Richt: Drew ‘very fortunate’ scooter accident wasn’t worse

ATHENS — Another Georgia football player is sidelined with an injury from a motor-scooter accident — the second this summer.

Ray Drew, a highly touted freshman outside linebacker, suffered a separated right shoulder when he lost control of his scooter while returning to his dorm from church on Sunday. He is expected to miss practice until at least next week.

According to Athens-Clarke County Police, the accident occurred when Drew was driving downhill on Baldwin Street around 11:50 a.m., applied his brakes and was ejected from the scooter.

He was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was treated and released. No charges were filed and no other vehicles were involved in the incident, police said.

“Very thankfully, he wore his helmet,” coach Mark Richt said Monday. “He landed on his helmet and his shoulder. Another good thing was the shoulder won’t require any surgery. It was a separation, not a dislocation; the separation was not severe enough to warrant surgery. … He’s very fortunate it wasn’t worse than it was.”

Said Drew, via Twitter: “I’m so glad I don’t look like what I’ve been through … praise God.”

Officially, Georgia director of sports medicine Ron Courson listed Drew’s status as “day-to-day.” Richt said the chances of Drew returning to practice this week are “very slim.”

Many UGA athletes use small, motorized scooters to get around campus.

Tous scooter accident involving a Georgia athlete was the 2009 incident that left baseball player Chance Veazey paralyzed.

In July, defensive end Derrick Lott suffered a deep laceration on his right leg while attempting to park his scooter outside Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. He missed the start of preseason practice but returned last week.

“We’ll look at it and talk about it,” Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said Monday of the athletes’ use of scooters.

“But what’s the alternative?” he added, noting the shortage of parking spaces for cars.

Said Richt: “It’s very difficult for some of these guys to get where they have to get because there is such a short window of time in between class and the tutoring and the study hall and lunch and getting here for treatment and taping and all that. The scooters have allowed those guys to get around, so I’m not ready to say no scooters. But they do need to be careful.”

A five-star prospect from Thomas County Central, Drew had been working as a second-team outside linebacker behind junior Cornelius Washington.

Washington said that he, coincidentally, started riding a scooter on Monday, unaware of Drew’s accident the day before.

“He’s walking around in a sling and what-not,” Washington said of Drew. “I don’t think he’s going to be on a scooter for a while.”

Etc.

Update from Monday’s practice on the injured tailbacks: Richard Samuel remained sidelined with a thigh injury; Isaiah Crowell wasn’t able to do much because of a groin injury; Ken Malcome was back at practice. … Samuel is unlikely to return to practice before next week but Crowell could come back possibly sooner, Richt said. … Offensive lineman Chris Burnette missed practice with a stomach bug. … Offensive lineman Austin Long, who has been sidelined with mononucleosis, was on the field in a green non-contact jersey. He is close to being able to practice, Richt said. … Richt was happy with Monday’s practice, particularly considering it was the first day of fall semester classes. “We’ve continued to have good leadership as far as trying to keep the energy flowing,” he said.

Not so sure it’s time to ban them, but something needs to be done. Have a safety course, sign something, I don’t know.

I must have been living under a rock (or don’t follow UGA athletics much outside of football), because I hadn’t heard what happened to Chance Veazey. How horrible. Very thankful that Ray Drew wasn’t seriously injured, and let him take his time to heal up.

Glad Ray is ok but we have a serious issue at RB heading into Boise. We are not 6 weeks away here. We are two weeks. No Thomas, Samuels not back to th eweek of the game (Having not played th eposition for 2 years), True Freshman missing VALUABLE repetitions at practice, Malcome in and out of practice with injurys. Not overstating it here but this running attack is almost on th everge of being in shambles. CMR is certainly losing some sleep over the injury developments here.

this is a very delicate situation.
On the one hand, you want your student and especially student- athletes to have the freedom to ride something that is easy to park on campus and get them where they need to go in a timely manner.

However, when students are getting injured at a regular rate, steps have to be taken to at least educate these young people on the dangers of driving an exposed light motorized bike.

