Morning update: New injured players replace old ones for Bulldogs

ATHENS — Greetings from steamy-hot Woodruff Practice Fields. It’s considerably warmer out there today as the Bulldogs went through Practice 9 of 29 they’ll have during preseason camp. It was seven degrees hotter at the start (87) today than it was for the last regular practice.

Today Georgia is in “shells,” as in shoulder pads and helmets and shorts. The good news is a lot of injured guys are getting back on the field. The bad news is there are some new injured guys.

CB Brandon Boykin (hamstring), OLB Cornelius Washington (hamstring), FS Jakar Hamilton (hamstring), OLB Sterling Bailey (shoulder), TB Brandon Harton (concussion), CB Derek Owens (neck) remain in green jerseys, signifiying no contact, but were dressed out and running through drills and participating in teamwork. That’s not surprising since the Bulldogs are entering the second third of camp, which is the point they start to settle on personnel for the opening game. Boykin and Washington are starters, of course, and Hamilton used to be.

Unfortunately, some new faces joined the sidelined crew. It looks like they might have finally shut done TB Ken “Boo” Malcome and his troublesome groin. He was joined by CB Jordan Love and CB Nick Marshall. We’ll have to wait until after practice to find out the nature and extent of their injuries.

Also, outside linebacker T.J. Stripling was riding an exercise bike very slowly on the sideline and occasionally extending the right knee he had surgery on last season. He was not in green, however, indicating it probably started bothering him this morning. We’ll keep a close eye on that as Stripling is a player that figures to contribute in several areas.

The big buzz around the football complex is today is the first day freshmen will be available for interviews. They’re starting off by letting us talk to defensive rookies today, and I plan to catchup with Ray Drew, John Jenkins and Damian Swann, to name a few. Tomorrow we get the offensive guys, which of course will mean Isaiah Crowell and Malcolm Mitchell will get a lot of attention.

In other news this morning, recruiting outlets everywhere are reporting that wide receiver C.J. Curry of Flowery Branch de-committed to UGA and committed to Oklahoma State. And Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald, who’s always over Georgia’s future schedules, reports that the Bulldogs have picked up Louisiana-Monroe for the 2015 season. So get your tickets now!

Here’s some good video from my pal Guy Prokay over at DawgTime.com (check out their magazine, in stores now) of Crowell working on his pass blocking with coach Bryan McClendon. LINK HERE.

Check back all day for continuous updates.

Any news on who’s made it to the “Vampire Energy” bulletin board? I hear at least 33.33 percent of the Dawg players are actual Vampires anyway……ready to suck the blood from Boise State players.

Hound-

Got mine in the regular mail.

You must be a new STH. They prioritize every thing, dude. My seats have been changed a couple of times in the past due to the size of my donation check. Now, I always add a little extra every year to ensure that doesn’t happen any more. I really like my seats.

Priority. Get used to it.

Don’t worry. They’ll arrive on time.

You’re welcome. I’ll bet they come today. What’s got me bugging is that I won’t get my Boise State tickets until next Wed. or Thurs.! Crazy all that money on extra postage that they are wasting when they should have just put the “away game” tickets in with the season tickets.

Oh well, mine is not reason why!

Man this Malcolme story is getting old. He’s had a groin injury for about two years now. I don’t see the hype, because he didn’t look all that special to me in the spring game. Why? let me guess the groin. Didn’t get any get any playing time last year when our starters were suspended or fumbling on the goaline. Why? let me guess the groin…

Is Boo Malcom a red shirt frosh? I am really counting on him contributing to UGA ’s successes this year, with maybe 350-400+ yds and some needed TDs from around the 22-16 yd line in. He could really help us over the next few years.

I like his particular style ……………..straight ahead, low and running hard. UGA needs a solid back like that, as last year’s two backs could not even break a tackle nor hold onto the skin.

Go Dogs.

I would like you to ask everyone, “What does being a Georgia Bulldog mean to you?”

I-DOG

It did sound like from Boo’s comments this Summer that the groin injury was still bothering him. My guess is that this is something he will just have to fight through during the season. He won’t be able to carry the ball 20 times a game and practice each day.

He will just have to work through it and take some days off to rest it and hopefully he can give us the 6-8 carries we need from him on a consistant basis and do it well.

I have to say that from the pictures I saw of practice, he looks like he is in the best shape of his UGA career, so I wouldn’t count him out of being able to contribute. My guess is that he takes a few days to rest it and joins the practices again next week, but that it will very likely be on and off like that all season.

Nick Walker and that Welsey Scott can help UGA with their speed and athleticism AND ball skills. We need to incorporate these two frosh AND Brandon Smith on O to really keep the opposing D off balance with their skill set being utilized.

Carlton Thomas in a sweep will not cut it. A. Murray going long on 3rd and 14 to Orson Charles every play will not cut it, nor will Thomas up the middle on 2cnd and 8. If we continue using our old pro sets and its 3 or 4 or 5 basic plays, we are doomed. Try some new stuff ………………..or we try a new coaching staff.
It is what it is.

Go Dogs.

33 Chase Vasser OLB RSo. 6-3 227 Gainesville, GA

I hope Vasser is alright…Chip, did you notice that Vasser is limping noticeably in one of Guy Prokay’s videos from today. After you select the embedded link of Crowell pass blocking, watch the video entitled ‘8-11 Grantham Working with DLine’. That doesn’t look too good.

It’s all about playing time as a freshman…. TK is not going pro, Malcolm Mitchell is going to be the best receiver ever to step foot in Athens, and we have a bunch of young quality guys at that position. OSU is losing everyone so it’s a good fit.

As far as the fools on Chip’s blog wanting to move Samuel back to LB. Boo’s health is the main reason Samuel is on offense and will stay on offense. Boo just can’t get that Hammy right. It may be something he struggles with all season. It’s a bad injury.

GatorRhett, Vasser took a shot to the groin area, that is why he was limping and why he squatted. Wonder if you took a shot to the groin if you would get back in line and finishes drills?
