAT On the school. If Charles walked in the man’s mansion and looked at his stuff, THATs on Miami, not him. Let just conceed that he did, and it IS a voilation. That doesnt affect his status here.

I’d imagine the NCAA and UGA will look into how Charles made it to Miami to visit with this Shapiro. Sounds like he just tagged along with Marve, since it says in the report that “Marve brought him…” As long as Shapiro didn’t pay for him to get to Miami (no where does it say that he did) and as long as Charles didn’t take anything from Shapiro (no where does it say that he did), there will be nothing to this story. From just that statement alone, it seems like Miami is in a heap of trouble, but Charles did nothing wrong. Just my take…

I agree. But it is guilty by association he has to worry about. No Bama Mike… Macel Dareus got a trip to Miami payed for. Airfare, lodging, etc. Much different situation if Orson Charles was brought to this house by his friend Marve. If Shapiro paid for the trip to Miami, then we may have an issue. The report didn’t sound like Shapiro paid for anything though… His contact with recruits as a booster of UM will put UM in hot water. But Charles and the other kids may have done no wrong by just taking a tour of the house.

If you morons would have taken the time to read the actual report as well as the individual player bios in it, you would know that the midget booster called out all the players who received cash or other benefits. His audio recordings regarding OC clearly state that all Orson did was take a tour of his house with a UM assistant coach and saw a few jerseys in the creep’s closet. If he had handed OC a nickel he would have said as much, just as he ratted out every other kid who banked on his “generosity.” Orson has ZERO to be concerned with and will not miss a single snap.

Sorry Cali Dawg but Stoutland and Pannunzio are in their first year at Bama and were only recently hired in the offseason. Nothing for us to worry about except that Stoutland and Pannunzio may be in trouble personally. Worst comes to worse we may have to let them go but we will suffer no fallout as far as sanctions go. There is only one thing worse than a cheat, and that’s a rat. The Hurricanes program looks like it’s about to get what it deserves, but I find it grotesque that someone with the character and background of Nevin Shapiro is the source. But, I suppose that’s how these things work; not every college football program has a regional bank president to finance the program’s illicit recruiting practices. Some programs have to make do with an ordinary felon.

I doubt that Orson Charles and the Dawgs have anything to worry about. The Hurricanes, on the other hand, are about to get their unseemly practices exposed. Long overdue.

Not quite. Dareus plane trip was paid for by a fellow recruit that signed with North Carolina. Supposedly Dareus paid him back cash immediately upon landing in Miami and he got a receipt from the player. The other recruit paid for the ticket because Dareus did not own a credit card. During the trip the recruit secured a hotel room for Dareus but Dareus stayed with his family because he is from Miami. Also when Dareus was brought to the party and realized it was being hosted by an agent he turned around and left. The NCAA made him pay for the hotel rooms which he didn’t use, possibly the airfare because he didn’t have the receipts, and also for what cab fare would have been and for meals of which he did partake. You should note that Dareus suspension was light because the NCAA said and I paraphrase ” Marcel Dareus was one of the most truthful and honest recruits we’ve ever interviewed”. WDE,

The 2 new Bama guys have only been there since January I think or late, late last year. They haven’t even had time to do anything unscrupulous in regards to recruiting. What they did at Miami is what they did at Miami. It has no bearing on their brief time at Alabama. They also would have gotten to Bama very late in the recruiting process since recruits sign in early February and all of Bama’s targeted 2011 recruits had been recruited for a long time before the arrival of these 2. It would be nice to impossible for these guys to suddendly find a Shapiro type booster buying players in one month and put themselves at risk of offering inducements to a signing class that had already been very well put together.

Now the 2 of them could very well be personally sanctioned by the NCAA and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Bama has to fire them based upon these serious allegations. But again that would affect these guys personally- not Alabama.

Incidentally it has also been reported that Yahoo sports is the one that is also working on breaking a big story on Cam Newton, the supposed money bag man, etc. Not saying that’s true or not but as was verified by the vp of enforcement herself to Chizik at the NCAA meetings the Cam Newton investigation is ongoing.

Brainiac,

Sorry dude but for a bulldogs fan to take a shot at an esteemed program like Nebraska is laughable. They were the single most dominant football team of the 90s with 3 national titles in 4 years and if not for a missed field goal in the 93 orange bowl it would have been 4 national titles in 5 years. They are also one of the top 5 or 6 winningest programs of all time and 2nd or 3rd all time in bowl success behing Alabama and maybe one other program. Alltime winning % I believe they are also top 5 and most certainly top 7 or 8.

College football has always been this way. It is out of control and the NCAA (Without Subpeona Power) cannot control it. This type of crap goes on at every major college football program including (I hate to say it) UGA. I think everyone is just in denial! Without the internet and the free flowing information age we would still be clueless as to what goes on during the recruiting process. My personal opinion is who cares! I am just tired of reading about it. I just want to see the team I expect UGA to be play a game without losing a player to this type of BS! I thought AJ got a raw deal last year and you can probably blame that on our poor start. Someone needs to use 2 sticks of dynamite and blow the whole thing up and start over… New Conferences, New Rules, New Play-offs!!! Let the revolution begin!

@Tide Rising that is my hope that they didn’t have time to do any damage..because I’m afraid they would. I have nothing to say about Cam and Auburn..too much said already.Oh and NCBF report just in NCAA has cleared Charles to play…

Bama Mike we all witnessed plenty of worry coming from that direction for the entire near-decade in which UA was the absolute laughing stock of the SEC. It’s only been a few short seasons since that hasn’t been the case

Un-Tank,

Being a charitable man I also feel I have the duty to help the truly ignorant like yourself. So lets begin. Bama was absent for a near-decade? Huh? Are you just stupid? The last year Bama didn’t go bowling was way back in 2003. In 99 we won the sec and went to the orange bowl. The next 5 years was well below Bama standards due to the probation of the early 2000s but even then we posted 10 win seasons in 02 and 05 including a Cotton bowl win over Texas tech. In 05 we also spent the majority of the season ranked in the top 5 including several weeks perched at no. 3. 06 and 07 were average years where we still went bowling. For the past 3 years from 08 through 2010 we have won 10 games or more each year, finished top 10, and have been ranked no. 1 in each of those seasons for several weeks at a time. You should learn some recent football history before spouting off at the mouth.

My pleasure!

I know 90% of the people on here should be working and not raving about all of the hype that comes with College Football. However, we love it this way (at least I think so). We can gripe and complain about this all we want but do we really think it will ever change??? I really doubt it. Look at our government… It’s the same thing but just at a larger scale. There is WAY too much money involved in college sports (and government for that matter) for it ever to be fixed (at least in reasonable time frame). We only have ourselves to blame for all of this. If we (as fans) didnt pay for jerseys, tickets, beer, pizza and whatever else you can think of that drives a College Sporting event we would’nt even be discussing it. This is the monster we created I guess we just have to live with it.

@Tide Rising: I don’t see where I have included “anything to gloat about” regarding UGA. UGA hasn’t had a lot of that the past couple of years. I simply stated that “Since when is a Big 10 Champ[onship anything to gloat about?” Thanks for fixing my single typo in that response but we are now even or you owe me.

Because I thought what I had done is specifically asked you to back up your comments to me. I guess I was wrong, in that I figured you would take a shot at it, and it was my excuse to call you out.

As far as “Get a life”, would that includes me spending my time trolling your teams sport blog for no other reason than slinging poo?
