***UPDATED***

ATHENS — Georgia freshman tailback Isaiah Crowell is battling a groin injury that severely limited his participation in Friday’s practice, the Bulldogs’ 10th of preseason camp.

However, both Crowell and UGA head coach Mark Richt insist that the injury is not serious and should not significantly hamper Crowell’s preparation for the No. 22-ranked Bulldogs’ season opener against No. 7 Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome in three weeks.

“It’s not really that serious,” said Crowell, speaking to reporters Friday for the first time since arriving at UGA. “It was just weak or whatever, but it’s not serious.”

Crowell was not dressed in a green jersey, which signifies an injured player. However, he moved slowly and gingerly through the Bulldogs’ drill work early in practice and actually stood to the side for several of them. Occasionally he would limp noticeably and his left thigh was heavily wrapped in an ace bandage underneath his pants. See THIS VIDEO posted by our friends at DawgTime.com,

“It’s a groin that’s bothering him,” Richt said. “We don’t think there was a pull. But if you get enough practices in a row and going live and all that stuff, sometimes you wake up in the morning and you just can’t go full speed. So that’s what happened with him. We shut him down today. It’ll be day-by-day. We’ll see how he feels.”

Given the Bulldogs’ precarious situation at tailback, any injury at that position could be perceived as cause for alarm. Redshirt freshman Ken “Boo” Malcome, who was already hampered with a groin injury, did not attend Friday’s practice because “he’s not feeling too good,” Richt said. Richt was not specific other than to say it was “not a concussion.”

Meanwhile, former walkon tailback Brandon Harton — he was just awarded a scholarship Thursday night — just returned from a real concussion and remained in green on Friday. That left the Bulldogs with recently-converted tailback Richard Samuel and Carlton Thomas, who is suspended for the opening game.

For what it’s worth, Thomas had “a really nice day of competition” and Samuel had the run of the day in Friday’s full-contact workout.

“It was the first play of [teamwork] and he ran over a cornerback and kept on trucking for about another 30 yards or so,” Richt said. “That was a big run for him.”

Later it was learned that Samuel suffered a strained quad during the practice and he, too, is listed as “day-to-day.”

Meanwhile, the buzz of the day Friday was it was the first opportunity for reporters to interview Crowell since he’s been on UGA’s campus. As was consistent of his personality throughout recruiting, Crowell was a man of few words but also of quiet confidence. He actually addressed the fact that he’s not one ramble on with his answers.

“I don’t like speaking but I know I have to,” he said while sitting on a stool in a scrum of reporters and TV cameras.

Some of the “highlights” from Crowell’s 15-minutes session with the media:

  • On the thrust of attention: “I think I’ve handled it well. I don’t let it get to me. I try to keep a level head. That’s what I do.”
  • On his goals for the season: “I just want to get out on the field and help my team win. That’s the main thing for me.”
  • His favorite moment so far: “Being out there practicing and the scrimmage at Sanford Stadium.”
  • Not really. I just want to do whatever God wants me to do. I don’t really look at it like that (referencing question about Latt and Dyer).
  • Biggest adjustment: “Really the hardest thing for me has been like time management and waking up early. I’m not a morning person and that has been the hardest thing for me. Physically it hasn’t been that hard for me. I feel like I fit right in.”
  • Does he feel weight of expections: “No sir. I don’t really think about it a lot. My coach is always telling me I’m not the savior. I’m just coming out here and working hard and trying to help my team.”
  • On influence of strength coach Thomas Brown: “He’s helped me work out and has kept me motivated with the different things we’re doing and he’s helped me learn the ins and out of Athens.”
  • On advice he got from Herschel Walker: “He was telling me to keep a level head and work hard and help my team work hard and do whatever I could to help my team.”
  • On notoriety around campus: “I get recognized a little. I try to not stay out too much because I know people might know who I am. That’s the main thing. I try to stay [cordoned] off.”
  • On who has delivered the biggest hit on him. “No one has really hit me that hard. Not yet I don’t think.”
  • Whether he can have similar impact as Marcus Lattimore last year: “I think I can. I think Lattimore had a great season last year. He helped his team a lot. I think I can do the same.”
  • On being heavily counted on: “I expected to play and everybody to look up to me. I knew I had to be a leader and work hard for everybody to follow me. I expected that.”
  • On the grind of preseason camp: “It’s a lot of work and it’s tiring and it’s hard. But I love football and I’ve been doing this all my life, so it’s fun to me.”
  • How much of playbook he’s mastered: “Like 90 percent. I know most of what I’m doing. I’ve just got to learn a few more things in there and I’ll be set.”
  • On rumors he showed up out of shape with bad attitude: “I heard all that but there’s wasn’t nothing to it. People are going to say what they want to say.”

