Q&A WITH JARVIS JONES
Once again, here’s the quick version of what I heard from Jarvis Jones regarding the NCAA’s ruling yesterday that he’d done nothing wrong and would be eligible to play this season. In a nutshell, Jones said he was never concerned about it because he knew his family background and knew he hadn’t done anything against NCAA rules. So he kind of downplayed the “big relief” angle. Here’s some of his comments (will update with story later):
Q: What are your feelings on getting the favorable ruling from the NCAA yesterday?
JJ: “It’s great to finally get it over with. I can go on into the season and prepare the best we can for the Boise State game. I had great support with compliance and everybody in the whole building. So it’s out of the way now and we can move on now and get ready for the first game.”
Q: Big relief to get news?
JJ: “It’s been the same for me. I’ve been preparing the same way. It never bothered me. I never stressed about it, not one day. Now that it’s over we can prepare the best we can.”
Q: Who’d you call first after you got word?
JJ: “I didn’t call anybody. Everybody was texting me. I knew I was good the whole time.”
Q: How did you know you were good?
JJ: “Because I knew I didn’t do anything. I knew the situation was good from the get-go. It was just some business some people had to go through and investigate what they had to and they handled it real well.”
Q: So you were certain how this would turn out?
JJ: “Absolutely. I knew my situation from the get-go so that’s fine. I never stressed about it. In the end it came out good and we can keep rolling.”
Q: Noticed you had three sacks today. Were you playing a little freer knowing this stuff was behind you?
JJ: “My main thing every time I step on the field is to go hard and try to make myself better and make my teammates better. That’s what we did today. Just having fun, that’s what I did today.”
Q: Your impressions of today’s scrimmage?
JJ: “We learned a lot. People got a little tired today. It was hot out there and it was our first time we’ve really been in the stadium. People had fun running around down there a little and we definitely got better on both sides of the ball. Can’t wait until the Boise State game.”
Q: We never hear anything about your neck anymore. Is that still an issue?
JJ: “It’s not an issue. A lot of stuff that goes on, for me, I deal with it and never stress about it. I’m in the best shape possible now. I’m just getting better and pushing myself to be the best player I can be.”
Q: Maybe you weren’t stressed about it but weren’t some of the people around you?
JJ: “Absolutely. Some people it did affect. Some of my teammates asked me about it. But now it’s out of everybody’s head and we can prepare the best way we can.”
Q: We heard Todd Grantham was pretty excited about it.
JJ: “Coach Grantham is a great coach. He loves me. He wants the best out of me. So when he found out about it he was excited to be able to prepare for the first game.”
Q: The reality is you haven’t played in a real game for a long time. What’s your feelings knowing your going to strap on a uniform and play for real in a few weeks?
JJ: “It’s very exciting. I’ve been off for a year and a half you could say. So to step back on the field and get a chance to play again, especially at Georgia, one of the best places in America, it’s exciting. I can’t wait to get out there and show my fans, my friends, my family, what we can do.”
Q: So the bottom line here is you had a long, preexisting relationship with persons who provided benefits for you?
JJ: “If you read the reports, it tells you that the people that were involved have been in my life since a young age . . . 11 or 12. It’s been quite a while. Those people still mentor me; I still talk to them and they’re still my family.”
Q: Looking at the stats from today’s scrimmage, it looks like the No. 1 defense was pretty dominant. That accurate?
JJ: “You can look at our No. 1 defense and you can tell we’re having fun and making plays. Everybody knows the system, so that allows us to play faster and have more fun. When you know what you’re doing you can play fast and have fun and make plays and love on each other. And that’s what we’re doing. . . . The second-team offense is still learning what they’re doing. They’re still young. But the coaches are doing a good job of teaching them what to do. So we’re learning on both sides of the ball. It’s a learning experience for them and they’re helping us with our techniques, too. We’re both learning.”
Q: So what are your personal goals for the season?
JJ: “I just want to be in the best position to help my team improve and excel the best way we can. Whatever it takes, whatever position the coaches want to put me in, that’s where I want to be at. So I just want to have fun and make plays.”
Q: What are your impressions of freshman linebacker Amarlo Herrera?
JJ: “Herrera’s going to be a great player. He’s gotten huge since he’s been here. He’s learning a whole lot. He’s just developing. Our whole freshman class is unbelievable. They’re all developing, learning the system, they’re pretty fast. I think all of them are going to be great.”
Q: What about your boy Isaiah Crowell? What have you seen from him?
JJ: “Isaiah is doing real good. He’s picking up the system. He looked real good and the offensive line looked real good. He’s just getting better. The sky’s the limit for him.”

So he says it never bothered him over and over in the interview, then this jewel of a question: “Noticed you had three sacks today. Were you playing a little freer knowing this stuff was behind you?”.