Ok the cute scooters have ran their course. They had run their course when Veasey had his terrible accident. Time to ban them, because the kids have no sort of training to properly operate them. If the school allows them, at least make the kids take a course similar to a motorcycle driving test required by the state

Why does everybody assume that after the Veasey accident and the one earlier this year, nobody has thought of instructing them about safe operating. I’m guessing they have. We’ve got literally hundred and a half or so athletes driving them all over the place for year now. 3 seems like a pretty low number of accidents to be drawing conclusions that nobody knows what they are doing.

Not real sure it’s really up to the school to allow a man what he can drive to church.

Boise State 222, UGA 0 —–> The beatdown of the year.

After the game, a UGA player who reads, writes, and speaks at a 6th grade level will be interviewed on TV, and millions of viewers will wonder why Mark Richt recruits these dummies and why UGA admits them.

It makes you long for the days when ethical UGA coaches like Wallace Butts and Harry Mehre recruited literate athletes who actually earned serious college degrees.

If you doubt this, go back and read Caleb King’s farewell tweet. The guy couldn’t even write a single coherent sentence. This simpleton should have been sweeping floors somewhere, not enrolled in college.

Face your trailer West in the morning and turn it to face East after 100pm or so…this should keep the sun from shining through your dirty drawers being used as your curtains. You may need to get the other Gay Tors to turn theirs, and will most certainly need to leave some wheels on it .

I would also have them pick up your car that was on blocks, it doesn’t run and is just in the way.

If you would find a job , maybe they would have some AC… take the bus boy over the cook, that way you can sneak some cig breaks in.

Crap, I just remembered, with the Meth Lab, moving that trailer aroind could get real dicey….make sure you have someone sober on hand to supervise, don’t want you hurt before we kick your tails this year.

The UGA bus system is actually a very efficient way to get around campus. I don’t see what the problem is for the athletes to utilize the same system. Even if you live off campus, the ACC bus system gets you to campus stops effectively as well. I used it for four years, and never had an issue getting to where I needed to be on time.

The scooters are used by many students, not just athletes. I’m not sure if they are provided to athletes by the athletic department or not, but I do know that I have seen a lot of students riding them all over campus. Part of the problem is that Athens, is so crowded, and if you try to drive up there, especially on campus, while classes are in, you really have to have a sharp lookout. Not only are scooters everywhere (unlike when I was there in the late 90’s), but people on bicycles are everywhere too, and it’s hard enough dodging other cars, much less bicycles, and scooters. And, you have to do all of this while trying to keep your eyes on the road and off the Milledge Avenue sidewalks…especially during the summer!!!!

Is it against NCAA regs to have the players transported around campus since their schedules are so much tighter than most other people’s??? It just seems to me that their time is consumed with practice, tutoring, taping, class, study, film watching….etc., etc. Can their be an athletic department shuttle???

Not a lot to be optimistic about with the opener less than 3 weeks away. B.S. has an all-american offensive tackle, UGA has none. B.S has 2 high draft choices that are seniors on D.L, UGA has none. B.S. has a 1000 yd. rusher returning, UGA has 2 unproven freshmen, and a linebacker that failed at r.b. his 1st go round. B.S has the best passsing Q.B. in college football returning, that has won big games against quality opponents, UGA has a Q.B. that has never beaten a quality opponent. Don’t think Tenn, or Ga.Tech would qualify as quality now. Oh and did i mention, UGA has the worst safety combo in the SECE, that will have to defend B.S. quick strike passing game. Like i said, not a whole lot to get excited about if you are a UGA fan. Sounds like another Ga.Tech game in 2008 coming. UGA hasn’t slowed down Tech’s running game in 3 years, and I don’t think they will slow down B.S passing attack either. Week 2, if UGA can’t slow down Lattimore, it will be the same result as last year. Nothing says they can do that this year, a bunch of blind UGA fans blogging about how great the team will be, doesn’t make it so. Could be along season for UGA. But hey it’s preseason and every team is undefeated now. So go DAWGS!!

