UGA freshman WR Malcolm Mitchell ‘a little bit’ surprised by quick success

Here are some excerpts from interviews I had with freshman offensive players on Friday:

WR MALCOLM MITCHELL, VALDOSTA

  • On impact he’s having so far: “I’m just trying to work hard and get better each and every day. We had a competitive day and I just wanted to show the team I was all in and work as hard as I can.”
  • On whether he has surprised himself: “I did a little bit. It’s a lot different than high school. It’s a lot more difficult. Coach Ball, a lot of other assistant coaches, are helping me grasp the concepts of what I need to do and everything.
  • On adjustments he must make: “In high school the tempo is a lot slower. So catching up with the pace, that’s the biggest difference. And knowing what I need to do. You want to get to the line and know it and not have to think it and stuff like that.”

TE JAY ROME, VALDOSTA

  • On college football life: “It’s all been a great experience since I made it here in June, going through Coach T’s workouts during the summer, waking up every day trying to get better. Probably the biggest thing from high school is the tempo and the playbook. The playbook is just a whole lot bigger and takes up a lot of time.”
  • To redshirt or not to redshirt? “If it’s possible for me to get on the field in any kind of way this year, then I’d love to do that. But if I would get redshirted it wouldn’t be a big deal. It’d give me another year to work harder and get better.”
  • Relationship with other tight ends: “I’m real lucky to have Orson Charles and Aron White and Arite Lynch, who have all been here for a few years. They’ve all taken me in and are calling me little borhter and are helping me do everything I need to do. Any time I do anything wrong they come to me and not in a bad way, but to encourage m,e and to help me out. So it’s been a great experience.”
  • Where he might play: “I’m not really sure where I’ll be fitting in. Anywhere I can help the Bulldogs out this year is where I’ll be and I’ll gladly be there.”

OT WATTS DANTZLER, DALTON

  • Strength and conditioning: “I actually go down to 295 pounds from a high of 335 right after football season last winter. I went to a good diet and got down to about 295 and then worked back up trying to put on some good muscle.”
  • Toughest Bulldog to block: “Jarvis [Jone] is really good, [DeAngelo] Tyson is really good. Cornelius [Washington], Reuben [Faloughi], they’re all good.”
  • Left or right tackle: “The first few days I was going left and right but now I’m just going left tackle mainly.”
  • Pressure to perform: “Yeah, there’s a lot of pressure. I’m just trying to learn as much as I can and get better each day. Left tackle is a tough position, but Coach Friend believes in me and he’s pushing me hard, so I’m just trying to get better each day.”
  • Redshirt or not: “If it helps the team out that I don’t play a snap, that’s great with me. I just want the team to be as good as it can be and win as many games as possible.

QB MICHAEL TAMBURO, SUWANEE (transfer from Boise State)

  • Drive from Boise to Atlanta: “We made a three-day trip out of it, me and my father. It was actually pretty fun. We stopped in Denver, then St. Lous, then back to Georgia.”
  • Playing old team with new team in first game: “Yeah, it’s definitely going to be an interesting experience. I’m excited for it. It should be a good game. Boise State’s is going to have a great team this year.”
  • On divulging secrets: “I haven’t gotten into anything like that at all and I don’t think that’s Coach Richt’s style. None of the coaches have approached me. Right now I’m just trying to worry about the system and learning the plays as an offensive player.”

I don’t know if our strength training is getting any better, but our media training definitely is.

Or maybe these kids simply came in with a very different attitude than some of their recently departed predecessors?

From JJ (both) down to the true freshman.. what an attitude change in Athens. Team 1st attitude will transfer to success on the field—and their talent level is a step up from the norm in Athens. GOOOOO DAWGS!

The question that dawg fans need to be asking Mark Richt is why he ever recruited some of the low class punks that he did.

Sorry, Francis, obviously not everyone is as high-class as you. Please fill us in on how to win without giving some borderline kids a chance? CMR has helped many young men — some of them who were borderline — make better people of themselves. Sometimes it doesn’t work out. Enjoy your personal sanctimony.

Francis, Statments like you made show that you have NO clue about college spotrs especially recruiting. Do you not know that these “punks” were recruited by every major college in the country? Statments like the one you made show a total lack of knowledge!

For the same reasons the coach of your team recruited them. Moron troll.

How is it possible that a program like Georgia can find itself down to 77 scholarships? and be as thin at RB and OL as we are?. Its like we’ve been on probation but we dont have the championship to show for it. Richt better hope that we have the most remarkable run of injury free football in history…or he’s history.

It looks to me like a new attitude on the team which is wayy overdue IMHO. They talk the talk. If they walk the walk it will prove to be a good team. It is an attitude I haven’t seen on the team since 05, maybe 04. It does transcend on the the field it it exists.

