ATHENS – Another weekend, another scooter crash.

The latest victim is linebacker Ray Drew. The star freshman from Thomasville apparently wiped out on his scooter Sunday coming home from church and suffered a sprained shoulder as a result. UGA announced the accident in a two-sentence news release sent out at 9:01 a.m. Monday morning. The exact extent of Drew’s injuries is unknown but availability for practice is “day-to-day,” according to UGA director of sports medicine Ron Courson.

Drew was a five-star-rated recruiting prospect and high school All-American coming out of Thomas County Central. He’s currently running second-team weakside (or Will) linebacker behind junior Cornelius Washington.

Drew was not available for comment but sent out a tweet on Twitter.com indicating his was going to be OK. “I’m so glad I don’t look like what I’ve been through . . . praise God.”

Defensive end Derrick Lott suffered a gash on his right leg in a scooter accident earlier this summer and was sidelined for a month. Linebacker Chase Vasser had an accident with injuries in the spring of 2010. And, of course, baseball player Chance Veazey was paralyzed after a scooter accident in 2009.

Dozens of football players and other UGA athletes use the small, motorized scooters to zip around campus because they’re easy to park and inexpensive to operate. An area next to the Butts-Mehre football complex is known as “scooter alley” because of the dozens of scooters parked there daily.

The scooters are a sense of entitlement. It allows the players to park in front of all of the buildings and places that the other students aren’t allowed to park. They park them in motorcycle parking. It’s only a matter of time before other students catch on.

The problem with the scooters is that they are getting in the way of the buses, cars, and pedestrians on an already WAYYY overcrowded campus. Plus they’re football players and they ride around like they own the place.

I remember when Mushchamp would drive his little scooter by the KA House and he thought he was so cool. It is an entitlement thing and normally you don’t have a scooter unless you are an athlete. Normal peasants like us had to ride a bus or walk. Anyways, When Muschamp would ride his scooter to the frat house someone would always kick it over. Then after the UF debacle in which Chris Doering lit him up for about 200 yard recieving at Sanford Stadium we never saw him again on that scooter.

I hadn’t heard that.

UK has “Wildcat Lodge” where the basketball players live but there are some general population students in there. It sure helps having 1 place where the b-ball coaches can go to check curfews etc.

Schmeck Dawg is right- worst move the NCAA made was the elimination of athletlic dorms.

Back in th day when they had “the Mac” (McWhorter Hall) there were a lot less incidents because there were grad asst’s and coaches performing bed checks and as I recall there were grad asst’s posted at the entrances to make sure athletes were following curfew rules and not sneaking out, and off campus living previledges were limited to Jrs and Srs only and even then they had to meet certain criteria for that.

Kind of hard for any coach to be responsible for the whereabouts of 85 players when they are scattered across multiple campus dorms and in apts around their respective college towns.

Here’s an idea. At the beginning of every summer have someone from cycle world come in and do a scooter safety class. I’m 100% serious. The reason there are so many accidents is becuase these kids don’t know how to ride them properly. It wouldn’t count as a practice, and I’m sure it could be arrainged for free.

Cynthia Tucker is a Pulitzer Prize winner, and whether you agree with her politics or not, she will be a fine addition the the Journalism School. To “Nothing Could Be Finer”. Because Georgia runs a 3-4 defense. A kid that plays DE in a 4-3, plays OLB in a 3-4. A player that would play DT in a 4-3 plays DE in a 3-4. Then, you have to have a mountain of a man at NT like Mount Cody. Georgia has two of those this year.

Cell phones and scooters

August 15th, 2011
10:54 am

I suspect that the problem is not scooters alone. I am guessing that cell phone uesage AND driving a scooter is THE problem. I see pedestrians talking on two cell phones often, I see motorists driving with a cell at their ear and see cells in use all over, even on golf courses.

I suspect that UGA football players are no different than these examples and that in Athens scooter accidents are happening often ………………… some plain UGA student will not garner the news like a 5 star frosh would.

For accuracy …………..sure would like to learn the total accident number for UGA students, including jocks. UGA campus police keep these stats as does the Athens PD. Merge the numbers and there you have it.

They just did not have Twitter, Facebook or TMZ back then to update your status at that juncture. Let’s assume these are 49cc scooters, so that the riders don’t need insurance, plates or a motorcycle license.

Has anyone ever looked at the weight limit of these things? They’re usually around 220lbs or so. Of course a heavier rider can use it, but performance (speed, handling, etc…) will be diminished.

Sure these people need Scooter 101, but also, they just might be too big for their little scooters.

I’m finding it hard to believe all you people are opposed to McKinney at UGA. As a parent, I want my child to be exposed to all points of view. If I’ve done my job as a parent, they will adhere to my values, but they deserve to hear all sides of an issue. Again, that’s what a good education is all about. I don’t agree with her politics either, but I want my child to hear all sides of an issue. You must not have much confidence in your kids if you think one journalism professor is going to make them a liberal. That’s just stupid. If you want your kids to receive a one-sided education, send them to Bob Jones University, Liberty University, or Oral Roberts University. UGA is a state institution and should reflect all views. There ARE liberals in GA, after all who want their side represented just like conservatives want their side represented. If our kids are going to compete nationally and internationally, then they must receive a well rounded education. I can’t imagine an intelligent person thinking anything less. Go Dawgs!!!