Are any of the other students involved in scooter accidents, or is it just football players? Coach should let the players wear their black helmets from last year when they ride the scooters. Wearing black helmets should improve morale and put them over the top when they are trying to avoid a scooter accident. Seeing a 300 pound player riding a little scooter down a hill and wearing a black helmet should strike fear in anybody who might get in the way.

You could just have the alumni buy them all a car. Wait, the NCAA might have a teeny problem with that.

Seriously, if you are at college and can’t afford a car do you have much choice? Our culture is so automobile oriented that you are forced to have some kind of motorized vehicle. If it is common on campus for students (not just athletes) to have scooters it would be appropriate for the school to offer a safety class.

I’m not in such a good mood this morning concerning my 2011 Dawgs. It’s not the Ray Drew deal which is pathetic and a waste of time talking about. I’m worried about the RB situation which is looking pretty dire. Samuel and Malcolm couldn’t even stay healthy on the damn scout team last year and Crowell missed time playing AA HSF. We have major problems and I think CMR knows it. Practice has been closed however I am betting that Nick Marshall is practicing at RB because I never see stats on him at CB. I’m hoping I’m right. Is it too late to get Ealey back???

How are the WR’s looking? How are the back up OL developments coming along. Any new wrinkles to the offense with our new found talent. How about any Changes in style/technique of our two new coaches. Something besides a scooter wreck marathon.

the scooters are NOT provided by UGA.

W.O.W.

The players buy them. UGA is HUGE (I know a lot of you have never actually been there) and the players have tight schedules, much more so than Suzzy Ugastudent who only has Tues/Thur classes and her sorority meeting on Wednesday nights.

I worked two jobs while I was in undergrad (one at Butts-Mehre) and can tell you that getting around campus on a tight schedule is not easy – not to mention that thereis no bus service to Butts-Mehre and no place to park nearby.

Try going to class, then to tutoring, then walk in the heat to and from a grueling football practice a few times before you complain about the players being lazy.

I am a college professor and have taught at numerous universities. Students (not just athletes as commentors have suggested) everywhere use scooters as an efficient means of transportation, especially on a campus as large as UGA’s. Accidents happen to everyone all the time – on the bus, on foot, on a bicycle – we just don’t hear about them because the students involved are not “news worthy.” Leave these young men alone; they’ll be fine.

The streets of Bermuda are littered with the teeth, hair and hide (and worse) of those that had never ridden a scooter before, but figured it was ‘just like riding a bike’…the problem with those damn things is that people, even students, don’t get enough practice on them before they take to the roads – where all those hills and curbs and big-ol cars and trucks are. There ought to be a rule that nobody rides until they pass some kind of riding test – preferably on a big, open parking lot with plastic cones and stuff – and that players shouldn’t be allowed on a scooter without helmets and shoulder pads…oh yeah, and shin-guards.

If they are held out of a drill its recautionary. Chip reports it like he is there when the only thing he is reporting is what he hears in a press conference. What kind of scooter? Some of these scooters are built with the average euro beatnik in mind. The load capacity on some is less than 200lbs. When a 240lb linebacker (much less a 290lb DE) gets on one and maxes out the shocks, they can become unwieldy. Perhaps the players should keep this in mind when selecting one. Right bike, a little training and some common sense makes these type vehicles very urban, that is cool, practical and efficient. Other than that, wouldn’t it be more fun to be speculating about game plans for BS than debating transportation issues? C’mon sports staff!

Ray Drew was riding his scooter and wrecked it. He got hurt. No one else got hurt. No other scooters were in the wreck. Just one. No cops involved. He had an accident.

Washaun Ealey wrecked a car. He hit a concrete wall in a parking deck. It wasn’t his car. He didn’t have a driver’s license. He left the scene(where the wreck happened) of the accident. He got in trouble with the police.