Left thigh wrapped probably means he strained a quad or has a deep thigh bruise.

At least it is not a season ending injury like Davis the RB for Arkansas. Gotta feel bad for that kid. He was a player

If you dawg fans thought that Crowell was going to make it through an SEC season behind a suspect thin OLine ALL season without missing some game(s) you’re all nuts. Lattimore didn’t even make it through a whole season unscathed.

This is where losing Ealy and King hurts, no matter their attitude or whatever else, they could still tote the rock. Now Boo Malcome is hurt (SURPRISE!) and Richard “Rock Dropper” Samuel are the only things backing up an injured Crowell. It IS going to happen. Crowell is going to miss time this year. It happens to most every freshman RB, especially behind patchwork Olinemen, not to mention in the undoubtedly toughest conference to play in defensively. Monsters on SEC defenses.

Just prepare yourselves is all I am saying. You don’t lose your top rushing RB’s in the same offseason and come unscathed on the legs of a freshman. Not even USCe could rely on Lattimore for that last year.

What’s up with all the hammy problems. Not an insinuation, just a question, but aren’t hammy pulls or strains usually a sign of lack of running (conditioning)? Or did I just dream I once read that?

Hope Crowell will be ready to go against Boise. But if not, we have Samuel and I’m not sure there are a lot of guys looking forward to tackling a tailback that is 6-2, 245lbs. and running at a 4.5 40 pace. That is a lot of force. Sound the air horn when Samuel gets the carry. No panic here. The panic should be on the other sideline.

Coach Richt hasn’t commented
He is not in a green jersey
His thigh is wrapped

If his calf was wrapped, maybe its a hamstring

Sounds minor to me but we all need to wait and see

The kid will be OK. Minor injuries are common for new guys, when they first start practicing. He is being asked to do an awful lot for such a young man, and he probably over did it a bit. He will be up and running for the Smurf team game, and although I am not sure he will get 30 carries in the game, he will be coached to let the Smurf teams defense over pursue and then take off with the football. If Figgins or samuels is in front of him, the field will be littered with these little blue swatches of smurf.

For the one millioneth time – the starting offensive line is not patchwork or whatever adjective you wish to use. All of those guys are players and will be fine. The problem is depth, which is much different. Depthwise UGA could potentially be in trouble on the Oline if there are injuries, but the starters are just fine and ready to do battle. As for BSU fans, I would think you guys have enough trouble in Blueland to worry about than coming on a UGA blog and worrying about our team. UGA had to deal with an AD problem just before the season began last year and I don’t remember that working out so well for us.

This is exactly why I agree with more college coaches closing practice, all practices – Spring Training, Summer Camp and Regular Fall practices, to all outside observers. Coaches can not stop practice for every injury or potential injury, they keep doing their job and let the training staff do theirs. After practice the Training Staff reports to the Coaching Staff and if any announcement is necessary they make it then. Until then there is no news that can be reported, it is all speculation and serves no real purpose.

JB…How is stating my thoughts “taking shots at UGA”. I am not taking shots. I am not a UGA fan nor a GT fan. I got no dawg (pun intended) in the fight. I am just a college football fan.

All I have said on this blog are 1). It’s unlikely Crowell goes an entire SEC schedule as a freshman unscathed without missing time and 2.) that a 245 tailback, which in any other situation or team with adequate depth, should be playing fullback. That’s pretty much a fact.

Not taking shots, just my observations and I don’t think they are far off. No other team in the entire SEC or ACC is depending on a 245 fullback/linebacker/runningback to possibly be their main lean to should their freshman go down (which he most likely will).