I am not making any predictions for the first to games. Boise and SC are going to be a test. Boise and SC are coming off winning season. Both of these teams have not lost many players. I want to see us compete and play solid football. Win or lose! Just don’t beat yourselves.

@drbasic,
I just moved back to Georgia from the TCU area. It has been impressive to watch their program grow, but you’re right. They don’t play in the SEC so…..hard to get a good reading. I recommend Froggy’s for the record.

Jarvis Jones handled the badgering repeat questioning from I guess Towers better than I would have. How many times did the kid need to say “I was not concerned because I knew I did nothing wrong”? It seemed like the ajc is desperate for JJ to say he was relieved so it would half assed justify the ajc’s continued witch hunt into anything negative about UGA.

Well, maybe you need to check your own sentence structure and grammar before wasting a senseless post! You need a modifer, like the word, “how,” in order for your sentence to make complete sense. Also, you need a comma before your first quotation mark in the sentence.
But, more importantly, this is a sports blog and not a middle school language arts classroom.
P.S. Sinc it’s is a “soprts” glog, I was “to” disintereteded to spllechuck ths post.

We should earn rankings on the field. I wish they would ban rankings until after the fifth game. Lot of high expectations here and I agree the tone is positive, but let’s take one game at a time. I saw a few posts were folks are “expecting wins the first two games.” It should be a fun a year, but let’s be reasonable on expectations. Still have OL issues. Anyway, GO DAWGS!

Georgia tek got more bad news for its football program today, following their 4-Year Major Infractions Repeat Offender NCAA PROBATION amid its lawsuit against it for giving Chick-fil-A a vendor a few feet from the gate but not allowing season ticket holders to carry the food in then telling lies that it did not strip search, when today Offensive Lineman Phil Smith is suspended for the 1st two games. Who are those against ?
# 121 Western Carolina
# 107 Middle Tennessee State
Cupcake-playing unranked Georgia tek.
Meantime, UGA # 22 in the Coaches’ Poll faces off against Boise State # 7 while Boise State announces they, like Georgia tek, face long-term NCAA PROBATION too. Boise State president Bob Kustra announced that he has fired 30-year tenure now AD Gene Bleymaier today.
No mention is made of Chris Petersen, coach of the football program about to be hit with NCAA Major Infractions PROBATION, like Georgia tek.
Did I mention Georgia tek is a repeat offender in football, having just come off NCAA PROBATION and now, right back on it in football again back-to-back.

Dawgs in 2011
11-3 with no significant win, especially not over Boise State 32-18 with Boise State having inferior talent to Georgia since Mark Richt has averaged # 11 in recruiting rankings by Scout.com over these last 5 years of 21 Losses – more than 4 a year for 5 consecutive years.
It is a 14-game season, and that for playing in The SEC Championship representing this Down SEC East because Florida and South Carolina have far tougher schedules, with UGA facing 0 of the Top 3 SEC West teams : Alabama LSU and Arkansas. When we do, we are clocked.
Go ahead and up what you expect our record to be 11-3 is what I say.
And, a 2 TD win over Boise State who has 0 to our 21 Top 100 players in the nation over these last 5 years of recruiting, 1 to our 51 of 5-Star and 4-Star recruits over these last 5 years of recruiting, and average number 69 recruiting rank for Boise State to Mark Richt’s average number 11 – all according to Scout.com paid millions for just this analysis of talent we have, Boise State does not.
Still not sure why Boise State wants to call this an easy game, or even have the topic of easy game in ANY POST ANYWHERE, with their 10 opponents in their 12-game regular season schedule of opponents who average a ranking of number 81 every week except for TCU and UGA.
But, it really is an easy game.
For US.

I love what I’m hearing from all of the players and coaches this year. It sounds like they are coming back to the team of the early to mid 2000’s. East repeat,
Tucker will not be teaching the football players for any classes. She will be a visiting professor at Journalism. Her liberalism will be exposed to those that are probably already die hard liberals anyway. Just an extension of the mostly liberal views of the AJC news staff, to another campus. I don’t imagine she will have too many people registering for her classes. At least the AJC could get rid of her, hopefully as the editor of her section.

I am not worried about pre-season rankings. The only ranking that counts is the final one. The folks that do these ratings can’t possibly follow every team or even most teams, to be able to determine accurately, what teams are going to be like. When they can, then we will know for sure, but that isn’t going to happen. How many times have they been right as opposed to wrong in the years they have been doing it? Sports illustrated is really only accurate with the swimsuit issue, as the ladies are usally attractive, if malnourished a little bit in their feature. Not all are underfeed though so they are pretty accurate, LOL.