To tampa, if that’s all you can come back with, it says alot about your football knowledge. You live in the past, just like most UGA fans on this blog. Guess you didn’t see what Boise St. did to Va.Tech at Va.Tech last year. This is not the same Boise St. team UGA played 5 years ago, and this sure as hell isn’t the same UGA team. That UGA team was lights out compared to this bunch. And to make fun of S.C’s team last year is typical of you. Last time i checked, S.C. beat Bama, and Florida. Something UGA couldn’t ever do in the same season. S.C. has the 2 best players in the SEC, and they have a Q.B. that has beaten ranked teams. Add to that the #1 player in High School last year, and probably the best D.L. in the conference, and you have a team that is more talented than UGA’s current team. I know you will never agree to these facts, but until you can come back with facts instead of insults, you are what you are. Another big mouth delusional UGA fan.

Make all the players ride 4-wheelers, especially the big players. They probably don’t fit very well on a 2-wheeled scooter anyway. Golf carts would take up too much space in a campus environment, but a compact 4-wheeled scooter-like vehicle should do the trick to keep these big palookas safe and sound. It worried me sick that Tebow rode around on one of these for 3 years. As a motorcyclist, I can tell you that these are as-or-more dangerous than any of their larger cc cousins. Any scooter rider would be well-advised to at least take the Motorcycle Safey Foundation course, as should any motocyclist: http://online2.msf-usa.org/msf/Default.aspx

Scooter safety is a much bigger issue than just the safey of student athletes. People treat them as if they were “just riding a bike,” when they are actually doing something far more dangerous.

Coach Richt is right to be concerned and should at least require proper training for any of his players. Same goes for the entire student body if they can make it happen.

First they will not ban scooters they are a very practical and efficient means to getting around on campus plus there is the economy factors as well as parking..so get over the ban the scooters. However they do need to require a safety class, I’ve driven cars, trucks, bikes, motorcycles and ATV’s all my life and a couple of weeks ago I tried riding a scooter for the first time and the darn thing nearly got away from me. After about 30 mins I was good to go but they do take some getting used to and this was on a quite street in a neighborhood and not on a busy college campus. There’s too much at risk here to continue allowing athletes to ride on scooters on a crowded campus. One solution – buy a small fleet of golf carts and hire students to drive and transport players to classes/practice. Gives the students a chance to make a few bucks and keep the athletes healthy! The cost would be minimal compared to losing a student/athlete for a season…

Just making up reasons why UGA should win

August 16th, 2011
2:37 pm

Just have a hard time reading some of these bloggers comments. The UGA nation bloggers build up this season like”this” is the year that UGA turns it around. Others making excuses why USC and Boise St. are not going to be very good and will lose to UGA without even a single fact to support their position.

If you think UGA is going to be good, that is fine, but please please be realistic in your comments. But the cardinal sin is to sit there and make up stories that Garcia cannot win the job, that the Drunk QB coach is horrible and that Boise St cannot physically hold up and come into The Dome and win.

Two major points….USC has E. Carolina and E. Carolina is pretty good too. No one doubts that Spurrier is keeping most of his game plan close to the vest and will not speak or show very much to the media and will hold a great deal of their playbook back against the Pirates. Second point, Boise St has one REAL game that counts this fall and UGA fans…it is against Georgia. The difference with Boise and UGA is that Boise needs to win this game in the Dome or they are out of media for the remainder of the year, UGA can lose yet still be the Dome in December for a big game.

So please stop making things sound better at UGA and worse at other schools, it makes you look and sound foolish.

Tampa, once again you failed miserably at defending your argument.Va.Tech won 10 games in a row after the lose to Bosie St. But none of that matters, because you as all other UGA fans keep taking shots at Boise St, and you continue to talk about how awesome UGA was 5 years ago. but you refuse to answer one simple question? What the hell did UGA do last year, and what have they done to think they will beat anybody on their schedule that has a winning record, regardless of who the wins came against. Last time i looked UGA lost to C.Fl., Colorado, Miss.st, i would say that Boise St. could beat all of those teams. Yet you want to make fun of their schedule.Hey brilliant guy, who did UGA beat that won 10 games last year, if you think beating Va.Tech was no big deal? The answer is nobody. ——–

1) We are not making it sound better at UGA than other schools, it just is that way.