By the way, I told you that we would regret letting Ealey go at some point this season and I stand by that statement. Ealey and Crowell would have been a hell of a combo. For those Boo lovers out there… My understanding is that he has had this hamstring injury since last year and has lost a step. That’s why he was 4th string coming out of sping. I wouldn’t be surprised if he shut it down for 6 or 8 weeks.

If his thigh was wrapped and by the way he doesnt bend in the video my guess would be that Crowell has a either a thigh bruise (from the scrimmage) or either a quad strain. Should be fine in three or four days….If it were an injury where he was on the verge of not playing in the B-State game then they would have green shirted him. No worries on this one for now…..GATA!

The people who actually played football know that it’s just part of the game. Players are always going to get strains regardless of how they were conditioned. Blueturf, Boysee is well coached, but they are small and some of your fans talking about your speed is a little silly when you are talking to someone from the SEC. You think an SEC team hasn’t seen speed before and doesn’t have a little of its own? Game will be close for awhile, then giving up 60-70lb a man across the front will take its toll, UGA wins going away. I remember the last time you came to Ga, with a star qb, first round pick on the OL. The qb was knocked into the middle of last week, the OT was reaching to block someone. And that qb was a lot bigger, stronger and athletic than this one. Moore will be lucky to finish the game.

It is truly sad how gleeful the UGA blog writer comes off when he reports that a young man trying his hardest MIGHT possibly be injured. I understand it’s his job to report on all things Bulldog, but the lock your doors blah blah blah comments are sad and mean spirited.

Unfortunately the only reason anyone ever comes to this site is the Bulldogs. Either because we love them or because you are a wretched loser who has no friends and your life revolves around your bitter hatred of UGA. Either way the ajc tends to have the Bulldog news first so we have no choice but to check this site daily. The college football fan in me says that UGA has a very good chance of surprising Boise and taking this one rather easily, Boise’s defense I think will be suspect here, not used to the ground and pound that sec teams are known for. This all depends on richt’s game plan though. The Tech fan in me wants you to lose very badly. Either way, I think this will be a great hard fought game.

The thing is, you have to get up for 1 or 2 games a year against good competition. The other games are glorified scrimmages. Our schedule is just the opposite. We play 2 cupcakes and 10 teams who can kill us on any given day.

Your schedule is a joke. You are capable of beating us but your schedule overall is a joke. that’s the rub that you face from anyone following college football.

Some of your conference games are OOC laughers for SEC schools.

@ TROLL PATROL: why would any bcs team be afraid to play uga. your record in regular season games for the last 2 seasons is 13 -11. you are entering the “homecoming zone”; the program that schools schedule to beat up in front of the alumni. the numbers don’t lie. boise is actually doing uga a favor by playing this game. they are in a no win situation; if they win, they just beat an unranked team with a .541 winning percentage the last couple of seasons. if they lose, they lost to a team in the lower tier of a bcs conference. kinda like losing to iowa state or purdue.

This is the time of year when these types of injuries occur the most. Hammy tweaks are not caused so much by lack of conditioning, but be utilizing fast twitch muscle fibers in a hard, quick manner, that you can only get in live action.

100 yard sprints, or box jumps will help you get into shape, but if you’re a db, or lb, and a rb comes out of the backfield, and he’s your man, if he makes a hard cut to the left, or right, you have to cut, too. It’s hard to simulate moving as quickly as possible. These groin and hamstring injuries are caused by more exposure to going live, rather than lack of off season conditioning.

For the weekend warrior? Whole different story……some of y’all might pull a hammy mowin the lawn………

We’re good and IC will be fine. I am worried about Boo, though. That is one lingering groin problem. Maybe he just like getting his groin treated daily

DePort, you really consider 6 years ago to be a few years ago? Fresno St whipped our butts that year also. Since then we have beaten then 5 times in a row. I agree though. UGA is not the same team they were last year. They lost their two best receivers, two best running backs, some offensive linemen, and some key defensive players. So yes, I agree they are different then last year. It’s just hard to argue they are better.

This is concerning considering that Crowell missed significant of playing time last season due to injury, often related to his legs.

It has seldom been discussed but it was another concern of losing the two “cancers” as they would allow Crowell to grow into the position and allow university level conditioning specialist to address what is most likely a strength and conditioning issue.