Ban life! – - it happens folks! Each person is responsibile to live safely and not threaten the well being of others. The injured lad will hopefully be all right. Bikes are safer than scooters

August 15th, 2011
11:57 am

On a bike you can’t hit 45 mph with twist of the throttle. Since it takes a lot more effort to get up to speed on a bike, a good bicycle will tend to pay more attention to what’s going on around them. I would doubt that these guys are the safest and most careful scooter riders..probably not wearing helmets. A 350 Lb guy on a bicycle is gonna hit maybe 20 mph on a bicycle while he’s gonna be going 50 on a scooter.

It looks like we need to start using some of our practice time learning how to drive a scooter. Here’s a breakdown of our next practice:

8:00 – 8:30 Making a Turn
8:30 – 9:00 Signalling
9:00 – 9:15 Break (this is mentally exhausting for most of the players)
9:15 – 9:30 Keeping proper distance between scooter in front of you (most likely a fellow teammate)
9:30 – 10:00 Braking (and not waiting until the last second!!!)
10:00 – 10:30 Signalling (most players have forgotten how to signal by now)
10:30 – 11:00 Review (most players need to have everything repeated – several times)

Scooters are no more dangerous than bikes. I rode a bike to and around campus because it weas the fastest way to get from class to class. Parking was so far away and the buses were slow so weather permitting the bicycle was the way to go. I still ride and have had 2 pretty good wipeouts over the years that caused minor injuries like with Ray Drew who I am sure will be more careful and learn from this mistake like all young people learning to drive. He’ll be fine and let those scooters roll and the Big Dawg Eat. Part of college life.

Forget the indoor practice facility, we need cedar chips on all surfaces used by the football team including existing practice locations, Sanford Stadium playing surface, classrooms, and all pathways and walkways used to transverse these locations. Also, UGA should lobby for the redesign of the modern football field. We must remove sharp edges created by yard lines intersecting at 90 degree angles with boundary lines of the field. I have no idea what the solution should be but we must find an answer before it is too late!

If any of you had followed Ray’s recruitment, you’d know that he’s a humble, polite, young man, and I can assure you that if he had a choice, he would never be involved in an accident and miss practice and an opportunity to play with his team.

Ray has been driving for several years, so if he felt comfortable driving the scooter, the I suggest everyone give him the benefit of the doubt and just call this an unfortunate accident; wishing him well; hoping for a full recovery and speedy recovery so he can rejoin his team mates. times have changed, for sure.when i was a frosh a uga, a ‘rule’ known as in loco parentis held sway.
that meant ‘parent in the location.’ the university was ‘parent.’ freshmen men and women had to live in a freshman/woman dorm. for men it was reed hall or the dorm next door. no apartments; no cars. women had to be in their dorm by 1030 pm on weekdays and, as i remember, by midnight on weekends. house mother stood at the door; lateness meant grounding for some period of time. women could not wear shorts on campus. athletes lived in what we called the ‘animal’ house dorm over on ag hill. mcwhorter. not in regular dorms. dean tate knew every man, and transgressions of a serious nature warranted a call to parents, or worse. in loco parentis went the way of the dodo bird looooooooong ago. for better or worse. now anything goes. mr. richt and his staff have really only limited powers to control the lives of their players. they are still teens, most of them, but are assumed to be adults. they aren’t, of course. but that is the way it is. like it or lump it.

OK you bike and bus proponents. How many of you get up at 5 AM for workouts, then go to practice and beat one another up, then take a mid day break, then go back out in 100 degree heat to beat one another up again, then run gassers till you puke while still taking some classes so you can play a game that entertains the masses and brings in multiple millions of dollars to your university while you get a few lousey bucks a month and the use of a scooter to help your tired and beat up legs. What do you bikers do? Ride your bike to class, study hard, take naps, chase chicks, and drink beer the rest of the day? Yeah, that’s tough. Get real. The players work hard for UGA and have earned the stinking scooters, and accidents will happen.

Nothing Could Be Finer: Dude, you need to learn a little about football before you post. WLB (in particular) and SLB in a 3-4 is sort of a tweener position between a 4-3 DE and OLB and often play more of a rush end position and often even have there hand in the ground (see, e.g., almost every play by Justin Houston last year). They rarely, if ever, guard a slot receiver. In a 3 receiver set, you will likely see a 3-3 or 4-2 front (with Drew or whoever moved up to 4th DL) and an extra CB. If not, it will likely be a zone look or the FS covering.