2) This is the first time that people EXPECT BSU to win the game. BSU has the target on their back this time. How did they do when they had the target against Nevada?

Based on physical stats, UGA should win. Based on recent history, BSU should win and by a lot. The game isn’t played on either; it’s played on the field. The only time these two teams played, BSU was supposed to win (or at least compete), we won 48-13 and I was drinking bourbon talking to pretty girls by mid fourth quarter. This is eerily reminiscent of that game. UGA had a lot of question marks going into the season and Boise was coming off their biggest win in school history and returning an all everything QB. This game also looks a lot like Hawaii. Physically over matched on both a side of the ball, but their speed was going to kill us and they had a “great” QB.

1) Your QB and his coach are alcoholics. Yeah we had a bad year last year with discipline (red panties and arrests), looks like you have carried that torch nicely for the SEC East though.

2) Your entire argument is based on last year’s team. Have you by chance noticed that a lot of the team is different? We didn’t even fill this year’s 85 man roster with players we recruited. A lot haters like to point out how many players we lost and that only a homer would think their team would get better when all the productive players left, and then in the next breath talk about our 6-7 record. Who again led us to that great 6-7 record? Oh, that’s right, the players that started last year, so in this case it is addition by subtraction.

If you can’t beat a good team last year, and you lost your best 2 w.r’s, your best 2 running backs, and 3 of your best O.l’s, then why would you think they will all of a sudden be so improved? The answer is there is no reason, other than UGA fans think their team is better than everyone else every year. The fact is they aren’t, and they haven’t been in 4 years. The facts are:
USC lost some good defensive players, but they played a ton of young guys last year.
UGA lost some good to great OL to injury and departure.

Here is the question which just seems to defy answering….Where is the offensive production going to come from with UGA?

We have spent this entire summer with the UGA homers whitewashing every single recurring incident from Ealey bolting, to the loss of King, and Thomas, onto Crowell showing up out of shape, to Malcome simply never going to be healthy, to practice starting and now both Samuels and Crowell unable to go thru any live reps? And the usual suspects have been saying “We will be fine”, why? The local media around Crowells high school often discussed that Crowell was injured and missed significant time last season due to injury but the AJC homers simply never reported or mentioned this fact in favor of bellowing “Dream Team”.

In fact, someone {myself} predicted that Crowell was likely to miss some time due to pulls and strains when he reported out of shape. Of course, the resident homers called me a troll and Tech fan for pointing out the obvious?

Now basically UGA is going into the season against two top 15 teams with RBs who have not practiced or been limited to 1/4 speed drills? UGA could not score more than two FGs against a mid-level Conference UGA Central Florida. And that was with the two NFL WRs and a stable of upperclassmen RBs?

What is Bobo going to do with no weapons? Time to punch that panic button.

Let first say I wish Richt the best this season and hope that by the end of next season there is an obvious turn around with the program

You talk about UT, many UT fans know when Cutcliff left, UT was not the same. Fulmer should have been let go way back but leaving him there longer left the program in more mismanagement than Dooly will be able to recover from I fell

Also continuing with the same ol results moves your program nowhere just look now at your example UT

Unfortuantley when UGA ranks #2 in recruiting the past decade behind Souther Cal with the results we have had something has to be addressed

Florida made the move on Zook what was the result
Texas made a move to get Mack Brown what was the result
Oklahoma made a move to get Stoopes what has been the result
USC made the move to get Pete Carrol
Ohio State made the move to get Tressel because they couldnt beat Michigan but 1 time in the 90’s and like us watching FL sat at home and watched Michigan play in the big bowl games and win championships

Texas, Ohio State, USC, Oklahoma sputtered around for a long time until the right coach came into the program

Alabama after Bryant finally found their coach in Stallings then once again struggled to find its coach again in Saban

The point is UGA has the Money, the Recruits, and the Fan Support just as the ones mentioned above.