And for the people saying work thru it, there are some injuries\soreness which a RB simply can not “work” thru at this level of football.

If you guys lose Crowell during the year…..the running game….if it isn’t already…..is in some serious trouble. I watched Samuel run before…..a straight ahead runner with no lateral movement skills….and not much quickness….and fumbles a lot. And I think Figgins is playing FB because you don’t have an SEC type ready FB ready to play….and that is not a good thing for your offense. Also….not proven talent at WR. Charles’ play will determine a lot of your success on offense. I know the freshmen WR was fast in 7 on 7 playing with his buds this summer….but he has not proved anyting on a football field in the SEC. Time will tell…..but Georgia has a lot of questions to be answered on the offensive side of the ball….and those answers will greatly determine what type of season you have. You look good on paper….but the SEC is not made of paper.

Tampa gator, I think Tavares King is a proven SEC receiver and Charles will see some time flanked too will , the question is what receiver does Florida that is SEC caliber and if there is on who will be QB? Big choice there Brantley or a freshman. Ogletree will be just fine at FB , Figgins was moved for depth reasons , + UGA stacked at tight end.

As I said before – it’s pretty sad when a school that used to be one of the great football schools (Tailback U) has to rely so heavily on a true freshman. That shows what a low depth UGA football has dropped with CMR. But with UGA’s so soft schedule this year – there should be no excuse for finishing at least 10-2. Then the great high and mighty fans will sing the praises of CMR. Barffff.

Tampa Gator,
I don’t deny that. Atleast you understand how it feels which is prob why you sometimes atleast bring some serious conversation here to the table in here. I for one don’t crap on the Gators recent success and I am sure alot of serious Georgia fans do not either. College football is sometimes a game of craps and unfortunately there have been a few years the past decade that Georgia has been good enough to play for atleast 2 BCS titles and perhaps good enough to win them both. I know shoulda coulda would huh, but my point is people come in here and trash UGA like they have had no success the past decade. In a conference as great as the SEC no team is going to dominate it year after year anymore. That’s what makes the SEC great today to me. People say well Georgia won SEC titles whhen the conference was down. Ok well you can say that now when Alabama or LSU wins the conference with Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee being down. Teams are always going to be down in a conference. The west use to be down and now the east is down.

kb…..

I would put T. King at Georgia and Deonte Thompson at Florida in the same boat. Both talented, but no much done on the field yet. But both could have break out years. Charles is legit, but he better suited at the TE postion. He mateches up well with LBs and strong safeties in the SEC (but maybe not so much with Matt Elam at SS for Florida), but not so well will really fast, cover CBs if he moves out to WR. The Gators tried that move with Aaron Hernandez a few years ago (remember him?)….and quickly moved him back to TE.

Also……Frankie Hammond played big at the end of the year last year……and is playing great at WR so far this fall practice. And….you will be hearing this name a lot very soon…..Quinton Dunbar…..a redshirt freshmen who would have started last year but got hurt the last week of summer practice last year and reshirted…..and a big time talent according to Weis….and he should know. Also….another fellow you might of heard of…….Andre Debose……is now is a system that fits him best and is excelling this summer at WR. The Gators also have Omaris Hines, a WR that caught some big passes against you guys in JAX last summer.

Georgia had……by far…..the best team in the nation the year they played Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl…..and the end of the year, that year, Georgia would have beat any team in the nation by at least 2 TDs, including the Gators….who they beat earlier that year. This team is not that good….not yet anyway. But they certainly have the talent to be so……depends on coaching them up this year and next year. But I would suggest you take it this year….because the Gators are going to be very, very good next year….and for several years after that. And I think they will surprise people with their performance this year……and I think they will upset a very good team this year. Just a prediction. But I still have Georgia beating SC and winning the East, but still losing to the Gators.

I think the least of Georgia’s problems are on the defenive side of the ball. Big questions at WR, OL depth, and at running back…including depth. Georgia cannot afford to lose Crowell at anytime during the season, even if he is an unproven player just out of HS….and Georgia has had a lot of HS super star RBs who flamed out quickly….and recently. I agree. There is a lot of pressure on Crowell, just like Lattimore last year against Southern Miss and Georgia behind what people were calling a very suspect offensive line.

