ATHENS – Another weekend, another scooter crash.
The latest victim is linebacker Ray Drew. The star freshman from Thomasville apparently wiped out on his scooter Sunday coming home from church and suffered a sprained shoulder as a result. UGA announced the accident in a two-sentence news release sent out at 9:01 a.m. Monday morning. The exact extent of Drew’s injuries is unknown but availability for practice is “day-to-day,” according to UGA director of sports medicine Ron Courson.
Drew was a five-star-rated recruiting prospect and high school All-American coming out of Thomas County Central. He’s currently running second-team weakside (or Will) linebacker behind junior Cornelius Washington.
Drew was not available for comment but sent out a tweet on Twitter.com indicating his was going to be OK. “I’m so glad I don’t look like what I’ve been through . . . praise God.”
Defensive end Derrick Lott suffered a gash on his right leg in a scooter accident earlier this summer and was sidelined for a month. Linebacker Chase Vasser had an accident with injuries in the spring of 2010. And, of course, baseball player Chance Veazey was paralyzed after a scooter accident in 2009.
Dozens of football players and other UGA athletes use the small, motorized scooters to zip around campus because they’re easy to park and inexpensive to operate. An area next to the Butts-Mehre football complex is known as “scooter alley” because of the dozens of scooters parked there daily.

If this young brother had hired me to negotiate his signing bonus, he wouldn’t be driving some cheap scooter.

I like his quote about praising god for only having a sprained shoulder. Does he also praise god for causing the wreck in the first place.

Why is it that the car (in the mind of the driver) gets the rule of the road in this backward country? There are way more irresponsible and dangerous car drivers on the road than scooter and bike riders. Automobiles kill more people in this country than anything else. The leading cause of death is the automobile. People hate bikes and scooters and pedestrians because they make you 60 seconds late to picking up your Big Mac and fries at the local grease hole.
Car drivers think they should be able to drive 10 mph over the speed limit on every road they’re on. Get use to it. Bikes and scooters have the legal right to the road… As much legal right, and more moral right, than cars.

kevin, the way it works for most Christian is that they thank God when an accident caused by own negligence only amounts to minor injuries. It’s somewhere between devine intervention and just a common expression of luck. They don’t praise God for gravity.

LowerAL Dawg, I’m a upperAL Dawg from Muscle Shoals. I lived in Lower Alabama (Daleville) for 17 years and I agree with you I almost killed myself on my scooter the first day I aquired it. UGA does need to provide training on how to operate a scooter and make them take a test to show they know how. GO DAWGS

You are SO WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People riding bikes have almost killed me on multiple occassions. And the reason that “automobiles” kill more people is that you have complete morons riding bikes and scooters thinking that they have complete control of the road. Not only to mention that hundreds of millions of people drive motorized vehicles instead of bikes (meaning cars, trucks etc.).
Lead, move, or get the hell out the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again, a report on how a young man ( who is a good guy) has an accident. Those things happen. Get over it.
However the Dawgsinlexs, Altamahadoggies, and others who come on here and spout off dribble they have read at everything dawgs.com spews as the gospel, and that all things UGA are greater than everywhere else are just full of garbage fit for the landfill.
4 YEARS of pitiful play from our team and we just keep sucking on the teat from the nuggets that CMR hands out, and we are suppose to keep buying his used car salesman routine and wimpy sandwich of buy my thoughts today and I will repay you on game day.

These guys need to realize that little scooters and big people are a bad match – those things are not safe. As for Cynthiqa Tucker – the fact that she won a Pulitzer prize says more about the fall of that award than anything else I can imagine. Her writing is hardly what I would call upper tier and I make that comment without regard to her questionable logic concerning politics.

Does a visiting professor get paid full time or only when she teaches? She can not gain tenure can she? I bet the article saying that AJC let her go to do this job, really meant to say, they were so glad to give her away, they paid for her move there. I wonder if the subscriptions t AJC will go up, now that she is away from the paper.

I hope there is a scooter school for safety purposes! I work for a retirement community, and we have a policy that even the seniors have to attend scooter school for safety on their inhouse scooters! And, if not , there should be a requirement ( nationwide!) for riders safety and awareness!

Ummmm… a 290 lb man on a tiny scooter, going down a hill. Hmmmm… Let me guess. I bet he had braking issues. Kinda like trying to break a ten speed, or whatever speed bike when it rains. This accident was not due to stupidity, but because these scooters, and big football players is not a match made in Heaven. Quite simply, get these guys to make sure they have a scooter rated for someone of their size, if such even exists. If not, and all scooters are the same, then maybe scooters aren’t the best mode of transportation for some of the bigger guys on the team.

All right thinking football fans are outraged about the liberal Cynthia Tucker. Puts UGA in a bad light. As for scooters and bikes having the right of way, I believe that is what they put on your tombstone when a car driver does not respect your “rights”. Here i am 6 feet under, but I swear I had the right of way. Yes, a moral victory only. I prefer to stay on top of the dirt rather than have a moral victory. Those guys are way to big and way to VALUABLE to ride scooters.

Most of these UGA dummies simply don’t have the brains to operate a motorized vehicle. And most of them don’t have a valid driver’s license anyway.
Who cares, after they leave Athens, they’ll be pushing a shopping cart or a broom, neither of which is motorized.

If it happens again…Its time to injure Richts feelings by showing him the door. Sick and Tired of these articles at the start of every season the past 3 or 4 years. Fine publish them but these should not be used to excuse anything!!! Every team in the nation has such problems. Get over it and GATA on gameday or take the excuses to Western Carolina or somewhere.

Many students ride scooters other than atheletes. Hope he gets well soon and learns from this incident.
Remember Cynthia Tucker from many years ago when she first worked at AJC, she covered an incident at my workplace and the article was completely one sided and the same agenda she has continued. Shame on Adams for such a hire. Would never happen with the opposite agenda.

Come on guys. They may be kids but they are also grown men. If they want to ride a Harley or a Scooter is none of our affair. You’re only young once so I say have the time of your life while you still can. If I were an athlete and a school told me that I couldn’t ride this or that, then I would say goodbye. Sure there are schools out there that wouldn’t mind me riding my scooter.

We in this country cannot afford censorship whether we agree or disagree with it. Sme for the whole SCOOTER crap. We cannot go around censoring who can and cannot ride them. I disagree with Tucker completely but I am far from censorship. When we begin that, Von Trap, is when we begin down the road you insinuate.