The question this year is does UGA need to move to a new direction, we will see, but losing to FL every year, 3-9 against top 10 teams, 13-12 in the SEC east since 2005 doesnt cut it for what we are paying this coach

and with the resources he has at his disposal. That is an example of mismanagement

Again I hope Richt has gotten the message this year and hopefully we will see a much improved team

If not UGA has begin the painful process of looking to someone else until we do find that person.

We have the school and resources for what most coaches hope to have. No more excuses

And yes Im willing to sit in the stands and watch us be 8-4, 6-7, 5-7 or whatever until we do

But again hopefully Richt has gotten the memo

To think that a Georgia fan has created a website to fire Mark Richt. They even have a clock running showing the last SEC Title won at UGA. This is too too funny, just like the offensive game plan put together by our current coaching staff.

“Car Crash Stats: There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005. The financial cost of these crashes is more than 230 Billion dollars. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed. About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States — one death every 13 minutes.”

Automobile accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Should we ban the automobile?

These stupid idiots aren’t smart enough to operate motorized vehicles. Maybe Richt needs to get them some rollerblades.

My girlfriend crashed her bicycle on that same hill on Baldwin. I was biking with her at the time. She ended up at St. Mary’s, just like R. Drew. She broke her foot and gashed her head. It’s a dangerous curve that sneaks up on you if you aren’t familiar with the street. That was 2 years ago. Back then, there was a manhole cover, with a huge pothole in the black-top all around the cover, located right as you enter the curve in front of the Blind Pig.

But i notice, at least, that hole has been fixed since then. Still a dangerous street and curve.

Sense of History

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.

Compared to this mountain of sleaze, a few motor scooter accidents is nothing.

@UGA Alumnus: “based on the way most American’s drive, you could say that about pretty much everyone.”

Especially for UGA alumni who don’t know enough to capitalize the first word in a sentence and add incorrect apostrophes. You’re just making the case for how poorly educated UGA alumni are. We certainly can’t expect football players who take remedial studies to be qualified for anything more complicated than mopping floors.

what do scooters and fat chicks have in common? They are both fun to ride but you don’t want your friends to see you on one.

Ohio State players don’t have scooter wrecks because they get cars at scooter prices.

@BroncoBlue. That was just a great throw and catch, Boykin played it perfect, no defense for that. Just like the best quarterbacks will throw picks, the best db’s will get beat, and the best linemen will give up sacks, its football. Anyway you guys don’t have a Riely Cooper on your team. Post a link to uga vs boise, oh yea you guys want to forget that game. Don’t blame ya.

Clear Channel Voice – you must be a Tech Terd. Regardless of the Boise Game – one thing is for sure. The ACC is full of cheating schools and UGA will beat you again this year.

Well, I kinda saw Drew as mostly a backup this year anyway until he learned how the Junkyard worked. Still, B”lousy” State and the Lamecrocks from Spurriertown will need plenty of bite from the Dawgs. Can’t wait until that magic date in Jacksonville though when Drew is plenty healthy and can apply his muscle to making the Gayturd on this circuit eat his words!

Maybe richt can get hot UGA coeds to drive players around campus in rickshaws or mini-coopers.

This whole thing, the article and the comments, has been hilarious and sad to read. I feel bad for the those kids who have had these accidents happen on those scooters-what an embarrassing way to be put on the injured list. I’m not a UGA fan, but for the sake of human decency, I hope that they get better soon and that the rest of those guys who also ride scooters will learn their lesson and be more cautious around campus.

As for the Boise game, just do us a favor when y’all are downtown at the dome- TRY not to trash it too much. I know that is asking a lot of you UGA fans, but us Panthers have to play there like a week later. I understand it’s really exciting playing there because they sell beer and all, but pace yourselves and put the trash in the trash bins like a good doggies. Thanks in advance!