Drew has way to much to lose to be doing anything that is dangerous. He is plenty old enough to drive a scooter if he wants but the question is should he take that risk. I majored in Risk Management at UGA and depending on what is going on in my life presently sets what my priorities are and will do things or stop doing things depending what take precedence. I know it saves a lot of money and totally makes sense but it’s one thing that you have no control over your outcome of getting to one place safe or not. Get real. Other students do ride scooters. The idea that scooters “get in the way of buses, cars” etc. is absurd. Cars get in the way on campus. There should be more bikes and scooters and less cars and trucks on all of Athens’ roads, including UGA’s campus. How could a scooter possibly be “a sense of entitlement?” So riding a lowly scooter puts students above the rich kids in their BMWs and SUVs?

Learn the rules of the road. Bikes and scooters have as much right to the road as cars and SUVs. It’s gas guzzling cars that are destroying the planet and causing oil dependency to terrorist nations.

The players are doing us all a favor by riding scooters (whether they realize it or not). But these young kids clearly need to take a course in scooter safety.

Why is it that the car (in the mind of the driver) gets the rule of the road in this backward country? There are way more irresponsible and dangerous car drivers on the road than scooter and bike riders. Automobiles kill more people in this country than anything else. The leading cause of death is the automobile. People hate bikes and scooters and pedestrians because they make you 60 seconds late to picking up your Big Mac and fries at the local grease hole.

Car drivers think they should be able to drive 10 mph over the speed limit on every road they’re on. Get use to it. Bikes and scooters have the legal right to the road… As much legal right, and more moral right, than cars.

President Adams is well aware of the issue having visited Chance Veazey @ Shepherd Center. He, Greg McGarity, Ron Courson and the entire sports staff have ratcheted the program of Scooter safety. You can never get inside all those 18 to 20 year old heads. Some accidents are simply the fault of others which was the case with Chance Veazey.

Who’s paying for the scooters? Is it in the athletic dept budget? Do athletes from other sports have access to them? What about your average student? Whats the average cost of the scooters, I may want one? Are they required to have tags? Do you have to have a valid driver’s license to operate them?

I think there is a bit of an over-reaction to the Tucker hire. I personally wouldn’t hire her to clean my pool (depending on what she wore to do it I suppose) but I don’t run a J-school. I’m guessing she would have to stand in a pretty long line to qualify as the most liberal professor on that campus.

She “should be able to teach how to produce an article, film a story, even write an incredibly biased editorial if a student got a job to do that, without corrupting clear minded young adults in the process. I am fully confident that my kids wouldn’t come home with her view from taking her class. In fact, I believe she would only prove to be a stark contrast is she tried. Plus, I actually think boundaries have been set..

(just doesn’t seem like a PR smart hire to me)

Those players use to all have cars, but we stopped that. Now they have to carry those signed jerseys to the tat parlor on those scooters.

Hey coach are you sure that what you actually said was ” I get to ride all the “scooter” I want on campus”?

On the hiring of Cynthia Tucker, if you didn’t already know that M. Adams is a left-wing nut job, who is unable to walk out on the field in Sanford Stadium without being booed and cursed, then you might not understand. I am told that the UGA School of Journalism did not have anyone to teach Commie 101 and Cynthia applied for the job.

Regarding the Pulitzer Prize, the list of winners looks like a Who’s Who of Failed Socialist Governments we have known and loved…, and would include the one Jimmy Carter. When they hang Cynthia’s photo on the Socialist Wall of Let’s-Try-This-One-More-Time-Surely-It-Will-Work-This-Time, her photo will be just to the left of Jimmy’s and Barack’s…

We have to pay so much tuition. I hate having to pay for my kid to listen to American Hater: C Tucker, but with Adams in charge, this doesn’t shock anymore. C.Tucker, my kid will carry a recorder in your class…….You trash my country too much and I will do all in my power to kick your axx out.

Must not be that great of an athlete if he can’t even ride a scooter without falling over.

I guess its hard to take advantage of a free education at UGA. maybe you’re right and these idiots should get paid.

Seems that every other post is an over-reaction to the scooters. Three football players in two years…far as I can tell. I bet there’s been WAY more injuries to the student population overall on bicycles during those two years. I’d even bet there’s been people injured on the campus buses.

Chance Veazey was paralyzed after a scooter accident in 2009. That’s sad and terrible. But banning scooters is a little overboard. Someone also seems to think the ath-a-letic dept pays for the scooters. Not.

One of the funniest is, “…they get in the way of buses and cars…on an already overcrowded campus…” Oh, the irony!

I’m just saying, don’t over-react. Just wish Mr Drew well and a speedy recovery. (And…how’d C.Tucker get mixed up in this?!)

Said Richt: “It’s very difficult for some of these guys to get where they have to get because there is such a short window of time in between class and the tutoring and the study hall and lunch and getting here for treatment and taping and all that. The scooters have allowed those guys to get around, so I’m not ready to say no scooters. But they do need to be careful.”

we gators have decided to help out with the uga slush funds and start taking contributions to help buy all dumb dawg football players scooters.

have to ask though…. what is the deal with 5 star athletes not being able to chew gum and drive a freakin scooter at the same time. only a dawg would have that problem.