Like the new TEAM attitude. I believe these Dawgs will play with focus and intensity, and believe that with this renewed attitude and S and C program, won’t fold in the 4th quarter. A winning season remains to be seen, but I like our chances for a good win / loss record! I’m looking forward to going to the Dome on Sept. 3rd to see the 2011 kickoff against the Broncos. I’m sure they won’t, but Boise St. better not sleep on UGA. .. Go Dawgs! (Typing on a BlackBerry. Pardon any errors.)

My one concern

August 13th, 2011
9:31 am

My big concern about UGA this year is simply a lack of bodies for the offensive line. The SEC is a line play league. If we are not talented and deep, then we could lose any game in this league and we are losing 50% of our SEC games now for this one reason.

The GT game illustrated this fact so clearly. UGA for last two years has not been much on the D/O lines and we still handled GT, who in their silly lil girl league is only a gimmick team. Yes, they won in 08 because MS threw a TD pic and Samuel fumbled a k.o. and they scored one or two plays later from the 12? Fluke that was. 1-9 proves that it was a fluke.

NO, if UGA is ever to return to top of the SEC (top 4) then we had better recruit O and D linemen in huge numbers. Otherwise, 5-7 or 7-5 teams will result. Flankers and QBs and R back and D backs are very important, but w.o. the beef, we are wasting our time in this BIG BOY league trying to be a finess team FSU, ala the 1990s.

Dantzler dropped 40LBs to rebuild with good muscle! Now that is dedication. I see this kid having a motor like David Polloack did. He really wants to be a bulldog and let his play honor his late father. There’s been too many GA kids in the past that wanted to be bulldogs and were good enough, but we just did not offer. I’m expecting good things out of this young man.

Actually, if you are going to be down on the attitude of the recently departed players, you need to look back a class or two beyond. That’s who teaches them what is expected. These news kids would develop just as much “ok don’t go full out and you won’t make anybody look bad” attitude as them if the core group here hadn’t corrected that.

“My one concern” @ 9:31AM….

I believe we’ve had several top 10 recruiting classes under CMR and Gardner.

Back in February….”Herschel Walker became the latest to chime in on Georgia’s recruiting class. “How about that Dawgs ‘Dream Team’ Coach Mark Richt recruited?” Walker posted Thursday evening on Twitter. “We finally kept our Georgia boys at home. Nice job Coach.” Walker previously had expressed concerns about elite prospects leaving the state.”

Are you saying too that Jenkins, Danzler and Drew aren’t “beef”? I believe we signed eight linemen this past class. Not to mention, CMR has stated that linemen are a priority for 2012. Attrition happens…to all programs.

Yes, we’re a little thin at O line; but it’s not for lack of recruiting effort.

3 weeks till kickoff and 4 weeks for the NFL. I am slowly dying inside…lol I can’t wait until the real games start so rational, logical discussions can be had about CMR, BoBo, the coaching staff, the entire team and the program, the freshmen, IC, Malcolm Mitchell, Jarvis Jones, Ray Drew, can we beat Florida, an we get to the Dome, etc. Until then, we are just farting in the win.

It is interesting to me that Tamburo could find a place on the mighty bulldogs roster but can’t even sniff the practice field in the WAC, and you guys are talking about winning the east. Believe me tamburo has no secrets to give because he barely stepped on the field in Boise, he was at the at the bottom of the depth chart his whole stay in Boise. Besides Boise has a new OC this year so even “CMR” doesn’t know what they are going to bring, those fatties on the front lines will be worked over by a quick and tough defensive line and offensive line, lean strong and quick.

I just hope the opener with Boise State is a good, competitive game. Boise should definitely be favored and has a very good team, as they have proven over the last several years. BS finds a way to win games whereas UGA has found ways to lose games. If it is close then UGA has the edge with the kicking game. I certainly don”t expect the same type of game as the last time the two teams played, but it would be nice!

Plus one, If I were CMR there would be a Gator with a Bulldog it it’s mouth put on the helments and the guys would have to wear it until they earned the right to have it removed. It’s long past time the tide turned on the Georgia Florida game. As for playing in Jacksonville anybody that wants to use that for an excuse for Georgia losing is full of bull.

The best QBs, RBs, WOs, and TEs are nothing without an good OL. These young guys talk a good line but so did others before them . Time will tell if it translates both on and off the field.

Looking forward to this year and as always, I look for UGA to run the table this year.

If the coaches don’t ask Tamburo anything, fine. Got no problem with that. It would not be ethical to do that anyway.

If he wants to volunteer tactical information such as tendencies while in certain formations, that is totally up to him. And that would be okay I think.