While he and his offensive line exceeded expectations, we found out later that neither Southern Miss or Georgia were any good.

Boise State and South Carolina have very solid teams and if Crowell recovers, we will find out very early if he and his offensive line can handle the pressure.

Boise is quick and fast defensively, yet lacks size….and very well coached!!! Wonder if Bobo knows how to gameplan for that!! Veteran QB play…and plenty of speed skill players. Richt…pound the ball…play physical defensively….dawgs win! If we come out with a inconsistent offensive gameplan…dawgs lose!

I can’t even begin to imagine the despair you suffer each day as you desperately try to think of a reason to not just end it all. chdawg, that’s an easy answer…georgia tech fans have absolutely nothing to be happy about when it comes to college football. Their happiness has to be artificially inserted by getting on here and saying anything negative to get a rise out of getting under a Georgia’s fan skin. South Carolina fans are the funny ones that come in here to me. Georgia has absolutely owned them and I think they come in here and try to get attention because they have never been their before and they believe they are fixing to be a great program for years to come. It’s really funny to watch. The Florida fans just want us to submit to them and be a weak fan base and we dont so they continue to hammer the 18-3. fact like they beat us 60-0 every year. But even though yall have recently dominated us in the series I always seem to smell the fear of losing to us. Better hope Muschamp is the answer because a Ray Goff can turn the series back in our favor like he did at uga for florida in the 90S

My thoughts: Interesting matchup! One of the best in recent memory, in fact. The Ducks and Cajuns will be a great one, too. Tivo time, though. BSU–Heisman finalist, great running back, small and quick team, very well coached, and really wants to beat UGA to make a statement. Vs. a UGA team coming off of their worst year in CMR’s career here. Watching Richt trying to rebuild is interesting. A couple of points: BSU didn’t crush VT and VT did start very slow last year, losing to James Madison by a larger margin than BSU in the next game. They did get much better in the second half of the season. Some of the pundits are going on endlessly about the talent Boise brings back, but I personally think they lost a lot. We’ll see. UGA appears better on D than last year, and they should be at least the same as last year on O, imho. One thing that could go in UGA’s favor–if our D is tough, our special teams may make the difference in the game. If Moore is able to lacerate CTG’s secondary, then it is either a shootout or a blowout, depending on how well our O does. Like BDD, I expect Coach Bobo to go with his standard game plan that he is known so well for–pound the rock and use play action to keep BSU honest and score some big plays. The big unknowns are how well the O line blocks BSU’s small but very highly rated front 7, how well our backs block and run. If we have the old UGA running game back, the Dawgs will be hard to beat. I don’t agree that Murray can’t shoot it out with opposing teams. I think he excels at gunfights. I don’t know how well this year’s receivers will get open. The depth there should make for an awesome corps, but I have yet to see them do great without AJ. I liked what T King said the other day. He wasn’t happy with mediocrity, and he realizes the Dawgs are going to have to do much better to shake things up. This is the most interesting start to a season in recent memory.

Moleman,

This probably describes you pretty well, especially the blind part.

Moles are the majority of the members of the mammal family Talpidae in the order Soricomorpha. Although moles burrow, some species are semi-aquatic. Moles have cylindrical bodies covered in fur while the ears are generally not visible. They have small or covered eyes and can probably still tell night from day, although they are otherwise blind.

Ears covered in fur and darn near blind. I would say that describes you pretty well.

If Georgia doesn’t win the LEast division of the SEC this year, They have no-one to blame but themselves. They have the easiest schedule I have ever seen for a SEC Team. Put Georgia in the SEC West and no-one would even mention them. MS. State will help Georgia because they are going to put a beat down on South Carolina when they visit Starkville. MS Bully, I disagree. Georgia starts with one of, if not the toughest, schedules in the nation. Also, I think the pundits are wrong about the SEC East. I think it will be very, very strong. UF is a real sleeper. Mark my words, they will be back. They start with an easy ramp up and then comes Bama. I think they stand a very good chance of beating Bama. They will have a great D, and I expect Weiss to figure out how to use all of that talent on O. They are our biggest challenge, but SC should be very strong, too, and could win the East, too. The SEC East will be a very tough town this year.

That quote was from a Georgia fan……P.S. Florida has already won NC 2 out of 4 years. Florida will be right back in the NC hunt next year under Muschamp. He has outstanding young talent already in Gainesville and will fight with Texas and FSU for the very top recruiting class in the country this year. Have you checked to see all of the top talent that has already committed to the Gators….and the numbers of top recruits that have Florida in there top 5. You are blind if you don’t understand what is going on in Gainesville under Muschamp. He is an exceptional motivator, the players just love him already, he is a great recruiter, has assembled a terrific coaching staff, and has some of the best facilitities and fan support (emotional and financial) in the country. Yes….Florida will be fighting the NC titles next year and several years after that…….

Tampa – You might better slow down and not put the cart before the horse (or in your case gator). I am hoping Muschamp will be a fine coach ( except against Georgia), but right now, it’s way to early to tell. After Mark Richt dies and enters the Pearly Gates, God takes him on a tour. He shows Mark a little two-bedroom house with a faded Georgia banner hanging from the front porch. “This is your house, coach. Most people don’t get their own houses up here,” God says. Coach Richt looks at the house, then turns around and looks at the one sitting on top of the hill. It’s a huge two-story mansion with white marble columns and little patios under all the windows. GT flags line both sides of the sidewalk and a huge Yellow Jacket banner hangs between the marble columns. “Thanks for the house, God. But let me ask you a question. I get this little two-bedroom house with a faded banner and Paul Johnson gets a mansion with GT banners and flags flying all over the place. Why is that?” God looks at him seriously for a moment. “That’s not Johnson’s house,” God says. “That’s mine.”

For all you self-described orthopaedic doctors out there, Malcome does not have a “hammie”. He has a pulled groin muscle. While a groin injury can adversely affect one or both legs, hence the ace wrapped thigh, it is not the same thing. Regardless of the severity of the injury, it is an entirely different muscle than the hamstring.
They are both painful injuries and require 7-10 days at least for the inflammation to go down enough that the muscle can be flexed with little or no discomfort. Pulls are bad, but they are much less severe than an actual tear of the muscle. Those can take the athlete weeks, even months to recover from and surgery is sometimes needed if it’s bad enough.

Boo may have something else going on. His groin muscle shouldn’t still be bothering him for this long(since spring). I can’t believe that Courson and his crew couldn’t have gotten him well by now if it was just a severe strain. As for Isaiah,if he and Richt say it’s not serious, I believe them and everyone should relax a little. Good news or bad, Richt is going to be truthful with us, I know that. There’s still almost three full weeks to go before the duel at the Dome.

Don’t know about Malcome, but Crowell will be ready I feel sure.

LogicalUS

Hate to point this out, but the injuries to Crowell and to Samuels are devastating at this point because neither of these two players can afford to miss a singe rep at practice.

They are already behind the 8-ball with experience now each is going to be limited for at least 5 practices which mean they are just going to be that much further behind come Sept 3. If either were Jr. or Sr. then a day or two of missed reps would be nothing, but both of these kids must have every rep that they can get.

What this may lead to is that UGA will have to go vanilla in its pass protections for the Boise\SC games or perhaps keep their TE in more often to protect Murray. That would have a drasttic impact on their offensive production for those games.

just run less and throw more…..with all the WR’s and TE’s, shouldn’t be a problem! Dawgs always seem to beat themselves up in practice. Sounds like a bit of overwork. Against a lighter team like Boise, big runners shouldn’t have a great problem! I believe the Dawgs will come out with balance, control the ball, make first downs, run the clock and let Kellen Moore watch the game from the sidelines. He can’t score that way!! They are a team that likes to score quickly and have been known to do it. That can also be hard on their defense who I don’t believe can stand up to a ball control offense. GO DAWGS!!

Their defense, no, cannot stand up to the talent the 6 BCS Conferences have on their rosters. Elsewise, Boise State would not have only 8 wins all-time, ever, against the 6 BCS Conferences in 31 tries to-date and NONE against any SEC Team, ever.

Their offense cannot stand up either, for the same reason.
